Trapped

A Strange Boy's Confession

It was yet another beautiful day in the new neighborhood. Miho sighed as she inhaled the marvelous scent of the trees. She looked around the streets, looking if there was any car coming, before she started to walk across.

Once she was at the other side of the street, she started to walk straight, following the side walk. She was on her way to her dance class, which was only a few streets away. Miho recently moved in with her friends, at their apartment, to be able to live near her dance class. Her past home was really far from her dance class and she couldn’t keep up with the long travel she had to do. She would’ve just attended another dance class, but she loved her dance teacher, Ms. Jung, too much to let another teacher teach her.

After a few minutes of walking, an old looking building welcomed her view. She looked up and read the sign on the building.

‘Dream Dance Academy’ it read. She sighed, studying the old building. Her dance school was really old, and there were only a few students that was studying there. The school couldn’t afford to buy a new building for the dance classes and they were stuck with this old building.

“What are you doing out here?” Miho heard a voice ask, breaking her thoughts. She looked behind her and saw a young dark haired boy.

“Not going in?” he asked as he walked towards here. One of the reasons why Miho couldn’t switch dance schools is because of this guy. His name was Kim Taemin. Others call him Siwoo. He was one of her classmates in her dance class. He was also a resident at the neighborhood.

Siwoo was really quiet, gentle, but strange at the same time. He was really nice to her; Giving her water whenever she was tired during dance classes and would always ask how she was doing. She received nothing but kindness from him, which she’s grateful for. Although they didn’t really hang out, nor talk to each other that much, Miho can’t help but value Siwoo’s presence. Although sometimes, she finds Siwoo’s presence disturbing.

There would be random times when she would feel someone staring at her, and whenever she would look, she would see Siwoo. Miho has also been seeing Siwoo a lot, from place to place. Seolhwa, Miho’s friend, even once joked that Siwoo was Miho’s stalker.

“I was just going in.” Miho said.

“Oh, then let’s go in together.” Siwoo offered with a kind smile. Miho had no choice but to nod, and agree with Siwoo’s offer. It would be rude to refuse his offer, and there weren’t really anything wrong with just going inside the school together.

The both of them went inside the building and was greeted by the secretary, Juni.

“Good Afternoon, Siwoo and Miho!” Juni greeted from her desk, smiling at the two of them.

“Hi, Juni.” Miho greeted back, while Siwoo just nodded his head at the girl, “Has Ms. Jung arrived?” Miho asked as she walked towards the desk at the center of the lobby.

“She’s not here, yet.” Juni answered as she shook her head, “But you guys can go up to the dance room. It’s already open.” She said with a wide smile. Miho nodded and was about to walk towards the elevator with Siwoo when Juni spoke again.

“I would take the stairs, if I were you.” Juni said, “The elevators broke down a while ago.” She informed them. Miho sighed, not wanting to take the stairs, before looking at the elevators.

“But the elevators are fixed now, right?” Miho said, seeing the elevators were already working, “Since they already fixed it, it probably won’t break again anytime soon, right?” she said, stubbornly, and resumed to walking towards to elevator with Siwoo trailing behind. Once she arrived in front of the elevator, she pushed the button to call the elevator and waited silently.

“I think we should take the stairs.” Siwoo suddenly spoke, tapping Miho’s shoulder with his finger to gain her attention. Miho turned around and faced Siwoo before shaking her head.

“The elevators are fine now. I think it’ll be alright.” She said and was about to turn back around when Siwoo spoke, once again.

“But the elevators might break down again. This building is really old now. The chances of the elevators breaking are high.” He pointed out. Miho sighed before she shook her head once more.

“Don’t worry too much.” She tried to assure him, “This building might be old but I think the technicians fixed the elevator well.” She said and was about to turn around once again when an idea went into her mind.

“If you want to, you could take the stairs and I’ll take the elevator.” She said to him. She wanted to see what his reaction would be. She wanted to know if he would stay with her or not.

“Fine, let’s take the elevator.” Siwoo said and sighed in defeat. Miho could only nod her head, curious to why he stayed with her. He really did have the freedom to just use the stairs and leave her, but he didn’t. Maybe he was her stalker.

“Let’s go.” Miho sang as the elevator doors opened. She quickly went inside the elevator and waited for Siwoo to follow her. Siwoo sighed and studied the elevator first before he followed Miho inside. Miho pressed the button to the top floor and quickly pressed the button to close the elevator door.

They stood in silence, waiting for the elevator to arrive at their floor. They stood a few inches from each other, just waiting. Miho bit her lip, feeling a bit of awkwardness in the air. She couldn’t help but feel awkward with the silence that surrounded them. Siwoo on the other hand could only look down, not knowing what to do. He, as well, could feel the awkwardness. He wanted to break the silence and speak to Miho, but he didn’t know what to say.

The elevator stopped at the top floor and the two of them went closer to the elevator door, waiting for the elevator door to open. After a few moments, the elevator door stayed close, making the both of them feel impatient.

“Why won’t it open?” Miho whined as she attempted to open the door with her hands. Siwoo softly pulled her away from the door and shook his head, telling her not to open it. Siwoo looked at the elevator screen and noticed that the light of the screen was gone. He was about to speak until the lights flickered, startling them. After a few flicker, the lights went off and it became dark, making Miho jump closer to Siwoo.

“What happened?!” Miho gasped, as she held onto Siwoo’s arm, scared, “Why did the lights go off?!” she panicked and gripped Siwoo’s arm tighter.

“Umm…” Siwoo said, blushing at the sudden contact, “The elevator must’ve broken down again.” He pointed out and slowly walked towards the buttons of the elevator, with Miho clinging onto him. He pressed the emergency button and waited for a few moments. A voice was then heard from the speaker.

“Hello? Is everything alright?” the voice asked.

“Juni! It’s me!” Miho loudly said to the speaker, relieved at the familiar voice, “The elevator stopped. We’re stuck here!” she informed, hoping that the other girl could help them.

“I knew it. I knew the elevators would break down again.” Juni said as she sighed, “I told you not to take the elevator!” she scolded. Miho rolled her eyes, not really wanting to be nagged at.

“I’ll call the technicians. You’ll be out of there in no time. Just relax and wait.” Juni assured. The speaker went off, and once again Siwoo and Miho were alone in the elevator. Miho slowly removed her grip from Siwoo’s arm, suddenly feeling awkward.

“Sorry.” She apologized, suddenly feeling shy because of her actions.

“No, it’s okay.” Siwoo quickly assured her and looked away.

They were once again filled with silence. Both of them stood still, not knowing what to do. It was only after a few minutes that Siwoo took the initiative and broke the silence by inviting Miho to sit down. Both of them sat down on the ground and was once again silent. Miho sat by the door while Siwoo sat by the wall in front of the door; They were sat, facing each other, but was a few feet apart.

Miho sighed, not liking the position she was in. She was stuck inside the elevator with her possible stalker, just a few minutes before her dance class. Her day wasn’t quite going well.

“They really should improve these elevators.” Siwoo spoke, trying to make small talk. Miho chuckled, finding Siwoo’s words amusing.

“Yeah, they should.” She agreed with him, “Hopefully they’ll find some budget soon so we could have our dance classes at a better building, and not get trapped inside an elevator like this again.” She said  as she hung her head.

“But, I don’t mind getting trapped like this.” Siwoo quickly said, making Miho look up in surprise. Miho suddenly felt nervous. Her suspicion of Siwoo being her stalker was suddenly increasing.

“What?” she asked, not knowing if she heard what he said correctly, “Why don’t you mind?” she said, curious and nervous. Siwoo looked down and hesitated to speak. Miho looked at him expectedly and couldn’t help but smile when Siwoo sighed and opened his mouth to speak.

“We don’t really talk that much. Somehow, being trapped like this gives us a chance to talk.” He confessed. Miho couldn’t help but smile and nod at his statement, agreeing with him.

“But we could also talk when we’re not trapped inside an elevator.” Miho pointed out and chuckled at her own statement. Siwoo laughed, and nodded.

Suddenly they found their selves doing what they don’t usually do, talking. They talked about random stuff and just got to know each other. Miho suddenly regretted thinking Siwoo was her stalker. He was a funny and kind guy. All he ever wanted was to talk to her, not stalk her. Before they knew it, an hour already passed.

“It’s been an hour.” Miho pointed out, as she checked the time on her phone. Sweat filled her face, caused by the lack of cool air inside the elevator. Siwoo, too, was covered in sweat and his shirt was already damped.

“Why is it taking so long?” Miho whined as she stood up and went toward the elevator buttons. She pushed the emergency button and waited for Juni to speak. When she didn’t hear anyone speak, she pressed the emergency button once again and spoke.

“Hey! We’re still here.” She said as she pushed the button, again and again. Siwoo sighed and stood up before taking Miho’s hand away from the emergency button.

“Why isn’t anyone responding?” Miho complained as Siwoo dragged her away from the button.

“Maybe they’re already fixing the elevator.” Siwoo said and let go of Miho’s hands. Miho sighed before taking a deep breath. She took another again and again. Slowly, Miho could feel her tightening. She gasped and quickly grabbed Siwoo’s shirt and tried to take another deep breath.

“What’s wrong?” Siwoo asked, looking at Miho in concern. Her eyes were opened wide and her grip on his shirt was really tight. was open, as she tried hard to breathe.

Miho’s knees suddenly felt weak and her eyes squinted. She suddenly fell on her knees, pulling Siwoo down with her. She tried to cough and get some air enter , but nothing happened. She looked up at Siwoo, panting, who was looking at her in concern.

“I… I…” she tried to speak but she couldn’t. She didn’t have the enough oxygen to speak.

“Wait! Don’t die! Don’t die on me!” he panicked, seeing that Miho almost had her eyes closed. He patted her back and shook her body, trying to do everything he can to make her feel better.

“I’m having an asthma attack. I can’t breathe!” she gasped, finally being able to speak. Siwoo’s eyes widened and he quickly looked around the room, looking for anything he could help her with.

“What do I do?” he asked, confused. Miho closed her eyes, tightly, and tried her best to breathe hard. Siwoo took a deep breath and started blowing air on her face, hoping he could transfer air to her. Miho looked away from him, finding what he was doing unhelpful. Miho’s head was starting to sway. She was starting to feel weak and lightheaded. She could feel her consciousness starting to drift away. Siwoo sighed and looked around, feeling helpless.

“Hey! Don’t die! I haven’t confessed to you yet. Don’t die!” Siwoo said, exasperated. At his words, Miho’s ears perked up and she could feel her consciousness slowly coming back.

“I like you, so please don’t leave me. Don’t die now. Please, I like you.” He pleaded, eyes almost tearing up. Miho couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She, now, completely regretted even thinking about the words ‘Siwoo’ and ‘stalker’ in the same sentence. He liked her. That’s why he was always there wherever she was. That’s why he was so nice to her.

Suddenly, Siwoo looked straight at her. Miho felt his gaze and she looked up at him. His eyes were staring right at hers and she could feel herself slowly melting in his gaze. His hands flew to each sides of her face, startling her. She was about to ask what he was doing when her lips was suddenly shut. Siwoo’s lips was on top of hers. She could feel Siwoo breathing at , trying to give her oxygen.

Miho closed her eyes and inhaled the air Siwoo was giving her. Slowly, she found herself breathing normally again. She closed her lips, not needing more air. She stayed still, not pulling away. Seeing that Miho had no plans on pulling away, Siwoo placed on of his hands at the back of Miho’s head and one hand on her hips, kissing her deeply.

After a few minutes of kissing, Siwoo pulled away and looked at her eyes. Miho opened her eyes and smiled at Siwoo. Both of them erupted in laughter, finding what happened funny.

They stopped laughing when they heard someone clear their throat. Both of them looked at the now opened elevator door and saw a tall woman at the other side of the door, with her arms crossed.

“Ms.Jung!” Miho gasped, “How are you?” she awkwardly greeted. Ms.Jung chuckled and could only shake her head at the two lovers in front of her.

“Classes have been cancelled because of these broken elevators.” Ms.Jung informed them, “You two should go home.” She said and was about to leave but not before reminding them, “Use the stairs when you leave. You don’t want to be trapped inside those elevators again”.

Miho stared at her teacher’s retreating back, not being able to absorb what happened. Siwoo cleared his throat, making Miho look at him.

“Umm… We should go.” He said as he stood up and offered his hand to Miho. Miho couldn’t help but smile as she took Siwoo’s hand and stood up. She was about to let go and walk out of the elevator when she felt Siwoo’s grip on her hand tighten. She looked at him, blushing a bit, before looking at their hands.

“What’s wrong? You don’t like it?” he asked as he brought their hands up and intertwined them. Miho bit her lip and shook her head.

“It’s okay.” She confessed. Siwoo couldn’t help but smile at her answer, and Miho smiled back. Siwoo took a deep breath before he started walking out of the elevator, dragging Miho with him. They took the stairs back down, still hand in hand, and walked towards the desk of the worried secretary.

“Oh my god! Miho, are you okay?!” Juni quickly asked in concern, seeing Miho and Siwoo finally out of the elevator. Miho smiled at her and gave her a small nod, telling her she was fine.

“Are you sure? You have an asthma right? You didn’t have an asthma attack while you were in there, did you?” Juni asked. Miho couldn’t help but blush thinking about her asthma attack a while ago. She took a quick glance at Siwoo, who only smiled at himself, probably proud of what he did.

         “I’m fine.” Miho assured her.

“That’s good then.” Juni said and nodded, surveying Miho’s body, “You look fine.” She pointed out. Juni’s eyes stopped at Siwoo and Miho’s intertwined hands and a knowing smile appeared on her face. She looked up at the two people in front of her with a big smile.

“Don’t worry, you two. The technicians will fix the elevator soon.” Juni assured them, “Hopefully they’ll be able to fix it permanently this time.” She sighed. The two of them nodded and bid their goodbyes to the girl before walking out of the building still hand in hand. While Juni, on the other hand, just watched the two with a small smile.

The two started walking back to their homes, still with their hands intertwined. They walked in silence, but unlike the uncomfortable silence they had a while ago, it was a comfortable silence.

“Thank you.” Miho broke the silence. Siwoo looked at her with a questioning gaze.

“Thank you for what you did earlier. I would probably be dead by now if you didn’t help me.” She said and bit her lip, remembering his confession.

“I couldn’t just let you die.” Siwoo mumbled and looked down, “And Barom hyung told me to just do it, so I did.” He said, pertaining to the kiss. There was silence for a few moments, until both of them started laughing.

“It’s a pity though.” Siwoo started, and Miho looked at him in curiosity, “They’re gonna fix the elevators soon.” He said, making Miho scrunch her face.

“What do you mean?” she asked. Siwoo stopped walking, and so did Miho. He looked at her and smiled before he quickly leaned in and pecked Miho’s lips before pulling away. A triumphant smile erupted on his face as he sees Miho’s blushing face. Siwoo chuckled and wrapped an arm around Miho’s shoulder before he started walking again, dragging Miho with her.

“So, why is it a pity?” Miho asked again, leaning her head on Siwoo’s shoulder. Siwoo sighed before answering.

“I enjoyed being trapped in there.”
