Sweet and Innocent?

Kanata grew up with one motto: Always do right. His parents had told him to do that ever since he was young, and he always followed that motto. Still, for some reason everyone was scared of him. He would go to help someone, or try to be their friend, and they avoided him. They wouldn't allow him to help them when they needed it. When he was old enough, he decided it would be better for everyone if he left his town and set out to make the world a better place. So he started to travel, all around the country. And he did good. He spent days researching horrible crimes, tracking down the assailant, and making sure they were locked up for good. On his off days, he walked around whatever town he was in, helping anyone who looked like they needed the assistance. It was a good life. Except not everything was perfect for him. He would go to sleep at night and wake up in a completely different place, sometimes with blood on his clothings or grave injuries. Someone he had saved just the day before would get frightened expressions on their face, they'd run, or even scream. It leaves Kanata in a constant state of confusion and sorrow. Completely alone in the world, except for his familiar Minto. Yet he still wants to do good, he still wants to help others.

Or The Devil Reincarnated?

Kanata sort of has a secret. Whenever he falls asleep, he changes. He closes his eyes and wakes up as another person. This other person is someone on a different side altogether. He's malicious and will kill anyone who gets in his way. In fact, he considers himself for hire. If you offer some sort of pay, he will kill whoever you want. Actually, he'll kill whoever you want for free, if you really wanted him to, but he isn't stupid, he likes to get something in return. He can't remember much of his childhood, this side of Kanata. The soonest he could probably remember was when he was six years old when he killed the next door neighbors dog. He didn't give a for anyone. Not his mother (who was very scared of him) or his father, who eventually left because of him. One day, he woke up, and found himself in a completely different place. That didn't stop him. That only caused him to set up his own black marketed company.

The Pain and Conflict of Being Two in One

Sometimes Kanata feels terribly lonely, which is a horrible price to pay for what he tries to do in life. He wanders from place to place, sad and alone. He doesn't have any friends, and he's never had a lover, and while he knows he doesn't need such a thing, he wonders. He sees couples holding hands, or kissing, and can't help but think, What is so special about being in a relationship? Sometimes he's afraid he'll never know.
Sometimes Kanata wakes up in pain. Horrible, utter pain. He'll find himself beaten, bloodied, and hurt beyond recognition, and he won't know how it happened. The only word he has to go on is Minto's and sometimes he wonders if she isn't quite telling him the truth all the time. After all, how many times is he going to 'Sleep walk' and hurt himself before she finds a way to stop him.
The other Kanata doesn't have it as badly when he wakes up, but he's constantly sick of people stopping him down the street, thanking him for one thing or another, and it drives him insane.
But neither must find out about the other.
If they find out about each other, an inner struggle will fall over them, and one may not survive. Or neither of them will.

One True Friend

Minto is Kanata's familiar. She is the only one who has stuck through his split personalities, throughout his life. She puts up with both of them. When she was still alive, his grandmother gave Minto one task. Keep Kanata alive. Sometimes she has difficulty doing that, and she can quite often be seen as rude and y, but she does her job and she does it well.
