Jessica scrolls through her recent texts with Tyler, the boyfriend. She has taken a seat at the table in which Tyler had reserved for them 2 weeks beforehand in order to celebrate their 3-year mark together as a couple. As said, they have been in a committed relationship for 36 months and Tyler has yet to ask the question – fortunate enough for Jessica since she isn’t so sure if he’s the one for her. She isn’t too certain if she’d have the guts to refuse him when he asks her hand in marriage either, if it’s ever thrown her way.
They go way back, Tyler and Jessica: They got to know each other during senior year through their massive group of friends, met at weekend parties and said their heys when necessary. At the time their relationship was merely a polite nod in the school’s hallways. No drastic changes occurred between the two throughout the year and both of them naturally went to different universities and lived separate lives without concerning one another. Fast forward 3 years into working life, Jessica as an assistant fashion designer, and Tyler as a businessman, their lines of fate crossed. They did the usual nod thing at first but it seemed like their lines were tangled up in one too many ways, so Tyler just decided to say a hi on one particular night. Fast forward another year, Tyler asked her out and she said okay. She wasn’t too fond of the idea but she had no reason to reject him either. All she had were lots of inarguable whys and wherefores to say yes, including the age factor – hers, to be more exact. Tyler was great. He’d do anything for her. She’d do anything for him too because he’s nice towards her. Despite sometimes having the urge to smack him across the face because he has his moments as a member of the major squad, Tyler was wonderful – is wonderful.
However, tonight he’s a jerk. Tonight, she’s sitting in the same elegant restaurant, at the same annoyingly lovely reserved table, waiting for her douche of a boyfriend alone. It has been an hour since she has arrived. Everyone’s starting to glance her way apologetically because she is now known as the girl who has yet to order anything, who keeps on chugging down the plain taste of mineral water to calm her nerves – she has had to go to the ladies’ 3 times in the past 60 minutes – and hanging on for her dear life expecting the glimpse of the jerk’s arrival in a brasserie teeming with couples. And then there is also the waiter who’s beyond doubt so effing senseless
