So Sweet, Yum!

A Midsummer Night's Sweetness

If you want to listen and/or know the song that inspired me to write this... Here's the audio with lyrics and translations for you~

____

                Goodness, it’s surprisingly cold tonight.

Sohyun rubbed her palms together as she walked on the streets of Seoul. She sighed every now and then and shook her head. Well, she just had her break-up with her long-time boyfriend. She thought that they would hit it off. Like, ending up together as they grow old or something. They were in a relationship since they were in their first year in high school. Now, she’s working as a singer in a bar and taking her college. Then, he broke it off with her. He said he was bored and they weren’t just working out. Sohyun couldn’t really say she was sad or angry because he does have a point. It’s as if being in dates with him were tasks that she was appointed to do. There were no more sparks or excitement.

Maybe breaking up with him was the best thing to do.

But even so, she wanted to talk about it with someone. Of course, deep in her heart there’s still a little scar. She loved him. They even made quite a fuss about breaking up. It was funny because after one week of their breakup, he called her and said that they should get back together. He even went to extent of forcing himself into her apartment. But Sohyun didn’t want him anymore– that was what she was thinking as he pledged to love her better more than ever.

She knows that it’s over. The lingering feelings inside of her should not grow anymore but it should be disposed. So she did her best to drive him away. She shouted at him to get out and to let her go, even though her eyes were saying the opposite. She was crying. Fortunately, she was determined to forget about him so she did it.

Sohyun grabbed her phone and checked her contact list. Hyuna? Ugh. I don’t think so. She said she was out of town with her boyfriend. Jiyoon? Oh not a good idea. She hates going out when it’s vacation. Jihyun then? I guess- Ugh. She also went to a trip with her boyfriend. Gayoon is so out of the picture. She said to not disturb her this week.

The woman ran through her contacts but couldn’t see a person that she could contact. It seemed like everybody have plans. It was natural though. It’s midsummer and it’s vacation week, so it’s natural for people to use the time for their loved ones.

“I’ve been walking in circles since 9 a.m,” she sighed to herself as she continued to scan her contact list. Well, the girl decided to go for a walk earlier in the morning. But there was something in her that made her feel to not come back home yet. She kept walking around the streets in her teal summer dress and 4-inch heels. Yup, she was wearing that outfit from 9 in the morning up to 8 evening.

Sohyun continued to boringly scrutinize her contacts but something caused her to suddenly stop scrolling down. She saw one name that made her heart bang violently against her chest.

Suga, she bit her lower lip as she stared at the said name. Butterflies played inside her stomach as memories flooded back to her head.

Min Yoongi or more known as ‘Suga’ was Sohyun’s senior. He was older than her by a year. They were in a clique since middle school. They were so close that they spend each day at each other’s houses. They were the best of friends in their circle. Nobody could separate them.

That is until the last year of middle school came. One of Sohyun’s friends in the clique told her that Suga likes her. Of course she didn’t believe at first. She knew that he only looks at her in a friendly way. She was so ecstatic to hear that though. The young Sohyun didn’t realize that she has a crush on her best friend.

Even so, she wasn’t going to believe it if it weren’t because of an accidental eavesdrop. She heard the words ‘I like Sohyun’ directly from Suga when she was about to go to their gang’s usual spot in the garden. That incident made her overly conscious of Suga’s presence. Hence, it made her avoid his usual touches or talks. She became awkward with him.

Suga was also the reason why she dated the guy she just broke up with. The guy confessed to her in their freshman year in high school. She thought that maybe dating other guys would make her less awkward with Suga. She thought that by having a boyfriend, she and Suga could go back to normal. Unfortunately though, Suga stopped approaching her when she started dating someone else. He didn’t go to her house anymore. He even joined a new group of friends. They didn’t contact nor did talk to each other. Even after graduation.

Now that I think about it, I’m quite an embarrassment back then, Sohyun thought as her face flushed. Dating another guy because you were avoiding someone else? Sohyun sighed again and covered her face. Darn, I was so immature.

After five good seconds, Sohyun went back to reality. She kept on staring at her phone. She was hesitating to give him a text because he might not reply. Would calling him be a better thing? Well, Sohyun thinks so. She then pressed call.

And then, she became frantic as she heard the ringing from the other line. What if he changed his number– after all, it has been awhile since they really met? Or even worse than that, what if he already deleted her number? What if he’s doing something? What if he’s doing nothing but was just ignoring her call? A string of what ifs filled Sohyun’s thoughts as she anxiously waited for him to answer her call.

“Sohyun?” a deep voice woke her up from her thoughts. She felt her heart beat faster than usual. It has been a long time since she heard his voice. His voice was deeper compared with before.

“Ah, Hi there Yoongi-” she hesitated for a while. Should she be formal or be not? Well, it has been some years before they talked again. She shouldn’t act too familiar yet. So, formal it is. “-ssi. It has been a long time since we’ve talked.”

She heard chuckles from the other line, “Why so formal, Sohyunnie?”

“I don’t really know. Oh my, this is awkward,” she mumbled as she gave herself a facepalm.

Suga laughed even more, “Kwon Sohyun, you’re hilarious. Oh, why did you call me anyways?”

Sohyun held her breath for awhile. She felt her heart throbbing against her chest. She couldn’t really understand as to why she’s so nervous, “I-I was thinking if we could meet up and drink together? I just need someone to talk to.”

The woman heaved a sigh as she waited for his answer. But then, there was only silence from the other line, “He-hey. It’s fine if you’re not free. I just called you out of the bl-”

“I’d be obliged to come. Where are you now?”

               “I’m at the…”

Sohyun told Suga her location. The man bid farewell to her and hung after saying that he’s on his way. The young woman clutched her phone near her chest as she tightly closed her eyes. She was quite excited to see him again. Last time she saw him, he was about a few inches taller than her. Thinking about the years that had passed, Sohyun was excited to see how Suga looks like now.

Waiting for Suga was nerve-wrecking. Sohyun would look around her then go back to staring back at the ground. She was fidgeting on her place. There were people staring at her, making her feel quite nervous. They might be staring at her because of her odd clothing at the cold night.

“Sohyun!” a man called, making Sohyun look towards the voice’s direction.

She ran towards him and laughed, “Suga-ssi, it’s you!”

The man laughed, “Look at you! You’ve changed a lot!”

             “So as you!”

The woman wouldn’t deny that he changed in a good way. He became a lot taller than her. He looked firmer than before. And now, he has piercings. His complexion was still as white as before but goodness, does he look dashing.

Sohyun gave him a small smile as she guided their way, “Shall we have a drink?”

“Well,” Suga chuckled in his deep voice. “You said that in your invitation so I expect it.”

           “Oh, yes, I did.”

The two went to a small food house. When they went inside, they saw some people -who were probably colleagues- drinking and laughing to themselves. Seeing a lot of people inside, the young woman chose a table outside where there is silence. After sitting down, they ordered 2 bottles of Soju.

Sohyun poured the alcohol to their drinking glasses. She gave the shot glass to Suga and grabbed the other one for herself. The both of them drank the Soju and let out a satisfied ‘Ah!’ afterwards. The alcohol scorched down their throats but the sensation gave them warmness.

“It has been such a long time since we have been together,” Sohyun laughed as she poured some alcohol to their empty shot glasses. “Ah, it seemed like forever.”

Suga chuckled and nodded as he raised his glass up in the air. He gave Sohyun a big smile, showing his pearly whites. The woman found herself smiling when she saw his adorable grin. It reminded her of their past friendship in middle school; the time wherein their world roamed only around the two of them. It may sound incredibly cheesy and corny but it was true. They used to be inseparable.

“So, how have you been?” Suga asked and drank his Soju. He cutely winced afterwards.

The woman grinned as she played with the glass in her hand, “I’m in college and I have a part-time job which is singing- it’s only in a little bar though. How about you?”

“Me? Well, I’m just the same. I’m still working hard on composing songs. A recording company liked my songs and asked me to write more. If they enjoyed and liked it, it could be possible that I could be a recording artist,” Suga replied as he poured a little liquor for himself. “Oh yeah, are you still dating that guy in high school?”

“You knew that? Oh, and congratulations about your songs!”

“Thanks. Anyways, of course, I was watching you two. Just so you know. Tch, you two were disgustingly clingy and cheesy. I kid, haha.”

Ironic to Suga’s insults, Sohyun felt a little happiness in her heart. Her cheeks flushed as she thought: He was watching me?

“Well, I just broke up with him last week,” she nonchalantly replied. She wanted to sound as if nothing happened. Even though she didn’t originally love that man from the start, she learned to love him through the time they were together.

“You guys broke up? Sorry, I shouldn’t have brought it up.”

Sohyun didn’t want to hear a sorry from him. She doesn’t want to feel that she lost something. An apology is what she would like to least hear tonight, “It’s fine.”

“Is that the reason why you called me out here?”

“Kind of. But I guess it’s not like that now. I mean, I don’t know. Maybe you’re not into listening about break-ups and stuff.”

“You’re right about that. I hate sappy things. No offense!”

          “No offense taken.”

Suga drank another shot of Soju and refilled it afterwards. He gave Sohyun a lopsided grin as he patted her head, making Sohyun taken aback. “The years passed yet you’re still pretty. You’ve gone even prettier, if I may say.”

“A-ah,” Sohyun was too flabbergasted with Suga’s words, and she couldn’t get her composure back since Suga kept on ruffling her hair. She could feel her heart palpitate as she stared at Suga’s face. He was widely smiling. His face looked a little red, giving Sohyun the conclusion that he was a little drunk. Even so, her heart wouldn’t stop racing so fast.

Suga pouted which made Sohyun pant a little. She couldn’t catch her breath because of the sight, “It’s unfair Sohyun-ah. The other girls didn’t become so pretty like you.”

“What- Hey. L-look at yourself! You became so… so good yourself!” she almost shouted as she cupped her beet red cheeks.

“Haha, what’s with you blushing like crazy?” the man laughed as he tousled her hair. He let go of her as he slumped on his seat. He then looked back at Sohyun and scanned her for awhile. The woman felt herself flushing once again because of the man’s stare. Just what is his problem?

“What?”

“I like your hair right now. You cut it short back then in high school. I hated it so much but it seems that your boyfriend likes it that way. Tch.”

Sohyun couldn’t really reply to his words. He’s making her self-conscious of her appearance. And goodness, does he affect her heart’s beating. She felt like her chest would explode any moment now if he would compliment her some more.

“I just remembered that I liked you back then before you dated that guy,” Suga said out of the blue. Seriousness was painted on his face. He sighed and he looked quite distressed.

Actually, that expression of his– looking all troubled – was not good for the woman’s heart. It was as if he cares so much about his past feelings for her. It made her feel that he still likes her. But then, Sohyun realized that Suga was all just friendly tonight. There was no malice in his acts. He was just being him. They just missed being around each other. That thought made the woman sure that the man was being casual and funny towards her.

If he could act so flirty and comfy around me, why won’t I be open to him too?

Sohyun played with her fingers as she stared at the night sky filled with stars, “I actually knew that.”

“Huh?”

“I knew that you liked me. I heard you say it.”

The woman took a peek at the man’s face and saw him staring at the space. He was, like, frozen for a second. She was going to ask him what was the matter but then he got his composure back. He grabbed his shot glass and he immediately drank the liquor. He massaged his temples after putting his glass down, “Is that so? Mmm… I’m sorry for my nonsense ramblings. Just don’t mind me.”

Sohyun couldn’t help but let out some chuckles. Her eyes formed an eye smile as she began talking, “What’s with you being awkward, like, all of a sudden?”

“I just think I’m making you uncomfortable,” the man replied as he laid his head on the table. He was looking at Sohyun while pouting a bit.

The woman ruffled his dyed-in-red hair before she teases him, “Aren’t you the one who’s getting uncomfortable? Because I’m sure that I’m nowhere near uncomfortable.”

“Aigoo, I am just drunk, Sohyun-ah,” Suga sighed and gave the woman a smile. He gently took her hand away from his head as he sat up straight. He once again grabbed his shot glass and grabbed the second bottle of Soju. He poured some of the liquid in Sohyun’s glass and in his glass. He raised his glass up, “Cheers to us meeting again! Cheers to today!”

Laughter filled the night summer air as the two continued on drinking and conversing. They went back to the days that they were together. They said the things that they missed doing together. All of the adventures that almost put them in a bad situation made them laugh. All the teachers that they did offense to came to their minds and made them guilty for a while, but later on led them to laughter.

“I remember, Mrs. Ok,” Sohyun laughed as she drank her nth glass for the night. She was smiling widely with her cheeks reddened– which is probably because of the drink. “She was our guardian in our outing. Haha. Oh my goodness, I feel so guilty right now.”

“Well, you gotta admit it. Doing things against the rules could be sometimes fun,” Suga replied as he smiled at the drunken girl. She became so open and loud when she got drunk. The man was actually surprised that the woman was the type to get easily drunk. In her fifth glass, she was already slurring her words out and she was ecstatically laughing at herself. The man also became drunk earlier but later on came back to his senses after half an hour.

Sohyun giggled– which made the young man chuckle to himself– as she nodded enthusiastically, “I agree with you. Two hundred percent!”

Suga looked at their table and saw six empty bottles of Soju. The man was pretty sure that he only drank a lot from the first two bottles. For the rest of the bottles, he only took about two shots per bottle. His eyes turned towards the laughing figure in front of him, “Don’t tell me she drank all of those?”

Hmm... hmm… la la la,” the young woman hummed as she began to bob her head from left to right. They could hear a song playing from the food house. And it was awfully familiar. It was something they used to hear in their middle school era.

“I know this song,” Suga commented as he shook his head. “But I think I really hated it back then.”

The woman laughed out loud as she waved her hands excitedly, “Yeah, we used to insult this song. Unfortunately, I don’t remember its title.”

She then grabbed the Soju bottle and poured alcohol for herself. She was about to drink it but Suga stopped her. He snatched the shot glass from her hand and drank the liquor. She had her eyebrows furrowed as she looked at him, “Why’d you that? Isn’t that an indirect kiss? Haha.”

The young man chuckled and ruffled the girl’s already tousled hair. “Yeah, yeah. Let’s go for a walk, okay?”

“O-oh, sure,” the woman replied naively. She stared at him with her doe eyes, confusion taking over her. She took out her wallet, “We must pay as we go, right?”

“Don’t worry about it. I’ll shoulder the bill,” Suga replied and called for the waiter. He handed him a few bills before standing up.

Sohyun pouted as she glanced at him, “But I was the one who invited you out.”

“Then just treat me next time,” he smiled and took her gently by the hand. He helped her to stand up. The woman thought that he’ll continue holding her hand, but he stopped when she already stood up properly. Then they started walking.

“Okay then-” Sohyun stopped midsentence because of a sudden realization. “Wait, next time?”

“Yup, I think it’ll be fun to go out sometime.”

“Wouldn’t your girlfriend get angry?”

“And who says that I have a girlfriend?”

Sohyun froze on her steps. Suga looked at her and laughed, “Don’t tell me you didn’t realize that I do not have a girlfriend?”

“Ah- I yeah,” the woman replied and fidgeted on her place.

The man continued on laughing, making Sohyun flush in embarrassment, “If I have a girlfriend, I would not meet you in the middle of the night. Oh, Kwon Sohyun, you’re still so funny.”

“I-it’s because I’m drunk!” the woman defended, quite desperate to cover up her humiliation.

“I have never heard of a drunken person saying they’re drunk.”

“Well, now you have.”

The man laughed in response. He had the urge to ruffle to woman’s hair but he decided not to. The woman looked like she’s going to fall with just a single touch. She was walking sluggishly.

“You know what?” Sohyun giggled and looked at Suga. The man gave her a nod as an approval to continue. The woman then smiled at Suga but then tears suddenly fell down from her eyes. Suga’s eyes widened in shock because of the sudden surge of emotions from the lady.

“H-hey!”

“I was just surprised, you know?” the woman cried as she hugged the pole in front of her. “I didn’t expect him to break-up with me that day. It was too sudden.”

The atmosphere was filled the girl’s sobs. Suga kept his silence as he approached the girl. He heaved a sigh as he patted her head affectionately. He realized that he had been quite insensitive. She told him that their purpose of meeting up was because of her dreadful break-up but he didn’t want to listen to her rants. He didn’t want break-up stories. He didn’t want to hear anything about her boyfriend – Well now, ex-boyfriend. He didn’t want sappy stories.

Sohyun leaned to his touch as she continued crying, “I thought I was going to be okay but I wasn’t. I am not. I’m sorry, I know that you don’t want to hear anything about…”

The woman stopped talking and continued crying. She covered her face, causing her sobs to be muffled. Suga decided to remove Sohyun’s arms around the pole. He placed his arm around her shoulders and he guided her way.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” the woman cried.

Suga didn’t speak. He doesn’t know what words to say. For him, silence is the best way to comfort the girl. Corny words of comfort might be quite insincere so he decided to shut up and let the girl have a downpour of her feelings out.

Fortunately, the woman stopped crying after a while. Maybe it was because of the effect of the liquor that she became such a happy girl. She was laughing, dancing around. She was back to her happy drunken self. It was as if she didn’t cry just a while ago. Suga wondered if it was because of the effect of the alcohol or if it was because of the woman coming back to her senses. For the young man, the latter seemed more convincing, since the woman hates to appear sad in front of other people. Anyway, she’s now happy.

“I thought you wouldn’t come, you know?” Sohyun pouted for a second but then laughed afterwards. She walked before Suga. She then turned around with her hands at her back, “But thanks for coming. I really appreciate it.”

“Well, we were best buddies, right?” the young man replied, resisting the temptation to pinch her cheeks. She looked so cute– drunk kind of cute. He was relieved to see her smiling back again.

Then Sohyun turned around once again, the hem of her dress twirling along with her action. She was hopping a bit, well, and she was dancing. The woman didn’t know if it was the effect of the alcohol that intoxicated her systems but her cheeks were flushing. She thanked the heavens that it was nighttime, so Suga couldn’t see her blushing face– even though he saw it for probably a million times for tonight.

“I just missed you, Yoongi oppa,” she said and she sounded serious. She didn’t even sound drunk.

The man was taken aback because of her words. He froze for a while. He came back to his senses when he remembered that she was drunk. But then his heart pulsated violently when a thought occurred to him: Drunken people are more honest.

“Wha-”

“I didn’t tell you this because I just realized it when I go through my memories,” the woman interrupted. She still had her back faced Suga. And maybe, she wasn’t planning to let him see her face for some minutes. She doesn’t know if her face is still crimson, “I had a crush on you back then in middle school. I think I found it awkward that’s why I had a boyfriend.”

Silence filled the air as they continued walking. Suga seemed to be in daze. It was as if he’s still processing the information the girl stated. The woman, on the other hand, was praying to have the ground swallow her. Oh why did she say those ways so carelessly? Why didn’t she think before she spoke? Oh goodness, she was embarrassed to death.

“A-ah, forget what I said!” she shouted for she couldn’t suppress her embarrassment anymore. She ran away from him but then stopped. She ran back to him as she shouted, “A cockroach!”

She hid behind Suga as she pointed the ground. A big brown ugly cockroach was seen following her. Sohyun cried in panic as she tried to climb on Suga’s back. “Kill it! Kill it!”

Suga looked at the bug and stepped on it. He tried to hold back his laughter as he cleaned his shoe by continuously sliding his shoe against the ground, “It’s dead now, Sohyun-ah.”

The said woman immediately got off the man’s back. She covered her face in embarrassment as she tried not to stutter her words out, “Thank you.”

“Welcome,” Suga smiled. Sohyun was about to run away again but Suga grabbed her arm. He pouted, “Stop going away from me. You were the one who invited me so you shouldn’t just leave me.”

The woman bowed her head in embarrassment. She stole a glance to see Suga’s face. She saw that he was still pouting so she found herself quite guilty. She became too selfish. She thought that she must have made him feel bad. He was right – she was the one who invited him. That’s why she shouldn’t just leave him. She should stop acting childish because of her choice of words.

“I-I’m sorry,” she mumbled as she continued looking at the ground. She heard Suga clicked his tongue.

“Are you apologizing to the ground?”

Sohyun pouted and stared at Suga. His eyebrows were raised and he had his arms crossed over his chest. Sohyun looked at him with her puppy eyes. Finally, a playful twinkle ruled his eyes. Suga covered his mouth as he laughed out loudly, “I was joking! I was joking!”

“What the-!” Sohyun shouted as she punched Suga playfully. She was embarrassed as hell. She thought that she did something wrong. Well fortunately enough, the man was only kidding around. Now, although embarrassed, the woman felt more comfortable with the current atmosphere. Maybe it was the man’s purpose after all. Many years have passed but Suga really knows how to make her act normally.

Laughs from Suga and small shrieks from Sohyun filled the midsummer night air. Secretly, both of them were wishing for the time to stop. Or if the time was that greedy to not let itself stop, they request for it to slow down. But then, they were the ones who were greedy; greedier than time.

“Ah what the heck, it’s almost midnight,” the woman wistfully mumbled as she peeked at her phone. Time was too fast.

“Oh, is that so? It’s good that we have been walking to the direction of your house,” Suga smiled.

                “We were?!”

Sohyun looked at the man. She was flustered. She wasn’t the one who was choosing the paths that they were taking so she didn’t think it would be the way to her house.

“Not really sure if you moved or something,” Suga replied. But then a thought struck him. He looked at the ground as he gave himself a facepalm, “But you’re living in your apartment now, right? Ugh! I forgot that. Come, let’s take the taxi-”

“No, I actually wanted to sleep in my parents’ place tonight,” Sohyun interrupted. She pointed at the yellow house three houses away from them. “Let’s go.”

The man looked at her then nodded. He was smiling. Sohyun was smiling as well. Somehow, their walk was leading them back to the old times. Well, it had been always like that. The two of them would always walk together in mornings, afternoons, evenings and even midnights. It seemed like they were the two teens from middle school. Like those two people who were too shy about their feelings and such, when they were still innocent of love.

“It has been a long time since I walked you back to your house,” Suga smiled as he looked at the old yellow house. He then soon found his eyes staring at Sohyun. And for some reason, he became kind of flustered. “A-ah, I had so much fun today! It was good seeing you again.”

The man mentally slapped himself. That was just lame and it sounded kind of scripted. But Suga’s worries were washed away when Sohyun smiled at him, “It was good seeing you, too.”

“I was happy too!”

“Yeah, me too.”

“Goodnight then! Goodnight!”

“Have a sweet dream!”

“What? I’m still going to home, you know?”

“Haha, yeah.”

“Bye.”

“Bye.”

Contradicting their words, both of them were not moving an inch from their places. Sohyun was still standing in front of her house. Suga, on the other hand, was still in front of the woman’s house, too.

“Aren’t you going home?”

“Aren’t you going in?”

“Nope, not yet.”

“Then me too.”

The two of them stared at each other and then laughed. Nobody wants goodbyes.

“Yo, can I do something?” Suga asked as he scratched his nape. He looked at the woman as if he’s asking her permission. A permission for what?

Although not knowing as to what the man was even pertaining to, the woman agreed. Maybe he would like to sleep in her house? It’s going to be fine since her parents knew him.

Suga breathed in deeply as he stepped towards Sohyun’s house – wait, stop erase that ‘house’. He stepped towards Sohyun and gave her a hug. The woman could feel herself tense up and blush. Suga’s hug was quite different from a friendly hug. His touch, itself, was different. It was as if he’s holding to something so fragile.

“Wa-”

“Thank you. I hope that we’ll see each other again.”

Before Sohyun could even reply, Suga had let go of her. He was already running away with full speed. He turned around to look at the woman (and goodness does he look bright red) as he shouted, “My number is still in your phone, right?”

“Ah yeah!” Sohyun shouted back. Suga saluted at her. Sohyun then smiled in return.

When Suga’s figure was gone from her sight, she slightly slapped herself. It was asking herself if she’s dreaming or not. But nothing changed. She was still standing in front of her house. She still smelled like Soju. She was still grinning like an idiot. She was still blushing.

She sighed in satisfaction as things like a new start come to her mind. She then looked at the night sky as she cupped her cheeks before entering her house, “Ah, it’s surprisingly hot tonight.”

And it was just her midsummer’s start.
