Hey idiot, I love you

Boys don't fall in love with sad girls

You woke up early that morning as every single Thursday. Your life was monotonous and boring. You woke up and eat, read, watch movies and sleep. That was all you did. Sometimes your friends visited you or you went out with them, but just sometimes. It was always the same except for Thursdays. Some part of you hated Thursdays with all your heart, but the other one waited for them excited.

You got dressed and put the book you just finished reading in your bag before you went out. It normally took to the bus around 30 minutes to arrive to your destination, but that day the traffic was really light and you got there in less than a quarter of hour. Perfect, that gave you 15 more minutes in hell. You sighed and got into the hospital.

You hated that place. It was so depressing. And the atmosphere was even getting more depressing as you got closer to the cancer ward. Cancer; the only word could make you shiver of pure fear. It was always unexpected; you could be fine and then one day you were not. It was an illness that never treated anyone differently. It didn't matter if you were eight or eighty; it chose its victims indiscriminately. It chose the kid that was sit in from of you with his mother, the old woman that was quiet in the corner... and it chose you too. Doctors said you were young and strong enough to go through it and that you were lucky because it wasn't an aggressive cancer. They were so sure you were going to get over it; they were so positive... It was said that in the 87% of the cases the cancer was completely removed. But it was cancer, aggressive or not. You can’t ever hang onto the statistics.

You waited 20 minutes watching the sadness in everybody's faces as they came and went when they called your name. The treatment didn't take long and it only left you a little bit tired and a light headache. It could be much worse, it could gave you heaving or leave you exhausted.

"You're improving a lot. A few more weeks and we'll be able to change the treatment into something lighter", the doctor said. "You have a great attitude towards this and your mood helps a lot. Whatever it's making you this happier, keep doing it", he smiled.

You got out of the hospital with a really good mood. You wanted to finish that treatment so bad and you were seeing the improvement yourself. With a smile on your face, you went to a near cafe. The source of your happiness. You ordered a juice and a sweet and handed the book you were carrying in your bag to your regular waitress.

“Anything for me today?”, you asked. She nodded.

“I’ll bring it in a sec”, she smiled before she left. As you began to eat, she appeared with another book in her hand. “Here”, she said. You took the book and opened it, reading the phrase writing with pen.

“Hey idiot, I love you”, it read. It was supposed to be a phrase that summarized the book. You smiled to yourself; you were sure it was going to be one of those love-hate love stories that you loved so much.

You paid for your food and rush to home. As you as you got in, you lied down on the couch and began to read the book. You were right about the love-hate relationship. It was funny and the comments that the original owner wrote in almost every page were hilarious. And yes, that was what made you so happy. It’s better to start from the beginning. When doctors said you had cancer you felt your world getting destroyed. You didn’t tell anyone, not even your family or friends and you were on the verge of depression. You used to go directly home after every session. But one day it was raining really heavily and you didn’t want to wait in the hospital for the rain to stop, so you ran to a nearby cafe. As you sat, you realized someone left a book on the table. You were going to give it to the waitress but first you opened it out of curiosity. You couldn’t help but laughing. It was full of comments. They were about the plot, the characters and even things that didn’t have anything to do with the book like, “this reminds me the time my brother threw my food. He laughed as if it was the funniest thing ever. He didn’t laugh that much when I cut his hair when he was sleeping.” You continued reading and didn’t stop until you finished it. It was a very short book, so it didn’t take you long. You couldn’t stop smiling. It was the first time in a long that you smiled. Before you left, you said the waitress that someone forgot their book and gave it to her.

The following Thursday you decided to go to that cafe again. To your surprise, the waitress came with something for you.

“Someone left this for you”, she said. It was a book and a rose. You took them and read the note on the cover.

“Since it seems you really liked the last book, I’m sure you’re going to love this one. Take your time, you can’t keep it and returned it next Thursday. The rose is because… well, it’s just beautiful.” You looked around surprised. Was it the same person that left the book last week? You were sure it was. But then… was she or he watching you as you read the book? Gosh, that was so embarrassing. But that thought soon left your mind as you got lost into the book.

And everything started like that. Every Thursday, without fail, a new book and a rose were waiting for you. It was as if the person leaving them knew you needed to be cheered up in Thursdays. At first you only read the books and the comments, but then you began to write your own comments and replies; but always in a paper that you put between the pages, you wouldn’t ever have dared to write in somebody else’s book. It felt sometimes that the person behind the books was talking directly to you and you were like having a real conversation. If that person asked anything, you replied in a paper and then you got another note in the next book.

You weren’t sure but you felt it was a boy. Just the way he wrote… it had to be a boy. It didn’t take long for you to find out. You asked him in a note, even when it made you die of embarrasses, and he confirmed your suspicion. Little by little, you felt like falling for him. Maybe it was stupid since you didn’t know him, but there was a connection between you both. You didn’t need to know him to know that. And it looked as if he was feeling the same. He asked you to meet one day but you rejected the idea. It wasn’t because you didn’t want to meet him, you were dying to but you were scared. Scared that he could run away because of your cancer. People didn’t always stay when there were problems. And who wanted to be with an ill and sad girl anyway?

You sighed as you placed the book on the table. You really wanted to finish it but it was already too late and you needed to rest. You finished it next morning. You wished you could share books more often because a week seemed an eternity. Maybe you could ask him…

You took a piece of paper and wrote your question before put it between two pages. The rest of the week was, oh guess… boring. It was the same as always; except for the fact that your doctor called and asked you to come next Wednesday instead of Thursday because he needed to go to a conference of something like that. As you got out of your session on Wednesday, you went to the cafe. It was raining as heavily as the day you found the first book.

“Anything for me?”, you asked.

“Sorry, not today”, she said apologetically.

“Okay”, you replied. Of course there was nothing; it wasn’t Thursday. You were sure you weren’t going to find anything but you didn’t lose anything trying. You sighed and put the last book in your bag again; you’d return next day. You were about to leave when you bumped into someone.

“I’m sorry”, a masculine voice said.

“It’s fine”, you replied. You lifted you head and looked at the person in front of you. “Sehun?”, you asked surprised.

“Oh hi! How are you?”, he smiled.

“I’m… I’m fine”, you finally could say. You couldn’t believe you meet him after such a long time. You used to be together at high school, he was a really good friend and you were secretly in love with him but never confessed. Well, that was why it remained a secret obviously. You never fought or anything, but he moved to another city and you end up losing contact.

“I’m so glad to see you”, he smiled again. “Do you want to take anything? I’d really love to catch up with you”, he said. You nodded as you followed him. You talked at lot. It was easy to be with him. He was still a dork and a brat but he seemed to mature. And he was more… attractive. You blushed a couple of times as he did some comments about you. It seemed he still had some effect on you. It was something in the way he spoke that sounded familiar. Well, you knew him, of course it was familiar. But it wasn’t that. It’d been a long since you didn’t see each other but it felt as if you had talked to him not long ago.

“Do you want to have dinner?”, he asked when you realized it was already dark.

“Hmmm… Okay”, you smiled.

“Let me go to my apartment to take something first, okay?”, he said.

“Okay”, you replied.

His apartment wasn’t too big and it was messy. You sat on the couch as you waited for him as something caught your eye. There was a familiar book in the table in front of you. You laughed as you took it. You could have never imagined that you would like the same type of books. You smiled changed into shock as you opened the book. There was a phrase written on it. “Let’s be adventurers!”, you read. You already knew that phrase. You searched for the pages, looking at the comments that you already read and at your own ones. You took the book you were carrying in your bag and opened it as well. “Hey idiot, I love you”, it said. The same handwriting.

“Are you okay?”, you heard Sehun behind you.

“It was you?”, you asked as you showed him the book. He sighed as he looked at you.

“It wasn’t my intention that you find it this way. I wanted to tell you”, he said as he sat beside you. You didn’t say anything. You keep scanning the pages of the book. “Are you mad at me?”, he asked after a while. You averted your eyes from the book and looked at him.

“No, I… I don’t understand how this has happened. I thought this was by chance”, you said. It was true you weren’t mad. Hiding things wasn’t really like lying. But you were so confused.

“And it was by chance. I didn’t prepare anything, trust me”, he replied.

“But we know each other and you never told me”, you said.

“Just… let me explain”, he said.

“Okay”, you replied.

“I go to that cafe every day. I normally go there to read and have some bubble tea. One day it was raining so heavily. I ran to my car when I realized I forgot my book. I saw a petite figure going out of the hospital and got into the cafe before me. When I arrived to the cafe myself, I saw you with my book in your hands. I was going to talk to you but I don’t know… you looked so sad. I didn’t want to bother you. So I just sat there and watched you as you read the book. You began to smile and that made me feel so well. I was glad I could cheer you up at least. I went next day but you weren’t there. You weren’t there the following day. I thought maybe you just came that day or maybe it was just on Thursdays. And I was right, you were there next Thursday. I left another book for you. You looked… sad and I didn’t want to push you so I didn’t talk to you. Then that turned into a way of talking with you. I know I should have told you it was me but I was scared you would have finished it if you knew it was me. I mean, we talk more openly to strangers. Anyway, I really enjoyed our little conversations but I wanted to talk with you in person. It was really discouraging when you told me that you didn’t want to meet me…”, he said.

“I’m sorry. I really have a reason for that”, you replied.

“I know”, he smiled. “I realized you came every Thursday after you go out of the hospital. I really wanted to ask you if you were fine but it didn’t want you to feel bad so… I followed you to the hospital one day and…”, he began.

“Wait… did you see me in the hospital?”, you asked. He nodded. “Did you know that I had… ?”, you began.

 “Cancer? I know”, he said.

“And… don’t you mind? I mean… why did you keep talking to me?”, you asked.

“Why wouldn’t I have keep talking to you? Why am I going to lose the chance to know such an amazing girl?”, he smiled. You averted your eyes from him as you blushed. You didn’t know what to say or do. You were in front of the boy you had been talking to for such a long time and the one you thought you fell in love with. It wasn’t that easy to react. “Did you tell anyone? I always see you go to the hospital alone”, he said after a while.

“No, I didn’t tell anyone”, you replied.

“Why not?”, he asked.

“Because I don’t want anyone to treat me differently”, you sighed.

“Am I treating you differently?”, he smiled. You thought about it for a while.

“No, but… Well, you leave a book every week to cheer me up”, you said.

“I leave a book every week because I want to talk to you and I like you and… and I think that I love you”, he stuttered. Your eyes widened in surprise as your heart began to beat fast.

“What did you just say?”, you asked.

“I think that I fell in love with you”, he said looking into your eyes intensely.

“But boys don’t fall in love with sad girls…”, you just replied. You didn’t know what you said that, it just came out of your mouth alone. But thinking about it, it was something that you were keeping in your mind for long. You were scared of meeting people because you were sure nobody would want to be with you. Boys looked for cheerful girls.

“I guess it’s too late for that”, he smiled. “And I don’t think you’re a sad girl. What’s happening to you is what is making you feel sad. But feeling sad is different from being sad. You’re not sad, that’s not your character”, he continued. You felt tears running down your face. “Please, don’t cry”, he said as he your face, wiping your tears. “I think I maybe went too far. I didn’t want to freak you out”, he said. “I don’t want you to think I’m I stalker or something like that. I just… I want to be with you, I don’t care about anything else. Meeting you again changed my life. I never thought you could fall in love with someone just talking, without seeing each other. And I don’t want this to finish”, he said. “I love you”, he almost whispered.

You couldn’t help but smile. It was as if everything seemed clear and all your fears and doubts were disappearing. He loved you and he didn’t mind you were ill. You cupped his face with your hands and made him look at you as you laughed. He was looking at you with a mixture of confusion and amusement.

“Why are you laughing?”, he smiled. You smiled back as you pulled him closer to you; your faces at the same level.

“I feel the same”, you smiled.

“What?”, he asked confused.

“Hey idiot, I love you”, you quoted him as you crashed your lips against his.
