Screams.

The bloody mangled cries of mercy that left out the mouths of men, women, children, as each and every one of them fell down one by one into a lifeless pile.

“Please, no!”

A women passed by me, and I watched through the crack of the wooden pile I hid behind as the blood splattered from her back as the metal blade slashed into her.

And I watched. The body of a trembling eight year old boy who is left to watch as his village gets torn apart by the hands of some unknown men. The screams, cries, sounds of clashing metal echoed as a blaze set forth to every house and building of my village.

Why?

Why are they doing this?

I could feel the tears pooling around my eyes and falling down my dirtied and scratched cheek. I hiccuped, immediately covering my mouth when I realized the sound I just made.

The man turned his head and my breath hitched in fear that I have been found. He had a scar that ran over his right eye, a marking that ran down the back of his neck but was covered by the scarf with a weird pattern he wore around his mouth.

I don’t want to die.

I’m not ready to die.

The man stepped away from the body and took a step towards my location.

Mama.

Papa.

God.

Hyung.

I pleaded to somebody, anybody to make the man go away. To not let me be found. I couldn’t take my eyes of his advancing figure as the flames blackened his figure. Someone must have heard my plea because the man stopped, turning his attention towards the shouts coming from the left of us and his feet quickly moved towards whatever was the source.

I let out a choked sobbed. crying from the fright and possible fate that could have happened to me.

I was lucky.

That’s what I would like to think right now.

But as I watched the remains of my village, my home, my family, my friends, all burn before me under the moonlit night sky that day... I wonder now was I actually that lucky.

I brought my body to move away from the destructed village, turning to the woods to walk until I found the nearest village. In my hand the clutched a bow tight, holding back the tears that threatened to fall but it was already too late to stop them.

But I made a vow that night.

I vow that I will get revenge.

I will get justice.

I will set flames to those who did this just as they did to us.

My people will be forever gone, but as long as I am alive I will make sure they- whoever they are- they will remember our name.

My name.

And let that name be the last name they plead to for mercy before I bring their fate to them.

My name is Do Kyungsoo, and I will avenge my people.
