love at first sight

cafes, coffee, and confessions

There was a small quaint café nuzzled in between an equally small bookstore and a gift shop that sold little trinkets, necklaces and cheesy but cute gifts for couples. The interior was simple, pastel yellow walls decorated with paintings of various sceneries and flowers, tables scattered about with floral printed table cloth and a display with all the possible mouthwatering sweets you could buy. The perfect place to take a small break from the hectic city life, away from all the noise and vibrant colors surrounding you daily, that’s what Song Seunghyun thought. He thought it was his own little safe house to escape from the bombardment of noise and colors. A place to let loose and relax, a place to calm down, and a place to catch a glimpse of his crush.

He was a frequent customer to the small café, visiting the place five out of seven days of the week. He actually wasn’t the type that ate sweets or drink coffee, actually he despised coffee but it doesn’t really matter anymore, but somehow he managed to stumble upon the café as he was looking for his apartment building and quickly fell in love with the place at first sight.  As cliché as it sounds, that’s where he also found his first love, Lee Jaejin.

Jaejin worked at the café part-time to pay his tuitions (how Seunghyun knew, well that’s a secret) , he also went to the same university as Seunghyun, but unlike tall, lanky boy who took the road in the performing arts, the other took the path of taking one of those boring office jobs. Who would want such a time-consuming, torturously boring job? Well apparently Jaejin did.

As creepy and stalker-ish as it sounds (he did find out Jaejin’s name by coincidentally picking up his wallet which also coincidentally have his student ID, not stalker like at all), Seunghyun loved all the little habits and quirks the guy had. How the other bobbed his head to the beat of the music played in the café while he wiped the tables clean, how his lips was curved into a small smile every time he finished writing down the orders of customers, the little small hop in his steps as he delivers the various sweets and drinks to the tables and especially his voice, Jaejin’s voice was the best thing to hear in this world Seunghyun thought, other than the ringing of the dismissal bell that signaled that lecture was over. He loved hearing the other’s voice, when he had first heard the voice he nearly fell out of his seat in surprise.

He’d bet his entire collection of Angry Bird toy collection Jaejin’s singing voice was as melodious and even better than his normal voice.

--

Today was one of the five days Seunghyun was at the café, but this time he wasn’t happy, not happy at all. It wasn’t the ‘I’m really in a bad mood’ not happy, it was more like ‘this one guy is getting all touchy and feely with my crush’ not happy. He also had to consider the fact that his crush, allowed this to happen and was even laughing at it! It’s not like Seunghyun is jealous, not at all, he wasn’t jealous at all. This wasn’t jealousy that pitted beneath his stomach, not at all; he was just hungry, yeah hungry.

The blonde guy, apparently someone who has to be really close to Jaejin because there’s no way he’d let anyone touch him like that—is he groping his ? Seunghyun squints, confirming that yes, the blonde guy is groping his crush’s or he thinks so, he is seated at a weird angle.

Jaejin eventually pushes the other away, giving his friend (boyfriend? Seunghyun wouldn’t know) an irritated expression and heads towards Seunghyun’s table, pen and notepad ready to take his order.

Seunghyun’s face brightens to see his favorite waiter was serving him and didn’t look quite so irritated anymore, but who wouldn’t be irritated after nearly getting touched on the because obviously he was really irritate.

The dark-haired boy smiles at Seunghyun and begins taking his order, “sorry for the hold-back,” he shoots a glare at the blonde who raises his hands up in defense and returns smiling to Seunghyun who is completely oblivious to everything going around him. “What would you like to have today, sir?”

‘You,’ was what Seunghyun wanted to say, but instead he smiles pleasantly and answers, “blueberry cheesecake and um, you choose my drink.”

The dark-haired boy returns the smile and quickly jots down the order. “Blueberry cheesecake and—Are you sure you want me to choose your drink?” Jaejin asks with an uncertain expression, Seunghyun nods quickly. “And I guess a drink of my choice, I—um, hope I don’t disappoint you.”

“Of course I won’t!” Seunghyun exclaims loudly, he coughs and scratches the back of his neck, “I mean, everything here tastes great, so I bet the drink you’re getting me is also good.” He also wanted to add, ‘also because you’re really cute’, but that seemed a bit weird.

“Ah, really? That’s great, well anyways your order will come soon—“

“Seunghyun.”

Jaejin blinks and tilts his head to the side a bit, giving Seunghyun a bewildered look with a smile still on his face. Sometimes Seunghyun hates Jaejin’s smile, and this was one of those times because damn it was cute. “Pardon?” Jaejin asks as Seunghyun continues to gawk over Jaejin’s sort of strained smile.

The tall-boy snaps out of his admiring and fakes a cough into his hand. “Song Seunghyun, that’s my name,” Seunghyun says with a nervous smile adorned on his face.

Jaejin chuckles and Seunghyun returns to his lovesick state, he was pretty sure he looked quite pathetic at the moment, but it didn’t matter. All that mattered was his crush is right in front of him and he has a cute laugh.

Jaejin scratches his cheek and averts his eyes away from Seunghyun. “Ah well then, Seunghyun-ssi, please wait patiently,” he says politely, bowing and rushes over to the counter. The blonde begins to laugh hysterically and points at Jaejin’s red face, is it red? It really is hard to see from where he’s sitting. The brunette merely hits the blonde before yelling something incoherent to him, causing the other to laugh even more. This was just killing Seunghyun with curiosity now, but curiosity did kill the cat.

Jaejin huffs and stomps off to the kitchen to give his order to the chef, leaving the blonde by himself. Seunghyun, finding that his reasons for coming to the café in the first place (other than the food because he has to admit, the pastries here are great), begins occupying himself with daydreams of the possible scenarios he and Jaejin could have as a couple.

His order of a blueberry cheesecake and any drink Jaejin has chosen for him comes, but much to Seunghyun’s pleasure, it isn’t Jaejin who brings him his order, but the guy that was getting all touchy with his crush. The tall boy pouts when the blonde places the sweet and drink in front of him, the other just scoffs and pulls a chair and promptly sits himself in front of Seunghyun. Seunghyun raises an eyebrow at the blonde and the other returns the same look.

“Um, you are?”

“Kim Kibum, but call me Key. Everyone calls me Key, except for that douche bag over there,” the blonde—Kibum, points at Jaejin with a deadpanned expression before breaking into a smile and happily waves at the other. Jaejin merely gives Kibum a weird look, but returns to brewing the coffee.

“Uh, Key then, I’m—“

“Seunghyun, right?” Kibum interrupts, suddenly grabbing Seunghyun’s hand and shaking it with a firm grip. He sure looked like a girl, but his strength wasn’t something to joke about.

Seunghyun cradles his hand near his chest and laughs nervously. Was Kibum going to beat him up for flirting with his boyfriend? Is Jaejin his boyfriend? He hopes not, he wouldn’t have a chance to win his heart then, maybe they’re just best friends. Like Minhwan and him, they were best friends and god his hand hurts. But wait, how did he even know his name, he only told Jaejin, unless he said his name really loudly. That would’ve been embarrassing.

Seunghyun rocks in his seat a bit and smiles awkwardly at Kibum, “um, yeah, more importantly, how do you know my name?”

“Other than the fact that you practically screamed out your name to Jaejin,” oh, so he did say it a bit too loudly. “You’re actually pretty famous among the campus,” Kibum says casually.

Seunghyun spits his half-chewed cheesecake onto Kibum’s face and stares at him with wide eyes. “Excuse me?” he says in disbelief, obviously he’s got the wrong Seunghyun, he wasn’t any bit famous on the campus or he thinks he’s not famous. There was just no way, no way that he was the centre of gossip within the university, he’s just that tall, awkward guy that’s in the theater department.

Kibum cringes in disgust at the impact of the half-chewed food that landed on his face and carefully wipes it off carefully, not wanting it to spread the disgusting remnants of the cheesecake on his face. “Uh, yeah. You’re known as the prodigy actor in the theater department.”

The tall boy merely laughs, him, a prodigy actor? Now that’s something funny to say. The laughter quickly dies down and Seunghyun gives the blonde a serious expression, a rare thing to appear on the boy’s face, “no, no you must have it wrong, I’m no prodigy.”

Kibum shrugs, “according to Hongki you are.”

Hongki, the infamous gossiper of the campus, the guy with the great voice that sounds like an old middle-aged man, the guy with the apparently amazing acting skills, and the guy that’s deemed feminine because of his painted nails, that’s Lee Hongki in a nutshell. Hongki was known for his eccentric, arrogant behavior and for being a harsh critic. One of those art critics who just had to point out every single little flaw within your paintings, and then bicker over how the title is totally irrelevant to the actual artwork.. He was certain that anything that came out of that guy’s mouth was bad, but for him to be praising Seunghyun, he must actually be good.

“Hongki? As in Lee Hongki?” he asks, still in disbelief.

“Yeah, there’s only one Hongki, but that’s not why I’m here, so let’s cut to the chase—“

Seunghyun cuts Kibum off before he could finish his sentence with wide eyes, “you aren’t here to beat me up for flirting with your boyfriend, are you?”

The blonde looks at Seunghyun with narrowed eyes, and points at himself then Jaejin. The tall boy nods his head slowly and Kibum plants his face on the table and groans into it. He looks up at Seunghyun, who now has a very confused expression and sighs.

“We get this all the time, but we’re not dating. We’re just really close friends,” Kibum explains.

Seunghyun mouths an ‘o’ and sips his drink quietly. His looks at his drink strangely, but shrugs and continues to sop on it quietly as he tried to compute what the blonde had said into his brain. “Ooohhhh,” he says loudly, “best friends like me and Minhwan best friends. Got it.”

“Jaejin made that by the way,” Kibum points out before resting his chin on his hands. “Yes, best friends. Don’t know how you came up with that conclusion.”

“That’s good, that means I have a—“ Seunghyun pauses mid-sentence, mouth still open, realizing what the other had just said, “did you say Jaejin made this?”

Kibum smiles pleasantly, “yeah. Now this brings me to the topic, you like Jaejin—“

Seunghyun spits out his drink that he’d been drinking all over Kibum and he begins frantically apologizing. “Sorry, didn’t mean for that to happen. God I’m such a klutz, how can I make this up for you and how did you know I like Jaejin,” the tall boy manages to splutter out. “I wasn’t that obvious, was I?” Seunghyun asks in a hushed tone.

Kibum stares at Seunghyun with a deadpanned expression, and grabs another napkin to wipe his face. “Yes it was obvious and—“Kibum’s face scrunches up in disgust, “will you stop spitting food and drinks on my face, it’s gross.”

Seunghyun looks down at his lap and mumbles an apology. Kibum crumples the napkin into a ball, and continues to talk, “before you decided to spit your coffee all over my face—“

Seunghyun looks up at Kibum with wide eyes, “that was coffee?”

“Yes now will you—“

“That didn’t even taste like coffee! Oh wow, that was really good.”

The blonde shoots a glare at the tall boy making him shrink back, “stop cutting me off.”

“Sorry,” Seunghyun squeaks out.

“Anyways, Jaejin likes you.”

Seunghyun once again spits out the coffee he was drinking all over Kibum, who bothers to do nothing and just stands up from his seat. “I’m done, Jaejin you deal with your love problems yourself,” he says loudly as he throws up his arms into the air, “I’m done, I’m no longer interfering with your love life or helping you with your inability to confess to your crush.”

Jaejin looks up from the counter and drops the icing he was using while decorating his cake and looks at Kibum with wide eyes, “you—what?”

“You deal with this idiot’s thick head! He keeps on spitting gross stuff all over me!”

Seunghyun just looks at the two and mutters a, “Jaejin likes me,” before covering his face and slowly slinking down in his seat.

“But—my cake,” Jaejin says with a desperate expression pointing at his cake he was currently decorating.

The blonde huffs, “cake later, confess now.”

The brunette his lips out of nervousness and drops the cake decorating material he was holding. He walks towards Seunghyun, who was now on the ground still muttering, “he likes me,” and kicks him. Seunghyun peeps at Jaejin between his fingers, pulls himself up into a sitting position and gives the other an awkward smile, “uh—I—um.”

The brunette sighs and glares at his friend who is on the floor laughing. “I like you, and apparently you like me. Let’s go out or…” Jaejin scratches the back of his neck, “something.”

Seunghyun blinks and breaks into a big smile, “yeah! Going out,” the tall boy stands up and puffs out his cheeks, “does that officially mean we’re a couple?”

Jaejin hits Seunghyun’s head and crosses his arms, “you’ve gotta be kidding me.”

“So we are? Then…” the tall boy gives Jaejin a mischievous look, “can I kiss you?”

“What?”

“Kiss you.”

“I—What?”

Seunghyun leans in and gives a quick peck on Jaejin’s lips. He smiles at himself satisfied at the brunette’s blushing face and laughs at it.

“You little—I just—Kibum don’t say anything, I—“

And Seunghyun thought he’d be the one who would react like this.
