I Do

"Open your eyes.." She said.
As I did, I saw the beach, the warm sun... The summer wind blowing through me.
"Do you like it?" She asked, her warm voice was bright and beautiful.
I only nodded, as she held my hand.
"Happy Anniversary."

My alarm rang, disrupting the seemingly perfect dream.
I sat up, wiping my eyes. I got my thick journal on my side table and a pen and began to write what I dreamt about.
It was always the same vague and realistic dreams, she was always there...
Her.
The girl with the white pale skin and warm smile.
Dreams of vibrant and vivid colors..
Places that seem so familiar, yet foreign.
Dreams that seem so real, that it feels like it already happened before.

My journal was almost full, it's been years since I first dreamt of these...
I've filled fourteen journals in my whole existence.
This was the fifteenth one.
I sighed... When will I ever meet her?
I got up and went to the shower.

Another day in this dreary place.
It seems so ordinary.
Same old routines come and go.
Get up, write about dreams, shower, dress up.
Go to work, attend support group at three, reminisce and discuss about your problems, leave at four, shop for food ingredients, go home, cook dinner at six, eat at seven, then eight until nine thirty is free time, nine thirty-five is bath, at exactly ten, I'd sleep.
The only beautiful and unique things in my life, are these strange dreams.
Strange dreams of a girl I barely knew...
Strange dreams containing these feelings.
Yet all these are strangely familiar.

In this dull, gray, gloomy world, such a heavenly and vivid beauty cannot possibly fit in.
As I entered the support group's meeting place, everyone was there already.
This was a support group for people who lost people they love in accidents or assaults so that they can feel better... We were also really good friends.
There was Seohyun and Yuri, the twins, both lost their parents in a severe car crash.
Yoona, who lost her brother in a plane crash.
Sunny and Sooyoung, a young couple who lost their child when Sunny had an accident while she was pregnant.
Jessica, Yuri's girlfriend, lost her parents in a fire that was set on by accident, she seems the strongest among us, but at the same time, she's the most vulnerable, she only has her sister left.
Hyoyeon, who was now a psychiatrist and who formed our small group, who lost both her siblings when a man tried to rob them, and he shot her siblings.
Then there's me.
Back then, when I was thirteen, I was left all alone. Recovering from an accident that I could never remember, yet I knew that I lost a lot of important people and things in my life.
My mom, my dad, my siblings, and many memories of my childhood.
The only memories I have now, are the ones from when I was thirteen, until now...
And the journals.
I basically grew up with four of the people here, the twins Yuri and Seohyun, Jessica, and Hyoyeon. They've been good friends, helping me with recollecting all the memories I lost.
My grandma and grandpa help me with other more personal memories, they're pleasant company. They are the only ones who see color in this dreary world.
I can see why... They both love each other so much.
But there are more empty spaces in me, there's a hole in my heart that hasn't been filled in, something missing.
Questions left unanswered, stories left undone.
Identities still unknown.

"Do you know who I am?"
My eyes flew wide open, and the blue skies greeted my sight, with white clouds and the greenery all around.
I was lying down, on someone's lap. The smell of fragrant flowers, green grass, and someone's vanilla perfume was nearby.
Her hand was playing with my hair. I knew who it was immediately...
Once again, she asked.
"Do you know who I am?"

I woke up, there were no alarms today, and the sky was still dark.
I tossed and turned around bed, but the dream was still in my mind...
And her sweet voice that sang those words out like a song.
I turned the lamp on and got my journal and started to write.
It seems so surreal, these dreams, it felt like they were all real.
Like it happened before.
I was done writing, I only got one page left.
I sighed and set the journal back into my drawer.
I got up. It was a Saturday so I could do anything I wanted.
I turned the television on and selected a movie.
It's 3:45, I can handle this.
In the middle of the movie I suddenly stopped, my head was hurting, it was like this if I remember something.

"Taeng, Taeyeon-ah!"
"Yeah?"
"Will you come back?"
"Come back? Duh, I always come back here, you know that, silly."
"B-but..."
"Yah, I'll come back... I'll do anything to come back."
"Promise?"
"I promise."
Flashes of light, the mysterious girl smiling and calling me.
It all felt so real...

I panted as the pain fades away.
Was that a memory? Did I once knew this girl?
I looked around me, my mind in shambles.
I stood up, slowly, took out my phone and called my closest friend.
"Hyo..."
"Oh, Taeng. Are you alright?"
"Hyo, can you come over? I think I had another flashback."
"Another one? Alright, I'll be there soon."
And soon, she came at my door.
We sat on the couch as I explained everything to her.
"So... The girl in your dreams... Was real?"
"She was, it was a memory I guess. So all of the things...."
"Taeng, we need to be sure. What if..."
"I wanted to meet her."
"What?"
"It felt real. She knew me, and it seemed like I knew her."
"... Tell me, where do these dreams usually take place?"
"In a beach. A beach..... I probably knew this, I think I used to go there."
"Back then." Hyoyeon said. "Before we moved to Seoul, we used to live in..."
".... Chungcheongnam-do?"
She nodded. "Near the beach."
"We always went there."
She pondered for a moment until she said.
"Pack up, we're going out for a trip."

"We're all going?"
Everyone in our group was packed in Hyoyeon's van.
"Well yeah, YOU CANNOT GO WITHOUT US." Yuri exclaims.
I sighed and rolled my eyes. "Just because we're going to-"
"Also because I invited them." Hyoyeon says.
"What?"
"Well... I'm gonna pay for our lodging and stuff anyways."
"I can pay for mine."
"Nope." Hyoyeon said, buckling her seatbelt. "It's your moment, we'll be here supporting you."
I nodded. "Thanks."
"Anytime, Taeng."

The sky was lighting up slowly as the sun rises...
The beach was kind of dark...
It was dawn...
"Would I get answers?" I asked myself. "I've been in here for too long..."
"You always knew the answer..." She said. "It's always been there in your heart, Taeyeon-ah."
"But it's been years... What if I don't really know? I don't even remember you... I can't remember anything."
She finally held my hand. "Taeyeon-ah... It's there, your heart knows... Just believe."
I looked down. "C-can you tell me your name then?"
"My name? My name is...."

I woke up.
I was in the hotel room.
I reached in for my bag, and got out my journal.

August 1st...
She told me, I knew her...
She gave me a hint...
Was she a part of me? Will I remember her?
She knew me, but I didn't know her...
Could it be?
Where will I get my answers?

I closed it and placed it back in my bag. Hyoyeon was still sleeping... It's 5:30 am...
The sun's gonna rise soon.
I went down to the beach. And...
This place...
It's where my dream took place.
And... The sky...

"Oh sunrise..." I heard someone say. "Sunrise, she's been gone for too long. I knew that she's not dead. She's alive. Make here come back please. It's my birthday, and I want her back."
I looked towards the direction of the voice.
Clad in a sweater and shorts, was...
The girl in my dreams.
Truly, it was her. I wasn't dreaming...
She looked at me, her eyes wide with shock and recognition.
"T-Taeyeon-ah?"
"Y-you know me..."
"Of course I know you!" She said, running to me. Enveloping me in a hug.
"It's been so long Taeng... But I've always loved you."
I blushed at her statement. She pulled away, then asked me. "But... Do you know who I am?"
I looked into her brown eyes. My heart screamed the answer, she was right, I knew it all along.
I pulled her in for a soft kiss, her lips were ice cold, but was soon warm once our lips came in contact.
I pulled away and said. "Of course I know you... And remember you..."
I held her hand, as I remember all the things I knew from my dream... And soon, I knew.
"You're Tiffany, and you are my everything. Even if I couldn't remember a lot of things, you were always there, it's like, you were helping me to remember... All the things they didn't know."
She smiled and said. "Well... Taeng, now that I've found you... I'll always be with you, and I will help you remember everything... About us."

It's been days...
Days since Tiffany moved in.
She was the sweetest person, she doted on me, she took care of me, she helped me remember a great deal of things, things we only knew, things we kept as secrets.
She was mine, and I was happy to have her.
"Taeng..."
"Yeah?"
"Marry me?"
"What?"
"We've loved each other for so long Taeng... I've never dated anyone else, I've always waited for you... And I want us to last. Taeng..." She said, holding a beautiful diamond ring.
"Will you marry me? Taeyeon-ah?"
I smiled as I knelt in front of her. "Yes, I do. Fany-ah."
In this dull and boring city, she was the light who gave color to it all.
And I was so lucky to finally have her back.
