Ribbon of Dreams

All that could ever go through Choi Seunghyun's head was the memory of the boy he once loved, in fact he still loves him. Living alone in an small apartment of Seoul, he spends at least an hour gazing into the night sky. Each night, every night, he looks out the window at 10pm exactly and he goes back inside at midnight on the dot. It was a always a ritual for him. He has never once missed a day and never plans to. Gazing into the sky and seeing the stars makes him feel as if the one he loved was still around, but he knows his love is waiting for him. He just knows. The tiny red ribbon he treasures more than anything else is physical proof of the love he wishes to reclaim.

*~Flashback~*

"Seunghyun, come eat now! It's time for dinner!" the youthful woman called from the other room to get her son's attention. Soon enough within seconds, a young man of 16 years of age appeared in the kitchen with a wide grin. He looked and saw a pot on the stove and went to the cabinet to pull a bowl down for each them and set them at the small table for two in their living room. He even brought a heating pad and the pot with a ladle so they could enjoy their meal in the living room with only the company of the other.

He guided his mother to take a seat and make herself comfy on the couch with a hot bowl of army stew as he proceeded to occupy the seat net to hers. He grew up without his father who lost his life in the line of duty from some sort of freak accident. He was an only child and he had the misfortune of having an attraction only to men. His mother knew his ual orientation from the time he hit puberty, mainly from the fact the boy never talked about having any female friends, but would talk about how perfect a new guy friend he made was. As they sat on the couch, she turned to her son with a gentle smile.

"Seunghyun, did you know there is finally a new family here?" she asked the male in a gentle tone. His brow furrowed as he listened to her question but shrugged.

"We always get new families here, no one ever sticks around" he scoffed lightly, drawing a chuckle from his mother.

"But this is the first one to have a boy your age Seunghyun~" she finished, masking the smirk that wanted to etch into her face as she watched his eyes widen in interest. He was open to his mother about his attraction to his own gender, but it's still embarrassing to have your mother point out possible lovers. He couldn't help but wonder if the the new boy in the apartments was cute, and if so, homoual. He stopped eating his food as his mind wandered into a dreamy realm of all the possible looks this boy could have. He resumed eating as his mother cleared , effectively gaining his attention as well as his irritation at her proud knowing smirk. He resumed eating the army stew with flushed cheeks, embarrassed at his mother's reaction. Dinner went by quietly and smooth, other than his mother giving him a mischievous glance once in a while.

"Umma, I'm going to go to bed now" he announced as his mother sat at her desk in the corner of the living room. He glanced up to the cuckoo clock hung on their wall, seeing the time as 9:54 pm. He had to hurry or his nightly routine would be off and would serve to make the boy uncomfortable the next day. His mother bid him goodnight and let her son retire to his bedroom. She knows the routine he has is her fault, seeing as she had it as a child, but it wore off as the years went on. She knows it's soothing to a child, so she told him when he was young about a story of seeing the face of the one you love in the night sky. If you look into the stars for one hour every night, you will find your love doing the same as you.

Since then, Seunghyun retreats to his room and opens the window at exactly 10pm and closes it at 11pm so he could sleep on the fact that another day went by without finding the one he loved. So just like every other night, he brought a chair up to the window and opened it wide, gazing longingly into the starry night sky.

His mind wandered to if he would ever find a man he could truly love, but as he got lost in his thoughts, a voice filled the air that was gentle but had an edge to it. Seunghyun couldn't pinpoint where it came from, but he listened to it for so long that he went nearly a half hour past curfew. When the voice stopped singing, he heard the sound of a window shutting and shut his as well, a sense of loneliness washing over him as he was taken in by slumber.

The Next Day

Seunghyun woke the next morning in a funk from the mysterious angelic voice that flitted through the air the previous night, but today was laundry day and he knew he had to get going on it or else they wouldn't have enough money to do their laundry next week. He got up and gathered both his an his mother's laundry and took them in a wicker basket down to the apartment laundry rooms, but as he got closer, he stopped in his tracks just out side the  laundromat.

That voice...the one he heard the night before was carrying through the door, faint yet strong to Seunghyun's ears. He stood outside the door as long as he could, but he just had to see the vessel that held such a gorgeous sound. He slowly opened the door with his foot, thankfully going unnoticed by the lone person in the room dancing around while folding some clothes.Seunghyun took a washer and dryer a row behind the mystery person so he could study them, while easily pretend he was actually doing clothes.

As his eyes scanned the rather exposed skin, he took notice of the lack of curves but forms of muscles in many places. His eyes scoured every inch of the male in front of him, immediately feeling a sense of attraction and infatuation as he fumbled to get the laundry separated correctly. His klutzy nature caused him to knock the basket on to the floor with a clatter and immediately crouched down in hopes the other didn't hear it. What Seunghyun hadn't expected was to stand up with the basket only to have said male standing directly behind the washer facing him.

He noticed the boy's face seemed a bit pink, but all Seunghyun could do was stare at the boy. His eyes scanned every single feature of the shorter male's head, from his bright pink hair down to the smooth skin of his Addams apple. He finally quit checking out the boy and made eye contact and their gazes were so strong, it would send any person away if they walked in on such an intense moment. They both seemed to be lost in other's gaze, neither uttering a word or even making a sound. It was the boy that took the first initiative.

"H-Hi...I-I'm Kwon Jiyong....I'm new here...." his soft tone surprised Seunghyun considering the voice that sung such beautiful songs was strong and confident. He had no idea how to respond but just said whatever came to mind.

"umm..I-I really like your singing!" Seunghyun blurted out and instantly regretted it as the boy's face enflamed and burst into laughter.

"Hahaha....w-wow...thank you very much!" the boy tried to speak as  his laughing fit calmed down, leaving Seunghyun confused at the moment.

"O-oh, god s-sorry...I'm Choi Seunghyun. I am not new here" he grinned as his confidence built up as the boy seemed to be the playful type. They couldn't seem to keep their eyes off each other even when the washer quit making noise and it fell totally silent. Finally Seunghyun looked down and knocked himself in the head when he realized he let the washer wide open and hadn't even started his first load "Aish...damn bingu..." he huffed under his breath and hurried to put the articles of clothing in all at once in one big load. Jiyong looked on with raised eyebrows at the odd way of washing clothes as Seunghyun put in the clothes first, yet forgot to start the washer. "Damnit.." he scoffed at his stupidity and turned the water on and poured in the soap.

"Seunghyun~?" a voice chirped out as he closed the washer, almost hitting his head on the lid in response to the voice. He chuckled and looked at the boy with a grin.

"Y-yes Jiyong?" he tilted his head a bit in question of the other.

"Umm..would you mind if I could maybe come over today?" the boy shyly asked as he nervously played with his fingers, awaiting an answer from the other. He got his answer in the form of a bright smile and an repeated aggressive nod of the head from Seunghyun.

That Night

As soon as the boys had gone their separate ways, Seunghyun hurried to put the clothing away and get their tiny place sit enough to have a guest. His mom will be ecstatic since Seunghyun, has never brought a friend over to their tiny place. He was always ashamed that he lived paycheck to paycheck and his mother worked jobs just to support them and keep their few nice things running.

Seunghyun got everything nice and cleaned up and within half an hour, Jiyong showed up at his door. He knew it wasn't his mother since the 'secret knock' wasn't what he heard. He called for the identity of the person on the other side, glad to get confirmation that it was in fact his guest. He opened the door quickly and immediately invited Jiyong in. Jiyong looked around and blinked at the space and grinned warmly.

"Your place looks so cozy" he spoke as he waked over to the sofa and took a seat.

"If cramped is cozy for you, then you got that one right" Seunghyun chuckled lightly and took a seat next to Jiyong. He sat within a cushion length away, too scare to get so close after having just met. Once again, they settled into a silence, but this time it was a comfortable silence that neither seemed to mind. Well, not that anyone would mind being checked out by such handsome men. As soon as one would catch the other looking, both pairs of eyes would turn back to their laps and smiles a bit as grew into a game of fleeting touches and fits of playful laughter.

They were having so much fun that both Seunghyun and Jiyong hadn't heard the door open up until Seunghyun's mother made her presence known.

"Seunghyun, I'm home!" both boys jolted in surprise at the random voice, but Seunghyun laughed heartily and responded to her quickly.

"Umma, come here! There's someone I would like you to meet" he shifted his gaze to Jiyong and beamed to him happily, getting one in return. The woman came into the room and smiled brightly as she saw the boy sitting next to Seunghyun. Jiyong's eyes lit up as he saw her and went up to her with joy while Seunghyun sat by in surprise.

"Ahjumma Choi~! Wow it's been such a long time, I can't remember the last time I saw you!" the boy embraced the woman a very friendly fashion while Seunghyun just sat there with his eyebrows furrowed in utter confusion.

"Jiyong...How do you know my mother?" Seunghyun asked inquisitively and his mother took the chance to answer before Jiyong could utter a word.

"He is the son of a close friend of mine. They just moved in upstairs, literally right above us!" she grinned widely but looked back to Jiyong and then to Seunghyun. "But, how do you two know each other?" she kept glancing between the two in mild surprise. This time, Jiyong was able to give his answer.

"We met today at the laundromat" he replied casually, leaving out any detail about their longing gazes and thorough look over of the other. Seunghyun's mother was clearly overjoyed by this information and let the boys retreat to Seunghyun's room until Jiyong had to go back home. He escorted Jiyong up to his apartment and smiled widely once he got Jiyong's email address. Little did Seunghyun know, just how much this man would mean to him.

Five Years Later

Seunghyun and Jiyong were practically inseparable from one another after that. Wherever one would go, you would almost always see the other. They both graduated together and were secretly lovers to the outside world, though many speculated the relationship between the two to be more than just a friendship. However, the day of Jiyong's 21st birthday was the day that the two had truly been fearing. Jiyong was set to move to Japan after being scouted by an entertainment company that Jiyong had idolized since he was child, but on the day he turned 21.

They spent the whole day together, whispering sweet nothings while laying next to one another in heartache, not wanting to separate, but Seunghyun wanted Jiyong to follow his dreams of becoming a great songwriter, producer and singer. Each passing moment they spent together served only to cause more pain knowing they would not longer be able to spend time like this ever again.

As he hour came for Jiyong to leave, Seunghyun gave him a ride to the airport with a heavy heart. Instead of the comfortable silence they had grown accustomed to, this one was painful and thick. Neither could speak out because if they did, Jiyong would never be able to step away from Seunghyun ever again. Within a few minutes they got to the airport, where Seunghyun insisted on taking Jiyong's bags because it was the right thing to do when in all actuality it was the only  and maybe even the last thing of Jiyong's that he might get to hold.

They stood hand in hand in the airport, their strong grip wavering once the call to board the flight was called. Jiyong immediately walked away without a word, but turned around and ran to Seunghyun in tears. Jiyong melded their lips together in one last passionate kiss of goodbye. and as he pulled away, he took a red ribbon from his pocket and tied it around his lover's wrist.

"Whenever you feel down or sad, look at this so I'll be with you. Especially looking to the stars. I promise I will never miss a single round of staring into the night sky to connect with you..." his words trailed off like the ears trickling down both males' cheeks."I-I love you Seunghyun, Always and forever..." he rolled up his sleeve to reveal a red ribbon exactly like the one he gave Seunghyun.

With one final kiss, they bid farewell and Seunghyun just stood there and watched Jiyong until he was out of sight. Once Jiyong was out of sight and he saw that plane leave, he finally broke down. He tried to stay calm and composed for Jiyong, but all he wanted to do was tell Jiyong he wasn't allowed to leave and they were supposed to be together forever...

*~End Flashback~*

As those memories made their way back like broken floodgates, so did all the pain and sorrow as well. He has never let that red ribbon from his sights, but as he stared at it, he figured out why he reacted so strongly only now to the tiny strip of cloth in his hand. August 18th, otherwise known as Jiyong's birthday and the day he left ten years ago. He stared into the stars and cried out his lover's name in desperate need of care and compassion. But not a single response, not even an owl hooting or the chirp of a cricket. Pure silence, except for the sound of Seunghyun's sobbing.

What he hadn't expected was to have a pair of arms wrap around him as he sighed his sorrows. "N-not now Umma...Please..." he choked out between sobs, but something was off. These arms around him were much to tiny to belong to his mother and there was a familiar red ribbon tied around the wrist of one of the pale arms. Seunghyun was in shock, thinking that maybe he had finally lost his sanity until he shifted his head to turn around and see the face of the man he loved. This proved he wasn't dreaming.

He stood abruptly as a sob of disbelief and pure joy overwhelmed him as he embraced his lover in the greatest hug he could ever have and sealed the reunion with a deep passionate kiss. The proof of love by the Ribbon of Dreams.
