Chapter 8: Try Harder Next Time.

Sons of the Cull

What’s in a happy ending but unexplored tragedies? He called her Klementine. Dryads keep themselves to themselves, and Junhoe often finds himself dangling from tree branches. Cue the endearing chance encounter, typical misunderstood antagonists, enduring “love.” The minute details of their bond don’t matter.

“What matters is correcting a mistake,” Seungyoon, a witch of normal proportions, connects the dots.

There’s one question nobody’s asking: who was she?

More importantly: who was she to Junhoe? Interspecies relationships are few and far between. Cowards label experiences as twisted cautionary tales. Junhoe doesn’t acknowledge restrictive adverbs like “not” or “never;” he makes a hobby of dismissing good intentions.

“It’s unnatural,” Seungyoon concludes, pacing circles over charred drapes and toppled cauldrons—Jinhwan is apt to throw a fit when he stops running for his life. “Vampires: cold-blooded flesh; remnants of man’s folly; why’re you so special?” Plucking excess skin from the dull tip of his crow quill, he goes to work on my fourth Apollo’s Rune.

Magical effects neither stack, duplicate, nor transfer. Half-breed werewolves already proved miracles of Nature result in unnatural monsters of the imagination. Junhoe’s pursuit of happiness was doomed at the starting line—and Klementine’s dryad sisters knew it. She grew old, and he grew hungry; the supernatural world is filled to the brim with clichés.

“You strike me as a lizard with a big mouth,” Seungyoon finishes with a flick of his wrist. “What keeps those fangs from yapping about?” Junhoe opens wide at every opportunity, embracing what man made us.

Sensing the approach of a fellow big mouth, I ask, “Do you mean to kill me?”

Skulking behind my tortured torturer, Donghyuk stands upright. Scaled skin stretches, glassy eyes buried beneath a vortex of teeth. Globs of spit melt Seungyoon’s cranium, venom burning brain cells. His eyes roll back, body falling onto Donghyuk’s extended jaw.

Single black feather fluttering in the natural breeze, I bid farewell to the presumed evil villain of our tale, “Try harder next time.”

“Hello, Bobby,” Junhoe greets as I laugh.

“Just in time,” I compliment, finally freed from the wicked witch’s dastardly double-knotting skill. Birds screech far off. Enemy forces signal their arrival with slow flaps of heavy wings. The culling is brought to Jinhwan’s stoop by Nature’s will damned.

“Miss me?” Hanbin boasts a sharp smile—it’s all in the diet.

Jinhwan says boys should wage war outside; it builds character. Four valkyries lead the force flocking north for springtime’s bloodbath. They destroy for the questions no one’s asking. We survive for our right to tragic endings.

Chapter 12: I had a little trouble following - partly because I'm just not familiar with the characters or their names at all - but it made sense in the end. (:

Chapter 12: WAIT! WAAAIIIIIT. I KNEW IT ALL ALONG :0 KNEW I WASN'T OVERTHINKING IT. I WAS OVERTHINKING OVERTHINKING IT :0 ppbbbbffff
So to review Bobby makes a wish that he committed the killing of the Culling, at which point the Universe reroutes history to ensure that Bobby committed the crime rather than his partner in crime, Hanbin. This is because Bobby doesn't believe (after)life is worth living without companionship, right? That's what I gather from this. What a disaster :p Hanbin was responsible all along, and to save his friend and ensure he's never lonely, among other reasons I'm sure, Bobby takes upon himself all of the blame and thus subjects himself to execution. 'Til the bitter end, Bobby mocks the situation he finds himself in, and even mimics the final words of the Culling. Man. Man oh man. Even if I was right (partially, anyway) the circumstances by which the crime was committed exceed all expectations. Allow me to compliment your thoughtful planning. The ending of this story kinda just leaves me awe-inspired. Or awe-struck or something :p The parallels to the first chapter make this an incredibly poetic conclusion to this tale of destiny and camaraderie. Liked this story, Lily. Even despite the roller coaster of emotion, twists and turns. But hey, c'est la vie.

Chapter 11: :0 Poetic. So it was BOBBY who done it :0 :0 :0 What a revelation. I legit thought it was Hanbin who ate the Culling, just because he was the least suspicious of the group and was constantly referenced as a charming prince. Also thought Hanbin being "the prince" was in reference to some kind of Machiavellian mindset that Hanbin was known to have. Guess I overthought it :p Though this chapter was action-packed and much was revealed, what we got wasn't at all what I expected. Certainly not black and white. If I'm interpreting the circumstances correctly, Bobby is responsible for the murder and consumption of the Culling only after he makes the wish at this point in time. So it's almost like Bobby didn't do it, but after being framed for doing the killing, as well as being persecuted and on the run for so long, he wishes that he really had done it, ensuring his own destiny as the culprit. Hope I'm getting that right, but I'm sure I'll see for sure in the next chap. Interesting that Mino refers to the Culling as his mother. Also Bobby straight up told someone " to " this chapter :p haha. What a guy. Can't wait for the finale :)

Chapter 10: So Junhoe ate his dryad girlfriend when she got old onetime? :0 And Bobby was trapped this chapter by a villainous madman, racist against vampires. Bobby even got an Apollo rune :/ But at least Jinny's here, so I imagine that gets cleared up soon. I was surprised Donghyuk got action this soon and this important in this chapter. Also can we talk about how Suengyoon got killed (viciously and goopily, I might add) SO quickly. :p Guess the man just had a one-track mind. Seems to me like after the killing of the Culling Valkyries and witches like Seungyoon took the tragedy and made the war about anti-vampirism rather than retribution for an important death. If that makes any sense :p could be rambling. Glad to see the boys together again :)

Chapter 9: Realizations and revelations abound in this chapter. This chapter revealed to me the fact that Jinwhan has always lived in North America :0 and and this story has been cross-continental this whole time. So our party was in Europe, and while in a forest (presumably) and Hanbin disappears, at which point Bobby and Junhoe make a break for America once more. Successfully reaching America (and thereby reaching Jinwhan) our party still sans Hanbin) now reviews their future prospects. And the next chapter will happen three/four months from now when they have to go on the run again from Valkyries. Didn't know the whole nursery rhyme/saying was "Cross my heart and hope to die, stick a needle in my eye, wait a moment I spoke a lie, I really never wanted to die" before today. Interesting to get some more context for the story and also learn that snakes can become vampires too :0

Chapter 8: Got some exploration on the topic of vampire immortality. I still find it interesting that fire is a snake-vampire weakness in this universe. Although I suppose it makes sense considering how harmful fire typically is to corporeal beings. I think Bobby feels necessary as a vamp the way I feel spiders are necessary for other insects perceived as pests :p And two knew stuck up Valkyries to get to know. These ones sporting the look of warriors and members of some high society. It's a shame about the ghost(s) and their forest. As far as the who-done-it aspect of this story thus far, I swear it's either Hanbin or Bobby, and Bobby is far too easy of a solution to the mystery. Junhoe is far too airheaded to be the culprit. However I certainly should know more before I absolutely want to know more about these characters before I lay down my official indictment. :) Hopin' for an update soon. When it's well and ready, of course.

Chapter 7: I love that this is here :p heehee. I very much look forward to solving this mystery once and for all. I'm gonna feel real good if I can guess who done it before you officially reveal it :3
