Nana's Smile

Unhappy Princess

Lizzy’s heart felt content. The gentle breeze that played with her hair made her feel tranquil and calm. The constant stress of thinking about her schedule and promotions and performances was gone and felt like a distant sensation to what her heart was feeling. She opened her eyes and looked at her surroundings. A sunflower field in a beautiful fall afternoon. The sun was about to set in the horizon, tainting everything with its orange glow. She felt something hard against her back; the trunk of a tall tree, its branches protective above her head. Lizzy smiled softly and was about to close her eyes again, ready to drift off to much needed slumber.

A sweet voice called her name, over and over. Lizzy was slightly startled, wondering who was accompanying her in that dreamy place. As she looked around, she spotted the silhouette of a young lady. Nana, dressed in a white cocktail dress. Lizzy looked down at herself briefly, discovering she was wearing a similar dress. Nana’s back was to her, the older girl was looking at Lizzy over her shoulder, giving her a beckoning smile. She then faced the sunset, the strands of her long hair appeared more golden than usual, even if it seemed impossible. Lizzy bit her bottom lip as she stared at Nana; of course she was facing the sun, Nana loved the warmth.

She finally decided to get up from her sitting spot, walking slowly towards where Nana stood. Her breathing was steady, and unlike the many times she approached Nana, her breathing was calm and steady, irradiating confidence. She was a few steps away from Nana when the latter turned around in her heel, startling Lizzy and making her stand still. Nana gave her a sweet, genuinely happy smile before closing the distance between Lizzy and herself, engulfing her in a hug. Lizzy gasped before she wrapped her arms around Nana’s shoulders, pulling her in further. It had been a while since Nana had hugged her so tight, but the feeling of being in the arms of an angel still remained. Somewhere in the middle of their hug, Lizzy felt a pleasurable ice burning sensation in her left shoulder, exposed by her dress. As she looked at Nana from the corner of her eye, she realized that the very pleasant sensation was the feeling of Nana’s lips pressed against her shoulder. Lizzy could feel her heart racing even more and a powerful blush taking over her cheeks.

“What are we doing here, Nana?” The younger girl asked, pulling away from the hug just slightly so she could look into Nana’s eyes. The latter simply bit her bottom lip and shrugged her shoulders.

“Why does it matter?” She asked, the corners of her lips tugging upwards in a beautiful and ample smile. Although Lizzy felt even further confused by Nana’s answer, she couldn’t help but return the beautiful smile that Nana was giving her. She could have stared at it all day; it had been so long since that last time she had seen the older girl smiling so brightly. “We’re finally alone, Lizzy-ah. Just the two of us.”

“B-But… I still don’t understand.” Nana shook her head, still smiling at Lizzy’s stuttering as she tightened her arms her midsection. One of her hands then came to rest on Lizzy’s cheek, tracing it with her fingertips. Lizzy held her breath for a few seconds in response, not knowing how else to react to such a gentle caress.

“What is there to understand?” Nana leaned in and placed a lingering kiss on the corner of Lizzy’s lips, remaining close and letting her warm breath fan against the younger girl’s slightly opened mouth. Lizzy didn’t even have the chance to fully realize what Nana had done when the older girl pressed another kiss right in the middle of Lizzy’s lips before swiftly reaching the unkissed corner. They both had their eyes softly closed by now, their arms still around each other. “I missed being with you… and I know you missed it too.”

“But w-what about Seungho? Did you even break up with him?” Lizzy stuttered out, opening her eyes with some difficulty, because having Nana so close to her, all she wanted to do was kiss her until she saw stars. And since Nana had already taken the first step (successfully leaving Lizzy wanting more), maybe it wasn’t such a bad idea to do just that…

“Who is Seungho?” Nana tilted her head to the side cutely, winking at Lizzy. The latter winked back and pressed her forehead to Nana’s, flirtatiously rubbing the tips of their noses together, smiling mischievously.

“No one… just some stupid guy.” Lizzy whispered against Nana’s lips before finally closing the gap between them, taking Nana’s bottom lip in-between hers tentatively, in a feathery brush. Instantly afraid of rejection, Lizzy kept her lips unmoving, anxiously waiting for Nana to take the next step and reassure her that she wanted it too. That necessary reassurance came when she felt Nana moving her lips shyly against hers. Lizzy was officially on fire.

She cupped Nana’s cheeks, gently pulling her into the kiss, and nibbling on her bottom lip. Nana was about to part her lips softly when Lizzy pulled away, effectively teasing her. She opened her eyes and found Lizzy staring back at her with a playful smile. She nuzzled her nose against Nana’s, their lips not even inches apart from each other’s to increase the tension. Even if Lizzy had very little experience when it came to romance, the confidence that was brought to her by being finally wanted back by Nana was guiding each of her steps. Besides, she had imagined kissing Nana so many times, yet none of those fantasies could compare to the real deal.

“You have really soft lips, Nana… They’re even softer than they look.” One of her hands came to cup Nana’s chin as she breathily whispered those words, before tracing Nana’s bottom lip with the pad of her thumb. Lizzy felt blood rushing to her cheeks when Nana smiled back at her and kissed her thumb, staring back and forth between Lizzy’s eyes and her lips.

“I’m glad you like them… because they’re all yours.” Nana whispered back before crashing her lips to Lizzy’s placing one of her hands behind the younger girl’s head to make sure she wouldn’t suddenly pull away again. The two began to move their lips synchronically against each other’s, neither of them wanting to rush, but it was proven to be hard since their breathing was beginning to get heavier. Lizzy had to admit that the sound of Nana’s panting each time their lips parted and met over and over was really y. Nana bit Lizzy’s bottom lip, making her moan softly, to which Nana smiled into their kiss. Lizzy smiled too as her hands began to run from Nana’s cheeks down to her porcelain neck and then to the top of her chest, before one of her hands went to Nana’s own and interlaced their fingers together, resting their linked hands on Nana’s lower back in order to have more control of the kiss. Lizzy pulled away from the liplock, softly tugging on Nana’s bottom lip as she did so. They rested their foreheads together, their eyes still closed in pure bliss and their breathing heavy.

“I love you, Nana.” Lizzy whispered lovingly, her voice hoarse with emotion. Nana ran her hands up and down Lizzy’s back before wrapping her arms around the latter’s neck.

“I love you too, Park Sooyoung.”

Lizzy woke up, initially startled and then just purely disappointed when she realized it had all been just a dream. A perfect dream that should have never had to end. Unfortunately, she was no longer in that beautiful sunflower field but in After School’s dorm, she wasn’t wearing a white dress but her pajamas, and Nana wasn’t temptingly close to her in a heated kiss but asleep in her own bed. Lizzy whined softly and covered her face with her hands before she sat up, resting her back against the headboard of the bed. Still intoxicated by the memories of her dream, she began examining her shared room with Nana, hoping to find a magazine she could read or something that could be enough to distract her and take her mind away from Nana and the maddening love she harbored for her and that she just couldn’t keep in anymore.

She grabbed her cellphone to check the time. A small sigh of relief left her lips when she realized it was only 2 am, and that she still had a few more hours to sleep. Putting her phone down, she gazed at Nana, who still slept peacefully. And as always, she looked like an angel, snuggled up under the covers as she lay on her side and with a small smile tugging on her lips. Lizzy smiled bitterly, thinking that the ice princess was probably dreaming of Seungho. Nonetheless, she loved to see Nana smile, even if it was only when she was sleeping that she’d smile genuinely. All the fake smiles she showed for the cameras shoved in her face where just the eminent proof that the innocent, small town girl Im Jinah who moved to Seoul when she was eighteen, wishing so badly to become a supermodel, was no longer alive. She had been replaced by Im Nana, the fiercely cold and full of attitude idol who had sold her soul to the devil the moment she signed with Pledis Entertainment. It was indisputable that the After School member who had changed the most since their debut was Nana. But for Lizzy, Nana’s real change didn’t start with their success as After School, but after one incident that turned the latter’s world upside down.

Nana had been raised by her grandparents. They had been omnipresent when her parents were too busy, and being an only daughter gave her the privilege of being spoiled by them. No one could even question that she loved—loves them deeply. She had it all with them; she wasn’t even affected by the fact that her parents were never around. Back in 2009, their manager gave them a weekend off. It was the first one for Nana since their debut, so she looked forward to seeing her grandparents after nearly a year and a half. Lizzy and E-young had just joined After School, so they weren’t granted the weekend off and were forced to stay in Seoul, with scheduled dance and singing lessons. Lizzy had felt happy that morning; the sparkle of excitement in Nana’s eyes had lifted up her mood drastically and the tight hug goodbye the older girl had given her had made her heartbeat go crazy. At the time, Lizzy didn’t know she was falling for Nana; she often mistook her own feelings of love as deep admiration for the latter.

The day after that, E-young and Lizzy came back from their exhausting singing lessons at 3 pm. E-young had gone straight to bed, wanting nothing more than to take a nap. Lizzy stayed in the kitchen, cooking something for herself. Her culinary procedures were interrupted when she heard the dorm’s door being opened. She gasped upon seeing Nana, with tear tracks ruining her mascara and sobs rocking her whole body. Lizzy, unsure of what to do, went to her and gently guided her to the living room couch, making her sit down.

Lizzy asked her, in the gentlest voice she could utter, what had happened and why she was back so soon from her hometown visit. Nana managed to calm her sobs for a bit and told her; she had gone to her grandparents’ house, but they weren’t there. She tried calling them over and over but they weren’t answering. On her last try, they finally picked up the phone. Nana just asked them where they were and why they weren’t waiting for her at home, simultaneously telling them that they had really worried her for not picking up the phone. Her grandpa had answered that nothing was going on and that they just didn’t expect her to show up in the end. Before Nana had the chance to answer, her grandpa also gave her an ultimatum. If you want to see us again, you need to quit that job you have. Nana didn’t even have to think twice; her answer was a rotund ‘no’. With tears clouding her vision and before hanging up, Nana whispered an ‘I don’t deserve this’. After closing the call, Nana decided to just go back to the train station and return to Seoul.

Seeing Nana so distraught after telling her what happened, scolding herself in-between sobs for calling her grandparents so rarely and briefly for the past year and a half, Lizzy couldn’t help but throw her arms around her and pull her into a tight hug, whispering sweet words of comfort in her ear, secretly wondering how anyone could be so harsh to an angel like Nana.

The memory is bittersweet for Lizzy now. She remembers it bitterly because she had never seen Nana cry so hard, and because after that, Nana just became taciturn and quiet, and just… cold. Lizzy was always trying to get her involved with her effervescent personality, during interviews or variety shows, but Nana just became more retracted. Soon the good girl image people had of her became the image of a cold and arrogant that everyone loves and hates at the same time. It hurt Lizzy deeply because she knows that’s not Nana.

She remembers it being sweet because this is the time when she truly realized she had fallen for Im Jinah. Even if her love is unrequited, it’s the best thing she has. Loving Nana inspires her, motivates her, encourages her… it just makes her a better person. She learned to love unconditionally, not expecting Nana to love her back, but expecting Nana to be happy, even if it was in somebody else’s arms.

“You can’t sleep either?” Lizzy jumped slightly by hearing Nana’s groggy voice. She looked at the object of her insanity, who was currently facing her, still neatly tucked under the covers. Lizzy shook her head in the dark, though Nana could see her because of the moonlight that seeped through the window of their room.

“My stomach feels a little bit upset, is all.” Lizzy lied, shrugging her shoulders. She felt exasperated by her own answer; she was really tired of lying. She just wanted to tell the truth for once. And maybe this was the right time… “I had a dream.” She said simply, gulping.

“I saw you asleep when I got up to get some water, so I figured that much.” Nana joked, earning a small smile from Lizzy. The older girl also sat up in her bed, facing Lizzy. “What was it about this dream you had?”

“You loved me.” Lizzy answered, her voice full of emotion as she stared deeply into Nana’s eyes. Nana tilted her head to the side and furrowed her brows.

“Are you sure that was your dream? Well, it was a silly dream. I do love you, Lizzy-ah.” The supermodel answered with a sweet smile. Lizzy chuckled bitterly; if only Nana had meant those words in a romantic way.

“No, you haven’t understood. You were in love with me… Like I’m in love with you…” Nana widened her eyes and stared at Lizzy, with an unreadable expression on her features. Lizzy just sighed, feeling how an enormous weight was being lifted off of her shoulders. Still, she feared Nana’s rejection, even if she was already expecting it.

“I knew it.” Nana answered simply, biting her bottom lip. “I knew it, but I still hoped I could be wrong…” Lizzy looked at her confusedly. She shifted herself so that she was now sitting on the edge of her bed, facing Nana.

“You knew what?” She asked frantically, leaning forward and resting her sweaty hands on top of her knees.

“I’ve always known you’re in love with me. Always.” Nana admitted, giving Lizzy a look that was full of endearment; or at least that’s what Lizzy wanted to believe. Deep inside, she knew Nana’s look was just full of pity. Lizzy couldn’t believe this was happening.

“T-Then why did you never confront me about it?” Lizzy’s tone of voice wasn’t recriminating, but purely confused. Nana looked away.

“Like I told you, I was hoping my guessing was wrong and that you weren’t in love with me.” The older girl whispered, shrugging her shoulders.

“How do you feel about it?” She asked in an almost desperate tone. Nana opened but no words came out. She hesitated.

“It can’t happen, Lizzy. Not because we’re both girls, but because I’m in love with Seungho. I really am, Lizzy.” Nana answered zealously, gauging at Lizzy’s reaction. The latter bit her bottom lip and looked down at her lap; even if she was already expecting that answer, it didn’t change the fact that it hurt like hell.

“Why do you love him, Nana? I’ve never seen you smile genuinely while being with him, not once. I’ve heard you crying way too many times… but in my dream, you looked so happy…” Lizzy was surprised to see Nana’s eyes b with tears in the moonlight.

“Sooyoung, please… I don’t mean to break your heart, but I can’t force mine to feel differently. Seungho might make me cry sometimes, but he does make me happy.” Nana insisted. Lizzy just sighed, shaking her head and getting under the covers again, looking away from Nana.

“You’re lying.” She said simply. It wasn’t a question, but an affirmation. She was certain that Seungho could never make Nana happy, not even if he actually made an effort on their relationship.

“Lizzy, I—”

“Save it. If you want to stay with Seungho, it’s okay. I just wish you would be happy, but you’ll never be it if you continue changing yourself to meet everyone’s needs of you. I wish you could just be yourself and do whatever you like. That way you’ll be happy, not trying to please everyone around you. If you were with me, I’d never ever make you change who you are.” Lizzy answered firmly. Even if she just wanted to break down and cry, she managed to stay strong. She lied on her side, facing away from Nana. A couple of tears were already running down the latter’s cheeks, and little did Lizzy know that they wouldn’t stop falling for the rest of the night.

Two days later.

Jungah was playing with her own hands nonchalantly as all After School members sat on the couches of their ample living room. Kaeun kept giving her questioning and slightly worried stares, but Jungah would shrug them off, silently letting her know that she shouldn’t worry. As a leader, she wanted their maknae to feel more comfortable around their manager. After all, he was really nice and never really lectured them for anything. Thankfully, they were all disciplined and behaved, so there had never been the need for that. Jungah was about to go to Kaeun to calm her down when their dorm’s front door was opened. Their manager, dressed casually and smiling softly, waved at them as he went in. Jungah smiled when she saw the rest of the girls sighing in relief; their manager’s visit wasn’t going to be bad after all.

“Hello girls. How are you?” He greeted, bowing at them. The bowed their heads back at him politely, letting them know they were doing fine. “I’ll make this brief since I know you have a schedule today. My visit is concerning Nana.” The young man gestured towards the blonde, who lowered her head slightly. All After School members turned to her in confusion; not even Jungah knew what their manager meant. Lizzy bit her bottom lip tightly, already knowing what was coming.

“Is there something wrong with Nana-unnie, manager oppa?” E-young asked innocently, furrowing her brows. Their manager smiled reassuringly and shook his head.

“Not at all. I think you will all like this surprise. Don’t you think so too, Nana?” The addressed girl only nodded her head somberly, not wanting to look at any of her fellow group members. Jooyeon clapped her hands excitedly and bounced in her seat, earning a slight glare by Uee.

“Ohh I love surprises! Palli, palli! Tell us what is it, manager oppa!” She hurried. Their managed kept his eyes on Nana, smiling proudly.

“Well, I have both bad news and good news for you. The bad news is that Nana will move out of this dorm by the end of this week…” An almost collective gasp escaped all After School members, except for Nana. The latter was still staring down at her lap, not wanting to look any of her fellow group members in the eye. Especially, she didn’t want to look at Lizzy and see more pain in her eyes. “… the good news is that she’ll move to a separate apartment with her boyfriend. Yang Seungho asked me for permission let Nana move in with him and make their relationship public. Under Nana’s request and because I think it’ll bring a good promotion to this group, I’ve accepted.” As their manager finished, almost everyone around Nana began clapping and cheering. Jooyeon hurried to her, almost tackling her into a hug. Nana forced a smile as she weakly hugged back, hearing different congratulations and good wishes from her closest friends. Over Jooyeon’s shoulder, she saw Lizzy, who had also stood up from her seat and looked like she was about to congratulate her too. Their eyes met.

I’m sorry.” Nana mouthed, her eyes welling up with tears as she saw how Lizzy lowered her head and a few tears fell from her eyes before she turned around in her heel and stormed out of the living room. Of course, Lizzy’s crying went unnoticed because everyone’s attention was currently focused on her. She didn’t know how the rest of the girls and their manager were so happy for her when she felt so miserable inside.

Two weeks later.

Lizzy dragged her feet as she reached the door to After School’s dorm. It was late and she was tired from filming all day for the popular sitcom ‘All My Love’ which she was starring along 2am’s Jokwon. She had to admit she had a lot of fun hanging around the guy, but the thought of having to do more kiss scenes with him made her sick to her stomach, and it was pretty obvious that he didn’t necessarily enjoyed them either. Both of them knew they couldn’t back down now that they had accepted their parts, so Lizzy just sighed in resignation, wanting nothing but to lie down and forget about everything for a while.

It had been a week since Nana had left the dorm. Newspapers and gossip websites were plagued with the news of her relationship with Seungho and how perfect they looked together. That and the rest of After School members gushing and spazzing over the news were really driving Lizzy crazy.

Lizzy opened the front door, locking it after letting herself in and heading straight for the kitchen, like usual. Before she could even think about what to make for herself, she stopped dead in her tracks. Nana was standing right there, in front of the sink, with her back towards Lizzy and drinking a glass of water. The latter’s throat felt dry, and she couldn’t help but feel rather confused to see that Nana was wearing casual clothes. Still, Lizzy decided to play it cool.

“So you finally came to pick up the rest of your stuff?” She asked coolly. Nana turned around to face her, slightly startled since she hadn’t noticed Lizzy was there. She sighed to get her heartbeat back to normal, before giving Lizzy what looked like… a smirk?

“I think they can stay there.” She said, shrugging her shoulders nonchalantly and putting her glass away. She also took a few steps towards Lizzy, who was already feeling the familiar butterflies going crazy inside her stomach. No matter how much she tried to forget Nana, she just couldn’t do it.

“It’s taking up my room’s space. I put all the things you left in boxes and I even pushed our beds together, so technically there’s just one… You’re living with your boyfriend, remember? And I read somewhere that he has a pretty luxurious apartment.” Lizzy seethed, crossing her arms. Nana’s smirk accentuated as she walked even closer to Lizzy.

“I brought all my things back today. He is the only one living in his luxurious apartment now as far as I’m concerned.” She answered, her tone of voice playful. Lizzy tilted her head to the side, raising a perfectly sculpted eyebrow.

“Are you joking? Because if you are, it’s not funny…” Lizzy said shakily. Nana giggled ily and walked even closer to her, until the gap between them was almost nonexistent.

“I’m serious, Lizzy. It didn’t take me long to realize that you’re right. Why change when there’s someone who wants me just as I am? Even with my mood swings, my iciness…” Nana’s stare turned from seductive to caressing as she looked deep into Lizzy’s eyes. The latter couldn’t help the smile that made its way into her features. “You were always there, even when Seungho wasn’t. Plus, he’s a player. There’s nothing y about that, is there?” Nana asked before biting her bottom lip. Lizzy smiled even wider as she wrapped her arms around Nana, playing with the ends of her long golden locks.

“No, I don’t think there is.” Lizzy answered simply, before pulling Nana into a full hug. “I love you, Im Jinah. I just can’t keep it in any longer… Thank you so much for coming back to me.” Nana wrapped her own arms around Lizzy’s neck, returning the hug.

“I love you too, Park Sooyoung. Thank you for waiting for me.” Upon hearing those words coming from Nana, Lizzy pulled away slightly so she could crash her lips against Nana’s in a fiery kiss. Nana deepened it by running her tongue along Lizzy’s bottom lip, to which the latter gladly granted entrance. Both of them moaned as their tongues met, and Lizzy took the opportunity to devour Nana’s mouth like she had so many times dreamed about doing. When the lack of oxygen became an issue, they pulled away from each other, lovingly resting their foreheads together.

“Lizzy-ah?” The addressed girl hummed in response. “Did you really push our beds together?” Lizzy giggled softly, nodding her head against Nana’s.

“Yes, I did. Do you have a problem with that?” Lizzy asked playfully, pulling away so she could stare into Nana’s caramel eyes. The latter smiled softly and shook her head.

“Not at all. How about we go and test if they’re really pushed together well?” Nana gave Lizzy a teasing smile before biting her bottom lip. Lizzy’s smile widened as she nodded her head frantically, her mind already divagating into what Nana’s suggestion was implying.

“Race you there!” Both she and Nana took off running to their shared room, not wanting to waste a second of the magical night that awaited them.

This is a wonderful NaLiz story, you had described the situation very well too and the choice of words are fair for readers to understand it in a glimpse, making this fic well written and easy to understand! At least it had ended with a happy ending and I'm very much contented with that fact but I believe even if you had written a sad ending it will still be good if you'll continue to be good writer like how you did here. I enjoyed this story so much! Thank you!
