Chapter 17

Hope and Chances

"Morning sleepyhead." Yongguk murmured and kissed your cheek.
You started to open your eyes and shifted on the bed but then froze. A wave of nausea slammed in to you and you squeezed your eyes tightly shut.
"I brought you breakfast in bed." he continued.
You felt the bed dip as he sat down. This caused your body to rock a little and you swallowed to keep the building nausea down.
"Could you please eat a little." he quietly begged, placing a hand on your back. He rubbed your back a little but instead of soothing you, it only made everything worse until you couldn't take anymore.
You quickly threw the blanket off of you and jumped out of bed. Then you bolted for the bathroom, ignoring the surprised yell from your husband.
As soon as you were by the toilet, you kneeled down just as you vomited. Stomach acid spilled from your mouth and left a nasty taste behind. During it all, you felt Yongguk holding your hair back for you.
When it was over, you spat in to the toilet one last time before standing up. Your legs shook a little as you flushed and then made your way to the sink.
"Are you okay? What's wrong?" your husband worriedly asked.
You the faucet and washed your mouth out before splashing water on your face. Then you turned the faucet off and grabbed the hand towel.
"Honey." Yongguk softly whined.
You glanced at his reflection in the mirror and rolled your eyes. "It's only morning sickness." you declared. "You don't have to suddenly care about me."
As soon as the words left your mouth, you couldn't help but feel a little guilty. Especially when you saw the hurt look in your husband's eyes.
Closing your eyes, you took a deep breath. "I'm sorry." you mumbled and put your hands on the counter to lean on them.
"I care about you." he quietly said. "Even when I'm mad, wrongfully mad, I still care. Just because you're mad doesn't mean you stop caring."
You felt him step closer to you, his breath on the back of your neck. Then you felt his hand sliding over your left hand before playing with your wedding ring.
"That's why I made you breakfast and you made me dinner." he whispered and rested his head on your shoulder. "I will always care about you."
Your heart fluttered and you rapidly blinked your eyes to stop them from watering. "I... I know... I just..."
Yongguk shifted his head and kissed your shoulder before pulling away. "We can stop the adoption."
You inhaled sharply and your eyes widened in shock. You quickly turned around to stare at him. "What??"
He pressed him lips together and swallowed. "We... we can stop." he said in a shaky voice, telling you how hard it was for him to say those words.
You blinked at him in disbelief. "You said the other day that we were going through with it no matter what." you countered.
One side of his lips tugged upwards in a sad half-smile. "That was Yongguk. Husband Yongguk said we can stop whenever it became too much for you." He stepped closer and brought his hands up to cup your cheeks. "If it's too much, tell me." he sincerely pleaded. "I'll listen this time. I promise."
You bit your bottom lip, not sure how to respond. So rather than answering him, you said "You're going to be late for work."
He bit his lip before nodding. He went to step away but stopped. Then he hesitantly leaned forward and kissed your forehead. "I love you."
As he walked away, you swallowed and quickly followed him to the bedroom. "I love you too." you hurriedly declared.
He stopped and turned back to you, a little surprised. But a tiny smile formed on his face before he left the room.
You felt a little bit of relief but it was quickly overshadowed by more nausea. Grumbling, you shuffled over to the bed and laid down. You curled in to a bowl and glared at your stomach. "Knock it off and just come out already."

You lazily spent the rest of the morning in bed, thankful when the nausea finally went away. You also couldn't help but silently wish that it would permanently go away soon.
The sound of footsteps stirred you out of your thoughts and you rolled over to see Jaewoo by the edge of the bed.
"I'm hungry." he whined with a little pout.
You glanced at the clock before taking a deep breath and slowly letting it out. Then you slipped out of the covers and off the bed.
You went to the kitchen and grabbed the bread to make him a sandwich. You started to pull the turkey out of the fridge when Jaewoo suddenly spoke up, "I want peanut butter and jelly."
Nodding silently, you set the turkey down and grabbed the jelly instead. You made him the requested sandwich and then grabbed the box of cheese crackers. As you poured them on to the plate, only a few came out. You shook the box and noticed it was empty before tossing it in the trash.
"I'll get you more cheese crackers at the store tomorrow." you stated as you put the plate on the table.
Jaewoo glanced up and looked at you but you quickly turned away. You headed out of the kitchen and down the hallway. You went to your bedroom but stood in the doorway. You stared at the bed for a moment before sighing. Then you continued down the hall to the workroom.
You sat at your desk and turned your computer on. As soon as it was loaded, you went to your email and saw all the unread messages you had. You started with the bottom one and began to work your way through them.

After a few hours, you closed your email and leaned back in your chair. You let out a heavy sigh, thankful to be finally done. Resting your head on the back of the chair, you turned your head to look at the clock. It was about time for you to cook dinner.
You remembered back to this morning and how Yongguk said you both cared about each other no matter what. That you were still taking care of each other and he had made your favorite last night. So you decided it was a ramen night.
You rolled your head in the other direction and glanced at the doorway. Then you jumped a little and sat up real fast. Jaewoo was peeking around the corner and in to the room.
"What is it?" you asked in surprise.
He hesitated for a bit before shuffling into the room. He came over to your desk and silently held up a piece of paper. On it were several flowers drawn in different colors.
You stopped breathing as your mouth dropped open a little. You slowly reached out and carefully took the picture from him. You could tell by looking at it, he drew each flower meticulously. With straight stems and perfect petals that were all the same size. Not something you would expect from such a young child.
"Lets hang it on the fridge." you declared and stood up.
You left the room and went straight for the kitchen. You went to the fridge and rearranged a few things that were on it. You put the picture in the middle of the freezer door and made sure it was secure with magnets before letting it go.
Taking a step back, you admired the new artwork. You looked down a Jaewoo who had followed you to the kitchen though and frowned. He was staring at the picture with a very confused look.
"What?" you questioned and glanced at the drawing before looking back at him. "Haven't you had anything hung on the fridge before?"
"No." he quietly said. Then he looked down and muttered, "Cause it's stupid."
You raised your eyebrows in surprise and quickly looked back at the picture. Yet another thing you weren't expecting from him. Especially with how well done it was. Aren't most kids older before they start criticizing their work? "Unless... someone said it to him."
Pressing your lips together, you turned and knelt down in front of him. He gave you a puzzled look but before he could run away, you wrapped your arms around him. Instantly you heard him sharply inhale and felt him stiffen but you didn't let go.
"It's not stupid, it's beautiful." you firmly proclaimed. "Thank you Jaewoo."
When you pulled back, he stared at you in shock. You couldn't help but smile a little at his cute expression. "I was planning on making ramen for dinner. Does that sound good?"
He scrunched up his face and stuck his lips out. Then he looked down at the ground. "I don't like ramen that much." he mumbled.
You quickly pressed your lips together to stop yourself from letting out a tiny chuckle. "Then what do you like?"
He peered up at you and chewed on his bottom lip. "Rice." you quietly confessed.
"Rice." you echoed before humming thoughtfully. "Then... how about boiled chicken and fried rice?"
His eyes widened and he eagerly nodded his head.
"Alright then." you said with a soft smile and stood up. You opened the freezer door and pulled out some chicken before taking it to the microwave to defrost it.

Dinner was just about finished when you heard the front door open. You stirred the rice one last time and lowered the heat to keep it warm.
"Hey."
You turned around and saw Yongguk in the doorway. As he walked over to you, he handed you the bouquet of flowers he was holding. "These are for you." he said with a shy smile.
You took the offering and felt a blushing smile form on your face. "Thanks." you told him. "But you're a little late."
The smile on his face immediately disappeared, causing you to chuckle. "Someone already gave me flowers." you elaborated and indicated the fridge.
He turned his head and you watched his eyes widen in surprise. Then he quickly looked back at you. "Did he...?"
"Yeah." you replied, smiling. "And apparently, he likes rice more than ramen." you added and indicated the food on the stove.
Yongguk glanced at the food and he amusingly smiled. "I can cope with that." he commented.
You chuckled and looked down at the flowers in your hands. "Good." you declared before looking back up at him. "Because even when you're mad at someone, you still care." you said.
The smile faded away as he looked at you curiously.
"So we're going to have rice with dinner more often." you continued. "Cause I still care."
He gently pushed your arms aside and stepped closer to you. He hugged you tightly, burying his face in your neck. "I know you care." he murmured. "I know you care a lot and I am so, so sorry."
You wrapped your arms around his neck, being careful with the flowers. "And I know you just really wanted everything to be perfect too."
He squeezed you tighter before pulling back enough to kiss you with his soft lips. Your heart fluttered and you eagerly kissed him back. When you broke away, both of you gasped for air.
"Hyung." came a quiet voice.
Yongguk stepped back from you as he turned around. Jaewoo was peeking around the edge of the doorway.
"Hey." your husband happily greeted as he knelt down. "Do I get a hug from you too?"
The little boy hesitated before running into the kitchen and over to the older male. Yongguk wrapped his arms around him in a hug before letting go but Jaewoo stayed close to him. Practically attached to him like always.
"I'm hungry." Jaewoo whined.
"Oh, it's done." you hurriedly said and glanced at the food.
"Here." offered Yongguk and took the flowers from you. He found a vase for them while you dished out the food and then he helped you carry the plates to the table.
As soon as you put Jaewoo's plate in front of him, he instantly started taking big bites of the rice.
"Is it that good?" Yongguk inquired with a big grin.
Jaewoo enthusiastically nodded his head before eating again. Both of chuckled and then glanced at each other. He reached over and put a hand on your hand, squeezing it a little. You squeezed his hand in return and then you both started eating as well.
