Floating

Counting the Days

Just like any other normal people in the world, Hwang Eunbi started her day with a groan escaping her lips.

It's not even 6 in the morning when she woke up, nursing her pounding head and busying her mind with everything but the image of certain someone she wanted to erase from her memory so badly (but in some way or another, that also means erasing her own entire existence too)

She usually wasn't like this, she was not a big fan of drinking after all. But the temptation of freedom was too hard to resist on that particular night, and sinb just wanted to be free. Honestly speaking, she had gotten better.. but after hearing the news..

It shouldn't have been like this, sinb thought. She had tried to build a future, a happy one, with that person by her side. She had thought about becoming a very successful, very booked choreographer, and going on a world tour with the performers she's working with. Going on vacation once in awhile and went home to her friends with gifts from various corners of the world, maybe bought a house of her dream where she could hear the wave of the ocean first thing in the morning, where whenever she looked at her left side she could see the sun highlighted her favorite scenery in the world lying beside her on their shared bed. She thought she'd been in the right path all those time, she thought.

She desperately clinged to the what-ifs, it's already too late when she realized that it's damaging.

There was a point in her life where everything was perfect.

It's been years, and she was embarrassed to admit that she hadn't gotten over it.

Is it possible to make an invisible scar dissapeared?

She had tried, she failed.

So, in this lovely morning where the warmth of the morning sun was just perfect to start a day, sinb forced herself to get off of bed.

Not a smooth way to start a day, sinb thought. How ironic the way she ran out of coffee when she literally owned a coffee shop. Settling with a too sweet scrambled egg and a cup of cold milk, sinb had her breakfast uneventfully.

She had sighed for god knows how much until her co-owner of the coffee shop finally had enough and kicked her ,

"Ouch, what was that for?" sinb hissed, the taller girl just glared at her

"I told you NOT to drink that much last night." she hissed back,

"Maybe it's a news for you, unnie, but do you know that i lack of self control?" the older girl opened and shut it immediately, failed to form a decent comeback, so she decided to handle her in the way she knew would be effective,

"I'm gonna choke you again." she declared and sinb's face turned pale,

"No no no no not that again." she put her mop and was ready to sprint when the chimes rang.

"Oh, am i interrupting something?" a soft voice said and sinb thought she saw an angel,

"Yewon! My life saver!" sinb jumped and hugged the confused girl, the latter managed to mutter a soft "Hi.."

"Yuju unnie is trying to kill me!" she said dramatically, the said girl just rolled her eyes

"And why does she want to do that?" the younger girl narrowed her eyes at both of women who immediately shrunk under her gaze despite looking 10 times more intimidating than her,

"She drank more after you left last night." yuju started and yewon immediately shifted her eyes to glare at sinb, the two women stared at each other for a few seconds before yewon let out a soft sigh,

"You promised me not to." she said, sending a jab to sinb's gut. The disappointment was making her uneasy, she smiled nervously

"I.. um, lost control? I mean, i didn't mean to, i swear I've tried to stop but," she pondered a bit, "but i didn't try hard enough." she finished with a humorless chuckle. She looked at everywhere but their eyes, the eyes that were mirroring ther disappointment in her.

"One news of her coming back, and it shakes your ground this badly." yewon commented, sinb just smiled.

"What can i say?" sinb lowly said, grabbing her mop and started to rub the same place over and over, "she is my original ground, after all. I'm floating, yewon." she sighed, noticing she didn't get anything done ever since yewon came, "I'm floating without her. Aimlessly."

The event from the morning kept repeating in sinb's head.

She couldn't believe she just admitted that out loud, to two women who also friends with the source of her pain. What did she think?

"It's almost closing time, it's your turn to count the money." yuju said, pulling sinb out of her thought.

"Speaking of money.." she added, "Penny for your thought?" she said, rather playfully, but both of women knew she was being serious.

"Hmmmm, i don't know. Will you stop looking at me like that if i tell you?" sinb finally made an eye contact,

"Like what?" yuju asked,

"Like, like i am a little too weak. Like, i can't get out of my own maze. Like.. should i continue this?" she smiled a little, trying to joke around.

"Ah.. I'm sorry, I, I know you hate it when i do that." yuju touched her nape out of habit, "Have i been doing that this whole day?"

"Yea, understandable though.. I mean, considering my outburst this morning." sinb moved toward the cashier machine,

"I won't call that outburst, eunbi. It was justified, you have the right to feel bad about it. I just, i just hope you're not consuming those thoughts all by yourself." yuju followed her closely, deciding to stand a feet away and rubbed the table there.

"Mmmm.." sinb hummed,

"Eunbi," yuju called her with the tone sinb knew would do something to her heart, "We're here you know." sinb hummed again

"If you don't wanna go, we won't force you. Do whatever you're comfortable with." she said, "But, my advice? Face it and get the closure." she added carefully

Sinb hand stopped moving and she couldn't help but curse, "Dammit, i forgot the count."

Yuju smiled a little, "That's that." she sighed.

"Talking about counting.." yuju trailed, "It's been three years." she said,

"I know. Wanna know how much days it's been?" sinb challenged her, half joking. Yuju laughed, she shook her head

"You really like to joke about your hardship."

"Heh, what more can i do about it? Facing it?" she chuckled again,

"I'm just saying.. closure is important." yuju stood up next to sinb, putting her arm around her comfortingly. sinb let out a shaking exhale, she put her head on the crook of her neck.

"I'll.. I'll think about it, yuju unnie."

And for the first time in awhile, sinb let herself be seen when she's being vulnerable. That actually felt nice, sinb thought. Beside, she could always blame her lenses for the tears that escaping her eyes.

Yuju wouldn't made fun of her anyway

At least not in the next three months.

"Yerin! Finally, what took you so long!" not even five seconds after they met, yerin had already being scolded. Some things are indeed never changed.

"Sorry, unnie, i had something to do before this and unfortunately it took longer than i expected." she said apologetically, she scanned the table and noticed someone was missing. In fact, the missing person was the first one she was looking for. Her shoulders sagged a little.

"It's been, what? almost a year since i saw you guys?" she tried to make a conversation to mask her disappointment, but she knew, all of her best friends must've seen that.

"Not with me though, we met in paris on that one event." yewon said, making yerin let out a soft "ah.."

"You're so busy you can't keep a track on us anymore?" eunha joked, yerin was fast to shook her head, "What are you talking about! Of course not."

"Okay okay, geez i was just joking, unnie." yerin pushed eunha with a closed fist weakly, "You meanie."

"I see, being a worldwide pianist hasn't changed you even a little bit." yuju commented, "You meanie." she said what yerin just said with a little bit exaggeration.

"Wha- i didn't say it like that!" yerin faked her annoyance, making the whole table laughed. She missed one particular oddly adorable laugh though, she couldn't shake the feeling away.

She finally let out a long sigh, saying it in her head and just.. ask.

"She's not coming, isn't she?" she studied her best friends' face one by one, it made her disappointment grew bigger and bigger everytime her eyes landed on the next person.

"Figure.." she said, looking down. she shoved down her emotions, grabbed a glass of water and took a sip from it.

"Why is the atmosphere so weird here?" yerin almost choke on her glass, she snapped her head so fast she was sure she would dislocate it.

Yerin should've taken even more time to prepare herself since the scene being displayed in front of her quite literally knocked the air out from her lungs.

How much things can change in just three years?

A lot, apparently.

It was weird, since a lot has changed but in the same time.. it's still the same.

It was still there, it never dies.

The buried emotions suddenly climbed its way to the surface, yerin didn't know how to stop that.

A sentence formed a hurricane inside her, it was a passing comment, but it's being said with the voice of her dream.

"Eunbi.." the name was foreign to her lips, yet painfully familiar. She had this strong urge to repeat her name over and over as if she didn't say that almost every night in her dream.

Now, she's standing there and she could hear her.

But why is it so hard to just.. reach for her?

"Now it got weirder, snap out of it sowon unnie. You look like you just saw a ghost." she chuckled to herself and sat beside yuju, pointedly ignoring the fact that she knew exactly why her best friends were acting like that

"You came!" yuju hugged her,

"That's what she said." sinb joked and she received a several amount of eye rolls.

"That was so lame." sowon said and sinb just shrugged her shoulder, she finally made a proper eye contact with yerin, the latter had to hold herself back from flinching.

"Heh, long time no see, yerin unnie?" she said as casually as possible, yerin wondered if it was actually casual or.. or sinb was just so good at masking her emotions.

Because what yerin was currently feeling weren't casual at all. It was making her head spin over the way it scrambled her inside.

How did sinb being that.. composed, when yerin felt like she might as well combust here and there?

And she noticed how sinb called her 'unnie' again.

They had decided to drop the honorific when they dated.

Yerin finally smiled toward the younger girl, "Yes.." she said shortly, not trusting her voice to sound firm at all. Saving herself from embarrassment.

"It's been a what? Three years?" yerin saw sinb's eyebrows met, frowning, as if she couldn't exactly recall it. Yerin's smile flattered a little bit,

That's unfair,

Really unfair.

Considering yerin was being reminded of that particular night every ing day that she knew exactly how many days had passed.

And there she was, frowning over just the amount of year.

"Yeah, it's been three years." yerin said with finality.

The meeting went better than what both sinb and yerin had imagined, thanks to their lovely best friends. A lot of memories and jokes were being cracked there, the girls' stomach were starting to hurt over the amount of laugh they let out. The foods were also great, over all it was nice.

But still, people are greedy

And yerin was just.. a person.

She had come to their little meeting with an ulterior motive, sure, she loves her best friends and missed them so bad but.. she had to admit that someone hold a place where there was no one else inside her heart. The highest place? If she could name it.

Then again, what right did she have? Asking for her time, asking for one more chance when she's the one who left on the first place?

Yerin was ready to beg, she would kneel if needed. But wasn't that too selfish?

Is being wanted to be loved, selfish?

Maybe, when you were the one who stopped trying in the first place.

So when she saw sinb's figure retreating from where she's standing, all she could do was holding back. Painfully staring at the love of her life, once again, fading away.

For once, she knew how it felt like to be the one being left. It's not fun.

She stood there, watching her shoes as if they would help her ease the pain. She couldn't been caught breaking down in public, she knows, but her feet were refusing to move.

"Hah.." she sniffled, "Just a little bit then.." so she decided to just, stand there until the cold was no longer bearable. Maybe while replaying the moments of sinb actually being within her reach that happened just now?

Thinking about her smile sent a familiar warmth to her heart.

Is that magic?

"Now, why are you still here?"

Also her voice sent an army of butterflies to yerin's belly, she chuckled because wow was she whipped, wait hold on..

"Ohmygod..!" yerin exclaimed, making sinb raised one of her eyebrows,

"Are you okay?" she checked, yerin was melting. Blame the cold, what else could a freezing thing did when it meets a warmth?

"Yes..? yes, yes i am. Just, uh," she wandered her eyes around to look for something, something she could use as an scapegoat.

"Just, uh, tired." she said in the end, her heart started to hammer in her chest when she noticed what expression sinb was wearing, it was a display of.. care?

"Can you go home? Will someone fetch you here?" she made sure, "It's late."

"I drove here," she said, "I'll be okay, i just need a moment."

"A moment in this freezing cold weather? It won't be great for your health."

"I, i drank. Remember? I forgot i have to drive." yerin chuckled, embarrassed of herself. Now at least she had a reason for her reddening cheeks.

"Ah.. well," sinb seemed like she was contemplating, and yerin couldn't help but raising her hope a little bit.

"I'll help you call a driver?" sinb said instead, and yerin's eyes lost its blinding light for a second. Sinb immediately took her phone, but her fingers halted.

"On second thought.." she cleared , "Why don't I just drive you home instead?"

The drive was quiet, save for the faint sound coming from the radio. Yerin would steal some glances at sinb once in awhile, she thought she was being stealthy.

"So, turn right?" sinb asked and yerin nodded her head, then immediately palmed herself when she remembered sinb couldn't see her; she had to use her voice.

"Yes, yes turn right." sinb nodded her head, using one hand to drive the car, yerin found sinb driving too attractive for her own good. She looked away, embarrassed.

"Have you been.. busy?" sinb finally broke the silence, yerin thanked all the superior beings for the blessing.

"Not really, ever since i said i wanna visit south korea they started to give me more time to rest." she said, "I'm glad though, i can save my stamina because i have a lot of things i wanna visit." she added, finding it easy to talk to the other girl. "Less practice too."

"That's good to know.." sinb commented, yerin could hear the tapping noises sinb made toward the steering wheel got faster, they were already near, they almost arrive at yerin's place.

"What about.. you?" yerin asked hesitantly, as if she didn't ask yewon or yuju every chance she got about sinb's well being, sometimes she thought she was being a creep. But, what else could she do? she couldn't help it.

"Doing well, the coffee shops are doing better than i expected. We have some branches here and there, yuju unnie is an amazing partner. i just worked at the shop to kill time." she explained, yerin smiled hearing that. She always knows that the younger girl was a hardworking person.

"You should visit sometimes." she added and yerin couldn't help but stare at her, processing the offer, not noticing that they had already arrived.

"Yerin unnie?" sinb called her, finally, after studying her face. She was panicking right then because, now what?

Why did she ask that stupid question as if yerin would have time to visit her little coffe shop, yerin is a worldwide pianist for f
