Strangers Under The Mistletoe

"Do you think this is enough food for tonight, dad?" Jinwoo asked, looking at the dinner table jampacked with plates of steaming hot food he had spent all day preparing.

"Jinwoo, if you bake any more cupcakes, we're going to be living in leftovers until February. Put the whisk down and go take a shower, you have to look presentable for all the guests tonight and I don't find you very attractive with your hair covered in flour. I heard some of your cousins are also bringing a friend or two," his dad went over and took the whisk out of Jinwoo's hands, putting it in the kitchen sink. Jinwoo had been in the kitchen for almost 2 days straight, stressing over what foods to make and if there was enough and if certain people liked or disliked some of his dishes. It was driving his father crazy that his son was being so squirrely, he needed him to relax.

Jinwoo simply smiled and nodded towards his dad. He couldn't help it, he loved their annual Christmas dinner and this year was going to be better than last, or so he kept telling himself. So in order to make that goal a reality, he needed to start getting ready. "Okay, dad, I'm going to go and get ready now," he rushed out of the kitchen at the speed of light, the last thing he wanted was to be late to his own party.

Seungyoon was sitting on his bed, guitar in his lap and a notebook with nonsensical lyrics and note clusters scribbled inside of it strewn in front of him. He had been so immersed in writing a new song that he had no idea what day it was. Or at least until his mother came to his room.

"Seungyoon! It's already 3PM! Why aren't you up and getting ready? The dinner party starts at 6 and we are not arriving late again this year, it's embarrassing to be the last family there!" she scolded her son as she continued to brush through her hair. Seungyoon simply looked at her as though he didn't know what she was talking about, which only angered her even more. "Don't tell me you forgot about the dinner tonight. Oh Seungyoon you do this every time! Just get up and start getting ready, we're leaving before 6. No later." And with that she left her son to prepare.

Seungyoon put his head in his hands, "Damn it, why do we have to go to that dinner every year." He wasn't exactly the best when it came to family parties and socializing with everyone there. On the other hand, his cousin Jinwoo was always very friendly. And although he could at times be so modest it seemed shy, he was still very friendly and everyone couldn't help but love him. Plus, he was the host. You can't help but be grateful for the person who made the effort to put the whole event together.

He scrambled out of his bed and over to his nightstand where his phone had been put to charge since the night before but he'd been too lazy to check until now. He looked through the few random notifications he'd gotten and looked for Mino's name in his contacts. After only a few rings, he picked up.

Are you busy tonight? Preferably around 6?

Hey. Merry Christmas to you, too, I guess. But no, I'm not, why?

How would you feel about going to a party tonight?

A party? Tonight? Sure, what should I wear?

I have no idea. Just be here by like 5:30 so my mom doesn't get ticked off again. See you then.

With that, Seungyoon hung up and put his phone back to charge before heading to go take a shower.

~ ~ ~

The Kim household wasn't large but it sure did look extremely festive. There were cute lights decorating the household and stockings hung by the hallway entrance. Jinwoo really wasn't joking when he said that Christmas was his favorite holiday of the year. Mino had never gone to the Kim house on Christmas Eve. Or ever for that matter.

"The decorations are all really nice. Am I dressed nice enough?" Mino suddenly grew doubtful of his purple sweater. His mom had told him he looked cozy so he figured that was a good look for a Christmas dinner...right?

"You're fine, let's just go inside already, Jinwoo always makes really good food, you'll love it." Seungyoon knew just how to get Mino to do as he asked. All he really had to do was mention food to his best friend and he'd be all for it.

Both boys walked in, greeted by the smell of freshly made food and The Barberettes's christmas album lightly playing in the background of everyone's happy coversations. From across the room you could see Jinwoo, happy and laughing while greeting other guests. He was wearing a bright red sweater he had received as a gift the past Christmas along with a big black scarf, looking ever so cozy and snuggly with his fringe looking perfectly unkempt. Mino looked over to the cuddly host and he felt his stomach tie up in knots. He had never seen a boy with such a bright smile before until he saw Jinwoo laughing.

"Hyung, are you okay?" Seungyoon asked when he noticed how red Mino's cheeks had gotten. To which Mino simply nodded, mouth still slightly open in awe of the stranger's good looks. "Um, well, okay then, if you say so. Let's go talk to the host then, I have to introduce my date to him," he added with a cheeky smile and elbow to Mino's ribs. Seungyoon was teasing him in hopes of calming Mino down from whatever was making his face turn so red but it proved ineffective as Mino continued to stare at the bright smile and red sweater across the room.

After a while, Seungyoon finally decided to just grab Mino by the arm and force him to walk forward, or else he was afraid they would be standing there the entire night. Only then did Mino notice that he had been shamelessly staring and felt his face go colorless and then turn a deeper shade of red than what it already had been before. "I am such an idiot," he thought to himself.

"Hey Seungyoon, glad you guys could make it!" greeted Jinwoo in a cheerful voice. His voice sounded like church bells to Mino and he had to try extra hard to not stare at him with his mouth wide open again.

Have to stay calm, have to stay calm, have to stay calm, have to stay calm, have to stay calm, have to stay calm, Mino repeated to himself, hoping to actually calm his rapid fire heartbeat and currently knotting stomach. He had never felt so uneasy when in front of an attractive boy, it made Mino feel extra nervous.

"And this is my bestfriend, Song Minho! Everyone just calls him Mino though," and once again Seungyoon brought Mino back to reality.

He smiled as casually as he could and managed to squeak out a quick "hey" before extending his hand out to Jinwoo.

"What's that for?" Jinwoo nodded at Mino's outstretched hand and giggled. He giggled for Christ's sake, could this boy be any more ideal for Mino? "Put your hand down and give me a hug! I greet all guests this way!" and so the older boy opened his arms, inviting Mino to give him a big hug in light of the holidays.

Mino felt his cheeks go pink once in Jinwoo's arms and nearly cursed himself for it. You were supposed to be acting casual why the hell are you blushing!? he yelled at himself, although he couldn't help it. Being in Jinwoo's arms felt safe and warm and Mino could've practically lived in that exact spot for the rest of his life. It was completely endearing to him how the older boy's head was only barely at his shoulders, making Mino smile at how cute Jinwoo's height is.

After a few seconds, Mino guessed it was time to let go of Jinwoo, in fear of making things awkward within their first encounter. Even then, the hug still seemed to have lasted a few too many seconds too long and Jinwoo couldn't help but feel a little weirded out by the younger boy's sudden display of affection for someone he had just recently met.

"Well, it was great meeting you, Mino! And also so so glad you made it, Seungyoon! You've been here, you know where everything is. Mino," Jinwoo looked over at him, straight in the eye. "If you need anything, feel free to ask. I'm the host and I want to make sure your first Christmas at the Kim household is one to remember!"

By then Mino felt like he had melted into a puddle on the floor. Not only had Jinwoo directly talked to him, he had made direct eye contact and offered his help to Mino, and in the cutest way possible. Dimples showing by the end of the offer as he felt proud of himself for saying something so nice. Mino could only nod and smile, offering a simple "thank you" to Jinwoo for being so kind.

Jinwoo smiled at the two boys and looked around for other guests to greet or introduce himself to, quickly leaving Mino and Seungyoon by themselves again.

"Is it warm in here for you?" Seungyoon placed a hand on Mino's forehead, acting all fatherly for his hyung who seemed to have forgotten how to speak like a normal human being.

"What? No. Why?"

"Well your face is almost as red as Jinwoo's sweater so I thought maybe the heater was on too high and we could go get some ice to cool you down," Mino only blushed even more, now completely aware at how much of an idiot he must've looked to Jinwoo, face as bright as a tomato.

"Shut up, I'm fine. Let's go get some of that famous home cooked food you post on instagram every year when you come here, I'm starving!"

~ ~ ~

It was after dinner and everyone was sitting in the living room, talking to one another about holiday plans and how families were holding up with the sudden drop in temperature this winter. Seungyoon was on his phone, busily checking his twitter and youtube, monitoring the comments on the cover videos he's uploaded and Mino was bored out of his mind. There was no one around his age to talk to and Seungyoon was too entranced by the comments he had gotten to even bother trying to talk to.

He resorted to excusing himself to use the restroom, thinking he could use it to tidy up his hair since he's pretty sure it got worse from him playing with it, something he always does when he gets nervous.

Once in the hallway, he had no idea which door to go into. He settled on the door all the way to the far left, hoping he'd picked correctly. But just as he was reaching for the doorknob, the door swung open.

"Oh! Hey Mino!" Jinwoo was on the other side of the door, which didn't seem to lead to a bathroom in the first place. "Were you looking for something?"

Mino was caught completely off guard, he had no idea what to do. He wanted Jinwoo to stay and talk to him but he didn't know how, and he was freaking out so bad that he couldn't hear anything besides his own kick drum heartbeat. "Um, yeah, I was. I was, uh, I was looking for you!" Mino almost couldn't believe what he had just said. Come on Mino, is that really the best you could come up with? he thought to himself, resisting the urge to hit himself upside the head for letting those words come out of his mouth.

Jinwoo's eyes went a bit wider and he tilted his head, a slight flush of pink rising to his plump cheeks. "Oh, um. Me? You were looking for me? Why is that?"

"I just wanted to, you know...Say hi. I was, um... I was a bit awkward the first time we talked earlier and I didn't want to go home today having left that sort of impression on you," he began to nervously rub at the back of his neck, feeling his cheeks heat up for the millionth time that night.

Jinwoo simply smiled and said, "No it's fine, Mino! You seem like a really cool guy! First meetings are always a bit awkward. Plus, I thought what you're wearing looks really good on you, I forgot to tell you that earlier." With that being said, Jinwoo looked down and played with his hands for a couple of seconds before looking back up at Mino, with eyes so wide and innocent, Mino nearly felt his knees give out.

"Oh! What's this!" Jinwoo looked up at the door frame they were both standing under. It looked to be a mistletoe. "This is the door to my room, I wonder who put that there..?" Jinwoo continued to stare at the mistletoe, confused over its origin.

Mino looked up at the mistletoe and then down at Jinwoo, who was still eyeing the decoration with skeptical eyes. He was so adorable that Mino nearly wanted to pick him up and take him home the way he would with a cute stuffed animal.

Wait... We're under a mistletoe... This could only mean... Mino's eyes widened a bit before he tried to even his breathing. Okay, this is my chance. I can't screw this up, this might be the only time I get lucky enough to be under the mistletoe with someone this perfect.

"Well," Mino began, automatically snapping Jinwoo out of whatever confused daze he had been in while staring at the mistletoe. "You know what they say about mistletoes, right? How if two people are caught under one, they have to kiss or else it's like, bad luck or something for the next year"

Jinwoo's cheeks reddened but he laughed brightly at the younger boy anyways. "I guess you're right. But you and I are under this mistletoe together. That means we'd have to kiss, doesn't it?"

Mino's heart was beating a million miles a minute and he felt all the color drain from his face. Saying it outloud and so casually like that only added to Mino's nerves. "I, um, I guess it does"

Jinwoo smiled and looked up at Mino, "Alright then, but no funny business! We only just met a few hours ago, remember?" His laughter was one of the sweetest things Mino had ever heard.

He saw Jinwoo close his eyes and start to stand on his tiptoes and Mino's heart melted at how Jinwoo's feathery eyelashes looked on his porcelain cheeks. He leaned down and gently placed a kiss on the older boy's lips, feeling as though he could die happily then and there. It was almost as though his whole fifteen years of life were nothing compared to this exact moment, which had just automatically made its way to the top of his imaginary "best moments of my life" list.

"Hyung?" Mino whispered onto Jinwoo's lips, afraid to get too far apart from the older boy's face, wanting to cherish the moment for even longer.

"What is it, Mino?" Jinwoo hummed, making Mino's heart melt even more than it already had that night.

"Your lips are really soft," he could feel Jinwoo grinning on his lips and that simple motion drove Mino mad.

"Not nearly as wonderful as yours, babe"

~ ~ ~

The party was over and Mino, Seungyoon and his mom were heading out to the car, having said "goodbye" and "thank you for inviting us" to everyone in the house. Mino had been smiling from ear to ear for well over an hour now and it was starting to creep Seungyoon out.

"Ey, hyung, why're you smiling so much?" he finally asked, side eyeing Mino for acting so strange.

"Ah, it's nothing, Yoonie, don't worry" he sighed happily once more and smiled up at the night sky.

But Seungyoon knew Mino better than that. He was obviously not telling him something. But he definitely was not expecting what was about to come out of Mino's mouth.

"Hey, Seungyoon?" Mino looked over at his bestfriend, smile just as big as it had been for the latter half of that night. "How would you feel if I ever started to date your cousin, Jinwoo?"
