The Mind

EXO: Beginning: The Mind

“Luhan!”

Kids of 5 to 8 squealed as a young boy the age of 13 came by. He smiled brightly as the little kids surrounded him. “What are we going to play, Ge-ge?” “Can we play catch the Deer again?” “I want to play princesses with Lu-Lu!” “No! Catch the Deer!!” The kids all began saying at once as the eldest of them, laughed brightly. He was their heart.

As you may have noticed, the young boy was Lu Han. He was the heart throb throughout his little town, 54th District, Gnijieb, Anihc. Everyone loved Luhan! He was kind, responsible and a handsome young man. Every girl fell head over heels for the boy after laying eyes on him. He was the eye candy. But he did have a small secret. . .

“No! I want to see Lu-ge-ge’s magic trick!” a young boy of 6 shouted out to the others. Luhan rubbed the back of his neck as the children began agreeing. “Yea! A magic show!!” they chanted, giving Luhan their cute puppy eyes.

Luhan crossed his arms. “Hm… I guess I could show you guys a magic trick if I receive a HUGE hug!” he said, stretching his arms out for a hug. The kids squealed as they rushed into his arms, causing him to crash into the ground.

Luhan laughed, seeing how much they wanted to see his ‘magic trick’. He hugged them tightly before allowing them to stand up. He stood up himself finally before looking around for an object. He set his eyes on a log nearby. It was long, think and looked a bit heavy. Would it do it?

“Alright! You guys ready?” Luhan asked. The kids squealed in excitement, which he took as a yes. The eldest faced in the direction of the log, taking in a deep breath. He held out his arms in front of him, hands in an almost clenching way. He squeezed his eyes shut before he could feel a heavy weight on his hands.

As if he was carrying it in his hands, Luhan took a step back. He gasped as he opened his eyes to see the log up in the air. He could hear the kids behind him, awe at him for the ‘trick’. “Make it spin! Make it spin!” The kids chanted, little hands in the air.

‘Alright, Luhan. You got one shot at this. Don’t screw it up this time.’ Luhan told himself. He gave into a large breath of air before moving his hands into large circles. Luhan watched as the log slowly began to spin in a horizontal way. He beamed at the success of his work as the kids cheered him on.

“Lu-gege is the best!”

“Lu gege, you’re so cool!!!”

“I want to be just like Lulu!!”

Luhan felt himself embarrassed about the praise as he set the log down, gently. He turned to see the kids smiling widely, chattering about Luhan and how cool he was. He didn’t want anyone to think he loved the praise but he REALLY loved the praise. He loved it even more when it was from the kids. When the adults praise him, he just takes it as a compliment and not much to it. But with kids? It was another level. He loved hearing what they think of his powers and him. Why?

“Awww, I just love you guys!” Luhan beamed, giving a huge hug to the kids. The kids squealed as they eagerly hugged the teenager. The kids let go, looking at the darkening sky. “Lu gege, do you have to leave again?” they asked, their voices tinted with disappointment. Luhan couldn’t help but feel his heart sink as he saw their faces. He was their heart.

“I’m home!” Luhan yelled as he set his bicycle outside. He was heartbroken to leave the kids but he had to come home since it was when his most favorite child came home from his school. Luhan smiled widely as he stepped inside the home. It wasn’t long until an answer finally came.

“LU GEGE!!!!” a voice came from the house.

CRASH!!!!

Luhan fell back outside, groaning as a little boy hopped on his stomach. “Lu gege you’re home!!” the boy squealed in delight. Luhan sighed heavily. “Wang Jiaer! What did I say about controlling yourself?!” Luhan scowled the young boy. Jiaer scowled at his older brother back. He got off upset, stomping his foot down. “I’m not Jiaer, Gege!!! I’m Jackson! How many times do I need to say it?!” Jiaer complained, his lower lip out.

Luhan rolled his eyes, smiling. “Alright, alright ‘Jackson’. How many times have I told you to control yourself?” ‘Jackson’ grinned happily before answering his brother. “31 times.” Luhan frowned before thinking of the days. “No, 310 times.” He corrected, crossing his arms. Jackson flung his arms around, groaning. “Oh my god, I was off by a zero! The worlds ending!!!” He cried.

“Aiyah, Jackson! When will you be serious?! You turn 9 and you act this way.” Luhan huffed, his hands positioned on his hips. Jackson copied, putting on a duck face. “Gege, I’m a big boy!” he replied. “Yeah but it doesn’t mean you can’t be serious!” “Gege!” Jackson crossed his arms, making a pouty face.

Luhan sighed as he patted his little brothers’ head. “Alright alright, forget it.” He said gently. Jackson beamed at his brother as he saw he was out of the danger zone. “Gege let’s play checkers!” He cried as he ran inside the house, leaving his older brother outside. Luhan sighed heavily, shaking his head at his younger brother’s quick change of moods. “Alright, I’m coming.”

The older one came up on the steps to see Jackson running back to him with the familiar game board. “I’m going to beat you this time, Gege!” he smirked with confidence. Luhan rose an eyebrow, his own confidence rising. “Oh, will you?” He grinned, setting up the game. Jackson grinned as he moved his piece a spot ahead. “I will.”

“THAT’S NOT FAIR! GEGE YOU CHEATED!!!!” Jackson ran a hand through his hair as he lost to Luhan. Luhan smirked, collecting the pieces. “What was it you said? You would beat me?” Jackson opened his mouth to rant how he messed up or some weird excuse when their mother called them.

“Jiaer! Luhan! Dinner!”

Jackson quickly exited the room, leaving his older brother, whining to their mother, “Mama, its Jackson!!” Luhan laughed at his cute brother’s complaining. He got up with the board in hand. He went to his room to go ahead and put the game up, before joining the rest of the family.

Luhan was setting the game underneath his futon when a small voice came into his head.

‘Help me…’

Luhan quickly looked up, noticing it was a young boy. “Hello?” he called out. He looked around his room, unsure if his hearing was going bad. He stood up, rubbing the back of his neck. He was about to exit when the boy spoke again.

‘Please help me… They’re hurting me… I just want my mommy…’

He turned quickly, his eyes widening as he could hear multiple voices.

“#5 is lacking, sir.”

“Hit him.”

“P-Please… No… No more.”

Luhan trembled as he could hear the voices get louder and louder. He dropped to his knees, clutching his ears, crying. He could hear the screams of the boy and sounds of skin getting hit

“I want my mommy!”

“Leave me alone!”

Luhan trembled as he could feel the cold sweat run down his back. He grew weak as he could hear the shouts, the screams get loud. He whimpered, holding himself now, lying on the ground. He could imagine a little boy, shackled in a dark room. It was as if the boy was seven years old…

Outside the room, Jackson frowned noticing his brother was not coming. He looked over at his mother who also frowned. “Weren’t you playing with you brother earlier?” she asked. Jackson nodded, scratching the back of his head. “I was sure-“

THUMP.

The two sharply turned their heads towards the loud sound that cut off Jackson. “Is Dad home?” Jackson asked. His mother frowned shaking her head. “He doesn’t come home until the morning.” She murmured, getting up. Jackson followed behind, asking questions about the noise. The two walked past the rooms when they heard soft whispering.

“I want my mommy… I want my mommy… Help me.” The voice said gently.

Both looked at each other, surprised. “I want my mommy… Just let me go…” it kept going. Their mother walked towards Luhan’s room which seemed to be where the noise mostly came at. “I don’t want to be here. I hate it here… I hate it… I hate it… I hate it…” The two slowly walked in and stood frozen in horror. “Gege?”

Lying there in the middle, was Luhan, trembling and muttering the words, “I want my mommy.”

It’s been weeks since Luhan’s incident. His mother was afraid of her son going nuts and called the doctor to check up on him every so often. It was annoying to have to explain but who would believe him? Just because he could lift things with his mind doesn't mean they would believe he had just gone through some sort of memory/flashback of somebody else’s. It was nonsense! Who ever heard of somebody hearing people’s thoughts?

Luhan sat up on his futon, staring at the wall. 'Flashback of somebody else's...' he thought, frowning. He didn't think about it before but if he was right, there was a boy out there going through that horrible, inhumane experience. It had to be right because why else would he see those horrendous things?

He could feel sick as he remembered how it felt. Cold iron on his neck, wrists, and ankles as he could feel his chest thump hard and loud in his chest.

Everything was coming back. The way the boy screamed and the hitting. Luhan hugged himself, silently crying. Why was he crying now, weeks since the incident? He didn't know why nor did he care. Everything was just wrong... What he felt was wrong... What they did to the boy was wrong...The boy looked so pure and innocent! Why-

"Gege..."

The crying teen looked up to see Jackson, peering into his room. "Jiaer," he said softly, wiping his tears. "What's up?" he smiled. Jackson didn’t complain as his older brother used his real name. He walked over to Luhan, studying his brother’s face. “Why are you crying?” he asked in an almost whisper. Luhan felt his heart sinking as he watched Jackson’s expression change.

“Why is Gege crying? I hate seeing Gege cry! I hate it!” Jackson stuttered out, bawling now. Luhan could feel his heart sink deep into his soul. His mind then flashed images of Jackson in the boy's place, crying and begging for their mother. He couldn’t help but cry. He didn’t know why he would even think of it. It was too horrendous. He wouldn’t let Jackson go through that.

Luhan pulled Jackson into his arms, crying, trying to calm them both down. “I’m so sorry, Jiaer… I’m so so sorry…” .he whispered. Jackson was now whimpering, holding Luhan’s skinny neck.

“Don’t cry, Gege,” Jackson whispered. “I hate seeing you cry.” Luhan held his younger brother, tighter, burying his face in his shoulder. “I won’t… Not anymore. I promise.” He whispered back.

“LU-GEGE!! You’re back!!!” The kids cried, running up to Luhan, who was settling his bike underneath the tree. Luhan grinned wide. “Yep! Did you miss me?” He asked, hands on his hips, chest out and proud.

“YE!!” the kids giggled, pouncing on Luhan, giving him a great hug. Luhan laughed as he held them close. He was satisfied with the kids answer. He let them go, knowing full well they wanted to play instead of being in his arms. “Lu gege, what do you want to play?” the kids asked. Luhan thought for a while. “We could play….” he trailed off, rubbing his chin. He played all sorts of games with the kids. And knowing the kids wouldn’t want to play the same games. It had to be different.

“Oh! How about Hid n’ seek?”

Luhan snapped his fingers as he exclaimed in joy. It was a game he never played with the kids but only with Jackson. The kids blinked as they gazed at the oldest. “Hide n’ seek?” They asked. “Yeah! You have to hide while I find you!” he grinned, ruffling one boy’s hair. The kids looked at each other before grinning wide.

“I want to play!”

“No, I want to play!”

“I want to play too!”

“I’ll be the best hider ever!”

“Nu huh!!! I will!”

“No! I will”

Luhan could only chuckle as the kids argue. “We’ll all play! But you guys have to go hide!” he said, shooing them with the back of his hand. The kids squealed as they ran off to find their places. The older boy only chuckled as he began to count.

The kids went to find the best places to hide. Each argued, loud enough for Luhan to hear, about the hiding spot. None had the intention of letting Luhan find them obviously.

Of course, Luhan knew quite well where they would hide but he decided to pretend just for them. “19, 20! Ready or not, here I come!” Luhan shouted out to the kids. He walked around, acting as if he didn’t know where they went. “Oh my! They were just right here! Where did they go?” Luhan gasped loudly. He could hear their little giggles all around.

‘Lulu gege will never find me!’

‘He’s so close! Ahhh!!! Go go, Gege!’

‘Lulu gege looks so amazing from this side…’

‘I just peed.’

Luhan blinked once or twice, stumbling back a bit. ‘Their voices… I hear them…’ he thought as he held his forehead. ‘I thought… Wait… One of them said I was close… If I’m right…’ He looked at the bush. ‘If I’m right… Does this mean I can actually…’ his thoughts trailed off as he moved towards the bush. He quickly moved it to see one of the children, Jun, in a ball. “Ah! Gege!” the little boy gasped shocked.

‘… read minds?’

Jun got out, crossing his arms. “I knew I should’ve been with Mia!” he huffed. Luhan laughed gently, ruffling his hair. “Maybe next time.” He looked towards the other hiding spots. ‘That was weird….’ he thought. Yeah he had a feeling they would hide in the bushes or somewhere obvious but…

“Let’s find the others, Lu gege!” Jun squealed as he began running to the others direction. Luhan snapped out of his own thoughts, now watching Jun run into the forest. He quickly acted. “Wait for me Jun!” he cried, taking a step. Then everything happened in the second his foot touched the ground.

‘Find the others!

‘They’re out there!’

‘Find them quick!’

‘Find them before it’s too late!’

Luhan widen his eyes, his ears hearing a high pitched ring. He groaned, holding his head. He breathed heavily, feeling as if something just banged his head with a hammer. Everything was a blur to him. His eyes couldn’t focus on the things in front of him. Just as he began to focus, he stumbled back just a bit. ‘What was that?’ he thought, shaking his head.

“AH!!! LU GEGE!!!”

Luhan widen his eyes as he heard Jun’s screams. “Jun!!!” He shouted as he ran off. What the hell just happened?! Why were the voices coming to him?! Those voices that he never heard of?! The boy's and the men's, what did it mean?! Pushing past bushes, Luhan gained several scratches. He could hear the other children scream as well. ‘What the hell happened?!’ he thought as he burst out of the bushes to see the children.

The children were huddled in a small group and in front of them was Jackson lying on the ground, bruised and battered.

“Jiaer!” He shouted, running to his little brother. He grabbed his brother, his heart sinking. Jackson’s hair was damp with red what looked like-

‘Blood.’

Luhan widen his eyes as he felt the blood on his palms. He could feel himself tremble. “Jiaer… W-Why-““G-Gege…” Jackson spoke very roughly and low, which gave him Luhan’s attention.

“W-What happened? Why are you like this?” Luhan sobbed, his tears no longer holding back. Jackson whimpered, weakly looking at his brother. “I-I tried, Gege… I tried to stop them.” He whispered, tears sliding down his face. “W-Who?”

‘#2 is here, sir.’

Luhan looked up, at the empty forest- Wait… Was it really empty?

“COME ON OUT YOU COWARDS!” He shouted, his teeth baring down hard against each other. He wanted to teach these people a lesson. They hurt Jackson. They tried to hurt the kids. He wasn’t going to let that pass. He was their heart.

Just as Luhan predicted, people came out. 10 or more men in black came out, holding what looked like a shield and…. Guns? Luhan froze at the sight. Why were they holding guns against children?! He couldn’t help but to snarl at the sight. They obviously wanted something or else they wouldn’t bother them right? But what was it? They mentioned #2 though… He turned to the kids who were pale as the silk Mrs. Xia made for his mother’s wedding dress.

‘Could it be they’re after the children....?”

Luhan looked back down at Jackson, who was glaring at the men. He knew Jackson hated them or else why would he even bother fighting them? He wouldn’t have risked so much unless he knew they couldn’t be threats. That’s- Wait…

Everybody felt their hearts sink as they watched 2 men in white step out. “Ah… #2.” One of the two had spoken. The man who spoken, had wavy hair with a pair of glasses with a bald man by his side. Luhan held Jackson close, glaring vicious at the men. “Leave us alone.” He demanded. He knew it all now. He should've known from the start. The people had come before he arrived. If #2 was one of the kids, then they would've taken them. If it was Jackson, he was sure they wouldn't have hurt him.

"I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon.... #2."

Luhan was #2.

Luhan snarled. "I don't have anything to do with you! Quit calling me #2 as if I’m an experiment you wretched bastard!" In all truth, Luhan was scared. He didn't know what the hell these people would do. He didn't want the kids or Jackson to get hurt. But still… He need to show off he was a strong independent person unlike what these people seem to think.

The male chuckled as he shifted his glasses. “I don’t think you want to call me that, LU HAN.” He responded gently, before looking at the men in black and nodding. The men who seemed to be in charge nodded and rose his hand. “Men, Aim!” Luhan widen his eyes as he watched the men take aim at the children. Luhan widen his eyes. Were they actually going to shoot the kids?

In horror, the man brought his hand down. “FIRE!” He shouted. “NO!” Luhan shouted after. He quickly shut his eyes. He brought both arms out from his sides to his front, stretched out as if they were in a box. He opened his eyes to see an iron bullet a bit above his eyes. He could see it was vibrating meaning it was stopped by some force. His force….

Luhan looked at the men. ‘Face forward.’ He ordered in his own mind. The bullets as if they had a mind, did as told, facing in the direction of the intruders. The men in black all stumbled back, sounds of their gear getting hit with others. It was obvious they were scared. Well, expect for the men in white…

“Impressive but I still think you’re a still an amateur.” The man replied before holding up a strange small device. There were 12 buttons on the device. Different colors and symbols. But the one he chose was the second…

“Now… Drop the bullets.” The man said in a demanding tone.

Luhan opened his mouth to reject but then came the voices. All were screaming, and crying for help. He dropped his hands, holding his ears. They kept getting louder then more he tried to hold it in. “G-Gah!!” He screamed, sweat drops sliding down his face.

“Gege!”

“Lulu gege!”

‘Fall!’ the pained boy shouted in his thoughts. He shut his eyes, shaking as the voices slowly disappeared. He panted heavily, on all fours, shaking. His gut was twisted into knots as his vision was a blur. Everything was a blur.

‘How did they do that? What the hell do these people want from me?!’ he demanded as he threw up, not being able to withstand more.

“I told you not to use that against him!” Luhan heard one of the men hiss. “John… He didn’t want to cooperate with us. I had-“

”Shut up! What if he didn’t survive that! He’s an amateur like you said! It’s a miracle he can withstand that!”

”Yes I know-“

”No you don’t! There are only 12 of them in this whole damn planet. Don’t fxxk it up next time Ray.”

Luhan looked up to see the other man scowling at the first. He panted as he weakly got up. He wobbled as he tried to maintain his balance. “You guys … just … want me….?” He asked within every breath. The men focused on him. “Of course. You have something we need,” The bald man replied, before waving his hand towards the other children and Jackson “These children mean nothing to us.” Luhan looked at Jackson who looked at him, studying what his older brother was doing.

Quickly, Jackson realized what his brother was doing. “Gege no! Don’t you dare!” he grunted, trying to get himself up. Luhan grit his teeth as he waved his hands down, his force pushing Jackson down. “Jiaer… I’m… I’m sorry.” He whispered.

“Lulu gege… “Jun cried out. Luhan looked over at the children who were watching him shakily. ‘They’re scared…. Of course they would be… Their children…’ Luhan thought as he gazed at each of the pernicious children. Each of them, he watch them grow. Each of them he loved. Each of them were his. ‘My children…’ he thought as he pulled every ounce of energy to smile.

“We’ll play Catch the Deer next time, alright?” Luhan smiled, knowing how the kids would react. “Gege, I don’t want to play Catch the Deer! I don’t want to play any games! I just want Lulu gege!!” Cheng, the youngest, cried. Luhan softened his eyes as he listened to them. He looked at Jackson who was struggling against the force he put. “Gege…. Please don’t….” Jackson whispered, tears streaming his face.

Luhan grit his teeth, trying hard to hold back the tears. “I-I’m sorry…” he whispered, walking to the men in white. He could hear the children and Jackson crying for him to stop. He could imagine the pain on their faces. He just wanted them to be safe.

“Good decision, #2.” John smiled brightly, showing his white teeth. Ray just looked at him, fixing his glasses. Luhan looked down. He didn’t know think his life was going to be this horrendous. He didn’t expect this. He didn’t expect any of this. He looked up, opening his mouth before something hit the back of his head, causing him to black out.

“Take a small nap, #2… It’ll be a long ride…”

“GEGE!!!”

“LULU GEGE!!!”

He was their heart….
