A Tragic Mistake

A Punishment Unwarranted

Kyuhyun admits that he might have been a little unreasonable. He shouldn’t have taken that one drink too many and went home drunk. He shouldn’t have shouted at Sungmin. His boyfriend had yelled at him the very moment he stumbled back into the apartment at 2am. Kyuhyun was not a habitual drunk. No, he had quit that habit years ago, when he first met his one and only, his Sungmin. No, the reason for being drunk was that on that fateful day, he had met Heechul and Kangin, his former professors from the University he graduated from. The two men, even though at constant loggerheads with one another, never failed to support and encourage their dubbed ‘Star Student’ through the years of his studies. They had insisted he drank with them. He had protested he had to be home but they dragged him to the bar. Once at the bar, Kyuhyun became like a whole different person. He drank enough for three and more. Although Kyuhyun was one who could hold his liquor well, that much was still too much for him to handle, and he had to be sent home by the other two. They left him at the lobby of his apartment and went back respectively.

Kyuhyun struggled to remember the events of that night. He knew he shouldn’t have shouted at Sungmin, but then again, Sungmin shouldn’t have shouted at him, either. Why can he not see, not understand that Kyuhyun wasn’t perfect, and that he was, too, only human? Why couldn’t he just wait and talked about it the next morning? But no, he had insisted on shouting at him at 2am in the night and creating a ruckus. Kyuhyun had been gravely provoked by Sungmin’s words and had finally shouted at him, “Leave me alone!” The brunette looked around at the desolate apartment. It felt so cold, so empty without the presence of his Sungmin, to make everything bright and cheerful. His last words before he left were still hovering in the still air, bouncing off the walls, echoing inside his mind: “Well if that’s what you want, be alone then!” chasing off the voice, he began to call all their relatives and friends. Everyone was full of sympathy to Kyuhyun but no one seemed to know where Sungmin might be. Kyuhyun suspects that they all knew. They just did not want to tell him. This is a big conspiracy, and they were all in on the plot. Kyuhyun knows it.

He dragged himself through the week, not once stepping out of the house. All day, Kyuhyun sat and stared at a wall, ferociously pouncing on the phone each time it rang, and then snapping at the poor soul on the other end, once he has ascertained that it was not his precious Sungmin. Kyuhyun missed him very much and shouted and ranted in his apartment for the following days to no particular being. He cried and he starved himself. He lived only on water. The phone rang lesser and lesser and Kyuhyun was sure no one cares about him, much less his darling. Then to top it all off, on the fourth day of his demise, he accidentally knocked over the empty fruit basket atop his dining table, where he found a note that was left for him before the writer of that letter disappeared forever; the words on that note were simple, yet the meaning in those words tore through Kyuhyun’s heart as he let out a primal scream. The note read:

I am never coming back, ever.

After that incident, Kyuhyun withdrew even deeper into himself. The phone had stopped ringing altogether, as he called no one and no one called him. Even his own relatives did not care. Kyuhyun was willing to do anything to get the love of his life back. But what was the point, when the love of his life didn’t want to come back? He stumbled to the balcony and sank down on his knees. He cried out in despair to the Heavens. “How did this happen? Why did this happen? We were supposed to be happy, happy together! What have I done that’s wrong? What is my crime? Tell me what I have done to warrant such a punishment! TELL ME!” The Heavens gave no answer or indication that they have heard. Kyuhyun dropped to all fours, panting, energy spent. “Please…” Still no answer whatsoever. That was the last straw, and it broke Kyuhyun inside. He started mauling the furniture, tearing down curtains, a wild look in his eyes. After the initial bout of energy was diminished, he sank into depression. He huddled in a corner of his room, where he spoke to himself and laughed and cried at the same time.

A couple of weeks later, the next door neighbors, the Choi brothers, noticed with concern that the neighboring apartment that had been noisy for days had suddenly turned quiet. Worried that something had happened, the Choi brothers stopped the neighborhood police guard, Leeteuk, from his patrolling and voiced their concerns. As they neared the apartment, all three noticed a weird smell coming from within the apartment. Sensing something was amiss, Leeteuk quickly broke down the door. It was eerily quiet inside, and the only sound was of the threes’ breathing. All the doors were open, less one which was closed tight. After checking the rooms one by one and discovering nothing but ruined furniture and broken decorations each time, the trio finally decided to open the last door. What they saw inside drew a collective, horrified gasp from all of them. Choi Minho quickly dashed behind his older brother while Leeteuk reached a trembling hand for his walkie-talkie to inform the station.

Choi Siwon shook his head as he took in the details in the room, from the motionless man lying on the bed, scratches of all sizes evident all over his body, to the photo frame still gripped tightly in his hand, rigor mortis already set in motion, to the messily scrawled words on the opposite wall, the last message from the man to the one he loves most. Tear streaks could still be seen on the man’s pale cheeks. The words on the wall, even as it is disarranged it still was legible, read:

Kyu loves Minnie

Without hesitation, he took out his trusted Bible from the back of his pocket and murmured a prayer that this man would make it safely to the arms of Heaven.

"Oh Holy Lord, pray have heart for this man,

For this was a punishment unwarranted..."
