A short excerpt II: Angst

Everyone in this world has roles – not one but many. One can be another’s sister and other people’s hero; a brother and a husband; an idol and a wife; a mother and an advisor; a mentor and a friend; a lover and a partner; a reality and a dream. The problem is: even us, the ones with thousands of characters have moments where we forget that other people too, live in the same universe, with the exact same rules and no exceptions. These “roles” can be interpreted as responsibilities because different persons carry different accountabilities. Some might be able to juggle them equally, perfectly, and fairly like you do. But many more are like me. We become one character at that moment and forget the existence of the rest. I come to be a performer – Girls’ Generation Jessica, and I overlook my significance as a sister, a lover, a daughter. I turn into someone’s daughter and sister – (just) Jung Sooyeon, and I fail to remember my duties as a lover and an entertainer. I become one’s partner – Sica, Sooyeon, Baby, Babe, Love, and I disregard the natural idea itself.
