The Piñata

My hands shook as I carefully put the string through my contraption. Hours upon hours had gone into this and I really couldn't afford to mess up now. The party was tomorrow, after all. I was stressing so much that I barely heard my hyung speak.

"Jungkook-ah, take a deep breath. If you don't calm down, you might mess up the piñata," he spoke softly, "and I really don't want to be up much later. It's 4:00 AM."

I took a slow, deep breath. "I'm sorry, Jin hyung. Everything just needs to be perfect tomorrow. Taehyung hyung deserves it." Jin hyung smiled; the sleepy bags under his eyes pronounced. He really didn't need to stay up and help me with the piñata, but he insisted he wanted to help. Good thing, too. I'd only be halfway done if he hadn't.

Jin put his hand on my shoulder. "Don't worry, Jungkook. Even if everything isn't perfect, Taehyung will love it because you set it all up. He'll appreciate it." I felt my cheeks heat up. I really wanted to impress Taehyung hyung this time. He always takes care of me, and it was my turn to take care of him. His birthday party would be amazing.

After a few more minutes, the piñata was finished; filled with all of Taehyung hyung's favorite candies and treats. Jin hyung and I laughed, happy to finally finish our excruciatingly long project. The streamers hung on the piñata beautifully, if I do say so myself. Emerald green and black streamer fringe decorated the piñata in a delightful way. Even the string was a bright green; one of Taehyung hyung's favorite colors. All the time and effort we put into this would be worth it as I pictured Taehyung hyung's smiling face as he walks into the dorm.

Tomorrow - technically today - Yoongi hyung would take Taehyung hyung to the mall while the other hyungs and I set up the party at the dorm. Thinking ahead, we scheduled the party a week before his actually birthday so he wouldn't expect anything.

"Yah, Jungkook. Go to bed. It's been a late night, and we both need to get sleep before the party tomorrow."

I nodded in response. "Of course, hyung. And, thanks for everything."

Yoongi hyung and Taehyung hyung were out on the town before I woke up. I shifted over in my bed to look at the time: 1:29 PM. Oh my God, I slept in. Did my alarm not go off? Why wouldn't the hyungs wake me up? The party's today!! AT TWO!!! I rushed out of bed and changed out of my pajamas. Half an hour. I have half of an hour to turn the dorm into an amazing birthday party. I shimmied and jumped toward my room's door as I put on my pants. Half an hour! Please tell me the hyungs have started getting ready. I opened the door and walked to the living room. What had to be at least three hours of preparation stood in front of me. Streamers and balloons hung from the ceiling all around the room, they were green and black, and matched the piñata I had made the night before; snacks and other foods were set up on a table, featuring things like pizza, popcorn, a cotton candy machine, and a big, three story cake. The green fondant on the cake was accented with black icing. Piped on the cake were the words Happy 20th Birthday, Taehyung! I couldn't believe how beautiful everything looked. Namjoon hyung smiled at me as I gawked at the room.

"You like it? Really, the only thing we have left to do is hang the piñata." No words came as I smiled with my mouth agape.

"Jungkookie!! You're finally awake!" Jimin hyung said as he tackled me with a hug. A laugh escaped my lips as I tried to process how my hyungs even pulled this off. Hoseok hyung and Jin hyung stood in the corner of the room and smiled at me as they hung a few more balloons.

"Yeah, yeah, hyung. I'm awake. But why didn't you guys wake me up? I wanted to help set up! I planned the party, after all," I said as I pouted for effect, "and get off of me!" Jimin laughed and got up.

"Jin hyung said you had a long night making the piñata, so we figured we should let you sleep as long as you needed to," Namjoon hyung said as he pulled two candles out of his back pocket. He stuck them gently in the top of the cake. It now beared the number twenty-one.

"You would've let me sleep all day?! The party's in-" I checked my phone, "twenty-three minutes! What if I hadn't woken up before then?"

"But you did wake up!" said Hoseok hyung with that dorky smile of his. I sighed as a smile returned to my face. Everything was going better than expected, and there was nothing to stress about.

"So, we should probably hang that piñata now, Jungkook-ah," said Jin hyung with a soft smile.

"Oh, right! I can do it, hyung. It's a little heavy, but I can manage." I replied as I walked to my room where I hid the piñata. I opened the closet and gently grabbed it. Slowly, I walked back to the living room. "Um, is there a ladder or something I can use to reach the hook?" I asked. It wasn't long before the hyungs found a random stepladder for me to climb on. Very delicately, I wrapped the string around the hook and slowly lowered my hands, hoping to God that the string could support all the weight of the candy. Luckily, it did. The hyungs and I stood back a bit to see the piñata in it's full glory.

"Not bad, Jungkook. Not bad at all," said Namjoon hyung with an impressed smile on his face. My cheeks reddened again as I felt pride for what I had managed to do.

"Not a moment too soon, either!" said Hoseok as he looked at his phone and showed us the texts from Yoongi hyung, "They should be home in about ten minutes. They just left the mall."

Suddenly, I was really stressed out. Was there anything else we needed to do? Piñata's set up, cake's ready with candles and everything, balloons and streamers decorating the room, food, there was nothing else I could really think of.

"Relax, Jungkook. Everything's ready." assured Jimin hyung.

I smiled. "I hope he likes it."

The lights were turned off, and Namjoon hyung lit the candles as we waited for the Yoongi hyung and Taehyung hyung to get home. I hid behind the couch. The door to the dorm was completely in view as I sat in silence. My thoughts started racing again. How much longer? Are they almost home? Will Taehyung like everything? What if he's disappointed? My thoughts were interrupted as I heard the sound of the door unlocking.

"Why is it so dark in here?" asked Taehyung hyung. I smiled to myself as he took off his shoes and the light. The hyungs and I all jumped out.

   "Surprise, Taehyung hyung! Happy birthda-"

Just before I finished yelling surprise, I heard the bright green string of the piñata snap. It crashed to the floor, and the simple paper mache was no match for the floor. The piñata seemed to explode as it landed, and the candies went all over.

   No.

   Hours went into that piñata.

Taehyung hyung didn't even get to hit it.

An awkward silence settled among the seven of us. All the work I put into that piñata was instantly wasted.

Taehyung hyung laughed, "Guess I don't get to break it myself! The floor beat me to it. Get it? Beat? Like a piñata?" I couldn't help but giggle at his pun. He was the absolute best and knew how to make something out of a bad situation. He walked over to me, smiling. His warm arms wrapped around me in a loving hug, and I smiled. "Yoongi hyung said you planned all of this for me?"

"Well, yeah. I di-" I stopped momentarily. "Yoongi hyung told you about the party?"

Yoongi hyung rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly; clearly feeling guilty, "Oops."

Taehyung hyung laughed again and hugged me tighter. "Thank you, Kookie. It's amazing. I couldn't ask for a better early birthday." I felt my cheeks getting warm again as my face turned a bright shade of pink.

"It was really nothing, hyung. I just, I wanted your birthday to be something special." Taehyung hyung leaned over and kissed my cheek.

   "It was perfect."

Somehow, I gathered enough courage in my love drunk state to kiss his lips. Taehyung hyung was surprised at first, and I could feel his cheeks warm up. He closed his eyes and relaxed. After a few seconds, he pulled away.

"I love you so much, Jeon Jungkook." My cheeks turned red for the five hundredth time today as I tried to hold back a smile.

"I love you too, Kim Taehyung."

"Yah! You two lovebirds, cut it out. It's time to eat cake!" said Namjoon hyung. I laughed as we all gathered around the cake with Taehyung hyung at the head of the table.

Softly, we began singing Happy Birthday. I couldn't help but smile as Taehyung hyung blew out his candles. Maybe that piñata wasn't such a big deal after all.
