The silence was piercing and the only sound she could hear was her own heart pounding loudly in her head. She held her breath and continued to walk further and further into his house.

Then, she heard something. Something subtle, yet startling. Muffled sobs floated out the crack-opened door. 

She knew that voice.

All thoughts of revenge left her. Even though the image of that kind face that she would never be able to see again flashed repeatedly in her mind, she lost all motivation to carry out her plan.

All that was important to her was comforting the crying boy in the other room.

But the moment she had stepped into the room, she had also sealed her heart's loyalty to someone else.
