I Promise

Description

Hope.

An emotion, a poison and a remedy all at once.

Hope was something Lee Jiyeon never lost since Jungkook's departure.

It was always there, no matter how hard she tried to push the feeling away. And the more she tried to forget about that small spark that was always inside her - the one that kept whispering "he will come back" - the more it hurt her both physically and mentally.

So eventually, she stopped trying altogether.

The feeling only grew bigger and bigger, and her longing for his presence grew stronger and stronger.

It couldn't have been good for her (already) damaged mental state to be thinking about him so much, so often, but she couldn't control it no matter how hard she tried to.

It only impacted her more and more as the days grew longer and the nights shorter.

People say you should always have hope. She says bull

Why? It was the exact reason why one freezing night, whilst her attention was directed 'elsewhere', her car skidded on an icy road, resulting in a serious accident. She hadn't even noticed the moistness on her arm until a metallic smell began drifting up her nose, and sirens started flashing across the streets.

Hope, Jiyeon decided as she was lifted onto the stretcher, was an evil thing.

Foreword

"N-no! Don't go!"

He smiled sadly when he saw the younger girl tugging at his shirt, looking up at him with big, glassy eyes threatening to spill at any moment. They almost changed his mind, but he knew he couldn't. He had to go.

"I have to, Jiyeon-ah." He said, gently removing her tiny hands. "You know I do."

"But then who will play with me and sing me songs?" She sniffed, wiping an escaped tear with the back of her hand.

"You'll make new friends while I'm gone," He replied, though it pained him to think she probably wouldn't remember him by the time he'll be back. She was too young, too naive. He quickly brushed off the thought. He had to remain strong for her.

"I don't care!" She screamed, burying her face into his shoulder, wettening the soft fabric. He jumped at her sudden outburst, then patted her comfortingly on the back.

When the sobs died down, he firmly held her by the shoulders and looked her in the eye.

"How about this," He began. "I'll come back when I'm older, and then we can spend the rest of our lives together."

"Y-you will?" She asked uncertainly, her heart leaping at his intense gaze.

The corners of his lips lifted slighty and he nodded, pulling the nine-year old girl in for one last hug before whispering in her ear two words that made her smile.

"I promise."
