Of Quidditch and Boggart

Boggart Your Way Into My Heart

Baekhyun woke up with a massive headache.

He didn’t dare to move or open his eyes since he was afraid that he’ll feel nauseous. He kept lying on his back for a few minutes until it finally registered to him. He remembered, yesterday he was having a quidditch match against the Slytherin when one of the bludger hit his broomstick, resulting his broomstick broke and he fell from like 10 feet above the ground.

He remembered his red rope ruffle frantically as he fell. He was panic, yes. Moreover, people were shouting in shock as the Gryffindor chaser fell helplessly like an uncontrolled airplane. All Baekhyun could think at that moment was the story about the legend, Harry Potter, who also multiple times fell from his broomstick and that one time his hand was like completely destroyed, and Baekhyun absolutely didn’t want that to happen to him, and somehow his head ended up hitting the hard soil first.

Luckily, one of the teacher was casting a spell on him in the last seconds, so the impact of his fall wasn’t that bad. But Baekhyun still out after all, and he heard this story from Kyungsoo when the latter picked him up from the hospital wing after he woke up and took him to his room.

It seemed like Baekhyun’s injury wasn’t that serious, or maybe the medicine that Madam Ella gave him was truly strong, because Baekhyun didn’t need even a day to recover. Only a heavy headache remained right now, killing him slowly. But Baekhyun thought it was a given since he just woke up.

Grunting rather loudly, Baekhyun put his elbow firmly on his bed to support him when he brought himself up. Slowly he sat and opened his eyes, and the nausea immediately came.

“Hey, you okay there, Baekhyun?”

Baekhyun turned his head to his side. Danny, his roommate, a cute British guy, was in the middle of wearing his Gryffindor coat. He looked worried, and Baekhyun didn’t like making people worried for him.

“Yeah,” Baekhyun croaked. “I guess.”

“Dude, you fell pretty hard yesterday. You out immediately. The whole stadium was in a panic mode,” Danny approached him. He looked ready to go to class.

“Yeah,” Baekhyun repeated. Somehow, he can’t form any longer sentences. “Kyungsoo told me.”

Danny nodded, “Speaking of Kyungsoo, he came like five minutes ago, checking on you.” The English guy put his palm on Baekhyun’s shoulder. “Just rest for today, Baekhyun.”

Baekhyun smiled, “No, I can’t skip class. You know Professor Ted hate lazy students.” It was probably a bad idea to come to class. But Baekhyun had experienced the said professor’s anger once when he was absent from his class at his first year. It wasn’t a pleasant memory.

“Mr. Ted would understand. He saw you fell yesterday,” Danny tried to make him stay. But Baekhyun’s head felt a little better. He guessed he could manage.

“Don’t worry,” Baekhyun grinned. “I’m a thick headed guy.”

“What the hell? Are you crazy?”

Baekhyun tried to put on his most sheepish smile for his best friend. Kyungsoo was looking at him with his wide eyes. His whole face screamed horror that Baekhyun was actually afraid, thinking that he should probably pull out his wand, just in case.

“I’m feeling better, Kyungsoo,” Baekhyun said when he took a seat beside him.

“I already told him to not come to class, Soo. But he was stubborn,” Danny chuckled, also taking his seat behind the two smaller boys.

Kyungsoo massaged his temple. He looked genuinely stressed out seeing his best friend there. Baekhyun was so touched.

“Maybe I should just blow up your head.”

Or maybe not.

Baekhyun forced out an awkward laugh, scared that Kyungsoo will blow his head for real. His best friend was violent like that. “I’m sorry, Kyungsoo. But I can’t skip class. You know how Prof—“

“Oh, look who we have here?”

Baekhyun clasped his lips immediately. He gritted his teeth and tried hard to control his rage. He turned his head around and found his mortal enemy, the Slytherin devil Park Chanyeol, stood in the entrance of the class, with his two minions, Jongdae and Owen, on his tail.

Baekhyun sighed heavily. He wasn’t in the mood to have a fight session with the tall dickhead. His head was throbbing like crazy, and he didn’t need any additional s.

“Can you just stop for a day, Chanyeol?” Baekhyun said back with a soft tone. He really didn’t want to argue with him today. “Just for today, okay?”

Baekhyun looked up at Chanyeol with a pleading eyes. This would be the only time he called a truce between them. He didn’t care what Chanyeol would think of him being a lame kid like this. He just wanted some peace for today.

However, Baekhyun saw the change of Chanyeol’s eyes and expression for a split second, before it turned to his usual annoying face.

Still grinning like an idiot, Chanyeol walked to his seat beside Baekhyun’s row and took his seat. “Maybe you should just go back to your princess room and get some sleep instead of coming here and begging for my mercy to not bully you.”

Baekhyun rolled his eyes. If Baekhyun didn’t know Chanyeol better, he would thought that Chanyeol’s words would mean that he cared of him. But no, Chanyeol would never did.

Everyone in Hogwarts knew Baekhyun and Chanyeol hated each other, though no one remembered or knew how it started. The two idiots themselves also didn’t remember why they were enemies. They were enemies as long as they could remember. So it was impossible for Chanyeol being worried about him. There was a 0% chance for that to happen.

“I’m not a lazy- like you, Chanyeol,” Baekhyun finally managed to refute. “I need to keep my straight As grade.”

Chanyeol whistled, and his other friends was giggling beside him. “Oh yeah, I just remember you were the perfect Byun Baekhyun. A straight A student and quidditch captain,” Chanyeol said, and Baekhyun once again saw that glimpse change of expression on the taller’s face. “But what’s the point of you coming to class to get an A while you could collapse anytime, huh?”

This time, Baekhyun swore he hear a worried tone from him, and it did funny thing to Baekhyun’s stomach. Chanyeol wasn’t supposed to give him a friendly advice, and Baekhyun wasn’t supposed to feel butterfly in his stomach, dammit.

Baekhyun cleared his throat and turned around, facing the front of the class, trying to ignore the blabbering Slytherin behind him.

“I’m saying this because when you fell and out yesterday, you looked really pitiful and kinda looked like an idiot. You want that to happen again?” Chanyeol shouted from the back of the class, drawing attention from other Gryffindor and Slytherin students.

Baekhyun cursed under his breath. Why Gryffindor and Slytherin had to have the same schedule for the Defence against the Dark Arts class.

His headache which had gotten better this morning turned heavy again all of a sudden. “,” Baekhyun rumbled as he put his head on both of his palms. Maybe all of his friend, and also Chanyeol, were right. He was stupid for coming to class today.

“You okay, Baek?” Kyungsoo asked him with a low voice, trying not to add Baekhyun’s apparent headache. “Maybe you should go back to your room. Everyone can see that you’re suffering. And the weirdest part is that now Chanyeol was looking at you with the most worried expression out of all of us here.”

Baekhyun grunted, still wasn’t able to lift his head despite he really wanted to check if Kyungsoo had told him the truth or not.

Baekhyun was at the edge of giving up when he heard Professor Ted’s voice entering the class. “Good morning, everyone.”

And all Baekhyun’s will to go back to dorm was amiss. He just had to his headache up for the whole two hours now. Hopefully without him fainting or screaming in pain.

Baekhyun half hoped his teacher would notice him and ask if Baekhyun was okay, and he would gladly answer with ‘No, I need to go back to my room’ and Mr. Ted would allow him to go. But the Dark Arts teacher didn’t even spare him a glance. His effort to come to the class had gone down the drain.

“So, today we’re going to do something fun!” Professor Ted was a too cheerful dark magic teacher. Baekhyun didn’t really like his delightful attitude. “I’m sure by now all of you what a boggart is. A boggart is an amortal shape-shifting non-being that takes on the form of viewer’s most fear. It means, today we’re going to try a really great spell. Which is…?”

Baekhyun still had not lifted his head, so he muttered under his breath softly, Riddikulus. Then he heard some girl in the class said it out loud.

Well, at least he got something from the class today. That spell was fascinating from what Baekhyun had heard and read. So he was looking forward to it.

It was minutes later, after Mr. Ted told them the most essential thing about boggart and the riddikulus spell, that the teacher asked all of them to stand up and gather in front of the cupboard with a boggart inside it.

Baekhyun forcefully dragged his feet along with his other friends. His headache wasn’t too severe anymore like before. Maybe Baekhyun just had to be not associated with Chanyeol for a while.

But Baekhyun could feel Chanyeol’s presence right behind him. It was so unusual for the taller boy to stand close to him, and Baekhyun thought he was awfully close. Baekhyun didn’t mind, really, as long as Chanyeol didn’t do something stupid to him. But it was just weird how the Slytherin’s presence gave him so much comfort, especially when he was in his most terrible state right now

Baekhyun watched some of his friends trying to go up against the boggart. Some of them did it successfully and some of them failed miserably. Baekhyun wondered what would be his biggest fear. Honestly Baekhyun didn’t know. Probably cucumber-shaped monster? Baekhyun chuckled at his own silly thought until he didn’t realize the tall boy behind him was being called.

Kyungsoo nudged him from the side, pointing his chin to the front so Baekhyun could pay his attention. Chanyeol was pulling out his wand from inside his coat. He looked hesitant, and if Baekhyun squinted, he could tell that Chanyeol was afraid.

Baekhyun grinned. So Chanyeol could have something he was afraid of too. Finally, something fun was going on.

“Are you ready, Chanyeol?” Professor Ted asked him, still with his large smile.

Baekhyun could see Chanyeol was gulping hard. Watching him made Baekhyun suddenly feel anxious. What could be Chanyeol’s deepest fear out of anything in this world? What could make someone like Park Chanyeol scared for his life? Without him realizing, Baekhyun already moved to front of the crowd, wanting to witness it clearly.

Baekhyun could feel his palm got wet by the sudden nervousness, and Mr. Ted was counting down, “1… 2… 3!”

The cupboard’s door was opened and the floating thing came out of it and took place right before Chanyeol, before it finally started to make some form. Baekhyun’s heart was beating so loud that he could almost forget his headache.

It was only a mile second before the boggart took his form, and Baekhyun’s breath stopped and he practically heard all the students in the class gasped.

It was Baekhyun.

Chanyeol’s boggart was Baekhyun, with a pale face, blood coming out from his mouth and other part of his body, his clothes was also filled with splotch of blood here and there. This version of Baekhyun was dying, struggling to take his last breath.

Chanyeol’s biggest fear was Baekhyun’s dying.

“No…” Baekhyun heard Chanyeol grimaced with his most broken voice, laced with utter morose. “No, Baekhyun, no.”

Baekhyun’s breath hitched when his vision fell on Chanyeol’s face. He never saw Chanyeol—he never saw anyone—look that broken hearted. His eyes hollow, yet filled with horror. And his posture, it was like he could fall on his knees any moment. He looked like he was hypnotized by the boggart—by the dying Baekhyun in front of him.

“Chanyeol, the spell!” Mr. Ted shouted from the side.

But Chanyeol seemed didn’t hear it. His legs were giving out on him and his hands were lying lifelessly beside him. His body was shutting down.

It was all happened so fast. Baekhyun could feel his legs moved on, stepping forward, walking toward Chanyeol, shielding his enemy from his own dying version.

Baekhyun turned his head around to look at Chanyeol who was looking up at him with his round eyes. “I’m okay, Chanyeol. Don’t be afraid,” Baekhyun smiled at him before he turned to the boggart once more, and said the spell, “Riddikulus!

And suddenly the whole room was lightened up by the light coming out of Baekhyun’s wand. It was so bright until all of them needed to close their eyes. And Baekhyun was the only who saw that the dying version of him turned into another familiar form. It turned into Chanyeol, with a really bright smile of his.

And as soon as like it started turn bright so quickly, it ended with darkness immediately when the light from Baekhyun’s wand died down. And the tranforming boggart in the form of Chanyeol was finally up into the cupboard, gone inside it.

It was probably because his severe headache, or maybe because he put too much strength into his spell. But Baekhyun found his body finally gave up and he felt his body collapse onto the ground.

Though he could feel someone caught his body before his head hit the ground for the second time in a span of twenty four hours.

~

“Call me if he wake up, okay?”

“Will do. Thank you so much, Madam Ella.”

“Stop worrying too much, Chanyeol. He’s fine.”

“Yeah, alright.”

Baekhyun could hear voices in his sleep. His head was throbbing terribly again like this morning, and Baekhyun didn’t want to wake up. But the tight hold on his right palm slowly drew him closer into consciousness. The hold was firm, yet gentle. Baekhyun wasn’t familiar with the hand holding him, but he had a feeling that he knew whose hand it belonged to.

He can’t help to open his eyes, wanting to make sure his speculation.

Fluttered his eyes open this time was surely a harder task than before. He felt nauseous again and he almost got up and threw up right away before he felt the hold on his hand was getting tighter.

“Baekhyun? Hey, you’re awake?”

His nausea was gone in a second. When he opened his eyes completely, Baekhyun saw Chanyeol rise up from his seat beside Baekhyun’s hospital bed. His stomach was playing trick on him again as he saw Chanyeol’s worried expression.

“Chanyeol,” Baekhyun could only say his name weakly.

“I’ll go get Madam Ella,” Chanyeol wanted to turn around and left, but Baekhyun held his hand back.

“No,” his voice croaked. He tried to get up, once again putting all his strength to his elbow for supporting. “Stay here. With me.”

Chanyeol’s eyes looked confused, distracted. It was like he was torn between wanting to stay with Baekhyun and wanting to get the nurse so she could examine Baekhyun further and make him better.

“I’m fine, so just—“ Baekhyun finally sat up, leaning his back to the board of the bed. “Just stay here, okay? I fainted because I helped you, so the least you could do is accompany me here.”

“No,” Chanyeol growled. His eyes was now turned into an anger ones. “You fainted because your ing headache. What did I say before? I warned you to go back to your room and get some rest.”

Baekhyun’s stomach churned. Chanyeol needed to stop doing that. He sounded so frustrated, so worried, until Baekhyun felt like melting in his frantic gaze.

Chanyeol took his seat again, slumping on the chair very hard as he ran his head through his black smooth hair. “But yeah, you did help me. Thank you for that.”

Both of them fell silent. Baekhyun didn’t feel his goddamn headache again this time. All he could feel was his crazy heartbeat in his chest. Remembering the event earlier, Baekhyun couldn’t help but blush like hell.

Chanyeol’s boggart was Baekhyun in the verge of dying. Did it mean Chanyeol was so afraid of Baekhyun being dead or something? Baekhyun had no idea.

Meanwhile, Chanyeol seemed like he couldn’t draw his vision away from his hand intertwining with Baekhyun’s. He had realized that they had not released each other’s hold for a while now, but he just didn’t want to let go. He was tired from the previous accident, and the hold from Baekhyun’s hand gave his energy back.

“Your boggart was me,” Baekhyun started. He tried to sound steady, not like a squealing annoying little muggle girl. “What does it mean, Chanyeol?”

A thousand of emotion ran through Chanyeol’s expression right after Baekhyun threw the question. He contemplated of what he should say and how he could explain it, but it was hard to utter something—the feeling—he had buried deep inside his heart after all this time.

“I thought you hate me, Chanyeol,” Baekhyun said weakly.

“I did,” Chanyeol answered back immediately. His eyes now bored into Baekhyun’s. “I hate you so much, and I hate you even more since yesterday, because you just can’t take care of yourself.”

Baekhyun bit his lower lips, and he balled his other palm that wasn’t held by Chanyeol. He tried so hard to contain himself.

“And Baekhyun, I hate you so much because since yesterday, you became my deepest fear,” Chanyeol continued, his breath ragged. “I fear you being hurt, I fear you being in the danger state, I fear you being gone, I fear you not being exist in my world, and I fear of losing you.”

Baekhyun thought maybe it was the effect of the medicine that he was brave enough to pull Chanyeol’s green coat closer to him. And it must be his stupid heart which got the gut to plant his lips on Chanyeol’s. And it was perfect and making him drunk. Chanyeol deepened the kiss and Baekhyun lost himself.

It was just registered to him that he never really hated Chanyeol all this time. Baekhyun enjoyed Chanyeol’s jokes, insults, and company. He was someone who Baekhyun feared too. He feared of Chanyeol not being in his world too.

He was breathless when Chanyeol ended their kiss. His lips immediately grew cold at the absence of Chanyeol’s lips and his headache suddenly came back.

“I saw your riddikulus spell,” Chanyeol said as he drew himself closer to Baekhyun. “It was me, wasn’t it? So the funniest thing in the world for you is me?”

Baekhyun laughed. He never knew it could bring him so much happiness to be able to stay close with his mortal enemy. “You know, that spell is not always about funny memory. It could be a happy memory too.”

Baekhyun wanted to capture the way Chanyeol looked at him at this moment. He wanted to engrave it in his memory. Because Baekhyun never saw someone look at him the way Chanyeol looked at him right now. His eyes filled with so much love and enormous. Or did Chanyeol always looked at him like this and Baekhyun never noticed?

“You should quit quidditch,” Chanyeol deadpanned, his face was now serious.

Baekhyun’s eyes widened, “Sorry, I should what?”

“Give me a break, Baekhyun,” the Slytherin boy’s expression was pained. “I almost died when I saw you fall from the sky and hit the ground. I spent all day accompany you here yesterday. I thought it was the end of me before you finally woke up and Kyungsoo took you to your room,” Chanyeol was frantically yelling at this point. “I don’t want my boyfriend to die because of a stupid tournament. I’ve experienced how it was to have you dying in front of me because of that damn boggart. So, Baekhyun, please have mercy on me and quit quidditch.”

Baekhyun felt a tad bad for the Slytherin boy because he seemed really tired, but he couldn’t help but smile, a -eating smile that Chanyeol hated. It was all worth it, Baekhyun guessed. All the pain he went through because of the fall was paid off for having Chanyeol beside him like this, worried sick. And he magically had a boyfriend, his former enemy. That was most wonderful thing a boggart could do in the history of Hogwarts.

“Maybe I should never quit quidditch so I could have you cutely worry over me like this every time I fly above the field,” Baekhyun put his face closer to Chanyeol again. “I would fall from my broomstick since the beginning of the year if it meant I could have you quicker.”

Chanyeol grumbled, but his face wasn’t as serious as before. He put a wide smile on his face before he pulled Baekhyun for a kiss once more, his lips were urgent against Baekhyun’s and Baekhyun lost his balance.

When Chanyeol put a distance between their faces, he held Baekhyun tight against him. “Listen, I admit that I like you, I may even love you. But your jokes aren’t as funny as when we were enemies,” Chanyeol gave Baekhyun’s little button nose a nudge with his finger. “Don’t give me heart attack. Don’t you dare falling again. Ever.”

Baekhyun grinned. This was like the most eventful, beautiful, and riddikulus 24 hours of his life. He got a severe headache but he also got a hot and handsome and protective Slytherin boyfriend. So everything was fine and well.

“What if I’m falling for you?”
