“You stupid girls! Get back here! You need to clean this up NOW!” ‘umma’ shouted at us again.

Sometimes, Hye Mi and I don’t believe that she could run a kind orphanage, if she could, she wouldn’t be treating us like slaves. Always making us clean the house, honestly, there’s NEVER been a time when she hasn’t treated us like this.

Both of us were getting tired of this, every day, every night. Sleeping on the hard floor, getting kicked by her drunk . She was never sober and it left scars.

One time, for protecting the younger children, she burned my back with those filthy cigarettes she smokes. Physical scars to remind us of here. This horrible place.

One time, when I wasn’t here to help her because ‘umma’ send me out for more soju, Hye Mi didn’t ‘clean’ something good enough, even though it was spotless. ‘Umma’ broke a soju bottle and cut Hye Mi with it. One long cut along her back from when she was trying to run away. Then, after she fell from the pain, another cut on her right calf. ‘Umma’ would have done more to her arm and face if I didn’t come back for the mart in time.

I know, I have to protect Hye Mi from now on, just look at us now, we have nothing. No love, no help, and most of all no friends. She never attacked any of the younger kids, because they always get adopted within weeks of coming here. It was the two of us, the 17-year-old twins, too old to be molded to rules.

“You USELESS GIRLS! Can’t you do anything right?” ‘Umma’ slurred.

Great, she was in another one of her drunken states.

“Jihyun unni, come on... Let’s just clean the stupid kitchen and she’ll go to sleep.” Hye Mi pulled on my ratty shirt.

“Whatever.. We’ll get out of this.. We will be adopted soon.” I assured her as we went to wash the dishes and clean the floors.
