Sweet and Fluffy

Description

You’re ready to cry as you sit down on the bench, watching all of the couples walk by. Your boyfriend never showed up, and now you’re there by yourself. You’re at an amusement park, already paid, and all alone.

You sit there for a while, trying to figure out what to do. Your stomach grumbles, and you decide that you’d better get some food. You get up, seeing a cotton candy stand. Not exactly an stomach-filler, but you’re depressed. You want sugar. Your mouth waters as you watch the vendor mix up the sugary goodness. Maybe he can see how depressed you are, because he asks you what’s wrong. When you explain it to him, he fills the cotton candy extra full, and tells you to feel better. You thank him, beginning to walk away. You can barely see, he’s given you so much cotton candy.

You feel your treat bump into something, and you let it go in your shock, apologizing before it even hits the ground.

Except it doesn’t hit the ground. The person catches it, then peeks out from behind it to look at you. It’s Sungmin. Lee Sungmin. “Oh, annyeong!” he says, in that adorable voice.

You bow and apologize again. A little bit of cotton candy has stuck to his bottom lip. You really want to take it off, but fear that it will make him feel awkward. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to…”

He shrugs, handing you back your cotton candy. “I got a mouthful of it. Can I have some?” he asks politely.

You can’t help but hold the sweet and fluffy stuff out to him, letting him tear off a piece and put it in his mouth. “Mmmm, that’s good. Thank you!”

“You can share it with me if you want, Oppa. I don’t think I’m going to be able to eat it all by myself,” you admit, looking at your feet.

“Really?!” he pulls off another piece and stuffs it into his mouth. “Thank you!” He looks around, then asks, “do you want to go on the ferris wheel with me?”

“ME?!” you squeak.

He nods. “Of course! Then we can eat it together, while looking down at the park. Why, do you not want to?”

You shake your head hard enough to hurt your neck. Before you know it, you’re on the Ferris wheel together, in your own little cart. You bite off a piece of cotton candy and ask, “Why are you here today, Oppa?”

He looks down at the ground through the sides of the cart. “I was here with my members, but when we finished filming for the variety show, they all had different schedules, and when I was ready to leave, I ran into you. Must have been fate.”

At the word “fate”, you blush, hiding behind the pink cotton candy. It’s already mostly gone, so there’s not much to hide behind.

“What about you? Why were you here all by yourself?” he asks you. You bite your lip. In the surprise of meeting Sungmin, you’d almost forgotten all about being stood up. Now all of the memories were rushing back to you, bringing tears to your eyes.

“I was stood up,” you say, not able to hold it in. “My boyfriend and I… we’d been planning this for weeks, and then I got here, and he never shows up. Finally I got a call that said it wasn’t going to work. Some boyfriend, huh?” You look down at your feet, unable to meet Sungmin’s eyes.

Suddenly you feel him lift up your chin. “I don’t think he deserved someone as nice as you. Not if he’s going to make you cry. I never want to make a girl cry.”

You smile, looking at his dark brown eyes. He’s so sweet. Just like the cotton candy in your hands. “Thank you, oppa,” you say, your face flushing.

After the ferris wheel, you finish the cotton candy, yet still stay together. You go on a roller coaster, hiding in his shoulder, while he just laughs. You try carnival rings, embarrassed when you fail, but when Sungmin tries them, you can’t help but cheer. He’s so cute, it’s hard to see just how cool he is, even as he wins an adorable little teddy bear and hands it to you, saying he wouldn’t have won it without you, even when you say that you didn’t do anything. You almost feel happy that you got stood up. If you hadn’t, you would never have been there with Sungmin.

The daylight fades, and when you look up, the stars are coming out. You nudge him and point up. “I’m naming that one Sungmin,” you say, pointing to a bright one near Orion’s belt.

“Why?” he asks, following your gaze.

You smile, letting your hand fall back to your side. “Because that way, even when this night is all over and gone, I can still see Sungmin every night.”

You feel a warmth on your hand, and look down to see that it’s Sungmin’s, closed around your fingers. He lifts your hand so it’s in front of your face, not letting go.

“You don’t need to name a star Sungmin. Because I’m right here. I’m really here. If I squeeze your hand, you can feel it. Does a star have to be a dream just because it’s far away? No. I met you because you hit me in the head with cotton candy. And because of that, I had a much better day that I thought I was going to. Because of you.”

Your heart is beating fast, and as he lets go f your hand, you can still feel the warmth of his skin. “But… you… you’re just like the cotton candy,” you say, stepping back. “You’re sweet and soft, but you’ll melt away before I know it.”

He takes your hand, pulling you back towards him. You’re only centimeters away from his face, looking into his dark eyes that reflect the many colors of the park, glittering behind you, as he says “but that’s the thing with cotton candy. You can always get more.”

And then he pulls you toward him, and your lips meet. Ever so soft, ever so gentle. You feel tears run down your cheeks, even as you smile against his lips. You can still taste the cotton candy.
