Stupid Nerves.

Temptation

It was cold and rainy, and I was already sniffling as we drove through the streets, making our way to our destination without exchanging words, the only thing filling the silence being the radio that played quietly in the background. My mind was filled with thoughts rushing in multiple ways, unable to settle on one subject as possible scenarios and outcomes tangled together to create a jumbled mess in my head.

I tried to settle the tight knots in my stomach and rubbed my clammy palms on the fabric of my jeans more times than I could care to remember. My mind was my worst enemy at the moment and I was powerless against it.

“What if he doesn’t like me? What if, I don’t know, what if he makes you break up with me?” I fiddled a little with my hands hanging in my lap, a nervous habit of mine.

I pouted as Seunghyun laughed at me and my nervous state, his eyes not leaving the road as he continued to drive. Of course he was completely at ease with the situation, it wasn’t as if he was going to be judged in only a matter of minutes; it wasn’t like he had to make a great first impression.

“Hyo, come on baby,” He chuckled, finally glancing over at me as we stopped at a red light. “My dad’s going to love you. What isn’t there to love? You’re absolutely perfect.”

I watched in awe as Seunghyun reached over and grabbed my hand, bringing it to his mouth and lightly brushing his lips against my knuckles. My heart had already been beating nervously in my chest, but at the gesture it felt as if it were going into overdrive as I stared into the sincere, eyes of my boyfriend, his reassuring, dimpled smile making me give him a shy grin in return. I felt myself relax a bit as he kept our fingers laced together, resting on the middle console while he continued to drive on.

My nerves dwindled down to practically nothing as I listened to him hum along to the Killers song playing on the radio, his long fingers tapping lightly on the steering wheel. If there was anything that could put me at ease, it was Seunghyun’s singing. He denied the fact that he had a great voice, but I knew he was just being bashful because I had heard him sing on multiple occasions and the raw talent he possessed was not something you could just ignore.

“We’re here.” I was brought out of my finally calming thoughts by the sound of Seunghyun’s excited tone and I glanced up in shock and slight horror at the site of his house sitting right before us while he pulled into the driveway, parking next to the black BMW sedan that I assumed belonged to his dad. I hadn’t even noticed us pulling into a neighborhood; I was so focused on seeking some kind of ease for my nerves. But there was his house, and I was once again faced with the inevitable. My nerves were hitting full force again like before, and I still felt myself staring out the window even when Seunghyun was out of the car, walking around to my side.

My door suddenly swung open, and I was barely able to unbuckle my seatbelt before I was out of the car. He instantly grabbed my hand, a reassuring smile on his face as he spoke to me. “My dad’s a really cool guy. You have no reason to be nervous, babe. Now let’s go inside; I’m hungry.” He sent me a quick wink before tugging me gently up the sidewalk. I tried to calm my nerves; I didn’t usually get nervous this easily.

But this was different.

Meeting Seunghyun’s dad was a major deal because I actually valued his thoughts on me. If he was anyone else his opinion wouldn’t matter, but Seunghyun’s dad wasn’t just some person. He was a big part of my boyfriend life and I knew how important it was to Seunhyun that the two of us got along, and I was determined to make sure that he liked me.

After he had opened the door and led me into his home, the next few moments went painfully slow as he called for his dad, practically hiding me behind his larger frame as if I was some sort of surprise to be shown and not just his girlfriend who he was introducing. I couldn’t help but smile at the excitement that was practically radiating off of him as he gave my hand a gentle squeeze behind his back.

The sound of heavy footsteps making their way to the door was all I heard before a slow and deep voice met my ears.

“What’s behind your back there, Hyun-ah?” Seunghyun’s father sounded amused and I felt myself relaxing as the thought of a tense, angry, brooding man left my mind and put me at instant ease. “Or should I say who?”

“Dad, I would like you to meet my girlfriend, Hyosung” Seunghyun began to tug me forward and I shyly made a move to stand next to him, finally coming face to face with the man I had been terrified of meeting.

Seunhyun and his dad shared such similar qualities that you could tell they were obviously father and son, but Seunghyun also didn’t look like a replica of the man before me, making it obvious that he got most of his looks from his mom. Mr. Moon smiled brightly at me.

“Hyo, this is my dad” Seunghyun continued on and I reached out automatically to shake the hand of the tall man before me. But just before our hands touched, mine snapped back on reflex as I let out an embarrassing sneeze.

Ugh!

I felt heat rush to my cheeks as I stared wide eyed up at Mr. Moon who blinked at me in shock, obviously not expecting the sudden outburst.

“I-I’m so sorry, I-”

Although I didn’t get to finish my stuttered apology as Mr. Moon only chuckled, his friendly smile still intact as he stared down at me, and I felt my body relax when I felt Seunghyun’s hand rubbing reassuring circles on my back.

“No need to apologize Hyosung-ah, the weather here has been causing a nasty bug to go around.” His eyes were nothing but kind as he regarded me and I sent him a grateful smile, feeling more comfortable in his presence.

Seunghyun’s arm wrapped around my waist and I relaxed into his side while he kissed my forehead.

“How about we get you some cold medicine, yeah?” He suggested and I smiled up at him before nodding. “Dad, we’ll be down for dinner in a minute.”

Mr. Moon only smiled understandingly at us, making his way further into the house, continuing his way in while Seunghyun stopped to lead me upstairs.

“Make yourself at home, Hyo!” I heard Mr. Moon call from downstairs, and Seunghyun gave me a knowing smirk, making me playfully roll my eyes at him.

“Told you he’d love you.” He gloated as we made our way into the bathroom where he immediately began to search the medicine cabinet after instructing me to sit down on the toilet seat.

“Seunghyun-ah, I barely had a conversation with him!” I laughed, feeling so much more at ease than I did before.

Seunghyun pulled out a small dark medicine tube, pausing to read over the instructions before popping the lid open.

“This should help,” Seunghyun mumbled.

“I really don’t think I’m sick,” I protested. Perhaps it was my allergies hitting me, but if I had been sick than I probably would have known it, right?

“No, no, I have to take care of my beautiful girlfriend, don’t I?” He retaliated, pouring two small white pills into his palm. He grabbed a small plastic cup and filled it with water from the sink before crouching in front of me, his eyes meeting mine.

I took the water and pills from him, popping them easily in my mouth. I swallowed them easily, and I raised an eyebrow to still find Seunghyun crouched in front of me.

“I’m really happy you’re finally meeting my dad,” He murmured, growing serious. He grabbed my hands, his larger hands enveloping my smaller ones.

“I know it means a lot to you.” I replied, breaking out in a bashful smile.

“It does.” Seunghyun replied, his elated grin from earlier returning. “And I can tell my dad likes you, Babe. I really can.”

“You really think so?”

“I know so. It would be physically impossible for him not to like you.” He cooed, leaning closer towards me to press a fond kiss to my lips. I smiled into it, letting out a quiet giggle when he tried getting closer.

However, I made no move to push him away. Instead, I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him close, stealing another kiss. His lips were soft and warm against mine, reassuring and firm. My stomach was churning again, but not in nerves; it was churning in butterflies. My boyfriend always had such a great effect on me. He could make me feel like I was weightless, like I literally had nothing to worry about in this world. As long as I had him, and he had me.

“Well, we’d better not keep my dad waiting,” Seunghyun said finally, and I felt disappointed when he pulled away, even though he still held onto my hand as we exited the bathroom. We headed downstairs, and the strong scent of spices hit me as we made our way into the kitchen, me once again trailing behind Seunghyun until he pulled me forward to take my place by his side while his arm rested loosely over my shoulders .

Mr. Moon had been tending to the source of the smell in the oven when he sensed our presence and straightened up, turning to give me and Seunghyun a bright smile. “Did you find the medicine?”

Nodding, I decided to speak up instead of remaining the silent, shy girlfriend. “Yes, we did, thank you Mr. Moon.”

“You’re welcome, love.” He beamed, taking off the black oven mitts that had covered his hands to wipe off the perspiration on his forehead. “Seunghyun will you set the table for me? The lasagna is almost done; I just have to wait a few more minutes,”

I watched in fascination as Mr. Moon began to go back and forth in the kitchen, making sure the side dishes were ready to be served while the main meal sat in the oven, cooking and spreading a delicious aroma around the kitchen and throughout the house. We had family dinners at my house every night, but it was always my mom who did the cooking. She was the stay-at-home wife who did all of the cooking and cleaning, while my father went off to work to bring home the money.

They were a little old fashioned and not nearly as young as Mr. Moon, Seunghyun told me before; Mr and Ms. Moon have him after they graduate from high school. Thats why Mr. Moon and Seunghyun look like brother instant of a father and son.

It was different seeing Seunghyun and just his dad together, and to see Mr. Moon being both the stay-at-home dad and the provider as well, but I could tell that he adored Seeunghyun and Seunghyun looked up to his father and respected him greatly just by watching the two interact.

“Sure thing dad,” Seunghyun removed his arm from around my shoulders and moved to the cabinets, beginning to grab plates to set out. I stood awkwardly in the middle of the kitchen for only a moment before offering my own services, not wanting to seem rude.

“I’ll help,” I piped up, earning a smirk from Seunghyun as he mouthed ‘ up’, making me stick my tongue out at him.

“Thank you Hyosung,” Mr. Moon replied, an appreciative grin being sent my way. It seemed that this two gentelmen always carried a smile on their face. It was rare to see Seunghyun not smiling when he spoke with others or sometimes even when he was just thinking to himself; he was such a cheerful guy and it was one of the many reasons why I cared for him so much.

After Seunghyun directed me to where everything was, the two made our way to the dining room, setting things up as they should be while teasing and bantering with each other playfully. I felt so much better than I had when we had first arrived and the smiles that Seunghyun and Mr. Moon carried were contagious as I found myself smiling and laughing along with the both of them before we had even settled down to eat.

“Here you go baby,” I blushed as my boyfriend pulled my chair out, waiting for me to sit before he moved to take a seat next me.

Mr. Moon was seated across from us, and he was cutting into the large tray of lasagna with a knife. Seunghyun didn’t wait to grab any of the side dishes that Mr. Moon also prepared for us, and I politely asked for Seunghyun to pass anything over to me when he was finished grabbing his own.

“So,” Mr. Moon started as he scooped a piece of lasagna on his own plate, “I’m curious to how you two met. Care to tell me, son?” He passed the tray to us over the table, and Seunghyun grabbed a large piece and plopped it on his plate before passing it my way.

I really hoped Seunghyun wouldn’t tell his dad where we really met. Seunghyun and I met at a house party after a Friday Football game; our team had been victorious in beating our long time rivals. Most of the cheerleading squad was always expected to go to the parties, along with the football players, so of course I was there. But of course I didn’t think Seunghyun’s dad would find that amusing, like Seunghyun and I did.

“We met each other through mutual friends.” He told Mr. Moon casually. I took a bite into the lasagna but found it a bit too hot to eat; it slightly burned the inside of my mouth, but I forced myself to swallow it down.

“And how long have you two been together?” Mr. Moon asked.

This time, I decided to answer. “We’ve been together since the very start of the Football season, for about 2 months or so.”

Mr. Moon nodded at this before taking a sip of his drink.

“The food is amazing by the way, Mr. Moon.” I complimented. I really did mean it, though. The food was amazing. The lasagna was at the right temperature to eat now, and it was probably the best lasagna I’ve ever had.

“Thank you,” Mr. Moon replied with a grin. He set his fork down and his elbows pressed onto the table, shifting in his seat a bit. “So, tell me a bit more about yourself, yeah? What do you like to do?”

I could see Seunghyun smiling to himself from the corner of his eye. That made me happy, seeing that I wasn’t giving a horrible impression so far.

“Well, I’m part of the school’s cheerleading squad.” I told him. “I love tumbling, dancing," My schedule had always been quite hectic, especially around this time of year. With dance recitals coming up and Football games nearly every Friday, I had a lot of after-school practices.

Mr. Moon’ grin, however, faltered a bit from that information. His attention was back on his food, and he mumbled, “You like to cheerlead, huh?”

I glanced hesitantly at Seunghyun, wondering if Mr. Moon didn’t approve of cheerleading. Seunghyun was busy eating his food, not sensing the change of composure.

“I love cheerleading.” I mumbled.

We ate in silence for a few moments, and I began to worry that maybe I said something wrong until Mr. Moon spoke again.

“How long have you been cheerleading?”

I found myself grinning from the question, my passion for the spot shining through. “I’ve been cheerleading ever since I was a kid. My mom took me in, and at first I didn’t want to do it. But I’ve been in love with it ever since; it was one of the greatest things she’s ever done for me.” My mom was a strong supporter of my activities, although she hasn’t been able to go to many of the Football games since she was so swamped with the house. However, when I was a child she used to go to nearly every single cheerleading competition I had. It meant a lot to me.

Mr. Moon was gazing at me with a thoughtful expression, listening to every single thing I said. I looked down from his heavy gaze and continued eating, silently hoping Seunghyun could step in to say something, to somewhat ease the awkward silence.

“Hyo and I are practically perfect together,” Seunghyun said after awhile. “Since she’s a cheerleader and I’m a Football player, you know?”

Mr. Moon regarded his son’s statement with half interest, although it looked like he was thinking of something else entirely. My attention was diverted when I felt Seunghyun’s hand squeeze softly on my thigh, hoping to make me at ease again. And it worked; I shot him a thankful smile, one that he returned.

We ate the rest of the dinner in a more comfortable silence, and pretty soon, Mr. Moon got up and started putting the dishes in the sink.

“Would you like me to help do the dishes?” I suggested.

“No, thank you Hyosung-ah, but Seunghyun can do the dishes later.” Mr. Moon replied with the warm grin from earlier. I, however, still grabbed my dish, along with Seunghyun’s, and put them off in the sink.

“I hate doing dishes,” Seunghyun muttered to me as he brushed by, carrying a bowl from one of the side dishes.

“Now, we all know that the father’s job is to embarrass their child, right?” Mr. Moon spoke up with a low smirk, heading into the living room. I saw Seunghyun’s face crumble, his cheeks slightly flushing and couldn’t help but giggle at his already rising embarrassment. “And I’m planning on doing just that. He has never had a girl over before, so I’ve been waiting for this day.” His tone was humorous and amused, and he pulled out a thick scrapbook from a drawer next to the TV.

“Dad,” Seunghyun groaned a little as we headed into the living room.

“Come, sit down, both of you.” Mr. Moon stated, sitting on the couch and opening the scrapbook. Seunghyun and I sat on either side of him, and I couldn’t help but chuckle when I saw a few pages full of nothing but baby photos of my boyfriend.

My boyfrienf didn’t look all that amused, although he couldn’t stifle his grin, and Mr. Moon seemed to be enjoying himself.

“This,” Mr. Moon began proudly, “is Seunghyun when he was a baby. This was when we first brought him home,” He pointed to a picture on the top corner of the page, and there was a baby with absolutely no hair and what looked like darker eyes. I was grinning now upon seeing this, while Seunghyun was rolling his eyes.

Mr. Moon slowly flipped through a few pages; the first few were full of nothing but the newborn pictures. He muttered, “Jihyun loved taking photos.”

Seunghyun had mentioned before that his parents were divorced, and that his mom lived somewhere in Seoul. He never spoke much about his mom, now that I thought about it.

But when I could see Seunghyun was older in these photos, with his thick head of hair, swapped in many directions, I couldn’t help but reach out and stop Mr. Moon from turning the page. They were too precious to just flip through, really. There was one with Seunghyun wearing a long, white sock up his arm like some kind of glove, and he was grinning lopsidedly at the camera. He was much too cute.

“He liked to wear my socks,” Mr. Moon chuckled.

He flipped through again and there was a Halloween one. This one had Mr. Moon holding Seunghyun, and Mr. Moon looked a lot younger, with his hair longer than it was now and a boyish grin stretching along his face. I could tell he held Seunghyun with pride, and Seunghyun was grinning from ear to ear, holding up a small, black bag full of candy. I couldn’t quite tell what Seugnhyun was dressed as, since the hood of his costume was off his head, but it looked like brown fur.

“You were so cute,” I told Seunghyun, unable to stop smiling. He was such a bright baby.

Seunghyun simply pouted at me, his arms crossed over his chest.

I then saw a photo, where Mr. Moon lingered on, with a woman holding Seunghyun’s hand. She look really pretty. For some reason, I could instantly tell this was Seunghyun’s mom, Jihyun. However, Seunghyun was a bit older in this picture, and Jihyun had this tired expression in her face. I could tell her smile was somewhat forced. I guess I couldn’t blame her; raising a child wasn’t easy, was it?

“When do you need to be home?” Mr. Moon asked me, closing the book after all the pictures had been looked at. I was still giggling lightly after seeing a picture of Seunghyun wearing his mom’s makeup at around five in nothing but Power Ranger underwear. Seunghyun was beat red, but laughed along as well with his father, both had been recalling the memory, although Mr. Moon had a more accurate recollection while Seunghyun only remembered bits and pieces.

I pulled out my phone from my back pocket to check the time, seeing it was only a few minutes after eight and remembering my mother’s instructions to be home before it got too late due to the fact that it was a school night; I really hadn’t noticed the time go by so fast.

“I should be going now actually,” I said, sharing a look with Seunghyun as all three of us stood up and made our way to the front door. “Thank you so much for dinner Mr. Moon, it was lovely.”

I was pleasantly surprised when Mr. Moon pulled me into a warm hug and welcomed the affection, before pulling back and moving back to Seunghyun’s side.

“The pleasure was all mine Hyosung-ah.” He smiled brightly. “You’re welcome back anytime so don’t be a stranger, alright?”

I didn’t have to look at Seunghyun to know he was beaming; his arm that squeezed my waist was proof of his happiness. The night was a complete success and my previous worries before we had arrived earlier in the evening seemed so silly now.

After exchanging goodbyes and promises of seeing one another soon, Seunghyun and I went out to his car where he opened the door for me, waiting until I was in and buckled up before he jogged over to the driver’s side.

“Go ahead and say it,” I said, looking over at Seunghyun with a smirk as he backed his car out before pulling onto the road to drive me home.

“Say what?” He asked, tone completely innocent, but the smug glint in his eye was proof that he knew what I was talking about.

“Seriously?” I giggled, rolling my eyes lightly and crossing my arms over my chest.

“Oh,” He drawled, turning to look at me with a cocky smirk as we stopped at a stop sign. “You mean how I was right?”

He laughed when I rolled my eyes again and leaned over, giving me a chaste kiss, before a car behind us honked impatiently, and we were driving again.

“I told you he’d love you baby,” he said, the smile still on his face as he focused on the road. “You had nothing to worry about.”

And as he reached over to grab onto my hand I couldn’t wipe my own smile off of my face because he was right, I didn’t have anything to worry about at all.
