Chapter 15
Armed and DangerousHimchan stood frozen as Sang Hee crumpled to the ground, clutching her side as her blood dribbled through her fingers.
He stumbled back away from Sang Hee as a loud ringing bursted through his ears. His vision started to blur as his fingers began to turn cold.
It was like time stood still.
The only thing that broke him out of his reverie was when the man knocked against his shoulder while running away.
It wasn't exactly like the guy could yank the knife out of Sang Hee's stomach and use it to stab Himchan.
He just ran.
The detective turned to the attacker and watched him run away as he rendered himself unmovable. It was like his whole body just locked up and not a single emotion rose up.
He couldn't lift a leg.
Until he felt someone grab his.
He looked down and felt the colour drain from his face as Sang Hee's bloodied hand grabbed the cuff of his jeans.
"S-." He rasped before dropping down beside her.
He pulled his phone out to call for medical assistance while using his other hand to apply pressure around the knife so no more blood dripped out.
"I have an officer down. I need an ambulance sent to my location.NOW!" Himchan barked before setting his phone on the ground.
"Don't move. Don't move, it'll be fine. Just keep your eyes open." He ordered while using his free hand to pull strands of hair out of Sang Hee's face.
"Get him there." She rasped out.
Himchan scowled, "For 's sake, just shut the hell up."
Sang Hee dropped her head down on the cement and blinked heavily while panting out laboured breaths. She groaned and closed her eyes but Himchan started gently slapping her cheeks.
"No. No, you don't get to do this. Open your goddamn eyes!" He yelled angrily.
Sang Hee felt her lips curl up lightly before she passed out.
-----
"Himchan." He looked up and saw Woon standing in the hallway of the hospital, "I need to speak to you. Now."
Himchan looked back at the emergency room doors unsurely but Chin Hwae nodded, "We got this. Don't worry."
Himchan nodded briskly before following Woon out the doors. The Chief turned to him and let out a breath, "Do you know who could've done this?"
"I have no idea. I didn't get to see his face and doubt she did either." Himchan said while rubbing his eyes.
Woon shook his head, "No you don't understand. Do you know who could've done this?"
Himchan blinked at Woon in confusion until his eyes widened, "You don't think--"
"Chin Hwae told me that the assailant yelled your name out before attempting to assault you. I doubt this has any connection to Jin Ah's case."
"So, what? You think this has something to do with my past?" Himchan balked.
Woon held up a card before tossing it at Himchan, "I doubt this card was addressed to me on accident."
Himchan stared at the postcard that showed the beautiful nightlife of Tokyo before turning it around to read the message.
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean -Shakespeare
Himchan snorted, "You have a subscription to Shakespeare monthly or something? Why are you getting Romeo and Juliet quoted to you?"
"It's not a random card. Check the sender and receiver."
From: ____
To: B.A.P'S Himchan
Himchan's eyes widened and was quick to crumple the postcard in his hand. "What the is this?"
Woon shrugged, "You pissed off more people that Yongguk did. You actually killed people who still have living connections who probably want revenge. That attack could very well be meant as payback had Detective Bae not gotten in the way. I'm thinking someone's either trying to expose you, or trying to call you out."
"That doesn't make sense. We have no living rivals. Ryu was our only one. Yongguk got jumped out, remember? When those gangs took turns beating the out of him, it was because there was an unspoken pact that after jumping him out, they were to have no contact with us. If they didn't honour that pact we had people that could kill them for us." Himchan said while his fists curled at his side.
Woon rubbed his chin thoughtfully, "I'm going to go speak with Yongguk and see what he thinks about this. As of now, you are instructed to stay here until we get further information about Detective Bae."
"What about the case?" Himchan asked in panic.
Woon crossed his arms, "Pass it off to Chin Hwae and Dong Chul. They can come to you if they need help but they're primary on this case."
"So I'm just supposed to wait around?" Himchan scoffed.
Woon's eyes narrowed, "She is your partner, Himchan, and she just jumped in front of a knife for you. The least you could do is stay by her side until she's out of surgery. You don't know how long you'll have her as a partner anyways."
"What is that supposed to mean?" Himchan asked incredulously.
Woon covered his eyes with his hands and took a deep breath, "The Drug Seizure Unit wants her."
Himchan froze and looked up at him, "What?"
"Namjoon came to me today and spoke to me about recruiting Detective Ba--Sang Hee to transfer to the Drug Seizure Unit."
Himchan laughed in disbelief, "Why would they want her? She hasn't worked a day with Drug Crimes. She has no experience what so ever."
"They were impressed with her undercover skill at Club Velvet and they want to bring her on." Woon said simply.
Himchan smiled dryly, "Was it Namjoon's idea?"
"He talked her up to his Chief, so technically, yes." Woon said in defeat.
Himchan scoffed and shook his head, "You know he's only doing this because he's romantically interested in her, right? Not because he genuinely gives a damn about her career."
"That doesn't change the fact that he's right." Woon said simply.
"What do you mean?"
"Her career will go miles if she takes this job. Moving up in DSU is a lot easier than moving up in Violent Crimes. What she can do here in 5 years, she can do in DSU in 6 months if she kept her arrest numbers up." Woon said bluntly.
Himchan smirked, "So you're just going to give her up after going great lengths of forcing her into being partners with me."
"I'm not sure I like your tone." Woon challenged with sharpened eyes.
"Look, I don't care what you do with Detective Bae, but it's sounding less like you actually care about her career and more like you're looking for any excuse to get rid of her. Which makes me believe you're hiding something." Himchan said sardonically.
Woon's jaw was set stiffly before he let out a breath, "Think what you want, but I can't force her to do anything. Once she is notified about the offer, the ball will be in her court and up to her to decide."
"Don't tell her about the offer." Himchan demanded while resting his hands on his hips.
Woon quirked his brow challengingly, "Why?"
"Just not yet. She's not even out of surgery for 's sake." Himchan said in aggravation.
Woon stared Himchan up and down before sighing, "I heard talk."
"What talk?"
"I heard you have a little deal with Detective Bae. She has 2 more weeks before you decide whether you want her as your partner or not. Normally I'd you tell that it isn't your decision to make but in light of new information, I'll strike a deal. I will tell her about the offer at the end of the month after you make your decision about keeping her or not. She can decide if she wants to go to the DSU or not, then." Woon said definitively while crossing his arms.
Himchan smiled wryly, "If I find her helpful I'll tell her to stay and if not, I'll tell her to leave. After that she can decide whatever she wants to do with the DSU. I'm not going to make my decision based on her offer."
"Nor am I asking you to. I just want you to know that just because you don’t want her on your team doesn't mean that others won't either."
Himchan repressed his response and let his eyes dart down the hall, "You seriously think that today's assault had something to do with my past?"
Woon slipped his hands into his pockets before turning away.
"I think you might have enemies that you didn't even know existed."
-----
"They wouldn't say much, but Chin Hwae chatted up a nurse and she said that it looks like Sang Hee is going to be out of surgery soon." Dong Chul said as Himchan leaned against the wall beside him.
Chin Hwae winked with a blank face before shooting finger guns in their directions.
Himchan nodded and let out a breath as he stared at the emergency room door. The last time he was in a hospital was when Ah Young was born.
And way before then Chin Hwae got shot in the line of duty but he had made it out fine, except for some damage in his left lobe.
This was the first time that he was waiting in front of the emergency room for someone that he didn't know well and yet held the guilt and fear of someone who he had known forever.
It was because no matter what the excuses were, she got shot because of him.
If his past was about to catch up with him and put the people he worked with in danger, then maybe it was in everyone's best interest to have Sang Hee take the offer.
He didn't need to deal with the burden of having someone else's life in his hands 24/7. That was his problem since day 1. He didn't want to be responsible for someone else's life but now things had fallen in that exact situation.
He could still hear the loud ringing i
