I'm sort of with Deer-and-Bread here, except that I don't have *such* negative feelings about discovery of power stories. But really, unless you're actually interested in writing the story of how they discover their powers, learn to use them, etc., you're better off just starting with them having the powers, knowing how to use them, etc. If you tell the discovery of powers, that leads into a very particular type of story after, which may or may not be the story you're interested in writing.

I honestly hate it when a character is "normal" and then discovers their powers because that's just such a special snowflake cliche...?
