The Advice Column: A Guide to Writing Fanfic

Description

Your one-stop shop for all your fanfic writing needs. It'll cover all stages of the fanfic process from planning to writing to editing.

Foreword

"You don’t start out writing good stuff. You start out writing crap and thinking it’s good stuff, and then gradually you get better at it. That’s why I say one of the most valuable traits is persistence.” — Octavia Butler1

Welcome you to The Advice Column: A Guide to Writing Fanfic.

Every author you have ever admired has written bad fic. What separates bad writers from good writers is that good writers have been writing longer and more often, so don’t be afraid to write. Even if you write bad fic, you can always edit into something better. If you have written something unsalvageable, you have practiced which means your next work will be a little better.

I seek to help any struggling writer through the difficult process of writing so that you may become a better writer, quicker. For your convenience, I placed a list of all the topics I plan to cover on the next page. Each topic is organized under the stage of writing it best fits under: planning, writing, or editing. If you believe I missed anything, tell me and I will consider adding the topic to the list. There will also be a Q&A page for any other questions you may have. On a formatting note, I will use footnotes to link or cite what I quote and to relay some related information.

On the Author

Hello, I thought you might like some background information on the person advising you. I am a native English speaker from the USA and am attending college. I started writing (poorly written) fanfic when I was twelve. I have jumped from Harry Potter fanfic to kpop to manga. I took a two year hiatus from writing because I was ashamed of my writing. I started up again this year. In all, I have gone through all the basic phases of a writer. I may not be a professional author, but I know how to write decently.

Disclaimer:

This is not the best or only method to writing fanfic. This is by no means the most comprehensive guide to fanfic writing that there is and does not intend to be. I will be using my own fanfics as examples at certain point.
