High School Stereotypes

Description

Join Jessica Jung, an ordinary kid as she journeys through her new high school life and meets various people and makes new friends.

Foreword

So here I was, in a completely unfamiliar place. A new surrounding, new people, a completely different culture and most importantly, a new high school. It was already senior year for me, but dad's new job had us travelling to the other end of the world. It was highly inconvenient and I hated that I had to leave my friends from my previous high school though really, there was nothing that I could have done.

The campus was pretty huge, definitely larger than the one back in my hometown. At least this made me just a tad bit excited. I mean, who wouldn't be?

I made my way into the school grounds cautiously, eyes sweeping about curiously as I did so. I looked like a pretty normal high school kid, with dyed brunette hair permed into soft curls and in a soft blue button down and shorts, light make up on my face. A few people were staring at me, probably thinking "who the hell is this oddball?" while many others were - well, probably didn't even notice me. It wasn't a surprise, considering how huge the school was. There would surely be people that you've never met before even though you've schooled together for quite a while.

With a slightly trembling fist, I knocked on the door of the school counsellor's office. It took me a while to find out where it was, a few questions asked directed towards the school janitor, and here I was.

"Come in." A croaky voice called out to me. Without leaving a moment’s hesitation for myself, I lifted my arm to place a clammy palm on the doorknob. With a turn of the doorknob, the door swung open to reveal a scrawny little woman, okay well, I must have exaggerated. She was thin, and weathered with age, someone that looks to be in her mid-fifties, but definitely not bony or scrawny. Someone, who looked pretty wise, which I presume to make a great counsellor that gives great advice.

My eyes wandered then, to the only other presence in the room who was sitting on the couch situated at one corner of the room. She had really smooth black hair, so dark that her face looked really pale. Or was she really just pale? She had long side-swept bangs covering her right eye. I could see a thin line of eyeliner on her only visible eye, and in this case, her left eye and she was wearing black hoops for earrings and gold ear cuffs. Her sneakers had tiny studs arounds the edges. Heck, even her belt that held up her light blue skinny jeans had studs. She had on a once again, black, long-sleeved shirt with a round collar. It showed her collarbones and I have to admit, it made her look kind of attractive.

An emo.

She seemed to be writing in a book with black casings, or perhaps, drawing on them? I'm not exactly sure, but she was actually completely disregarding the fact that someone had just entered the room as never once did she lift her head to look.

"Ah! Jessica Jung, am I right?" The croaky voice from earlier made me turn my attention away from the girl. With a tight smile, I made my way to a desk before taking a seat opposite the counsellor just as she had gestured me to. "Here is your timetable, your keys to your locker, a pamphlet explaining about club activities after school, a booklet of the school's rules and regulations, and what is it that I've forgotten?"

I sat there completely bewildered as she slid stuff across her desk and right into my hands in a haste. I was even more startled when she clapped her hands together, a toothy grin plastered on her face as she stood up.

"Ah yes, Taeyeon?"

I felt myself tensing up as the girl in the corner of the room seemed to have frozen up in her actions of drawing in her journal. Finally, after what seemed like eternity, she lifted her head to stare at me, and oddly, not at the counsellor. I could feel her intense gaze piercing into mine, leaving me to gulp down whatever that was stuck in my throat nervously. Then, slowly, she turned her gaze to the counsellor, as if questioning what she was going to ask of her earlier.

"I need you to show Ms Jung, who's new, around the school and be her guide here. You have most of your classes together which is why I've chosen you! So chop chop, off you go!"

Okay, screw my earlier judgement of her being a wise woman, now she seemed like just an old hag to me. Someone who looked really keen to be rid of a new kid like me from herself. And then, something dawned on me. Why would she let an emo, be my guide? I mean, surely, she would have asked this favor from someone who would actually talk and explain stuff to me.

Oh.

Because if she's also Taeyeon’s counsellor, then this way, she could get the emo kid to talk to me since she would have no choice, and I, the new kid, would be taken care of. Which leaves her rid of both of us. Fine, maybe she was wise, no wait, she's just really sly.

And evil. Mean. With a crooked mind. Irresponsib- oh well.
