The Misfit Misadventures
Description
Branded a witch and besieged by brief moments of incredible power, Chaerin is wanted by the Elder Patriarch for questioning and cleansing. Her brother Gunwoo will do anything to make sure that doesn't happen. And Seyong is a victim of circumstance who finds their unpredictable company preferable to a jail cell and an early death. Follow the connected series of oneshots chronicling the lives of the young refugee Gunwoo, his cursed sister Chaerin, and their thief friend Seyong as they try to survive and flourish in the world of Merovia: a land filled with a myriad of potential enemies and allies alike and where things are rarely as they seem.
Foreword
Set in a medieval based fantasy realm, our trio want what any person wants: life, happiness, and some degree of freedom to do whatever they'd like. Unfortunately, none of them are that lucky.
Meet:
Gunwoo - Chaerin's older brother. After the murder of their parents and their subsequent, hurried escape, he vowed to do everything in his power to keep his sister safe, no matter the cost. While not a trained fighter, years of street brawls and alleyway battles growing up have left him scarred, hardened, and good with a dagger. With the Patriarch's forces constantly after them, his resolve has olsolidified, making him a savage force to be reckoned with. Purposefully hard to read and harder still to get close to, he generally only lets his guard down around his sister.
Chaerin - Gunwoo's unfortunate younger sister who should have listened to her brother for once. After touching an item neither of them could identify, she became cursed with a strange power: whenever she is in imminent danger, a force within takes over, granting her unusual power and combat skills otherwise unknown to her. Curiously, her defenses are non-lethal, leaving Gunwoo to tie up loose ends and clean up any messes to prevent them from being followed or put in further danger. It is a fact Chaerin both appreciates and hates, leaving her with much personal guilt over her strange, blackout periods.
Seyong - Born the unwanted son of a tavern wench, he is little more than a common thief. Upon being apprehended and falsely charged with additional crimes, he narrowly avoids an early death by helping Gunwoo rescue his sister from the same prison he is held in. With nothing to tie him to the city where he grew up, Seyong decides to follow the unusual siblings, due to a strange sense of gratitude at having been rescued and his own infernal curiosity. Goodness knows it gets him into trouble enough. But he is not immune to the charms of a pretty young woman - who may or may not be a witch - or the possibility of becoming something more than a two-bit survivor stealing enough to get by but not much else.
Individually, they are little more than an overprotective, older brother with one person left to live for; a cursed, young woman who just wants to be free of the fear and guilt that haunts her; and a thief who wishes to be more than what he is, but is not yet ready to be a hero. Nothing special at all really.
Together, they are misfits. Still nothing worth taking note of in the overall scheme of things, but infinitely more interesting.
Especially when you add in the possibility of pirate encounters, secret islands, grand illusions, and more.
