Death of Love

It was well past midnight and Kyuhyun was pretty sure he heard the nearby clock tower hit one o’clock. However he didn’t care for any of that as he struggled to say on his feet. He spewed a long line of curses as he nearly tripped over an idle beer can on the sidewalk. He tried to keep his wobbly legs under control and finally managed to lean against the mossy wall beside him. The amount of alcohol in his system wasn’t doing any favours for his state either. He finally gave up the already losing battle and let himself sink to the pavement with his back leaned on the wall for support.

He looked around to figure out where he was. He remembered that he lost his job that morning and just an hour later his fiancé called off the engagement and broke up with him. The bastard didn’t even bother to say that to my face. He thought with a grimace. And when he got home he had found all his belonging stacked up outside the door with post it note on the door. His landlord had thrown him out of his small apartment just because of a one week late payment. That was it. That was all he had in this world. He was an orphan who had a minimum wage job, a dingy apartment and a handsome man to spend the rest of his life with. He was happy with what he had.

Had’ He thought to himself. It was the past. Now he is just man with nothing to lose. He didn’t know how everything turned 1800. How his dreams of a humble but happy future came crashing down. He didn’t ask for much, did he? Did he not deserve what other people had?

He bent his head and hid his face in the palms with his knees drawn close to the chest. A wave of self-pity and self-loath came over him breaking him into tears.

Everything that happened in a span of few hours was overwhelming for him. He was not ready for it. He hated everything. He hated his parents who abandoned him at a Church’s doorstep. He hated his heartless boss who drained his energy and finally spat him out. He hated his ex-fiancé for breaking his heart. He hated his apathetic landlord who threw him out without caring what would happen to him. But most of all he hated himself for being so weak, for being so helpless. And he could only see one solution in front of him. Ending his life. Well, it wasn’t as if it made any difference whether he lived or not. There was nobody to even check whether he’s alive or not let alone shed tears. So why not disappear altogether. Why be a burden to himself.

That evening he had withdrawn the little amount of money he had and walked to the part of the city that held most of the bars.

It was the last day he was going to spend on earth and he was going to enjoy the last few hours of his existence before disappearing forever. He drank everything he could have his hands on and walked from one bar to the other.

It was how he managed to make himself into a more pathetic mess, stranded on a pavement like a common drunkard. He guided his shivering hand to his pocket and drew the money he had left. Only a crumpled hundred fifty dollar note was sitting on his palm. He stared at it blankly wondering what to do with the last of his money.

He was broken from his reveries as someone tripped over his long legs. The guy was a short skinny man who was trying to walk straight but was failing miserably. The stranger’s bony face scrunched up in pain as he gathered himself off the pavement.

“The you doing in the middle of my path?” The stranger drawled at him with a hoarse voice. His sunken eyes bored into Kyuhyun’s in accuse.

“Um… I’m sorry.” Kyuhyun hurriedly apologised hoping the stranger would leave him be. However his hopes were in vain as the stranger stretched out his hand.

“Stop brooding kid. I’m Ryeowook. What’s your name?” The stranger introduced himself with a wide smile showing two rows of teeth with ceaseless drug use.

“Kyuhyun.” Kyuhyun replied without bothering to shake the hand. He came there to die, not to make friends.

“What do you say we make use of that money?”

Kyuhyun finally understood why the stranger was trying to be overly friendly with a drunkard sitting on the side of the road. He looked up at the shorter man to say that he would just give the money and to off with it, but Ryeowook had beat him to it.

“There’s a casino around the corner. Let’s go try your luck kid.”

Kyuhyun thought about the offer. Well, why not. It’s not that his luck was any good considering all the things that happened. Why not just enjoy wasting the rest of the money rather than handing it to a druggie. So he nodded in agreement and hoisted himself off the ground.

Both of them started towards the destination in silence.

Kyuhyun followed the shorter man into the casino which had a sign with ‘7Wolves’ in neon.

The guard closed the door behind them as soon as the two of them set foot inside but Kyuhyun was too distracted by what he saw to notice the ferrel grin that passed briefly on the guards face. The interior looked welcoming and luxurious compared to the gloomy, dampened environment of that part of the city. Several people were hogging the slot machines and if their pale skins and dead looking eyes were any indication they have hardly moved for days. An open bar was in the far corner and several poker tables were strewn across the open floor with each one occupied.

Kyuhyun’s attention was drawn back towards the man beside him as the shorter one tugged at his sleeve. He indicated towards the men’s room and made way leaving Kyuhyun stranded in the middle of the casino.

He finally grabbed chips worth of his money and made his way towards an empty chair at the poker table. Few hands into the game he was already down to much less chips than he started and Ryeowook who dragged him in here was still gone and nowhere to be found.

Kyuhyun decided he would finish off his last remaining chips and would go to finish his original plans about his life. He was still losing when he suddenly felt a chill run through him. He straightened his hunched back as he felt eyes on the back of his head, making his hairs stand up. In instinct he turned his head around to confirm his suspicions and was disappointed as he couldn’t find anyone paying any attention to him. Everyone in the casino had their bloodshot eye strained on different games that they believe will give them a fortune. Kyuhyun shook his head in an attempt to ignore the chill and returned to his game.

But not long after that he again felt the feeling of someone watching him. It was rather a chill a deer would feel when the predator calculate its attack on the prey.  Kyuhyun tensed his shoulders to prevent a small shiver shaking his body. He turned his neck in a fast movement to locate the eyes that cause the shivers and met with dark brown pair of eyes staring right at him, never faltering as he kept staring back.

Just as sudden as it begun the gaze was broken as the other walked away from his path of vision even before he could fully look at the person those captive eyes belonged to.

Kyuhyun shrugged off the bizarre incident and turned back to the game only to lose all his money by the next hand. Scoffing at the misfortune followed him the whole day, he got to up his feet to leave the casino. However he was stopped from doing so as someone held his shoulder from behind. He spun around only to find familiar brown eyes staring at him, almost making him feel as if they were peering into his soul.

The stare was so intense he had to break the gaze and look away. However Kyuhyun found that the stranger was still staring at him when he returned the gaze. The stranger was a handsome young man who was slightly shorter than him. His pointy nose and pouty lips were adding to the young look. And his jet black hair was framing his handsome face and resting lightly above the intense, otherwise innocent looking doe eyes. And pale porcelain skin looked utterly smooth and perfect under the lights in the casino. In conclusion the stranger looked like a finely carved sculpture and Kyuhyun has just become an avid fan. However his daze was broken as a smooth voice interrupted his daydream.

“Hello!” The stranger greeted with a soft smile curving up his lips. “My name is Sungmin. I own his place.” He extended his hand in welcome.

If there’s anything Kyuhyun prided himself in, that’s his quick wit which apparently has left him as he struggled to reply.

“H-hello. I’m uh Kyuhyun.” He finally replied, shaking the other’s hand, which he couldn’t help but felt soft under his touch.

“Ah… I’m sorry but I couldn’t help but notice that you lost all your money. Is there anything we can do to make your day better? I don’t like to see my customers leave unsatisfied.”

The stranger’s – Sungmin’s – words brought Kyuhyun back to reality. He didn’t plan to make himself feel better. He just wanted to feel nothing at all.

Hence he politely rejected the kind offer and turned back towards the door to leave, with a slight regret that he won’t be able to see this mesmerising creature ever again.

Sungmin spoke again before he could walk away. “Wait, I just feel bad about all this. Let’s just grab a drink, on the house.”

Kyuhyun looked into the wide eager eyes of the other man and finally agreed. He didn’t know what about those eyes that made him obey the other’s invite but he knew he couldn’t say no even if he tried. What harm could one drink make? Besides the last person he would spend time with will be this beautiful being. So it’s a win win.

Sungmin led both of them towards a closed booth near the bar and asked Kyuhyun to make himself comfortable while he brought the drinks. Kyuhyun did just that and seated himself in the middle. It was a circular booth with a dark velvet curtain obstructing the entrance.

After few minutes Sungmin arrived with a bottle of Pinot Noir and two glasses which he placed on the table in the middle and took a seat beside Kyuhyun.

“Oh, wine is my favourite!” Kyuhyun smiled. He noted the date and added, “wow this is a 1879! How did you even managed to get this?”

“Would you believe if I said that I bottled it personally?”

Sungmin stared a while at Kyuhyun’s perplexed face and broke into a pearl laughter. The latter couldn’t resist and joined the other’s laughing fit. It was a contagious laughter which attracted Kyuhyun.

“You should’ve seen your face!” Sungmin said trying to control his laughter.

Finally Sungmin broke the wax seal of the bottle and poured into the two glasses, the rich aroma of the wine wafting through the small space.

“I’ve been saving this wine for special occasions Kyuhyun-ssi but then I decided why not today.”

“Then I should feel honoured I guess.” Kyuhyun replied with a smile, sipping at his wine.

“Yes, you should.” Sungmin replied with a teasing smile and raised his glass in emphasis. “Anyway Kyuhyun-ssi, I couldn’t help but notice that you don’t seem to mind much about losing all your money in one night. Can I ask why?”

Kyuhyun did have a reason to not care anymore but it wasn’t something he was ready to share with anyone else. He didn’t want to sound more pathetic than he already was.

However the seemingly genuine curiosity in the doe eyes of the other was urging him to spill everything he has been bottled up inside him. He couldn’t understand why he wanted to say everything to a complete stranger he met mere minutes ago but there he was spattering out all the heartbreaks and frustrations to the enticing dark haired stranger.

The full moon was making its way towards the west unbeknownst to both of them and the city has fallen to the deep silent that comes before a noisy morning. Even the most drunken and wasted men have found their way home or a pavement as a temporary home.

The two who were sitting in the small both were unapprehended by the changes. One of them was revealing his inner soul to the other man who was still going through his first glass of wine and was swirling the content while listening intently. And only few drops of the red liquid was remaining in the glass bottle on the table.

Feeling exhausted after revealing everything Kyuhyun poured the last remaining drops in the bottle directly into his mouth.

“I- I’m sorry Sungmin-ssi. You didn’t have to listen to all of that.”

“It’s okay. I already consider you a friend so I’ll listen if it helps you.” Sungmin placed a comforting hand on the other’s shoulder and replied in a smooth voice. “Just because few of them didn’t want you doesn’t mean the whole world need you gone. If someone is meant to stay in your life they will make the effort to stay. You should let go of people who want to leave you. Besides you just made new friend. Life goes on. You already moved a step forward by letting me help you.”

Kyuhyun didn’t know whether it was the fact of drinking a whole bottle of hundred year old wine or the mystifying gaze of the other, he felt an electrifying jolt that ran straight to his heart making it to pick up the speed.

He couldn’t deny the fact the man beside him was the most gorgeous man he has ever seen. He cannot even compare this striking magnificence to his ex-lover, Siwon who he thought was handsome. He has already started to like him just from the conversation he had. Sungmin had been listening to him even though he didn’t have to. He said the right things at the right moment. His expressions were as if he was also going through the pain with Kyuhyun. Just the former’s presence was soothing for him.

And on top of it Sungmin was offering him his friendship. Should he take it? Should he think twice about removing himself from the world? Should he take this new friendship as the ticket to a new life? Can he start anew and forget about his painful past?

He was torn away from his dilemma as Sungmin dragged his fingers down the other’s arm nonchalantly and placed his palm on top of the other’s hand. “You will be alright.” He said reassuringly.

Kyuhyun gulped down a nervous knot and replied hoarsely, “Thank you.”

He didn’t know how but the atmosphere has gotten thick with unexplained tension. The place where Sungmin’s hand rested on was on heat and his heart was fluttering. And the wine seemed to be already working on him as he felt slightly dizzy. Hence he closed his eyes shut for a moment to calm himself.

Kyuhyun’s tightly closed eyes shot open in surprise as something soft grazed his lips. Sungmin’s was leaning towards him and former’s face was a breath away from his face. His dark eyes stared into Kyuhyun’s eyes as he spoke.

“I’m sorry, didn’t mean to surprise you.” Sungmin murmured softly, his cool breath hitting Kyuhyun’s face. He started to draw back from the latter but stopped as Kyuhyun murmured, “It’s okay,” shyly averting his eyes away from Sungmin. He didn’t know why he didn’t stop Sungmin or why he wanted to kiss the other at all but he wanted to feel the softness again.

Sungmin smiled softly and kissed the other with much force than before.

The kiss felt sweet and Kyuhyun knew he was already addicted to the other’s taste. He loved how the bow shaped lips moved against his own. He felt Sungmin’s wet tongue gliding against his lower lip asking for entrance which he granted willingly.

He had never felt this spark running through his body before as Sungmin’s tongue swept past and explored every inch in his mouth. He moaned into the kiss, knots in his stomach were turning in utter pleasure. Sungmin’s bit down on his lower lip sending shivers through his body. The former off a bead of blood off the lip and went back to Kyuhyun’s plump lips.

Kyuhyun pulled away from Sungmin as his lungs were screaming for air. He couldn’t believe what happened few seconds ago. He breathed out heavily in satisfaction and looked at Sungmin. The latter was looking back at him with darkened eyes asking for more.

The gallant look he was receiving was too much for Kyuhyun. He felt his cheeks burning and quickly lowered his head to hide the blush.

“I – umm – I need to go to the washroom.” Kyuhyun murmured lamely. He needed to collect himself before he could converse normally again. Apparently Sungmin’s kiss has affected his coherent thinking more than he thought. He could feel the other’s eyes following his movement as he shuffled himself out of the booth.

He let out a nervous breath as soon as he stepped out the booth and made his way towards the men’s room.

Kyuhyun stood in front of the large mirror in the men’s room and stared at his reflection.

The day has taken several unsuspecting turns for him. He went through rejections, failures, heartbreaks and was even suicidal. But just then he was standing there feeling alive than never before. He thought of it as his destiny. Fate has put him through so much pain in one day only to send him to a stranger’s doorstep. A stranger who took away his pain and made him feel alive in mare few hours.

He didn’t hate his ex-lover anymore. Neither did he hate his boss or his landlord or anyone else who made his life a living hell. Most importantly he didn’t hate himself anymore. All because Sungmin listened to him and wanted him even after hearing how broken he is. He was relieved to find out at least one person would care about whether he lived or died.

Kyuhyun sighed and the faucet. He took a handful of cold water and splashed on his face. He ran his wet fingers through the hair looked back at his reflection in determination.

He was going to make everything right in his life. He was going to start over and hopefully with Sungmin beside him to encourage him.

However his pep talk in his mind was interrupted by the sound of a laboured breathing coming from a closed stall behind him. He furrowed his brows in confusion and walked towards the closed door.

Kyuhyun cleared his throat to let the occupant inside know he’s there. “Excuse me sir? Are you okay?” He asked as he knocked slightly on the door.

All he got as an answer was a string of disjointed mumbles. Kyuhyun moved closer, now concerned. “Hello?”

A foreboding feeling wrapped around him as he waited more for a clear answer. He moved to open the door when he heard a loud thud from inside which made him panic and forcefully push at the door. It opened without a restraint to reveal a familiar man lying on the floor inside the stall with his hand to the right of his neck.

Ryeowook turned his sunken eyes towards a stunned Kyuhyun, his face even more pale than they first met. Kyuhyun immediately lowered himself beside the man and tried to figure out what happened to him.

The smaller man was trying to speak but all Kyuhyun could hear were gurgling sounds. After several attempts of speaking Ryeowook gave up trying altogether and removed his hand from his neck revealing two puncture wounds with blood still dripping.

Kyuhyun froze and stared at the sight before him.

“Oh my God! What happened?” He asked as soon as he recovered himself.

Ryeowook struggled once more to speak but stilled as the last breath left him, leaving Kyuhyun more scared.

“He’s dead.” A familiar voice said from the doorway.

Sungmin was standing at the doorway with his face void of any emotion and seemed unaffected by the sight of a dead body in his premises.

“What?” Kyuhyun mumbled dumbly, trying wrap his head around the situation.

Sungmin closed the door behind him without a reply and walked towards Kyuhyun without even sparing a glance at the dead man. He stopped in front of the taller and stared at him with a tilted head.

The sight in front of Kyuhyun was utterly adorable if not for the deadly aura that suddenly seem to surround Sungmin. The unblinking eyes and the dead stare sent chills down Kyuhyun’s spine. It was as if Sungmin was sizing him up. He didn’t like this Sungmin. He didn’t like this Sungmin at all. The only thought that crossed his mind was ‘run away while you can’.

“Don’t be afraid Kyuhyun-ah.” Replied Sungmin smiling sweetly. He took a step forward making Kyuhyun to step back.

The taller took few steps back instinctively. But he stopped as his back hit the wall behind him.

“Uh…I’m not… S-Sungmin…” Kyuhyun mumbled as he flattened himself against the wall. He couldn’t understand how a loving man changed so quickly or what exactly had happened to Sungmin that’s making him want to turn tail and run for life. Whatever it was he just wanted to put some distance between himself and this emotionless man in front of him.

However he knew subconsciously his mind has put two and two together and knew who – rather what – Sungmin is. But he refused to believe such monstrosity existed in the world let alone in this innocent looking man.

Sungmin moved forward and placed both of his hands on the wall trapping Kyuhyun between himself and the solid wall leaving the latter no room to run away. Sungmin locked his eyes with the taller and moved forward for an open mouthed kiss.

Kyuhyun closed his eyes tightly as Sungmin’s lips collided with his. The latter’s tongue poked his tightly closed lips for immediate entrance. Sungmin moved his hips forward meeting Kyuhyun’s as the latter didn’t comply. Kyuhyun involuntarily gasped as their groins met, giving access for Sungmin’s probing tongue.

Kyuhyun felt himself easily falling for whatever Sungmin was doing to him. The shorter man’s slick muscle was exploring the hot cavern earning him involuntary shivers from the taller as he swept past a particular spot. Sungmin moved one of his hands to the back of the other’s head and the other hand resting on the small of the back.

A small conscious part of his brain was asking Kyuhyun to get away from the other but it was fighting a losing battle. His body was completely under the charm of a certain Sungmin.

Sungmin moved this lips along the jaw and to the neck. Kyuhyun automatically tilted his head which allowed Sungmin more access. The veins in his neck were prominent with all the tension and pleasure. Kyuhyun could feel Sungmin’s soft butterfly kisses on his neck and his own hand moved to wound around Sungmin’s waist to support himself. He was shaking both with pleasure and anxious anticipation.

Sungmin placed an open mouthed kiss on the patch of the skin covering his prominent veins. Kyuhyun felt the other’s wet tongue tracing patterns before he felt the slight pain of something piercing his skin. The pain gradually intensified as Sungmin’s elongated canines pierced into his vein, in the blood intoxicated with wine.

That moment he came to his senses, finally grasping the full gravity of the situation. He unwound his arms around Sungmin and tried to push the other away. This seemed futile as Sungmin held on to him, at his neck more forcefully and hungrily.

“S-Sungmin… please…s-stop…” Kyuhyun whimpered in pain.

Sungmin detached his mouth from the other’s neck for a moment and moved in for a kiss on the lips making Kyuhyun cringe at the metallic taste of his own blood.

“Don’t worry Kyuhyun-ah. You’ll feel good in a moment.” Sungmin murmured running his fingers in the other’s hair. “You taste so good. I might even let you stay with me. I’ve never tasted someone so good.”

“N-no… please let me go…” Kyuhyun trembled at the sight of the pointy canines sticking out from corners of the other’s mouth. He was going through waves of emotions, fear and most of all betrayal.

It may have been few hours but he had felt more attachment towards Sungmin than he ever felt towards anyone else in his life. He thought he was getting another and a better shot at life. But it has only ended up in another heartbreak.

Right then he only wanted to get away from the source of his pain. Pain that is hurting him both mentally and physically. Ignoring the stinging pain in his neck Kyuhyun gathered all the strength he had left and started punching at Sungmin’s chest to push the other away. After few punches he managed to break away from the grip Sungmin had on him and he ran for the door only to be stopped in his track as he came face to face with Sungmin.

“Going somewhere?” Sungmin asked with a ferrel grin. Kyuhyun backed away two steps but was stopped as Sungmin grabbed him by his shirt.

“I don’t think you’re going anywhere tonight.” Sungmin growled in his ear before Kyuhyun was thrown towards the wooden stall that gave away and broke under the harsh impact.

Kyuhyun tried to ignore the pain that ran through his body and sit up.  But the next second he looked up to see a worried Sungmin hovering over him lightly his cheek.

“I’m so sorry Kyuhyun-ah. I didn’t mean to hurt you. You just made me angry and I lost control.”

Rather than feeling reassured Kyuhyun felt the familiar chill run down his spine. The same feeling of vulnerability he felt when Sungmin first laid eyes on him.

“You’re crazy.” Kyuhyun mumbled as he tried to push himself away from Sungmin who knelt in front of him. “You’re a monster and you’re crazy!” He repeated with wide eyes, realization hitting him. He was going to die a slow painful death while this man the life out of him and there is no way out.

“Yes I am a monster. Everybody says so. I’m only doing what I’m supposed to do.” Sungmin hissed in emphasis and dragged Kyuhyun to a standing position. He reattached his fangs to the other’s neck who gave up struggling altogether.

Kyuhyun didn’t want to feel anything. Guess I’m going to have to stick to my original plans. He thought bitterly. It looked like he gets his wish for death after all. The pain in his neck was starting to get unbearable and his vision has started to get blurred with the loss of blood. He could feel all his will power leaving him as it was getting harder to support himself with the lack of strength. The more he felt week the more Sungmin’s grip on his waist was hardening as he more hungrily.

Then suddenly Kyuhyun saw something in the corner of his eyes, a sharp splinter protruding from the broken wall of the stall.

Kyuhyun smiled softly at the thought that crossed his mind. He pull all his energy into looping his shaky arms around Sungmin’s shoulders and murmured, “Sungmin!”

The vampire on his neck paused what he was doing to look at the paled man in his arms. Kyuhyun’s eyes narrowed to half crescents as he smiled at a perplexed Sungmin, his own blood dripping down the other's chin.

“Goodbye!” It was all Kyuhyun said before he swiftly turned both of them and walked backwards into the splinter. The sharp wood pierced Kyuhyun from behind, going through his lungs and into Sungmin’s heart.

Sungmin gasped in surprise as the piece of wood penetrated his heart. He lowered his eyes to where their bodies connected with the deadly piece and then looked back into Kyuhyun’s eyes.

A single tear was gliding down his cheek as he kept smiling at Sungmin.

To his surprise Sungmin returned the smile and dipped his head to peck the other’s lips.

Then Sungmin murmured his last words in the other’s ear.

“Thank you.”
