Two Years

The Long Wait

IT has been two years since their last meeting, and not even once from that time, she ever forgets him.

He’s been on her mind, throughout the day, throughout the weeks, throughout the months and even after this whole two years.

There were no goodbye between them and it was all her fault.

“Youngji, can we meet for a moment?” he said as soon as she picked up the call.

“What is it about?” she asked him.

“Something important which I can’t talk over the phone,” he replied.

“I can’t, Jackson. It’s already past midnight. Let’s just talk about this tomorrow, alright?” she said and quickly ended the call as she heard footsteps coming towards her room.

“Youngji, it’s past midnight already. What are you doing talking on the phone? Don’t you have class tomorrow?” she heard her father nagging.

She kept shut and forced herself to sleep.

The next day, she ran to her class and waited for Jackson. She waited and waited, but he didn’t appear.

She thought of waiting some more when she suddenly heard her classmates talking to each other about Jackson.

“He left last night, I saw a taxi in front of their house and they brought their luggage together,”

“It must have been hard for him, because of his father’s work, he had to move around this country a lot,”

“I pity Youngji, it must be hard for her. They're together and suddenly he’s gone,”

She quickly get up from her seat and headed towards them.

“What do you mean he left?” Youngji asked while stuttering.

“He didn’t tell you? He had to follow his dad again,” Hara said while looking at her apologetically.

Youngji surely didn’t expect this as she fell on her knees upon Hara’s confirmation.

She blamed herself for that night. If only she had sneaked out from her house to meet him, they’ll definitely have a proper goodbye. If only she met him, she’ll be able to let him know how much she wants him to stay, she’ll tell him that she’ll wait for him to come and meet her again no matter how long it’ll take.

IT’S almost 10 when Youngji finally closed her cafe. She recently moved to the new town and opened up her own cafe, in order to help her forgets him. She knows it won’t work but her family insisted as they couldn’t stand looking at her wandering around the neighborhood every single day and cried whenever he came into her mind.

She arrived at her apartment and locked the door. She heard the phone rang and answered the call, her mother is on the other line. She told her mom briefly about her day before she hung up the call.

She walked towards the balcony of her apartment, reminiscing back the time when they were in school.

"Youngji-ah, look at this," he called her as he showed her his martial art talent.

"You said you're going to teach me but you're only showing off," she said.

"You might hurt your body, so you should only watch me," he replied as he poked her cheeks.

"Youngji-ah, I like you. I like you more than as friends. I am in love with you. I am in love with your alligator laugh, I am in love with your cheerful personality, I am just crazily in love with you," Jackson said as he handed her a bouquet of flowers.

She took the flowers and without a word she planted a kiss on his cheeks before her own cheeks turned crimson red.

"I'll take that as a yes then," he said and she just laughed at him while nodding her head.

"I think Taecyeon sunbae is really cool," Youngji said to Jackson on their way back home.

He stopped and threw a deadly stare at her.

"I mean, he's cool. But it doesn't mean anything else," Youngji replied as she tried to control her laugh.

"Yes, Hara sunbae is also the prettiest girl I've ever seen," he replied as he walked past her.

Youngji just let out her silent laugh and ran after him.

"You're still the most special guy in my heart," she said as she pecked him on the cheek and held his hand tightly.

She was caught in her memories. The old memories that seems like it won't ever go away.

She was about to go back inside her apartment when she saw a drunk guy trying to make his way towards the apartment.

She would usually just shrug it off and ignore it but something about that guy made her look for a longer time. It was then when she recognized that the guy looks familiar to her eyes. She waited and see, and not long after that, the guy lost his balance and fell at the sidewalk. He leaned his body at the wall, which makes her see his face.

It’s him.

Jackson.

She didn’t wait and dashed out from her apartment, running towards him. Right when she got in front of him, she couldn’t help it but cried seeing him in this condition.

“Jackson,” she whispered while patting his cheeks softly, trying to wake him up.

He opened his eyes slowly, gaze fixed on her.

“You must not be her, this must be another hallucination,” he whispered as he closed his eyes again.

“Heo Youngji, why do you have to do this to me? Why it seems like you’re everywhere but I can’t even find you once I wake up,” he whispered again, now tears escaped from his shut eyes.

“It’s been two years for God’s sake, and yet I still think about her, every single day without missing. I miss her a lot, I want to see her,”

She cried harder as she heard those words from his mouth. She difficultly tried to help him stand and pulled him to her apartment.

“If only I told her how hard it is to leave her,”

“If only she came to meet me, I might stay instead of saying goodbye,”

She helped to get him on the bed and left him alone in the bedroom, not being able to listen to his mumblings anymore which only made her heart breaks even more. She fell asleep on the sofa, with tears traces down her cheeks.

JACKSON woke up with a massive headache, the result of the drinks he had last night. It’s normal for him, he had it a lot, especially during the days when he can’t help but thinking about her.

He stood up and realized that he’s not in his bedroom. The place seems so unfamiliar to him, but the scent reminds him of someone. Someone that really makes him go crazy.

He turned to the bedside table, and saw a frame, and to his surprise, it is his own picture with her.

It was the first picture they took together, and the only person having those pictures will only be him and her.

Trying to pull it all together, from the person he saw last night that he thought was his hallucination, to the bedroom and the picture, he ran outside of the bedroom and looked for her. It’s no doubt that it’s Youngji. It was her scent, and there’s their picture together.

He saw a figure lying on the sofa and he didn’t wait as he walked in front of the sofa, only to see the face he’s been wishing to see throughout these two years apart.

He couldn’t help himself as he softly caressed her cheeks which wakes her up. She opened up her eyes, meeting his eyes and silence took over the situation.

“I miss you,” he finally said.

“I miss you more,” she replied.

He pulled her into a tight hug, and he felt her tightened the hug even more.

“Jackson, I’m sorry for that night. If only I knew, I would definitely come and meet you,”

“I’m sorry too, for not telling you that I’m leaving. I don’t want to make you cry and I don’t have the courage to tell you about it,”

“I won’t leave you anymore, please stop crying,” he said as he pulled away from the hug and wiped her tears away.

“I thought you’ve already forgotten about me,” Youngji said.

“How could I. There’s not even one second that you ever left my mind,”

“Even when you’re drunk,” she replied and laughed without any sound; her signature laugh.

“I miss your alligator laugh so much, I miss you, Youngji,” he replied as he cupped her face and kissed her.

Afterall, it was worth the wait for the two of them.
