What about a 'Fans Edition'?

"Untitled...for now"

It's early Autumn, or maybe it's late Summer, it's hard to tell with the temperatures blending together so seamlessly. I'm on my second trip to South Korea. The first time, I was here for just nine days, but in those nine days, I had finally met the woman who proved to be one of my best friends: Ida Simmons, aka, Isak. It was thanks to her that I met the people I'm hanging out with today. Oh, if my fangirl friends back home knew, they would be green with envy!

As we lounge leisurely on a blanket in the grass of Isak's backyard; me on my back with an arm behind my head, just staring aimlessly at the clouds and Unnie's adorable white puppy playing with my bootlaces, I hear a pair of voices to my right and glance over. Amber Liu, the adorable tomboy of Kpop, and the soulful beauty of the stage, Ailee – best friends in their own right – were discussing something about recent promotions as Amber had finished promoting as a solo artist. Eric Nam, who was sitting cross-legged somewhere behind my head so that I had to crane backward to see him, laughed and noted that Amber got a crash course in solo activities.

After a while, the conversation drifted toward Eric's work as a narrator for the Korean Reality show, We Got Married. This, of course, sparked my interest, since I had been a fan of the show since Hongki was on 'Global Edition'. That had fanned the flames of creativity and gave an idea for the show that nearly every fan had considered at least once.

“Hey, Eric?” I posed softly, thinking of how to word my statement in such a way to make the greatest, and most convincing, impact.

“Hey, Snow?” He teased back, leaning forward just enough so that I didn't have to become a contortionist to see him, but didn't have to sit up either.

“I have a question regarding the show...” I began and when he nodded for me to go on, I braced myself for whatever their reactions might be, “Who would the international fanbase need to persuade to make We Got Married: FANS EDITION a thing?”

For a split second, Eric just stared at me like he was still processing what I had just said, but since we were all English speakers, he understood every word. They all did, because a moment later, the entire group was in mixed states of amused hysterics! Even I giggled under my breath, but I didn't relent my eye contact on the boy.

“I love that idea!” Ailee beamed, “It would give fans the chance to see how we really are on a different level than during concerts and fanmeetings.”

“It would be pretty cool, but how would fans be chosen? I mean, celebrities are picked and asked 'Okay, who are your top choices if you were on the show?' then they are paired up based on their schedules and . With fans, there's sooooo many!” Amber noted thoughtfully, flopping onto her side beside me on the blanket.

“I obviously don't know the particulars about how people get picked for it, but because I'm not the first person with this idea, I just kinda took it and ran with it, you know?” I shrugged with a smile, scanning each face before continuing, “You know how fans submit online applications to be a part of Hangout on ASC?” At Eric's hum of agreement, I explained, “It would be similar to that! Fans would submit applications and it would be like drawing a name out of a hat. That way it stays fair to everyone and not just Asian countries get to benefit. No offense intended, but Korea's idea of a 'World Tour' is, frankly, a very small world after all...All of you are from the States, so obviously, Kpop's appeal isn't limited to Asia. So long as the applicants have a valid Passport, I don't see why it can't be done.”

“The idea is a good one, Mama, but not all overseas fans can speak Korean. How would they communicate?” Ida tried to be the voice of reason, and while her concern was a valid one, I was prepared for the question.

“The show is subbed, either during editing, or before it hits the internet. What's the difference from staff subbing the context from Korean to English, or English to Korean? I'm not saying have the entire show in English, because obviously it's not an English show. But to give foreign fans the opportunity to live out a fantasy like this...the ratings would be through the roof! And if it's that much of a concern for the language barrier thing...have the applicants include X number of English-fluent idols, or whatever language they happen to speak, on their application. For instance, if a girl from the States wanted to be on the show, but she doesn't know much Korean, she's not likely to pick celebrities that can't speak a word of English. It would make their WGM experience miserable, right? She'd include people she knows can speak English with her.”

Eric gave this idea some serious thought while I shifted into a sitting position and leaned against Isak's shoulder. After a pregnant pause, the male grinned at me and commented, “You want to be on the show...don't you, Snow?”

My cheeks burned with a dark pink hue, even as I hung my head to hide behind the curtain of black hair, but I nodded all the same, noting in a voice more confident than my physical reaction expressed, “You're damn right I do...”

The four friends laughed and I earned a tight hug from my Isak Unnie when I finally lifted my head to push back my hair out of my face, giving it a final toss to make my bangs fall back into place. Amber was the first to ask the question they were all wondering, “Who would be your number one choice on the show?”

Ida wore a knowing smirk as I answered without an ounce of hesitation, “Cheezy Oppa!”

Everyone but the DJ at my side looked curiously at me, either not knowing who I was referring to, or not knowing why I would choose him of all people, and with such enthusiasm.

“Cheezy is a friend that had a long-running segment on my radio show and part of the group Crispi Crunch. Snow is one of my favorite regular listeners, and she confessed to liking him...what? It'll be...three years, now, right? Yeah. It was so cute! She didn't confess to HIM, though. She sent ME a closed message on the message board, telling me how she liked him a lot, and how it was more than just a celebrity crush, but she didn't want to get rejected because he is a celebrity. I remember you saying you didn't want to get him in trouble by liking him, and that was the most precious thing ever!”

The more the woman revealed about my intense, undying crush on the rapper, the more I silently wished the Earth would open a hole beneath me and swallow me. But...luck and the fates were never that kind to me, so I had to suffer the intense embarrassment of having my not-so-secret secret revealed to three artists that could potentially let this knowledge slip to the man himself. Then, I think, I really might just spontaneously combust.

“He speaks English, right?” Ailee asked, trying to defuse the moment when it became obvious my face could not possibly get any redder without my head actually exploding.

“Yeah. He did our Idol IQ and other Kpop quizzes for a long time.” Isak nodded, my hair in an attempt to calm me down.

“That's really cute, Snow. Did you have any other choices?” Amber wondered, smiling at me and for whatever reason, I couldn't help but imagine her as a kitten in that moment. Maybe it was just the way she had her head tilted and her close-lipped expression, but she looked so cute and it soothed me immensely.

“I have a bit of a list in my head if I, sadly, didn't get my first pick.” I admitted, playing with the ends of my hair. “In no particular order...G-Dragon is on my list, but because he's dating Kiko, that would be awkward and I don't think I'd be able to enjoy it knowing he'd rather be doing the show with her...Hmm...Jay Park! My inner fangirl would be out on display every episode...” Ailee laughed hardest at this revelation, seeing as how she was friends with Jay. “Prince Mak from JJCC would be good. I go into 'Lady Knight' mode every Wednesday to 'Protect The Prince' on Unnie's show.” To this, Isak nodded with a smile. “Sam Carter would be fun. Or Teo...I'd love to play with Teo. He and I are similar.”

“You mean Lunafly's Teo, right?” Eric questioned. He was good friends with Sam, and the British-Korean's self-proclaimed 'stalker', and by extention, knew Teo pretty well, too.

“Yeah! Ever since he took that hiatus from the group, I've missed him a lot. I want to see him smile brightly like he used to.” I replied with a sad smile.

“Anyone else?” Ida prompted.

“Jackson from GOT7! Even though there is a six year there, he is awesome. Plus, I want to gauge my attractiveness by his reaction.” I snickered, remembering his reaction to Gayeon when she dropped by the Roommate house to pick up her gear that had been left behind after the first season of the show.

“Oh, sweetie, you don't need to do that!” Isak interjected firmly, “You're beautiful.”

“I know I don't need to. I want to. I think it'd be funny as hell! Especially since I've been working out since my first visit.”

“I thought you looked more toned, but since you always have a hoodie on, it was hard to tell.” Unnie nodded proudly.

“Is that it then?” Ailee asked sweetly, as if trying to lead my answers in a direction I wasn't aware of.

“Hmm....Well, Lee Jong Suk would be interesting. He's so shy and sweet...” I shrugged, not fully knowing just how fluent he is in English and if we could communicate freely. “Ooo! Moon! Moonchul from Royal Pirates! That would be...” I sighed dreamily, making it as dramatic as possible. “Or if we could drag Kris back from China...Even though Xiumin and Tao are my biases of EXO...but Kris speaks Engli-...err...well, he speaks KRISlish, which I can understand, too, so that works out. If anyone can convince Jaedyn...E.Den...to come back from Canada to be my partner....Yeah, that'd be sweeeet.”

Ailee and Amber giggled at my long list of choices. “At least you aren't limited in your options!” the tomboy beamed.

Eric huffed and folded his arms across his chest, exclaiming in an offended tone, “Why am I not on your list, Snow?! I speak English! I'm speaking English right now! Aren't I your type?”

I couldn't restrain the laughter that bubbled up, and clearly, neither could my other female companions. It wasn't until a few moments later, when she could catch her breath, Ailee noted with a lingering giggle, “She didn't pick you because she has good taste in men!”

Waving my hands frantically and shaking my head, I answered quickly, “No no! It's not that! It's just that I ship NAMber so hard that I couldn't bring myself to sink my own ship by getting fake-married to Mr. Perfect over here!”

Isak was practically rolling on the ground, laughing until her sides hurt. She couldn't speak if she wanted to. Eric looked mildly horrified, Ailee was consumed by a giggle fit, while Amber, though amused, asked, “Dare I ask the other half of that ship?”

“YOU!” came mine and Isak's combined voices, resulting in further laughter.

“Ew!” Amber gasped and leapt to her feet, and launched herself in my direction, howling, “Ew ew ewwwww! No! So weird! He's like my brother, dude!”

“STOP SINKING MY SHIPS! I will ship NAMber forever!!” I shouted, running for my life as Amber darted after me.

...Ah, it was a good day...
