Silent Kisses

Description

"You're getting married, Park Min-seo to Kim Joonmyeon," Umma smiled at me excitedly during a formal dinner party. How did I react? Well, I didn't. I simply turned back to my unfinished rubbery steak and half-empty champagne glass, and just went along with it, after all, this wasn't the first time this whole "You're Getting Married Business" happened and I didn't mind either way, I simply didn't care about the fact that I'd be shipped away from home to become the link towards the path of wealth and power for my family, and to become a breathing baby factory for a man I just met. A few years back, before Umma and I migrated back to Korea, I was also engaged to a man, Thomas William, a British national just like me, Dad had arranged for us to be married to strengthen our family business back in England, but as I always said, I didn't mind, I was irrevocably in love with the man, in fact. Just as I was to become Mrs. William, Umma had stepped in, got me out of my wedding gown, threw the divorce papers at Dad and hauled me back to Korea.

Now, I had to marry this man, a rich professor's son, and a known celebrity here in Korea. Not that he mistreats me or anything, the guy's an angel, but sometimes, I can't help but remember the life I had left behind in London, the man I had so once pledged my love to, the man who I still yearn for. But can it be, can it actually be that Joonmyeon may as well be my second chance?

Foreword

It's been nearly three years since I came to this place, somehow, I even think it's colder than London. How could I have let that happen? No scratch that. How can something like that happen? How could I have just allowed her to take me away from the life that I was about to build with him?

Wait, I'm getting too ahead of myself. I'm getting too caught up. First, let me introduce myself, my name is Park Min-seo, also known as Opal Smith. But everyone knows ever since I've been ripped away from my home in England, I've been now known as Park Min-seo, because technically Opal Smith had long been murdered, two years ago. Umma always told me, "Seoul is our second chance, darling. It'll be tough at first, I'm not gonna lie, but we have to make do with our situation right now. Thomas would have wanted you to move on, to find someone better than him." Truth be told, I believe that Umma solely stands her ground of getting away from Dad as soon as possible, and finding a new person to support our struggling business. Anyway, going back to me, I'm a college graduate of Applied Corporate Management from the University of London, but don't get me wrong, I'm also a college graduate in BA Hons in Acting from RADA. Dad had always told me to follow my dreams of becoming an actress, but when our company started to go downhill after a mishap with the shareholders and all, Dad was reluctant to make me take a break from auditioning in different companies, and told me to help out our company first. That's when I met Thomas.

Umma hadn't been too keen on Thomas, ever since, since Thomas's family was acquainted with...Dad's mistress. Umma was a bit biased per se, but could I really blame her? Back when I was a child, when I thought that the world was all fun and games, I always saw Umma and Dad doting on each other, just like what a couple in their 20s would do. They were young, powerful, rich, successful and pretty much in love. It was a great time back then, until our company started to go through some potholes, Dad spent more time in the office, trying so hard to save our wealth and power. But amidst his struggle to keep our social status intact, he met a pretty lady, the one I had so gullibly called 'Auntie Monica'. Dad hid it well, though, only telling Umma, after a decade of hiding their affair. Umma never suspected a thing, due to her lovesick eyes and optimistic nature, she trusted Dad...too much. The announcement broke Umma, and shortly after that, Umma had booked us tickets to Seoul, broke off my engagement with Thomas, and flew us away from any possible contact with British soil.

Ever since then, ever since I arrived in Seoul, my life's been nothing but sulking, lately.
