You just did not want to make a choice, not back then- and still not now. You weren't sure, it was worse than a nightmare- trauma?
Perhaps you just needed closure. Is it possible to have it from someone else? Unfortunately it is not that easy to stand up for your name but people are so easy to fool. 

You had to believe that friends and family were enough, but apparently not all the time.
