What is Role-Play about?
Role-playing is different to everyone. Heck, even the spelling is different from person to person. Now, you can look up a definition from multiple sources and it basically come down to this:
Pretending to be someone else; using a different face, and creating an alternate person.
Why do people's feelings get hurt outside of Role-Play?
- However, even if the individual uses a different face/name/etc they may still Role-Play(RP) as themselves. They may feel upset in Real Life (RL) when their character is going through certain issues in the RP world, and vice versa.
- It doesn't matter if the person's RP character is completely different from the RL person. They may get offended when someone insults their character because they put so much time and effort into creating the character.
- They are sensitive. There isn't anything wrong with this, but this may be an issue.
- They get so involved into the RP world that they forget it is just an RP world.
What is a Role Play? [NEW!]
A role play is a group of people who pretend to be characters under a certain theme. Think of each role play as a family or a community. Each family/community has a certain theme. Some take ideas from movies/books/games/etc, and let you create a original character from that movie/book/games/etc. However, there are some role plays that have a specific list of characters that are available to role play. Some of the popular ones are Glee, Supernatural, Harry Potter, etc. Then there are those that allow you to pretend to be idols. That means you get to take on the identity/personality/etc of that idol. Let's go over them in more detail, since these are all different types of role plays.
Ideas taken/inspired from movies/books/games/etc:
- When a role play is based on a book/movie/game/etc (I will refer to them as "Inspirations"), they will allow you to create a character that ties into the specified inspiration.
- For example, let's say that there is a master/slave type of role play(I use this since I see a lot of these). This means that the role play is going to be centered around the idea of either being a master or a slave. You play your desired part in this community/family. Ultimately you get to have the say how your character is. You get to create a back story/personality/nicknames/etc.
- Still a little confused? Another example of an role play taken from inspirations is role plays that are like kpopxmen (click here to be directed to the role play). This is a role play inspired by the series/movies/comics X-men. You get to pretend to a mutant or human living on an island. This role play only accepts Kpop Idols, but you can choose anyone(if they are not already taken) and pretend to have your favorite Xmen ability (if the power isn't taken).
- These types of role plays allow you to pretend that you are in an alternate reality. They are also called Alternate Universe Role Plays because your character is not from this world.
Role plays with a specific list of characters:
-
These are role plays that ONLY accept certain characters. No, this isn't a role play that only allows "Korean Idols" or "Japanese Idols." This is a role play that only allows you to choose from:
- Movie Cast
- TV Show cast
- Games
- Manga Series
- Cartoon Characters
- ETC
- In these role plays you will take on the identity of that character. A popular role play example are Glee role plays. You get to be a member from Glee and take on that personality. For example, if I wanted to be Puck I'd have to be able to PULL OFF his personality. I can't be Puck's character, and give him a totally different persona.
- It is wise that you understand your character. For example, I don't recommend joining a Supernatural role play as Dean Winchester if you are not up to date on his character.
- These role plays are usually for hardcore fans.
Pretending to be idols:
- These role plays allow you to be an idol(celebrity). You assume his/her personality. This is similar to the role plays that are based off of a movie/game/etc characters, but are different because it takes place in the real world and are real life people. That means that there isn't any zombies, aliens, master/slave relationships, etc. Only things that would happen in the real world.
How do People Role Play? [NEW!]
Everyone role plays differently. One of the things that I like to do is create a character either on paper, in my head, etc. You've heard the term WWJD (What Would Jesus Do). You put yourself in his shoes, and try to make a choice that you think he would make. When role playing you should think similar to this (A/N: No! I don't mean to compare Jesus to role play characters. It is just something that most know about even if you do not believe in him. I don't mean to offend anyone). When acting out your character inside a role play you should ask yourself "What would my character do? How would they act if someone said this to them?" I know a lot of people role play Willy nilly, and have no consistency to their character. One moment they are a sweet innocent person, and the next they are these crazy "I'll cut you if you look at me the wrong way" type of characters. If you have a character, please be consistent and make sure you make choices, interact with people, etc like that character would. Here is an example of what I like to do.
Name: Mamoru Choi
Age: 20
Personality: Quiet(bold= examples of his quiet nature), and doesn't trust people( underlined = why he doesn't trust people).
Bio: He was abandoned when he was a child, and left on the door step of an orphanage. The people in charge of the orphanage didn't treat him bad, but he wasn't given a lot of attention. He was always quiet, and didn't make friends easily. He was teased because he was an easy target. He knew that he was abandoned, and believed that everyone would eventually leave him. Mamoru made the mistake of allowing one person to get close to him when he was a teen. You could say she was his first love. Things were great, but the truth was that she was using him. She coaxed him into stealing things from a local pawn shop, and promised that they'd always bee together. He blindly trusted her. When he set off the alarm, she bailed. He was caught red handed, and swore that he'd never allow himself to be taken advantage of again. He isn't mean, but he isn't a nice person either. The truth is he doesn't care. He won't get upset when if he's called names, or smile over the things. His true self is hidden under a cold, quiet, metal armor.
Role Play Example:
Tasha: She looked at the man who was quietly reading his book. She pondered whether she should go over and introduce himself. Why not, she thought in her head. She walked up to him and held out her hand. "Hello, I'm Tasha Greens," she said. She had a friendly smile on her face.
Mamoru: He was deep into is book when a woman interrupted him. He didn't look up from his book. "Hello, I'm Tasha Greens," she said. He gave a little sigh closing his book. He looked up, and saw her friendly smile. "Mamoru," he said indicating that was his name. His face didn't have any particular emotion.
Tasha: She was surprised at his reaction. Most people would at least shake the other person's hand, and be more polite. "Just Mamoru?" She asked.
Mamoru: "Yes. It's just Mamoru," he said. "Is there something that you need?"
Tasha: "Nothing in particular, but I haven't seen you around town. I just thought I'd introduce myself," she said taking the seat next to him. The sofa's were nice and comfy. She curled up bringing her knees to her chest.
Mamoru: "Thank you for the greeting," He said. He was bored of his book, but wasn't in the mood to talk. He was aware that he should try to meet people, but didn't really care enough to put in the effort. "How long have you been here?" he asked in a quiet tone.
This character has a quiet nature. It isn't that he doesn't know how to behave socially, but it's that he DOESN'T want to talk. He'd rather LISTEN. One HUGE mistake I see with other characters is that if a character is similar to this, or just plain rude they won't continue a conversation. Yes, I do know that sometimes it's annoying when people are like "Ok, so why do I care what you name is," or "He just stared at the individual and wondered why they were talking to him." But in most cases it doesn't mean that they don't want to talk to you. If they didn't want to talk to you/interact with you or others they wouldn't have joined the role play.
{ My Input: However, in my experience it doesn't matter if your character is "nice" odds are that the douches/jerks/ will get the attention. So, if you want a character who is nice/quiet/etc remember don't expect yourself to be the center of attention. }
