Her

Singles Strangers that Tuned in to the Radio (#socksout)

All right, I’m done with this assignment. Is said as I put the last full stop on the last sentence of my essay. I proceeded to start proof reading it just as my roommate and friend Emma knocked on my door. “Hey, Lily?” She asked trying to get my attention “Yeah” I answered her not looking away from m my laptop screen as I continued to proofread my essay one last time before I submit it. “Are you busy tomorrow?” She asked as she plopped on my bed. “Nope. After this assignment I’m free for about two weeks. Why?” I asked her still looking at my laptop trying to fix up some mistakes I’ve made. “Can you please please take over my shift tomorrow?” She asked. I stopped what I was doing and spun my chair around to face her. “My boyfriend and I planned to hang out tomorrow since it’s Valentine’s Day but our manager just told me to either come in or find someone to cover for my shift at the cafe tomorrow morning” she explained. I let out a sigh. “It’s not even a full shift. It’s only from morning to noon. Pretty please Lily. Me and my boyfriend haven’t seen each other in two weeks” She pleaded and has that look in her eyes. I rubbed my eyes a bit and let out a small 'fine' which kind of sounded more like a groan. “Really?” She asked in disbelief. “Yeah. I’ll cover for you. I need the cash anyway” I told her and she started jumping up and down. “Oh my god. Thank you so much. I really owe you” she said. “Yeah yeah. Now go way I need to submit this” I told her. “Thank you Lily. I’ll make it up to you” she told me as she left my room. “Even though it’s Valentine’s Day tomorrow it won’t be that bad since it’s not a full day shift” I thought to myself as and I submitted my assignment.

The next day

I take back what I said last night back. This morning’s shift at the cafe is horrible. Aside from the usual grumpy half a sleep zombies here grabbing their morning coffee so they can somewhat function at work, there are couples everywhere either showing too much PDA or just want to make the baristas days extra horrible. Seriously it got to the point that I wanted to throw cup in their faces and tell them to makes it yourself lucky for them I had to hold myself back. One of the girls had the guts to say to me “Don’t you dare try to steal my oppa.” I rolled my eyes and thought to myself as I was taking her order “B*tch. Your man is hideous” but what I ended up saying to her was “Deadpool’s cancer covered face looks better then your man” and she looked all offended but was too shocked to say anything. The manager called out to me say my shift is over before that girl could do anything since my foot was already out of the door. I walk out to my car, put my head on the steering wheel and let out a long sigh and stayed like that for a good ten minutes just so I can recharge my energy from deal with all the people in that cafe. I really need a new job. I finally started up the car and drove out of the parking lot. Since I didn’t feel like going home yet I just drove with no destination in mind while listening to the radio. After a while I changed the station to one where the radio djs we’re trying to hook people up by having singles hang their socks out their car windows. So that’s why I’ve been seeing cars with a sock hanging out the window for the last 10 or so minutes. I found that listening to the people call up trying to find love just by doing this was a really weird but yet adorable in a way. Suddenly the conversation I had with my oldest sister last week popped in my head. I remember her telling me how I don’t really pay any attention to my love life and how maybe it’s time that I put some effort in that. You know what maybe it is time that I stepped up my game when it comes to dating and start meeting more people. A good way to start to do something weird and quirky. So I ended up pulling over and took off one of my blue socks with green polka dots and hung it out my car window. After that I started driving again; I’m not really expecting much but let’s just give this a try.

After about half an hour I was just listening to other people call up the radio station in search of love. To be honest I’ve kinda start loosing hope in my sock flapping out there in the wind. “We will continue with the match making for Socks Out If Your Single right after this” the radio djs said and started playing Latch by Disclosure. I started jamming out to this song since it one of my favourite songs of all time “Now I got you in my space, I won’t let go of you, Got you shackled in my embrace, I’m latching on to you” I sang like an idiot in my car. “And we are back. Now, a lot of people have called. I mean a lot, the phone lines are going nuts. I’ve never seen the producers work so hard. Let’s get another one on. We’ve Xu Kun” the dj said as I was listening. Xu Kun as in Cai Xu Kun the most popular guy at uni right now..... nah it can be him. “Hi everyone. Yeah. I just saw a girl that had a blue sock with green polka hanging out of her window” the guy answered. Oh my god it is him. Why the heck is he calling up? There could be many other girls with the same blue sock with green polka hanging out their car window. Most likely isn’t me. “Okay. So the has a blue sock with green polka hanging out. Can you describe the car for us?” the radio djs asked trying to get more information. “She’s driving a small green Mazda 2 around (*insert suburb/city here*). I just saw her turn the corner and now I have no idea where she went.” he described. “Alright Xu Kun, we are going to help you find her. Ladies if you are driving a green Mazda 2 and have a blue sock with green polka hanging out your window. In (*insert suburb/city here*) give us a call on (********** - made up number). We will be back after this song and hopefully she gives us a ring” the radio dj says as they play All the Stars by Kendrick Lamar and I was left speechless. I pulled over and picked up my phone and trying calm my shaking hand as I type in the number. I waited nervously as the phone rang in my ear “Hi this is 107.3 fm (A/N: made up station)” one of the producer spoke. “Hi I’m the girl driving the green Mazda 2” I told her. “With the blue sock with green polka hanging out of the window.” She asked. “Yep” I answered. “Oh my god. What’s your name?” “Lily” I then told her. “Hang on a sec” she then told me. In the background I could hear “She’s on the other line” I then heard someone else taking before the producer yelled a loud “Yes”. After the song ended one of the radio djs spoke to me “So Lily you are the person with the blue sock with green polka hanging out of the window of a Mazda 2?” They asked me which I confirmed yes to all those things. “And where are you right now?” They asked me. “I’ve parked my car on (*insert street name here*) to make this call. I’ve parked close to a post box” I told them. “Alright Lily stay right there. Can we get Xu Kun?” He asked one of the producer. The other radio dj then said “He just told our producer that he will be there in 5 minutes and hung up.” “Lily just hang tight and we hope you two meet up soon. Don’t forget to call us up and give us an update” the radio dj told her. “Sure thing. Ok, bye everyone” I hung up after that. Not long another car pulls up and parks in front of me. I don’t know if I look it on the outside but I’m freaking out right now. I open my car door and step outside just as the car in front of me opened their door and there Cai bloody Xu Kun steps out of the car. The most popular guy in uni literally called up a radio station to look for someone to spend time with on Valentine’s Day and it ended up being me out of all people. Like is this real life right now. Oh god he’s walking closer to me. What the heck do I do? Someone help I’m freaking out. “Hi Lily” he said to me with as shy smile as he started to scratch the back of his neck. “Hello” saw all I could say to him. “So… you took your sock off your window” he stated trying to make conversation. “Yeah. I’m actually wearing it now” I answered as I looked down at my shoes. Then the atmosphere got silent and a bit awkward. “It’s nice seeing you,” he suddenly broke the silence which made me look up at his face. “You know I’ve seen you around campus but never had a chance to actually talk to you. But I’m glad that I got this chance to finally met you face to face” He told me as the soft smile remained his face. “Yeah. But you have to admit that this is one of the weirdest ways to meet someone” I told him as I broke eye contact turning my attention to the leaves falling from the tree near the side walk just in front of where Xu Kun parked his car. “Do you wanna go and have dinner…with me?” he asked me with a bit of a stutter. I let out a small shaky sigh to calm down before answering “Sure.”
