At first

Afterschool

The empty can clanged as she kicked it away from her. She watched it roll to the side of the alley she’s currently trying to get to the end of. But because she’s Wheein she chased after it, picked it up, and dropped it in the proper bin for recycling. The freshman straightened and continued on her merry way. It’s always been like this since school started. The last bell would ring, the tired mass of high schoolers would collectively heave up and clamor to get out of school to go home or if they’re like her: go to an abandoned warehouse by the sea to listen to some 90s music with a pretty but silent, a pretty silent one if you will, older girl from a different school.

It started normally enough, she was walking on her way home on the first day of school. The sun was setting, the seagulls were seagulling, and then there she was. Standing back against the abandoned warehouse, long bleached blonde hair picked ever so slightly by the wind, she looked so… blank. Like she wasn’t thinking about anything at all. Wheein wondered how it could feel to just be in the moment. She might have been there, staring for quite a while since the other girl turned her head and noticed her. Then something strange happened, the girl with the long bleached blonde hair tilted her head at Wheein as if asking her to join her in her lonesome. Wheein’s traitorous feet shuffled forward and in no time they were there standing shoulder to shoulder. Nobody spoke. Nobody moved until the long haired girl; who was, judging from her school uniform coming from another school, offered Wheein her right earphone. She’s listening to Turbo’s “December”. Wheein couldn’t help but sing along when Jung Kook oppa’s part came. When she looked at her companion, the long haired beauty was looking at her with approval. Wheein raked her fingers through her own short bleached blonde hair. She’s intensely blushing and the blush remained when the song changed to that of Epik High. They might have been there for at least an hour because the sun was completely gone when Wheein remembered she needed to get kimchi from an Auntie or her mother would have her hide. She gently shoved the earphone back to the other girl. She’s turning a corner when-

“I’ll see you tomorrow then?” It was the other girl.

“Yes. See you.”
