Love Actually

"We're going to be late! Hurry up, Tessa!" Hazel shouted up the stairs to
her sister. "We need to get to the theater quickly. I don't want to miss one single
moment of Gabe's face."
Tessa took one last look in the mirror and sighed.
"I guess this is as good as I get." she mumbled. She had her long blond hair in
a braid down her back and her maroon gown did bring out the green of her
eyes. However she knew that standing next to her sister she would disappear.
Hazel had curly brunette hair that hung in ringlets around her face and dark
brown eyes that men found intriguing. Hazel's figure was also much slimmer
than Tessa's. Hazel was always the center of attention with the men and
Tessa was always left in the corner alone.
"Hurry up Tessa! Hoya is here! We have to go!" Hazel yelled impatiently
up the stairs again. Tessa sighed in defeat and ran down the stairs.
"Hello ladies. How are you this evening?" Hoya asked as Tessa and
Hazel opened the front door to greet him.
"Oh Hoya, you can stop pretending to be such a gentleman. I have known
you since I was but a baby and I know that you are not." Hazel said waving her
hand. Hoya feigned surprise.
"Have you no faith in my ability to change?"
"You change? Ha. Ha. You make me laugh darling." Hazel replied lightly and
walked out the door toward the waiting carriage.
Hoya turned his gaze to Tessa and she felt herself blush. She had always
loved Hoya but he was far out of her league. He was dashing and handsome
and very popular with all of the women. He was tall and broad and filled every
room he entered with his presence. She was only glad that he found her worthy
of his friendship and could only dream of more.
"Tess, you look lovely this evening." Hoya said throwing her one of his
trademark smiles that showed his chiseled cheeks.
"You told Hazel that you could change but apparently you are still a liar." she
replied smiling back at him.
"And you are still blind Tess." he replied. They looked into each other’s eyes
for a long moment and then Hoya cleared his throat and held out his arm.
"Your car awaits my lady. Shall I you?" he asked in a regal tone.
Tessa laughed. She seemed to laugh easier with Hoya. She was able to
forget about being second place to her sister because Emmett had a way of
making her feel like she was first.
She looped her arm into the crook of his and they walked out the door.
"Hurry up Tessa! You are always so slow! Perhaps if you quit eating
seconds at dinner you would be able to move faster!" Hazel shouted back at
the car.
They were at the theater and Tessa was searching frantically for her
handbag. Hoya was waiting patiently at the side of the car to help her
down but Hazel was a different story. Tessa felt her face flame with
embarrassment as her sister yelled at her across the crowded sidewalk.
"I'm sorry Hazel. I've misplaced my handbag." she replied while struggling to
hold back her tears.
"Oh no. Poor Tessa lost her snacks! Just come on and forget about it. You
probably left it at the house."Hazel yelled back while stomping her high
heeled foot impatiently.
"Tess, don't listen to her. You know how she gets when she's man hunting."
Hoya said quietly. Truthfully he thought that Hazel needed a swift kick in her
backside but he knew that Tessa was much too passive and gentle to give it
to her.
A sob escaped Tessa and Hoya felt anger well up in him toward Hazel.
"Cat, don't let her get to you." he said. Tessa jumped down from the
car refusing his outstretched hand.
"Please excuse me Hoya. I need to powder my nose." she said and rushed
off into the theater. Hoya cursed under his breath and stormed off toward
Hazel, who saw him coming and braced herself against the stone wall.
"How dare you Hazel. She is crying just so you know." he snarled. Hazel
looked up at him and felt fear. His brown eyes that always danced with
amusement were now hard with anger. His strong jaw was set and he was
practically shaking.
"Hoya, love, you need to calm down. Tessa is just sensitive because she
is fat." Bianca replied while curling her nose as if she smelled something foul.
Hoya grabbed her arm roughly. "She has twice the grace and elegance that you will ever have Hazel. You are nothing but a rude obnoxious brat."

"Let go of my arm Hoya." Hazel hissed pulling her arm out of his grasp. "Go

Find your cow if she is what makes you happy. Why you passed up on me, I'll

Never know." With that Hazel turned and she too disappeared into the theater.

Tessa managed to compose herself in the toilet and walked back

to the lobby. She looked around but Hoya and Hazel were nowhere to be

seen. Tessa no longer felt like watching the play so she walked back out to

the car and up to Hoya's driver Edward.

"Miss Tessa, aren't you supposed to be inside?”

.

"I suppose I have lost my yearning for entertainment this evening Edward. I was

hoping that I could get you to drive me home, if it is not too much trouble." He

smiled warmly at her.

"Of course my lady." he replied, knowing that her tear stained face was

evidence of her earlier encounter with her sister.

"Thank you very much." she said taking her seat. She wondered if Hoya was

having fun. She knew that there was probably already women hanging all over

him. She felt jealousy and sadness well up inside of her at the thought. She

wished she could just tell him how she felt but she knew she could not stand his

rejection.

She rode home in silence and after Edward had seen her in she walked up to

her room and changed into her nightgown. She undid her braided hair and lit

the candle at her writing desk. She always turned to her poetry and diaries

when life was too much. She had discovered her love for writing as a small

child when her mother had died during childbirth and her little brother, whom her

mother died giving life too, passed away three days after.

After losing their mother, Tessa and Hazel had become very different

people. Tessa who was the oldest had taken over the roll of mother in the

house. She cooked and cleaned and tried to make sure that everyone was

happy. Hazel on the other hand had become very rebellious and irritable,

caring only about making herself happy.

Their father had been a very rich man so life hadn't been too difficult financially,

however after losing his wife, their father had become very withdrawn. He too

passed away only six years after his wife. This left Catherine who was then thirteen and Bianca, ten, on their own.

Even though Hoya had always been around he had become a very big part

of their lives then. At the time he was seventeen and their had entrusted his

daughters and estate to Hoya to keep safe. Catherine smiled when she

thought of Hoya. She loved him dearly and could not imagine her life without

him.

She frowned then, imagining what he was doing at the theater. No doubt

Hazel was already in Gabe's arms. He was the lead in the play and

Hazel's newest conquest. Hoya was most likely surrounded by beautiful

women and flirting mercilessly.

"He probably doesn't even notice that I'm missing." she said sadly. She carried

her pen and ink over to the arm chair by her bed and curled up to write.

"Haz, have you seen Catherine?" Hoya demanded, finally getting her

attention away from the stage where Gabe was performing.

"No I have not, Hoya." she replied. "If you don't mind I'm trying to enjoy

myself. Her temper tantrum and whining is not going to ruin my night." Hoya

growled under his breath and practically ran back down the aisle and out into

the lobby. He searched the theater for Tess to no avail. He walked outside

and went quickly over to where Edward was just pulling back in with the

car.

"Where have you been?" Hoya demanded.

"I'm sorry sir. Miss Tessa asked that I take her home and so I did."

"Was she ok?"

"Just a bit sad sir. I saw her in and left."

"I'm going to go check on her." Hoya said.

"Shall I drive you sir?" Edward asked. Hoya shook his head.

"No you better stay here. It is your responsibility to ensure that Hazel gets

home safely."

"Of course sir." Edward replied with a sigh. Hoya grinned and started down the sidewalk.

It was a thirty minute walk to Tessa's home and when Hoya arrived she

didn't answer when he knocked on the door. He tested the knob and it was

unlocked.

"We're going to be late! Hurry up, Tessa!" Hazel shouted up the stairs to

He tested the knob and it was

unlocked.
