Fate

Laugh With Me

She was always by herself. Whether it be sitting in class, or standing outside waiting for the school bus. Tiffany couldn't help but watch Jessica, it was something that she was aware was uncharacteristic of herself to do so. Tiffany was your typical bubbly teenage girl, whose only problems consisted of how much homework she had and whether she would be able to get it done on time. She wasn't much of a complainer and normally let things slide past her. She liked to see the beauty, the positive in just about anything and everything. She was as bright as a ball of sun and almost always floating on cloud nine. Pretty cheesy you might say, but that was just her, and because of her positive nature she had plenty of friends and was generally well-liked. Once you got to know Tiffany, you couldn't help but want to be around her for long periods.

This was what puzzled Tiffany...no matter how many times she had sat down next to Jessica, or tried her best to communicate with her classmate, the girl would remain detached. She didn't understand what it was exactly that she was doing differently from all the other kids. When new people entered their school, Tiffany was the first one to make them feel welcome to the community, sometimes she didn't even have to, a teacher would assign the new kid with her. Yet, no matter how many times Tiffany had tried and failed to make Jessica respond, it would fall through.

It was the end of school and she was walking in a group of three with her friends. They, on either side of her, were chatting animatedly amongst themselves about the usual things like the boy they liked, or how weird a teacher's tie looked today, or what television show they were going to watch when they got home. Tiffany normally participated in these conversations, but not today. She was pursed abnormally so and felt incredibly weak. Her mind solely fixated on one particular girl. Jung Jessica, of course.

Today, Tiffany had caught Jessica sitting by herself in their classroom eating her packed lunch. Tiffany was slightly confused about this, considering that was not allowed. All Tiffany had done was go over and question the girl, and in return, Jessica had ignored her. Tiffany had felt the pang in her chest at the time, as she was not used to such a gesture. Okay, so she didn't expect Jessica to jump all over her and have a long, tireless debate about school rules or anything similar, but still. She wished Jessica had at least had the decency to look up at her and acknowledge that she was trying to converse.

''Fany...are you coming with us?''

Tiffany sighed, ''I don't know...I'm kind of feeling funny today.'' she responded. Her friends looked disappointed and slightly worried.

''Is anything wrong?'' one of them, Kwon Yuri, asked.

Tiffany shook her head, ''nope. Just feeling kinda queezy today.'' she smiled as wide as she could, hoping that she looked natural enough. Her friends weren't convinced, that was pretty obvious.

''Alright, well get better soon'' Lee Sunny said, placing a hand on Tiffany's shoulder, ''and make sure to get yourself to school tomorrow. I'd die, we have geography then and I am in no way or hell sitting next to Sungmin.''

Tiffany gave a weak smile, ''alright. I'll be going this way then. Bye.''

''I'm serious!'' Sunny rapped a hand on Tiffany's back pack as if it were a drum set.

''Oh, get over it, Sunny. It's obvious he's got the hots for you. Just give in already.''

Tiffany heard the two lightly arguing behind her as she made her way home.

Her house was nearby the park. In the summer-time she enjoyed rushing into the kiddie's playground inside and getting a chance on the swings, especially after school. She had a strange urge to go in, but now that it was winter, she wasn't too sure. Winter seemed to give the park a bad reputation, wherein, summer it was the place to be. She found herself standing just outside the park gates and peering inside at the dark and desolute area. She clutched onto the shoulder straps of her backpack and took a deep breath before venturing any further. She figured if she could scream loud enough someone would hear her and voila! she'd be safe. Anyway, all she wanted was to hang around the swings area for a while.

Perhaps it was fate which caused Tiffany to make this decision. Clearly she wasn't aware anyone would actually be inside the park, so it wasn't brought upon motivation. Tiffany looked around, from left to right and through the looming trees near the kiddie's playground, hoping that no one was secretly hiding somewhere. Sometimes there were reports of drug-dealers or gangs who would hide behind trees so as not to get caught. Mentally she praid that she would make it out alive, and the more she thought, the more she figured what she was doing was ridiculous. First of all, going onto the swings in a not particularly idealistic season, and second of all, quite possibly risking her life just to play about? it didn't make sense, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't move backwards. She was walking forward with every step. This was why, when she looked back on this, she pictured it as fate.

Finally reaching the swings area, she felt her heart leap out of her chest. She could have sworn she had gasped out loud when she caught sight of the girl, Jessica, swinging herself. Jessica wasn't really swinging, more like dragging her feet against the ground with weak pushes, and also she appeared to be 'out' of it. Tiffany, gingerly walked over, and for the first time, she retreated. Looking at Jessica, and remembering all the other times she had approached her classmate, she lost all will to bother. Why? why would she bother when she would only embarass herself? Jessica wasn't going to suddenly speak to her. If she wouldn't speak before, then what were the chances that she would now?

Tiffany didn't want to go on the swings, but at the same time she didn't want to go home. She still wanted to do something in the kiddie's playground. She walked over to a small slide and pressed a hand on the edge of it. She brushed her fingers across the steel ladder. She knew it was impossible of her to use this slide without getting stuck somewhere on it. She walked over to the benches and plopped down on top of it, thinking she would wait for Jessica to finish. Every now and then, she glanced towards Jessica to see if the girl had noticed her, but nope, as usual Tiffany was invisible.

Tiffany pulled out her ipod from her backpack pocket. She clicked a few buttons, popped her headphones in, and then pressed the shuffle button. Whenever she listened to music, she would block out the world around her and almost forget everything that was happening until reality would crash down on her. In this instance, that was what happened.

One minute she was listening to her ipod, to the lyrics resonating through her ears and processing inside her head, when she heard the loud thud. She clicked her ipod on pause, and turned to everywhich direction with her heart beating. She half-expected some scary monster or ghost to pop it's head up at her, but instead found her eyes laying upon a fallen body.

Jessica, her long blonde hair spooled out on either side, with her face on the ground.
