A Best Friend's Letters

Beyond Words

"Accept it, you guys won't be real. Let her believe that it was me. Because I can make her happy,"

It has been a week since the confrontation with Wooyoung, but Jessica just couldn't get what he said out of her head. Maybe deep inside she knew it was true, it was just that she didn't want to bring herself to accept it - accept the fact that he could make Tiffany feel normal, not her.

Jessica and Tiffany had been friends for a long time now - childhood friends for that matter. She still remembers the day she ignored Tiffany because she found her annoying: from her loud voice to cheery smile. She absolutely hated it then.

Funny, because she now misses it.

Anyway, Tiffany was popular in class back then. She was pretty, kind and smart - okay, smart academically: she wasn't smart enough to find out about Jessica's feelings towards her. And Jessica could never understand why Tiffany still chose to stick with her, the outcast of the school. She had initially thought that the younger girl did it out of pity, but after questioning, she realised that Tiffany pretty much did it out of her own will - "Pity? What are you talking about? I'm your friend because I like you very much!"

It was something a seven year old would say to every friend of theirs. But this was different, because Jessica could feel the sincerity, not to mention shock, in Tiffany's confession. And it was stuck in her head for the longest time.

"JESSI!"

Jessica snapped out of her thoughts as she turned her head to see Tiffany running towards her with a letter in her hand.

"JESSI, LOOK! ANOTHER LETTER!" The brunette lifted up her hand and waved the letter.

Sure enough, there was another letter: another letter from her to Tiffany, also the letter that Wooyoung would have claimed to write.

"From your secret admirer again? So what did she say?"

"She? Shouldn't it be a he since I'm a girl?"

It hurt that Tiffany had never once considered Jessica as girlfriend material - or that having a girl-girl relationship was totally out of the question.

"Ohh yeah, I said it wrongly. So what did he say?"

The blonde's voice deflated at the end of it all, completely uninterested in what Tiffany has to say about the letter. It wasn't like it even going to matter - she had zero chances.

Tiffany did notice the change in mood, as well as how she notices how hard Jessica was trying to hold it in. To someone who didn't know Jessica, they would think that it was just because she was a heartless b*tch who didn't care about anything. But Tiffany knew better , after being together for so long, Jessica was trying to not show that she was affected by it - she had her pride to think about.

"You really want to know? You sure?"

Jessica understands that she was caught. She honestly wanted to scream at Tiffany for being so dense. But then again, she couldn't bring herself to lecture the younger girl.

"Yeah," A grin on her face was the reason behind the smile on Tiffany's.

"Okay, here it goes,"

"I'm ready,"

Tiffany took a deep breath as she braced herself before flipping the card over.

"Dear Tiffany, I love you -That's it?"

Jessica couldn't help but burst into laughter as she watched Tiffany frown in disbelief. Honestly, she had so much in her mind when she was writing this card the night before. She wanted to tell Tiffany that it was her, that Wooyoung would pretend to be the one writing these cards to her, that she would always be there for her. But what Wooyoung said was right.

She thought about it and decided that this was going to be the last letter she would send to Tiffany.

"Be glad that he even confessed to you!"

-

The letters stopped appearing in Tiffany's locker which made the younger girl upset for the entire week. Jessica swore that if Tiffany pouts and whines at her again, she would go down to the nearest bookstore to buy a whole stack of cards and write until Tiffany smiles again.

"Jessi,"

"Yeah?"

"Do you know that your handwriting looks exactly like his?"

"Do-does it?"

"Yeah.. It's so odd,"

-

The day came by too fast, especially for Jessica.

And letters started coming in again. But this time, it wasn't from her.

"JESSI JESSI! WOOYOUNG CONFESSED TO ME! HE IS MY SECRET ADMIRER!!"

It didn't take a genius to know who was sending letters to Tiffany again. But it also didn't take a genius to realise that the person sending the letters now were not the same as the person before.

And Tiffany was smart.

"Jessi,"

"Yes?"

"I don't think Wooyoung was the one sending letters to me,"

Jessica didn't know if she should be alarmed or happy. To be honest, she was both. Happy that her friend was clever enough to notice the difference in the style of writing and penmanship. But alarmed that her friendship with Tiffany might come to an end if she were to ever find out that her secret admirer was Jessica.

"Then.. do you have any idea who it might be?" The older girl asked cautiously.

"No.. But he does sound a bit like someone I know,"

Jessica honestly feels more alarmed than happy right now.

"Who?"

Tiffany turned her head towards Jessica in surprise when the older girl seemed very interested in finding out who this someone is. She has never seen Jessica so curious about something before. So she teases her.

"Why do you want to know? Unless.... it was you who has a crush on me,"

Jessica choked on the water she was drinking as she eyes widen in shock and face blushing guility.

Tiffany hurriedly leaned forward to pat the older girl on the back to ease the coughing.

"ARE YOU OKAY? I was just kidding!"

"Ye-ah, just don't make such jokes anymore," Jessica wipes with a piece of tissue that Tiffany offered to her.

It wasn't a joke.

-

Like how I mentioned many times, Tiffany is smart.

So she probably wasn't as dense as Jessica thought her out to be.

Which also meant that she suspected Jessica.

"Jessi,"

"Yes?"

"How does he know so much about me?"

"He?"

"Yeah, my admirer,"

Jessica realises that Tiffany doesn't peg Wooyoung's name to her secret admirer - a sign that she was dead sure he wasn't the one.

"He probably stalks you," Which was partially true since she has been following Tiffany around.

"But he knows too much. It's like.. it's like he knows me,"

"Well, he should. Since he stalks you,"

"No! It's more than that. It's like he knows exactly how I think, my behaviour and everything. It's like he is my best friend. He has got to be someone I know, for sure,"

Tiffany jolted up from her seat and started walking out of the classroom.

"Hey, where are you going?"

"I'm going to find out who he is!"

-

It wasn't much of a surprise when she found out that the person was Jessica. Taeyeon swore she saw the blonde sliding a letter through the small slit. Besides, she mentioned that Yoona and the others were with her when it happened.

"You know, we always thought you two as a couple,"

It was only a surprise when she found out that her best friend had a huge crush on her.

-

Tiffany liked her admirer. Or maybe she just liked being crushed on by someone else.

Okay, maybe it was both.

But she really loved the letters that were written to her. Those that were sweet and most importantly, the words hit home. It's like he really knew her by heart, like he was the one who created her.

She remembers the time when she was clearly upset over her test results but continues to force a smile to hide her feelings. To others, she really did seem alright on the outside (she was always good at pretending), but the letter she got that day was "Dear Tiffany, there is no need to pretend to be happy about it. Just cry and let it out, you'll do better the next time round, I know it for sure (: PS: I REALLY MISS SEEING YOUR SMILE ): "

Tiffany really likes her admirer. And it isn't just because she felt loved. She really likes him for being such a caring and sweet person.

Okay scratch that, she really likes her for being such a caring and sweet person.

-

"Jessi?"

"Yeah?"

"I know all about the letters,"

"Wh-what?"

"At least I know who has been sending them,"

She does?

"Wh-who?"

"Stop pretending,"

She does.

"Who is prete-"

"Jessica."

The blonde was forced to look straight into Tiffany's eyes.

Jessica gulped. Tiffany looked serious about this.

"Jessica, stop trying to run away from this,"

"I'm not!"

"Then why are you lying to me?"

"I-I-"

"Jessica, I love you too,"

-

"Then what about Wooyoung?"

"He wasn't as nice as the guy in the letters,"

"You mean the fake letters or the real ones?"

"You're just trying to make me say that you're better than him,"

"Of course,"

"Aren't you a cunning girl,"

"But you love this cunning girl,"

"I do?"

"Yah, Tiffany Hwang!"

"You know what? You're right, I love cunning girls,"

"You're supposed to say you love this cunning girl only!"

"But I love cunning girls,"

"That's it, get off my lap!"

"But Jessi!! I was just kidding!"
