Our life

When everything just went perfectly as planned, it certainly felt like nothing could go wrong. But that wasn’t the case. No matter how much you’re at the top, you’re going to end up at the bottom of the wheel somehow. That’s how Victoria sees life.

The life that has cheated on her before.

The life that gave her empty promises and tore her apart into bits and pieces.

Changmin was her life.

And forever is.

The breeze blew nonchalantly on that day, which seemed like a perfect day for picnic. Grabbing the golden opportunity, Changmin grabbed his phone and dialed. He waited for the individual at the end of the line to pick up.

“Hey Changmin”

He grinned. “Hey Vic, I was wondering if you want to clear up your mind, take a little break from your hectic work and have a little escapade with me to the park. I’ll bring the sandwiches that you like so much”. Please say yes. Please say yes…

He could hear her chuckles from the other side. “Well Mr. Shim if that’s your way of asking me on a date, I’m glad to”. Changmin raised his fist up in the air, a sign of victory. “Yes!”

Changmin and Victoria have been just friends for too long. He has been with her since childhood, witnessed every break-ups that the girl had went through, lent his shoulders and ears every time his beloved childhood friend needed him. He didn’t know that slowly, he has fallen heads over heels for her and realized it when he saw Victoria’s ex-boyfriend kissed her on the cheek.

He has never met any of the girl’s boyfriends to be honest, so watching their affection in front of him boiled him up. When Victoria was no longer in any relationship, he grasped the chance to finally ask her out. It took him months though, but it was totally worth the effort. She said yes… She finally said yes… And that moment is the happiest for him in his life.

Meanwhile in the office, Victoria quickly put away her things and fixed her make up.

“Up for another date, I see?” said Seohyun who was sitting right next to her cubicle. “So where to this time?”

Victoria let out a wide grin and shrugged. “The weather’s nice and he’s bringing my favourite sandwiches, so I’m guessing a picnic in the park”

Both of them laughed.

Victoria looked around the park, trying to find that certain someone but to no avail. He was nowhere to be seen. She let her hair down and glanced over her watch when suddenly an arm wrapped her from behind. She couldn’t help but to let out a soft squeal no matter how many times he has done this before.

“Do you know how beautiful you looked with your hair down from behind?” whispered Changmin softly.  Victoria turned around so that she can have a better view of him.

“You scared me there, you know. Plus, I have been waiting for you for ages.”

“Nu-uh. You have been standing at this spot for approximately 5 minutes only.”

“Maybe you should search what exaggeration is, Shim Changmin”, she laughed before continued. “And it seems like you’re keeping me waiting on purpose”.

Changmin smiled sheepishly. “I couldn’t help but to stare at my princess’ beauty for 5 minutes. And I have always been right behind you”.  He took her hand and guided her towards an open space.

The looked around a bit before sitting down on the bare grass, setting everything up.

“As promised, le sandwiches to milady”, said Changmin as he took it out from the basket, following another special surprise for her. “I don’t know what girls usually do with this, but I really hope you like it”, he said afterwards as he handed her two roses.

“Awh… you don’t have to do this you know”, she commented but still gladly accepted the flowers. “Girls are a very unique species. Sometimes, we like something without any reason at all”.

“Women”

“Men”

Both of them shook their heads and laughed. Their day went as usual. Victoria telling her experience on working with clients who just got back from Africa and gave her lots of gifts, an old client who constantly say that he’s only doing business with her because she looked like his ex-wife when they were younger, and Changmin listening eagerly to her stories, not forgetting to add some side comments along the way.

Honestly, Victoria didn’t quite know how Changmin came to favour her. She has always taken an interest in him ever since they were little but she didn’t want to jeopardize their friendship. And so she learnt to move on; date someone else by the mean of having Changmin by her side, always. But her action created a deep scar in her heart.

Due to the incompatibility with other guys, she experienced break ups pretty often; causing her to feel traumatized of relationships. She knew all along that it will come to this, for no man can understand her better than Changmin did.

And when Changmin confessed, when he did, her hearts leapt out of joy and anxious at the same time. What if this doesn’t work out? What if Changmin is not the one? But seeing his calm face eased her a little.

Give life another chance…

Give me a chance…

That’s what he said… And she gave in.

And since then, Changmin has brightened up her days and cheer her up with his pranks and romantic acts. Not that he didn’t before, her guilt for loving him before just disappeared knowing that he did that for her; and only her.

Victoria watched soullessly the figure in front of her. She could shed no more tears as she had cried all day. Changmin surely wouldn’t want to see her like this. Even though he can never see her again, at least she can do is to keep her promise to him.

He deserves better…

It shouldn’t end like this…

It’s always you who took care of me. Now it’s my turn…

Wait for me,

Changminnie…

Changmin looked around aimlessly. Where is he anyway? He didn’t feel like himself and felt like he was floating in thin air. His eyes shifted down, looking at his hands; His translucent hands.

What happened actually to him? He didn’t quite know himself.

“Am I dead?”

“Changmin!” He turned when he heard someone called his name before curving his lips. There she is, his very own angel standing right in front of him. No more sad pools in her eyes and her face was glowing in happiness. She was translucent as well, just like him.

“What happened to you? Are we dead?” he asked as he wrapped his arm around her petite waist. His eyes kept on examined her; she was smiling so happily as if nothing bad ever happened to her.

“And why are you so happy?” he said, smiling.

“I believe I tried to save you by going through the surgery but it ended up like this. Both of us being dead an all”, she shrugged coolly. “But hey at least we’re together now, right?” she continued. Victoria rested her head on his chest.

“Yeah... together and forever. Nothing can come in the way anymore. You’re mine, always”

“But there’s something that intrigues me though”

Victoria raised her head and looked at him straight. “What is that?”

“If we’re dead, why am I still hungry?”

“Gosh Shim Changmin you must be bluffing. How is that even possible right now?” she laughed.
