On Top Of the Hill (When the Sun Sets)

Baekhyun sat in the cafeteria, his eyes scanning the whole room for any sign of his long term crush, Kim Jongin. When his eyes caught the subject of his adoration, his body shook in glee and his mouth turned into a breath taking smile.

He sighed dreamily, not even noticing the presence of his best friend who was watching him in amusement.

“Baek,” it was always like this, Chanyeol would call for the shorter one but with still being in his dreamy state the other would unconsciously ignore the giant until the bell would ring for the third time that day (indicating that the class would start in five minutes) and when he would finally snap out of his daydream he would see his best friend packing his lunch back in, ready to go to class leaving him with an untouched lunch.

Left with no choice, he would pack his lunch back in too and leave the cafeteria, trying to catch up with his best friend who always walked faster than usual for the sake of seeing Baekhyun suffer. He would and initially slow down and walk towards their class happily; Or better said Baekhyun shared to the world everything about how perfect Jongin was, with Chanyeol nodding at every sentences the shorter spluttered.

“Hey have you ever heard about the legend of the hill behind our school?” Jongdae asked and Baekhyun raised his eyebrows in surprise.

“They say if you watch the sun setting for 51 days straight, your love will reciprocate.”

Baekhyun was a logic person, he didn’t believe in mythos or legends. Heck, he didn’t even believe in the human revolution; from monkey to human.

But then again, love was a strong word. As a teenager; a gay one for that matter, he always dreamed  about his true love and Kim Jongin left a deep impression in his heart.

For him, he believed that Kim Jongin was his destined mate, his soul mate. So that’s why, when Jongdae told him about the legend, his heart thumped with joy and he was willing to give it a try.

Because it was love.

“Baek, I love you. I seriously do,” Chanyeol said, panting and breathing ragged, “but I don’t think I can climb this hill for another 50 days.”

Baekhyun pouted, using his ultimate puppy eyes to soften the tall giants heart, “Channie, I will make you lunch for the next 50 days, how about it?”

The tall giant chuckled, leaving the shorter boy confused, “My mom makes better lunch than you, so I don’t think so. Besides, I don’t want your mom killing you because you burnt her kitchen.”

Baekhyun hissed at the answer, “Fine, I will sleep at your house for the next 50 days?” seeing that Chanyeol was about to answer, he quickly added, “We could play games, having fun…” he trailed off, “cuddling!”

On top of the hill, Baekhyun rested his head on Chanyeol’s shoulder, smiling in content when the sun settled, leaving them in some sort of darkness.

“Chanyeol, let’s go home, your house.”

Weeks passed and Baekhyun gradually became tired from the constant hiking with his bestfriend while Chanyeol, the not so active giant, was even worse than him. He would always find his bestfriend limping towards their class, leaving him with unbearable amounts of guilt.

“Chanyeol, I don’t think you have to follow me today.”

Chanyeol, obviously shocked asked, “Why?”

“Your leg is hurting, Chanyeol,” he replied with a frown.

“Baek, we discussed this before, I accompany you to the hill and you sleep at my house in return.”

“But your leg…”

Chanyeol smiled, ruffling the puppy’s hair, “No biggie, I have you to massage it for me.”

They sat in silence as the sun set yet again, with Chanyeol's arms wrapped around the shorter one's shoulders, providing him warmth.

Baekhyun lay on Chanyeol’s bed, chin propped on his hand as he looked at the calendar with so many outcrossed red marks on it.

He smiled, hand grazing over the marks, “Three more weeks, huh?”

He heard some rustling sound from his left and saw Chanyeol who was busy rummaging through his drawer to find something that Baekhyun didn't have any idea off.

“What are you looking for?”

The giant didn’t reply but instead sat down on his bed, hands supporting a photo album that, as Baekhyun recognized, contained lots of their childhood photos.

The giant smiled, lying besides the shorter male and opened the album.

“Do you remember this, Baek?” Chanyeol asked, finger pointing at a photo of child Chanyeol holding a blue teddy bear while child Baekhyun was tipping on his toes, trying to take the bear from the giant’s grip.

“Of course I remember, you big oaf. You were a jerk back then,” Baekhyun pouted, feeling his chest spread with warmth at the sound of Chanyeol’s chuckles.

He scooted closer, so that his cheek touched the side of Chanyeol’s neck, sniffing the musky smell of Chanyeol.

“What about this?” Baekhyun pointed at the photo of Chanyeol wearing a wig and a dress.

The giant grunted in regret but the chuckles gave him away, “The embarrassment that I’ve been through.”

Baekhyun laughed, “At least I was there and cross-dressing with you, right?”

“You are different, you make a hot girl.”

“If that’s your attempt to make me feel better, I don’t think you succeed.”

“But I’m serious.”

“I’ve got about 20 days to go. Isn't it great, Jongdae?” Baekhyun asked while stuffing his mouth with food, what made him look like a chipmunk.

“You know, when I told you about the legend, I didn't think you would do it for real,” Jongdae said.

“Love makes you blind, Jongdae,” Jongdae gagged.

Baekhyun giggled and was about to stuff his mouth with food again but a pair of hands stopped him from doing so. Baekhyun looked at Chanyeol in confusion who just shook his head with a frown.

“If you keep eating like that, your stomach will get hurt,” Chanyeol said as he grabbed the chopsticks from Baekhyun’s hands and started feeding him instead, with the latter happily opening his mouth, giggling when sauce accidently dripped at the corner of his mouth.

“Talk about love,” Jongdae said, thus catching their attention, “You guys sure look like a couple.”

At this Baekhyun snorted, “We’re bestfriends, Jongdae.”

“Sure, whatever you say.”

Baekhyun wheezed for the umpteenth time that morning while Chanyeol gave him worried looks, “Baek, I could stay home and take care of you, you know.”

Baekhyun shook his head, shifting his position from sitting to lying because his head hurt a little, “It’s fine really. You should go to school, I can take care of myself.”

Chanyeol shook his head from Baekhyun’s stubbornness, putting his palm on top of Baekhyun’s forehead, hissing when he felt how hot it was. Baekhyuns eyebrows furrowed when he saw Chanyeol running to the kitchen.

The giant appeared seconds later, a bowl filled with cold water in his hands before setting it on the table besides the bed. He then rummaged through the drawer until he found a handkerchief, dipping it at the cold water, squeezing it to make sure the handkerchief was dry enough to be put on top of the latter’s forehead.

He once again ran to the kitchen after settling the handkerchief and came back later with a pill and a glass of water.

“Make sure you swallow the pill later, kay?”

Chanyeol said, kissing the shorter on top of the clothed forehead before grabbing his things and going to school. Baekhyun smiled warmly at his best friend’s behavior before falling into a deep slumber.

Baekhyun didn’t know how long he had been sleeping but it certainly was long enough because when he opened his eyes, he was no longer on the comfort of the bed but he was on top of someone’s shoulders, or simply put, he was being piggybackrided.

“Chanyeol?” he called out with his raspy voice, getting a hum in respond, “Where are we going?”

“The hill”

They sat at the ground in silence, well except Chanyeol since he was humming to a song that suspiciously sounded like ‘My Answer’ until Baekhyun eventually joined in and sang together with Chanyeol, seeing the sky turn into a beautiful shade of orange with a blanket wrapped around his body (courtesy of Chanyeol).

8 days to go

It felt good to come back to school, Baekhyun concluded. Even though it was just for two days, he didn't like it when he missed school because he couldn’t do anything at home what with being sick and all. Then, there was also  Chanyeol who didn’t allow him to do anything other than lying down and breathing. That bestfriend of his could be very protective sometimes.

He grinned when Jongdae waved at him. He smiled back as he took his seat besides Chanyeol (of course) which was also  conveniently behind Jongdae.

“So how are you?” Jongdae asked.

“Breathing and ready to kick some .”

“Just making sure. Yesterday Jongin came to return a book he borrowed from me and asked where you were,” Jongdae winked at the now smiling Baekhyun.

“For real?” Baekhyun squealed, “It is kind of weird, we don’t even talk to each other.”

“About that…” Jongdae trailed off, looking between Baekhyun and the now frowning Chanyeol, “I might or might not have told him about your feelings.”

Baekhyuns mouth hung open in shock, “You did what?” he breathlessly asked, cheeks turned into a deep shade of red, “How can I live now?”

Baekhyun wallowed in his self-pity as he heard Chanyeol hiss a ‘this is your fault’ at Jongdae who in return hissed back a sassy ‘it was on accident’.

“Baekhyunnie,” Chanyeol cooed, playing with his nape, making the adorable short boy look at him.

“What should I do now? I’m so embarrassed that I want to die.”

The giant gasped dramatically, trapping the boys face with his big hands, “Listen, it’s good that Jongdae told Jongin about your feelings. At least Jongin will notice you, right?”

Baekhyun fell into a deep silence, cherry lips pulled into an adorable pout as he slumped against his desk until the teacher walked in and got ready to teach.

“Hey Channie,” Baekhyun whispered after 10 minutes in the lesson.

Chanyeol hummed in acknowledgement, making Baekhyun continue his sentence, “I think you’re right.”

It was faint and Baekhyun almost didn’t hear it, “Of course I’m right.”

Seven

Baekhyun liked to think that it was luck when Jongin came to his class the next day during the recess.

Maybe it was luck when Jongin invited him to eat lunch together, just the two of them, under a shady tree besides the cafeteria.

Of course Baekhyun accepted, leaving his classroom with Jongdae  happily waving at him while Chanyeol softly smiled at him.

They were eating in silence when Jongin finally broke the silence with a question that he, for sure, wasn’t ready to answer.

“Correct me if I’m wrong, but Jongdae said you have feelings for me,” Baekhyun chocked, “It’s an honor really.”

Baekhyun’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion, barely managing a chocked, ‘huh’.

“I’m glad to be admired by such a beauty like you.”

Baekhyun bit his lips, trying hard to not scream in excitement, “I’m not beautiful.”

Jongin chuckled at the answer, “You are beautiful, really. I would like to ask you out for a date tomorrow.”

Baekhyuns eyes widened in shock as he peered at Jongin through his bangs while ducking his head in embarrassment, “Really?”

“Yes, tomorrow.”

Baekhyun smiled, nodding his head in agreement, “Tomorrow.”

“Chanyeol?” Baekhyun called, looking at the sun that was about to set in any minute.

“Yes, Baek?”

“Jongin asked me out for a date.”

“That’s great.”

“Tomorrow night.”

The giant hummed in reply, distancing himself when Baekhyun unconsciously leaned his head to rest at his broad shoulder.

Six

The bell rang for the fourth time; students quickly packed their things to go home. Since the next day was Saturday, everyone was very eager to go home to find comfort of their beloved bed but then, there was Baekhyun who was staring at his bestfriend; obviously uncomfortable.

“Baek, what are you doing? The sun is going to set in forty minutes,” Chanyeol said.

When the latter didn’t reply but instead chewed on his lip in nervousness, Chanyeol crouched down in front of the still sitting Baekhyun in wonder.

“What’s wrong?” Chanyeol asked, brushing a lost strand of Baekhyun’s hair in place.

“My date is in two hours…” Baekhyun trailed off, looking like a kicked puppy.

Chanyeol sighed, standing so that he could ruffle the short boy’s hair, “You go home first, kay?”

“But the hill…”

“I will be there to watch it for you.”

Baekhyun scrunched his nose, “Does that even count?”

“It does, if it’s Park Chanyeol,” Chanyeol said, helping Baekhyun putting his bag on.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, Baek. Now go before I change my mind.”

Baekhyun heard the giant laugh when he ran through the hallway, making him smile in return.

Sometimes, he even wondered how a great person like Chanyeol became his bestfriend.

The date with Jongin was great. Baekhyun learned a lot about the younger. He discovered that Jongin loved dancing and was great at it.

“Why don’t you show me?” Baekhyun asked, smiling fondly at the boy in front of him.

“Here?” Jongin chuckled, looking at everyone in the restaurant, “I don’t think so.”

Baekhyun let out a disappointed sigh, which caught the youngers attention.

“Why don’t you come to my practice tomorrow?”

“Of course”

It was ten at night when the two decided to head home. They walked side by side, hands occasionally brushing against each other making Baekhyuns face turn into a lovely shade of red as he looked at Jongin secretly. The younger however just chuckled at the boy’s antics and finally intertwined their hands together, swaying them back and forth as he hummed to a song.

Baekhyun smiled, maybe Jongin was his soul mate.

“Chanyeol, I think my love did come true”

“That’s great”

“I don’t have to go to the hill, anymore. Isn’t it great?”

“Yeah”

Five

Yesterday was great and Baekhyun found himself sitting at the bench near Chanyeol’s house, patiently waiting for Jongin to come.

He remembered Chanyeol ruffling his hair and chirping a happy ‘good luck’ to him while he whined at his ruined hair. Seriously, he didn’t think anyone could replace Chanyeol; the giant was important, far more important than his parents. Chanyeol was a part of him and it would always be like that.

He hated waiting, but since it was Jongin, he didn’t really take it to heart. Jongin came ten minutes later, breathing ragged, a clear sign that he had been running from wherever he was. Baekhyun’s heart throbbed in admiral, waiting for the younger’s breath to become normal again.

“I’m sorry to keep you waiting,” Jongin said, reaching for Baekhyun’s hand so that he could join them together.

“It’s okay,” Baekhyun smiled sweetly as he wiped the sweat on the youngers forehead away, using his free hand.

“Let’s go”

Four

If Baekhyun was honest with himself, he did notice that Chanyeol kept distancing himself from him. Be it when he tried to cuddle with the said giant or tried to lean his head on the latter’s shoulder.

It was subtle but Baekhyun noticed it. It broke his heart to get treated like that yet he didn’t know the real reason, but he didn’t bring the matter to Chanyeol since he thought that Chanyeol must have his own reason. It was like this, until that night; when Chanyeol suddenly said that he wanted to sleep in the living room.

“Can you tell me what’s wrong?” Baekhyun asked the giant who was in the middle of taking extra blanket and pillow from the closet (since they shared the same pillow and blanket).

“What do you mean?”

“Did I…” Baekhyun swallowed the lump in his throat when Chanyeol’s hand rested on the doorknob, ready to turn it anytime, “Did I offend you?”

Chanyeol sighed, staring  him straight in the eyes with so much emotion that it made Baekhyun’s heart race, “No, you didn’t do anything wrong.”

 “Then why-”

“Just…” Chanyeol’s grip on the pillow tightened, “Just let it go.”

Baekhyun tried his best not to cry when he saw Chanyeol slamming the door, leaving him alone in the darkness. He really tried not to cry but later, at night, he found himself curling on the giant’s bed, crying his heart out.

Three

He should be happy when his long time crush finally asked him to be his boyfriend. Baekhyun should, but there he was, standing in front of the ‘oh so great’ Kim Jongin, chewing his lips in nervousness.

“Can I think about this first?”

It was shown on Jongin’s face that he was shocked to hear that kind of answer but then he smiled, making Baekhyun smile hesitantly in return.

When the school ended, Baekhyun packed his things and grinned at Chanyeol, waiting for the giant to finish packing so that they could go home together.

“Why don’t you go first? I’ve got something to do, “Chanyeol said when they arrived at the school’s gate.

Baekhyun nodded, “Want me to accompany you?”

“No,” the answer was a bit harsh, at least to Baekhyun, since Chanyeol would always answer with a 'yes' or a ‘it’s too cold, you’re going to get sick’.

So when Chanyeol already was on his walk opposite from the road home, he smiled bitterly, easing his hurting heart with chanting ‘Chanyeol is busy’ in his head.

Sighing, Baekhyun looked at the clock for the fourth time. He tried to focus on his homework that was messily sprawled out on Chanyeol’s bed but to no avail. His mind would unconsciously go back to the thoughts of Chanyeol and his whereabouts.

He heard the front door opening, making him run to the front door only to be greeted with a tired looking Mrs. Park.

The mid age woman looked tired, maybe because her job that required her to wake early in the morning and return in the middle of the night.

“Where’s Chanyeol, sweetie?” she asked.

“Up stairs, sleeping”

God knew how much guilt he felt when he had to lie but he didn’t have any option if he didn’t want Chanyeol to get in trouble or to possibly get grounded. The woman nodded, trudging sleepily towards her bedroom.

Two

Baekhyun lost count on how many hours he had been waiting for Chanyeol at the couch in the living room. All he knew was that when he woke up, a blanket draped over his body, warming him up he was no longer on the couch but instead on Chanyeol’s bed; his homework now on the table besides the bed.

The second thing he noticed, unfortunately, was that he was late to school. So without much thinking (no that he had the time to do so) he quickly got ready to go to school, not forgetting the lunch pack Mrs. Park prepared for him at the kitchen.

To say that Baekhyun was confused was an understatement because when Jongin invited him to lunch like the past few days, he agreed whole heartily but when Jongin pulled him in to a kiss; he couldn’t help but push the younger away.

He was very sure that the younger was his soul mate but why didn’t he feel the spark at his heart or why didn't his stomach feel like there were butterflies swarming in it, just like what a romance book described what two persons that loved each other would experience?

Why did it feel… dull?

“Jongin,” Baekhyun called, “I… I’m sorry but I can't accept your feelings.”

Baekhyun couldn’t help but feel angry when Chanyeol yet again left him alone after the school ended.

Just where did things go wrong?

“Chanyeol, where did you go?” Baekhyun asked when the giant finally returned at one in the morning.

He saw the giant flinched in shock before he gained his senses back and shook his head, “Nowhere.”

“Why are you being like this?!” blinded with fury, Baekhyun yelled, catching the giant off guard.

Baekhyun could see that Chanyeol struggled to keep his calm, “Be like what, Baek?”

“What is your problem?!”

“There is no problem!” Chanyeol replied, emphasizing the word no.

“Do you not trust me?”

Chanyeol remained quiet, fists clutched tightly against his sides.

“Do you even value our friendship?” Baekhyun swallowed, looking at Chanyeol with teary eyes.

“I do,” Chanyeol was desperate but Baekhyun was even more desperate.

He needed to know what was wrong with his bestfriend.

“Then why?”

“I love you, okay!” Chanyeol snapped.

“I love you too.”

It was true, Chanyeol was his other half and he loved him. He didn’t see why it was a problem, why Chanyeol was acting like this.

Chanyeol chuckled bitterly, “That’s the problem, Baek. You’re so blind that I want to cry.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Forget it” And the door slammed shut.

One

Baekhyun went to school with eye bags under his eyes making Jongdae frown in concerns.

“Are you sure you okay?” Jongdae asked for the third time in which he got a single nod from his friend.

Baekhyun sighed, looking at the empty table besides him warily.

“By the way, where’s Chanyeol? Usually you two would be in each other’s arms right now. I start to think that you two love each other in a not so platonic way, you know.”

Baekhyun banged his head on top of the table, resting his head on it afterward, “What do you mean?”

Jongdae hummed, tapping his chin thoughtfully, “For example his eyes sparkle whenever he sees you or the way he smiles weirdly at you, you know the one that makes his right eye twitch, yeah that.”

The idea that his bestfriend might like, no, love him in more than a bestfriend kind of love made his heart thump uncontrollably and his belly flip in an almost unpleasant way.

Is this what they call love?

He remembered the way Chanyeol would always protect him when the teachers were mad at him because he didn’t do his homework or he didn’t pay attention in class, resulting in both of them getting a detention. Then Chanyeol would scold him to pay attention for real in class and do his homework while he would pout and sulk for the rest of the day.

Or that one time when he was getting bullied by the seniors because apparently he was ‘small’ and ‘weak’. Chanyeol had come and beat them up for him and he remembered after that Chanyeol had to go to hospital because he broke his left hand.

Oh the guilt he carries until today.

And that’s the main reason he learned Hapkido, in hope to protect himself and possibly, if he could, Chanyeol.

And then, there was Chanyeol who would often tell him that he loved him. He wasn't fazed by it because he thought it was an everyday thing for the tall boy but apparently he was wrong. He didn’t notice it until today.

God, he was so stupid.

The way Chanyeols eyes were full with love and sincerety just for him.

Chanyeol love him and he was so stupid that he didn’t realize it, blinded with his crush towards Jongin.

He stood up, grabbing the teacher’s attention and few of his classmates, eyes filled with tears and regret. The teacher yelled at him and told him to sit down but at that point, he couldn’t even hear it as the image of Chanyeol’s tear stricken face etched at the back of his mind.

So, with the thought in his mind, he hastily put on his bag and ran towards Chanyeol’s house only to find it empty so he ran to the only place that came in his mind, the hill.

Their hill

His heart twisted in pain when the image of Chanyeol sitting on top of the hill, alone and waiting for his stupid self to finally realize the giant’s feel towards him and for him to finally realize that his heart already belonged to one and only Park Chanyeol came into his view.

That he too, had loved Park Chanyeol long ago, more than a bestfriend should.

God, how more stupid could he be?

Panting, he saw Chanyeol who was lying on top of the grass, staring blankly at the blue sky .

“Park Chanyeol, you stupid oaf,” he called, making the giant scramble to sit on top of the grass with his eyes wide in shock.

“You stupid…” Baekhyuns voice cracked as tears finally streamed down his red cheek, “Stupid Park Chanyeol.”

“Baek, what’s wrong?” Chanyeol pulled him into his embrace, rubbing his back comfortingly.

“Nothing’s wrong. Just me finally finding my true love.”

He could feel the way Chanyeol froze and Baekhyun wanted to laugh at how adorable the giant was.

“That’s great,” Chanyeol broke the hug, “So… I guess Jongin is the one.”

“Close enough but no”

“What do you mean?”

“You,” was all Baekhyun said as he pulled Chanyeol into a sweet kiss.

When they parted, Baekhyun finally smiled his breath taking smile that made his eyes turn into crescents, staring deeply into the giant’s eyes, “I love you.”

“But-”

“More than a bestfriend should”

It felt like magic when Chanyeol tilted his chin to plant a kiss on his lips, muttering countless of ‘I love you’s to him while holding his hand. Baekhyun knew he couldn't possibly forget this moment when they sat together on the grass , sharing their lips as the sun settled and their hands intertwined.

Maybe the legend was true all along because it doesn’t matter how or when your love will reincorporate as long as you watch the sun setting for 51 days straight because Chanyeol was there for all those days, waiting for the love of his life to finally turn and look at him.

And he did, Baekhyun did.
