So please take the time to read it all, I will really appreciate it. For all you Hobies out there, keep hope in your heart and don’t concentrate only on the negatives of the music video and song. I know J-Hope definitely wouldn’t!!! Also, if I incorporate any quotes, they will be in English from the subtitles provided by the video, so I will analysis according to the translation I’m given, so sorry in advance if there are any mistakes as I can’t translate Korean because I can’t speak it, hence I have to rely on what I have. Also, I will add number in brackets like this (2:53) which corresponds to what part of the video I'm talking about so that you readers can refer to it. Btw, this is only my personal interpretation and I really hope all you readers enjoy reading this.  Oxoxoxooxoxxo

Right, of to the analysis then........

Introduction: If we generalise the song and video, we find that it is mainly about a young man losing his lost love and the pain he feels after it which lead to further consequences. This is also stated by BTS themselves. But if we track the video as we go along, it can be interpreted in many ways and we can create our own little story through what we see and what we hear. Generally, the story after the break up is that the young man is in complete agony; he wants to break free as he knows that the girl does not care,  so there’s no benefit from feeling like this. Yet at first he feels trapped in this abyss of pain as Rap Monster says at (2:24) “it is my heart, mind, emotion, but don’t listen to my words” , but soon he gains the strength to slowly let go and reach his ultimate goal of happiness and freedom. This is demonstrated in throughout the video very clearly.  The sad parts of the video reflect their grief (obviously) and the happy parts reflect how they are happy and gained freedom.

1) At the beginning, Jin is sat in a white room where everything including his clothing is white. However, he holds the flower in his hand (a flower which represents suffocation in Korea). This indicates how despite being in a white room where there should be hope, Jin is choosing to suffocate himself as he continues to hold the flower because he is in pain after loosing the girl. While J-Hope observes himself in the mirror as the girl made him feel worthless about his looks. So he becomes very self conscious.  On the other hand, we have Jungook who’s roaming around in a lonesome place as his life has become empty. At (0:24) Jungook waves his arm in the air yet catches nothing but the empty atmosphere showing how he’s trying to chase up to the girl again yet she is not there for him. And of course V’s situation is very obvious; he’s a lonesome boy who is attempting to numb the pain using alcohol as you can see beer bottles at his side. Yet when he looks into the camera at (0:33), you can clearly see that the pain remains. And our poor Suga, he turns his head and feels with his arms that the space on his bed is empty as the girl is gone. As he makes that physical gesture, it makes his pain all the more realistic and shakes his heart. If you zoom into the wall of Suga’s room, where the ripped wall paper is at (0:37), it says “we are travelling.....read more.....show less”. Since this is written under the torn wall paper, it shows how despite the girl leaving him, he still carries on with his dreams and aspirations which he wanted to do with her. The “we are travelling” part clearly shows how a second person pronoun is used which means these future plans are made for two people. We = Suga and the girl. Despite the break up, he still sees this as a journey, yet he knows its ended so that’s why he acknowledges her disappearance by feeling the bed using his arm and the “read more...show less” part is written underneath the “we are travelling part”. After understanding that she has left, Suga believes that escaping into books to “read more” will help him deal with the agony and “show less” of the effects on him due to the girl leaving. Then there’s Rap Monster who’s working at the petrol station, engaging himself in work to distract him. He happens to be eating a lollipop which represents his childlike situation. When a child is in pain and sorrow, they become vulnerable and helpless; they don’t know what to do or how to solve it. They only know that they want to escape the pain. This is Rap Monsters intellect, he’s stuck with the pain. This further relates to later in the music video at (2:50 – 2:56) where the car leaves him yet the lollipop remains in his mouth. This symbolises how the girl left him yet he still has the lollipop in his mouth which leaves him glued to her. The lollipop also represents youth which is the concept of the album. After Rap Monster, we have Jimin sitting in the bath tub deciding weather he’s there to soothe himself or kill himself (as he attempts to drown later on in the video). He appears to be burning a note, which could be anything really, a suicide note or a sorry note. Either way, it represents his rebellion against the girl, he refuses to say sorry to her as it was her that made the mistakes and he refuses to punish himself through suicide. The pieces then fall like flower petals, showing a fresh start, yet the petals are like those of the suffocating flower that Jin was holding. The new start without the girl who betrayed him should have been refreshing, yet instead it is suffocating. Also, it matches with the beginning of the song “fall, fall, scattering”.

 2) When the song officially begins at (1:00), all the BTS members realise the essence of the girl leaving, and they realise that they need to release this sorrow in order to attain peace. They know that they choose to suffocate and hurt themselves but know that this is an illogical path to take. Hence, they begin to find a way to get away from the pain. Unfortunately, at times it seems like self torture. But eventually they break free from this dreadful circle of anguish. At (1:08) Jungook lets out a tear, at (1:10) Jimin opens the tap to release a gush of water to fill the bath – representing his sorrow and tears.  At (1:13) Jimin looks up into the distance as if commemorating the suffering. His face says it all and no words are said as he cant explain the pain. The audience is forced to watch as the bath fills with sorrow. Then Suga does his part, and then its J-Hope with the tablets. All of this is within the first verse, the agony is released slowly at first then the effects seem to increase more and more. It’s an ongoing cycle of torture release. Suga begins the rapping, as he’s sat on a bed, you can see opposite him through the window that he’s staying at a Motel. Motels usually tend to be one-night stand areas and last minute prepared places to stay the night – this shows how the girl saw Suga as a temporary partner and used him. Yet he stays behind in the Motel and just carries on sitting there, he fidgets with his lighter and seems agitated. This suggests that despite the girl leaving him, he remains behind as if he’s waiting for her even though he now knows she will never turn back; at (1:20) even Suga decides that he doesn’t want her anymore “I don’t want you anymore”. The fire from the lighter switches on and off, just like their relationship; Suga is dissatisfied with this so he keeps trying to turn the lighter back on. Due to the dissatisfaction, he later in the video lights the room on fire so that he can feel that love and emotion come back to him at (4:56) as he feels the need to supply himself with happiness as he knows the girl is untrustworthy as he says “your destroying me....I can’t do it anymore, it feels like ” etc (you already know the song). Furthermore, in Suga’s room, the TV doesn’t work and is fuzzy with black and white. This shows how he can’t watch the TV, so it feels as if nobody cares about his situation, yet realistically, its just the connection that doesn’t work which he refuses to fix. This signifies how people do care about him but because he does not communicate with them, and that is why this misconception remains with him that he is alone.  Then at (1:26) we have j-Hope at the cabinet in the bathroom. As he opens the cabinet, there appears to be a note inside stuck with cell tape – here he could have written a note to himself to stop taking the drugs as he knows it is wrong. The note to himself half sinks in to his mind. So he carries on having the tablets to reduce the anguish he feels while knowing it is wrong, his body refuses it hence his hands quiver at (1:31) where some tablets fall in the sink. J-Hope knows it is the wrong thing to do by consuming these tablets, so he has some and throws some as he is stuck on the borderline of what to do. At this point, J-Hope couldn’t fight all the tablets away, so he commits a similar act later on at (4:51) where he throws all the tablets in the fire because, after letting out all his sorrow, he is happy and no longer needs the girl. Throwing the drugs/tablets is his form of rebellion. At (1:30) J-Hope says “every word from you is an eye patch”. The present tense shows that J-Hope knows the girl always was a liar, she still is and always will be. Also, it shows how she made him blind thinking that she actually loved him when she didn’t.

3) After the first verse we have the bridge. At (1:43) Jin places the suffocation flower  petals on the floor slowly as if he is scared of it. These are the petals and not the full flower; the flower attempted to suffocate him to death yet he tore it apart as he doesn’t want to die. As he leaves it on the floor, he’s clearly revealing that he is letting go of the suffocation and refusing to let it happen to him. By putting it on the floor, it signifies how he believes that this pain is inferior to him and getting away from this torment makes him more superior as he is brave. Since he is fearful of the flower, it makes him brave to reject it. Before putting the flower down, he carries on holding it, his singing lines are “because you’re my everything”, hence it was painful to let go of the girl suffocating him despite it being harmful. Yet after putting it down, V says “please get out of here” which is when Jin finally dismisses her cruelty. Later on, we have V at (1:44) where he puts his hood up to hide his despair. He sings “I’m sorry...I love you...forgive me” while in the background, “I hate you” is repeated constantly. One interpretation would be that V is confessing his love and blaming himself for loosing her while the background chant is his conscience telling him that he should hate her because it was her fault and not his. Alternatively, V could also be apologising to himself for loving the wrong person e.g. “I’m sorry that I love you” to the girl and “forgive me” to himself while the background chant is the conscience telling V that he hates V for making the silly mistake of loving such a girl and hating the girl for doing such things to V. During this, he walks away from the alcohol, again a rebellious act. V will no longer use this alcohol as he realises that he shouldn’t feel pain over this lousy girl. From (1:47) onwards, we can see that Vs top says “ONLY DIVISION” in block capitals. (In the video, I can only see “ly, division” but I’m assuming it says “only division”). This indicates that only division from the girl is the answer to restore V’s peace. Importantly, the fact that he’s wearing this on a T-shirt exemplifies his belief on this as he wears it and shows it off. After the bridge, the song dips into the chorus where “I need you girl” is repeated again and again. Other than Jungook feeling slightly disorientated and hurt, through most of the chorus, we see most of BTS having fun and being happy together. This demonstrates how their rebellions against the girl and the distress caused by her are slowly vanishing and happiness is coming back to them. Despite repeating the words “I need you girl”, BTS’s actions totally contradict their words as it is clear that they don’t need the girl. It is almost as if they mock the girl and their old-selves for wanting to be with her. Towards the end of the chorus at (2:08), we feel a sudden anger rising as two men begin to hit Jungook as they attempt to strangle him. Yet he fights back with power, an we see a close up of Jungook’s eye at (2:12) where his eyes are now dry and the tears have disappeared. His rebellion is a success as he now feels anger instead of trauma. At (2:13) the camera is focused on the fire petals which are on fire. Again, their is evidence of the success of the rebellion. The suffocation is being burnt to ashes. Straight after this, BTS are running happily through a tunnel as they’re relishing their freedom. However, it is a tunnel, they are still trapped but are finding their way out as we see  at (2:21) that Jin is in the foetus position which indicates that this is the early stages of the rebellion and there is more happiness to come when they reach the light at the end of the tunnel.

4) In a previous paragraph, I have already written about Rap Monster’s situation (about the significance of the lollipop and the car) but I will add some more.  In Rap Monster’s lines, it appears to be that he is rapping and talking to himself rather than to the girl which is very ironic. Rap Monster says “It goes round and round, why do I keep coming back?”. During this line he carries on with his working routine of filling cars with petrol, a routine is repetitive, and he also acknowledges his own repetitive feelings as he keeps craving for the girl despite knowing she is evil. He asks himself the rhetorical question as he knows the answer and the solution to end his torment “why do I keep coming back?”. Also, usually, rhetorical questions are told to children to make them understand the consequences of their actions, hence, Rap Monster patronises himself to make his own conscience understand the situation. “I’m fool enough now” indicating that he knows his foolishness yet he chose to let himself get hurt.  Fortunately, we then see a spark of light at (2:44) when V and Rap Monster lay on the floor together discussing their secrets. Moreover, Rap Monster says “I murmur again” which displays how he is going mad -  how he has to patronise himself and make himself understand as it feels as if no one else will help him -  at this point he realises how he’s always talking to himself to console himself. Then he says “You don’t say anything, I will do good for you please”. Here he’s telling himself to stop talking to himself like a madman and that if he does the actions of staying away from the girl, he will be doing good for himself. He even pleads to himself as he says “please”.  After this he says  “the sky is so blue again” which shoes how he strongly believes that if he just listens to his own advice and stays away from the girl, then everything will be perfect again like a clear blue sky again. Again the “it goes round and round” part links back to “the sky is so blue again” which represents how the anguish comes and goes “again” as “blue” also represents sadness.  At (2:57) Jin sings “the sky is so blue, the sun is so bright” which symbolises the upcoming peace, however, at J-Hope’s current situation, this happy connotation is twisted to describe “so that you can see my tears so clear” which shows that J-Hope thought the girl would make him happy, however, she filled him with “tears” instead. At (3:05) while Jin sings “why do I love you why do I love you?”,  V smashes a Red Bull can off the wall using a stick.  Red Bull is an energy drink; by smashing away an energy drink, it shows how the girl smashed away all joy of their lives and the energy and excitement. It also suggests that BTS have lost all energy to deal with the girl’s affects on them, and that is why they want to break free. Hence J-Hope rhetorically questions himself as to why he ever loved her. He sings “why can’t I leave you?”, and he hates this attachment to her,  so when V hit the energy drink, it was his rebellion of trying to smash away her memories as she was only some “energy” for the time and that spark of energy which came from her has now very quickly drained out just like the affects of an energy drink. V then spits at (3:07) to show his lack of care for the girl. After this, once again the chorus kicks in.

5) From the chorus onwards, we begin to see the release of despair reaching its peak and it becomes very intense with all of BTS. This becomes the final stage of suffering which is very very important.  Through this, we also see the girl threatening to come back with more torment for BTS. Consequently, we see Jungkook being beaten so ruthlessly by two men for a silly reason merely because they banged into him and he didn’t apologise despite it not being his fault. It hurts the audience just as much as it hurts him. He rebels by trying to fight back, yet the nostalgia from the girl threatens to reappear as he looses the fight against two. At (3:21) J-Hope collapses on the motorway. Then at (3:32) one drop of water falls from Jimin’s bathtub tap, then suddenly, the next second, the bathtub is over flowing and Jimin is sat outside it on the floor. This demonstrates how the distress and rebellion began as something small which soon turns into something bigger. Jimin has too many tears that he feels he can no longer carry on, so he sits outside the bathtub to escape the tears, yet the water from the bath which is tears, splashes back on him recollecting the bitterness.  Then Jin begins to sing “girl please rather say me goodbye” which indicates how he knows that she threatens to return with more trauma; therefore Jin is pleading her to leave and let him reach his bliss. In order to forget this horrible memory, he asks the girl for help “girl please tell me it was not love”. BTS are in such depression that they feel the cycle is inevitable, hence, they even ask the girl for help to be set free and alive. At (3:41) the flower of suffocation comes back to Jin as a hologram onto his heart. Jin had got rid of the flower, and now it comes back from the dead to haunt him and kill him. The girl is trying to recapture his heart with love, however, this time BTS are fully aware of her inner thoughts. Hence, they carry on pleading her to leave and to let them be content. At (3:44) Jimin stares ahead waiting for her answer. V sings “I do not have the courage” as he feels like he cannot carry on with her fake love or the pain that she caused. “Please give me the last present” where he asks her to leave and where he asks for her....death. And he never wants to go back to  her “let me not go back ever”. Additionally, during this at (3:47) V witnesses a man abusing the women and immediately understands how very wrong that is. Hence he dives in to save her as he feels the recognition of the situation because he was also abused. When he saves the girl, it means that he is also rescuing himself. In this scene, the girl in the corner is representing BTS and the abusive man is the girl that BTS loved. He uses an alcohol bottle to attack him, the same thing he drank from to numb the pain. The alcohol is the poison which was intoxicating his mind and his heart, hence he now uses this same poison to kill the man and the girl whom he once loved. From (3:52 – 4:00) we see the action where V attacks the man and takes his first hit, and Jungkook almost gets run over by a car. Notice that he almost gets run over, and doesn’t actually get run over; the car stops in time. When V hit the man, it’s as if the man took the pain and death for him, that’s why Jungkook remained alive: the girl died, hence BTS are left alive as she took away their deaths.

6) Suddenly, the music stops then begins again but returns as softer which indicates that BTS have finally released the main part of their grief. Now, they must get used to their new lives and shed any tears remaining. At (4:05) Jimin is back in the bathtub again – this indicates that the tears are longer too much to sit outside the tub. Also, the fact that he is drowning himself symbolises the suicidal emotions that he had before, however, now that the pain is ending, he feels nothing,  and he wants to feel something, hence he submerges himself amongst the tears once again only to reflect on the unnecessary torture he put himself through previously.  At (4:08) BTS  are on the verge of finding the light at the end of the tunnel and they are all running and encouraging each other to escape.  At (4:12) Jin opens the curtains and lets in all the light from the world which shows how happiness and light have finally arrived.  Then at (4:15) BTS are all enjoying their night near the fire together. This time, instead of fire being dangerous, it is used to display happiness as BTS are using it for warmth. We can also see this when Rap Monster slightly jumps back at (4:15) which indicates that he refuses to let the fire harm him; Jimin, V and J-Hope do the same straight after him. As they have not been harmed, their success is seen as Jungkook and Suga laugh together. Moreover, from (4:18 – 4:27), we see V attempting to murder the man as he repeatedly smashes the glass bottle into his stomach. Here, his wrath is liberated as the violence is intense. During this time, we also see flashes of BTS messing and joking around with each other, they are becoming happier and they are feeling the freedom as the abusive man/the girl that betrayed them is getting weaker and her hold on them is slipping away. At (4:28) Jin slips the last tear just before at (4:30), the man/girl is finally killed. Straight after this, the fireworks begin and BTS are celebrating.  They also go back to stereotypical ideas of fun for boys as they celebrate with a car; this clearly demonstrates how they are going back to a normal life now that the girl has been rid off. The smiles do not stop and finally they are content and jolly!

7) From (4:42) onwards, BTS begin to reflect on their previous acts and they also allow themselves to acknowledge that they have officially been set free and their rebellion against the girl and their emotions has become a success. Suga brings in an oil barrel, V lets go of the blooded glass in his hands, here he drops his previous alcoholic habits and also realises that he has finally killed the girl. Jungkook puts his hands up at the fire and says “wooaaah” as if mimicking the girls strength that she had used on BTS before to degrade them. Suga spills the oil all around the room to make sure that he can light up every part of the room; also, he stands in the middle of the bed to make sure that he is safe. J-Hope throws his pills in the fire very joyously as he knows he no longer needs them and he is rebelling against the girl. Then at (4:54), Rap Monster drops the lollipop, as it hits the money on the floor, it turns into a cigarette. His facial expression shows how he sees the lollipop as useless and tasteless. This is significant as I explained about the symbolic meaning of the lollipop before.  (He happens to be eating a lollipop which represents his childlike situation. The lollipop also represents youth which is the concept of the album). Now that Rap Monster feels like this about the lollipop suggests that he has left his childlike intellect and he is no more glued to the girl. He can now taste the tastelessness of the lollipop and therefore discards it just like the relationship as he understands how flavourless it was. As it turns into a cigarette, this indicates that his child-like demeanour has now changed to an adult one instead as cigarettes are taken by adults. Also, cigarettes are harmful for the body and they are also addictive – just like the girl. Hence, due to the cigarette being thrown onto the floor, it shows that Rap Monster rejects it. Furthermore, since it falls onto Rap Monsters hard earned money, it demonstrates how this money came from working so hard at the petrol station and the car representing the girl that left him. Hence, this money is worthless as he was paid in a disrespectful manner; as a result, he even throws the cigarette/lollipop onto the money as he refuses to take this disrespect.  As soon as the cigarette hits the floor, Suga’s room ignites. At this point, he is destroying the room as it is filled with lies and all the memories of the girl. Also, as I mentioned before, Suga ignites his own fire and passion as what the girl provided him with was insufficient. He’s left in the middle of the fire where its dry – this symbolises how he has realised that he was only creating his own fires and rifts and making himself sad and isolating himself. He caused it, he has the power to set himself free, due to this, he now allows himself to forget about the girl by burning the memories, likewise, he recognises that he was left alone in the middle by the girl and as his revenge, he burns her memories down just as she burned him down.

8) conclusion: From (4:59) we see BTS looking back to the beginning of their journey when they were at the start of their pain release as Jimin is burning the note; V’s head is bleeding from the fight and he cries it out. J-Hope had fainted and is laying on the floor; Rap Monster is isolated at the petrol station. They look back on this to reflect on their progress and to exemplify their delight and freedom. Later at (5:07) Jungkook hops onto the barrier by himself. He is in the light and BTS have finally reached the end of the tunnel. It’s as if he is on the edge of life and death as he jogs on the barrier and we’re not sure which side of the barrier he will jump off onto next – onto the pathway, or into the ocean/lake to die? Will he allow himself the joy or will he fall back into misery? One second later, the rest of BTS run in which offers him the encouragement to be happy and alive. Then we see V and Jimin is anguish, here the pain is thought about then forgotten as BTS realise that they do not want to fall back into that hideous misery. After this we see Jungkook hop of the barrier and he runs along with the rest of BTS as he chooses to live! Through this scene, Jungkook represents all of BTS’ final actions. BTS carry on running together and enjoying their liberty. We then see a close up of V and Jin and their facial expressions say it all that their minds are finally care-free and at peace. Their expressions are innocent yet still look as if they have recovered from a huge traumatic experience – which is actually the case.  BTS stand at the edge of the water yet do not fall in, they remain there for enjoyment. This suggest that since they are now over the trauma, even being near this suicidal area does not threaten them as they now see the beauty of the ocean/lake rather than the dangers. Also, since they are enjoying it, it indicates that despite all the torment they had been through, in the end it was all a learning experience as they are now happy after finding the solution. They all jump around joyously as they wave at the birds that fly away taking BTS’ sorrows away with them.  In particular, Jin’s smiley face and jumping is most obvious as he was the suffocated one locked in a room but now he is like a bird set free. The end scenery is beautiful as they all stare at the clear atmosphere and the birds disappear. BTS can now start afresh and have reached their enlightenment. All’s well that ends well!
