Chapter 1

Change

KiBeom is a very friendly kid but among all of his friends, he chose her—Amber.

They were friends ever since they were young or at least at the limit of what they could still remember. He wasn’t the nicest friend she ever had but he was the best. She wasn’t the girliest(if that word exists) girl friend he had ever met but she was the best. They were best friends.

They were already on their last year in high school. Everything seemed normal until one winter day came. He asked her if he could sleep over at her place but she refused. She said that it’s not appropriate for a guy and a girl to sleep in a same room together if they’re not even married.

She was never like that. Not too long ago, she let him sleep over and didn’t even say a word to oppose. Did she feel uncomfortable? He asked himself out of curiosity but just let it go.

Then on her birthday, he gave her a gift. And when she opened it, she didn’t look quite pleased. She had this I’m disappointed look at her face and it made him feel bad.

“Didn’t you like it?”

“It’s… It’s not that. I really like it but…”

“But what?”

“You could have bought me something… a little girly.”

He didn’t expect her to say something like that. She would normally be happy whenever he gives her gifts, even if they were baggy shirts, sweat pants or sneakers that he bought from a really famous boutique for guys. But she said something unusual. It was something new to his ears.

One day, they went to the mall. They went shopping or at least he did all the shopping. It was weird when she suddenly walked in inside a cosmetics boutique. She looked for eye shadows, eye liner and lipsticks.

“Does this look good on me?”

Her words didn’t really exist in his dictionary. She never asked him that question. She wouldn’t normally care whether she looks good or not but this time she did. It felt like she wanted to look pretty or that she was becoming more and more like any normal girls—self-conscious.

They were having this conversation at school. They were talking about random stuffs that needed solutions or just something to talk about. Then he made a really funny joke. She laughed. But he noticed something odd. She still laughs the same—covering with the back of her hand as she laughs—but there was something different, like something has changed. He couldn’t tell whether it was the sound or simply… her.

Then he asked to bring her to Daegu and have a two days and one night vacation with him. She agreed.

They were at the back seat of the bus sitting next to each other quietly. In the middle of their journey, she fell asleep and suddenly crashed her head on his shoulder. She woke up and moved away from him. It was weird for him. They used to sleep on each other’s shoulders without any problem but then, she was just uncomfortable with him sitting next to her.

But he had the most new occurrence while he was with her. They were planning to attend a formal party. He expected her not to come but she did. He saw her at the party wearing a black mini dress with tiny ruffles at the end. Her perfect silhouette showed and he can’t seem to take away his eyes from her. She was beautiful.

He observed every move she made, even the simplest blink of her two round eyes. And there he realized, his friend… best friend was becoming a lady.

She wasn’t the so-called brother he used to call every time he needed comfort or help. She wasn’t the so-called brother who used to wear the same clothes as him. She wasn’t the so-called brother that doesn’t care what everyone else thinks. She had become a lady.

“Why are you staring at me like that?”

“I’m just… amazed.”

“Huh?”

“You’ve changed. But… in a really good way.”

And before he could even realize it, he, too, had changed. It wasn’t those physical changes, not even his personality. It was something else.

He didn’t realize something really new and significant.

He didn’t realize that he was… falling for her.

He would aimlessly stare at her and smile. She would blush the moment their eyes met. They were maybe… having real connections. It wasn’t brotherly-like connection but something stronger than that. It was love.

She was staring at her reflection by the pool and he was watching her from afar.

“Do you think I’m pretty?”

It was something he would hear from normal girls but he heard it coming from her. She wasn’t normal for him. She was special. And hearing those words from a special person, made those words special, too.

“Very pretty.”

He was being honest but she didn’t believe him. He knew she wouldn’t so he came closer to her and grabbed her arms and turned her to face him. He gazed at her wondering eyes for a moment before he pulled her into a deep kiss. And before he knew it, she was kissing him back. She loves me back. He thought and didn’t let go of their sweet passionate kiss.

They were waiting for this moment for a long time. They were both unsure at first but still were able to figure out their true feelings at the end.

She changed for him… for him to realize that his best friend is a girl. A girl who also falls in love.
