In my opinion, angst is really sad and depressing, but what characterizes it is the fact that the main character is kind of hung over on their depressed feelings. They continually talk and think about it, realizing how miserable they are, etc.
It's not violent, but it's like a calm type of misery. For example, the person might be drinking their miseries away, thinking about what they did wrong and what could've been.
