The Snow Queen

THE LEGEND OF THE EDELWEISS: The Snow Queen

Edelweiss, also known as Snow Flower, gets its name from the German word "Edelweiß", which is a compound of edel "noble" and weiß "white". It’s a scarce, short-lived flower located in remote mountain areas.

The most courageous and brave adventurers would often climb the hills, cross the cold rivers and walk the most dangerous paths to get an Edelweiss to their special girls, being the flower recognized as a symbol of daring, courage and noble purity.

The lucky ones who returned from their travels would be recognized as intrepid and fearless men and got rewarded with the hand of their beloved.

The truth is, men who came back were few: they either returned empty-handed or wounded, and that’s why the stories about the many who died kept only the bravest ones challenging the mountains.

Once upon a time, a beautiful woman lived on the highest, most solitary peaks of the Alps. She was the Snow Queen: skin as white as the purest snowflake and gentle as silk, long and soft blonde hair, eyes as deep as the ocean. Many men climbed the dangerous mountains to admire her and fell head over heels for the stunning woman, bewitched by her beauty.

They all would have given their lives to be able to marry her, and indeed that’s what they give. Fate was cruel and deserted the woman to eternal solitude, not allowing any mortal to marry her. Despite all the brave souls who tried to persuade her never returning, many and many continued trying, hoping for a different ending.

The Snow Queen lived secluded in her majestic and grand ice palace, and the suitors were allowed to step inside to try their luck. Far into the palace stood the Queen’s throne: a shiny large room full of ice decorations with a crystal roof and walls taller than the city walls of any kingdom.

In the middle of the room sat the Snow Queen. Her throne was located a level higher than the rest of the room, giving her the chance to look down to whoever dared to enter her throne hall.

Her expression remained stoic and uninterested every time. The suitors, like following a script, all kneeled down in front of her and asked for her hand.

Fate was against any marriage, so its solution was assigning goblins to the Snow Queen so whenever any of the suitors declared the love for her and asked for her hand in marriage, thousands of goblins would appear to grasp the suitor and throw him to the bottomless abyss.

Not a single emotion was seen in her, seemingly uninterested even face to face with death. Her ice heart long lost its warm and got her the Snow Queen title, the legend of the crystal palace spreading like wildfire across the country.
