Chapter One - Regular Life

Sworn to Secrecy

It was a bright morning, the streets slowly starting to wake with activity. Few people walked the streets and the roads were almost clear of traffic, seeing as it was still rather early. Hyun Ae briskly walked down the sidewalk, wearing comfortable attire – grey sweats, a black tank top, and a blue sweater. Her hair was up in a messy bun and she wore a pair of Ray-bands. She always enjoyed a morning stroll to the market because the streets were empty and she was able to properly enjoy a walk without having to cover up who she really was.

Finally reaching a small market, she peered into the empty shop, and then her eyes found a large stack of apples. Grabbing a plastic bag and ripping a few from a roll, she picked a few Royal Galas and tossed them inside the bag. She tied it and shifted over a little bit, and found a whole table of what seemed to be fresh papayas. Carefully examining two at a time, she weighed them in her hands and finally decided on the lighter one, placing it in yet another plastic bag. Pausing for a second, she thought about what else she may be missing.

“Oh, Hyun Ae, back again so soon?” Hyun Ae spun around and found a little middle-aged woman smiling at her.

“Ah, good morning Mrs. Lee, I just felt like making myself a shake this morning, but turns out the Kangs haven’t gone out grocery shopping yet, so we only have a bowl of strawberries. You have a great selection of papaya by the way.” Hyun Ae grinned happily, gesturing to her picks. Mrs. Lee chuckled and pulled her hand out from behind her back, which carried a bag and then handed it to her.

“Here you go child, some ddukkboki to go with that fruit shake.” Grateful, Hyun Ae took the bag and sneakily snuck a few thousand won into Mrs. Lee’s hands.

“For the fruit, thanks so much for this Mrs. Lee, I’ll eat it well!” Bowing curtly, Hyun Ae stepped out from the little space while waving goodbye.

As she began to walk back towards her apartment, she found her way blocked by two flustered looking girls about her age, wearing school uniforms.

“Um h-hello, Miss Hyun Ae!” One girl stuttered while the other cowered behind her friend’s back. Hyun Ae warmly smiled at them.

“Good morning, what can I do for you?” The one who spoke nervously took out a small pad of paper and a pen and held it out to her.

“Can you p-please sign this for us?” She asked in a small voice. The other girl looked at her with hopeful eyes. Hyun Ae briefly looked between the two of them before flashing them yet another smile and nodded.

“What are your names?” She asked while flipping between two pieces of paper.

“I’m Jin Ri, and this is my friend Yuri. We’re really b-big fans of you.” Hyun Ae couldn’t help but to smile widely while signing the two sheets of paper. After adding a little happy face by each of her autographs, she handed the girl back the notepad and pen.

“Well, I’ve got to run, have a good day at school!” Hyun Ae bowed politely to them, and the pair shyly nodded back. As she turned around, Hyun Ae could hear faint squeals as she walked away. The smile on her face seemed to widen as she turned a corner to walk the familiar path to her officetel.

It wasn’t uncommon for people to walk up to her to ask for her autograph, or even a picture. In truth, her face was widely known to the public, but never had she sought the need to cover up whenever she went out. She was probably the only celebrity comfortable enough to stroll around the streets, wearing no disguise whatsoever. In that respect, fans and antis alike somewhat revered her for her boldness, therefore allowing her space, something idols and celebrities remain envious of.

Whistling a familiar tune, Hyun Ae bounded up the stairs to the second floor, where she lived with Mr. Hyo Kang and Mrs. Kyung-soon Kang. They were both lively, middle-aged folk, who were Hyun Ae’s good friends. They had taken her in after Hyun Ae’s parents’ car crash, vowing to care for her as if she were their own. The Kangs had no children, but were – in Hyun Ae’s opinion – one of the greatest guardians she’s ever had, aside from her own parents.

Just as she was about to input the lock code for their apartment, the door swung open, revealing a petite woman with her hand on her hip.

“And where were you this morning, Missy?” Hyun Ae blinked twice, almost surprised that Mrs. Kang had known she was gone. When Hyun Ae had left, both Mr. and Mrs. Kang were sound asleep.

“Aunty – oh, don’t be like that, you know I get irritated when I start to crave my shakes. I just went for a short walk to the grocery stall down the street; don’t be mad, I’ll make you some, eh?” Hyun Ae attempted a bribe but only received a sharp glare from Mrs. Kang. Immediately Hyun Ae stopped and sheepishly rubbed the back of her neck.

“Honestly, just because people don’t mob you like every other celebrity out there, doesn’t mean it can’t happen!” Mrs. Kang said as she hurriedly ushered Hyun Ae inside, closing the door in the process. Hyun Ae couldn’t help but to roll her eyes and let out and exasperated sigh.

“Come on Aunty, you know I can handle myself. Heck, I’ll be damned if I put all my old skills to waste.”

“But this is different Hun – if you start busting out some crazy martial arts move, people will start talking…” Hyun Ae was now bustling around in the kitchen, gathering a few supplies to make her shake while Mrs. Kang trailed along behind her.

“So let them talk, have I ever cared about that stuff, Aunty?” Mrs. Kang looked thoughtfully at Hyun Ae who stared back sceptically. Finally, Mrs. Kang through her hands up in defeat.

“Okay, fine! But Hun, you’re supposed to be done with that stuff anyway, and just in case it does happen – and may God forbid – then The Great Alliance will be down your throat!” Hyun Ae stopped chopping the strawberries and looked sadly at Mrs. Kang.

“Aunty, you of all people know I wouldn’t, I just can’t…” Hyun Ae’s voice trailed off and Mrs. Kang gently patted her shoulder.

“I know Honey-bun, but you know how the Director is. Nonetheless, you’ve always got me and Uncle by your side; we promised your parents that we would never let anything happen to you. And they know you’re a big girl who, pardon my language, can kick !” At Mrs. Kang’s words, Hyun Ae’s chest felt a little lighter and she bent down to kiss Mrs. Kang on the cheek and she resumed her chopping.

“Oh, and you might as well take the shake along with you, the CEO wants you to finish up that script you’ve been working on.” Hyun Ae groaned.

“Aw man, I thought he forgot about that assignment!”

“Well, he said to get there as soon as possible, so get going!”

“Damn reports, dear CEO, you are indeed a great man and thank you for sheltering me for the past three and a half years, but you’ve got to stop treating me like some secretary.” Hyun Ae mumbled to herself. As she walked down the long corridor, her arms over laden with stacks of stock reports, she heard a distant shuffle, as if someone was following her.

She felt something else, and as if on instinct, she dropped all the papers and swiftly spun around, quickly grabbing the person’s wrist and twisting it behind their back.

“Ow, noona – is this really necessary?!” Slightly panting, Hyun Ae looked passed the person she had in a tight lock, and saw five other snickering boys. Quickly, she let go of the person and gathered her papers, straightening up, and then dusting off her shirt.

“I told you that you wouldn’t be able to sneak up on her, Changjo.” The boy with curly brown hair smirked.

“Whatever Niel-hyung, and don’t look at me like that! At least she didn’t trip me and make me fall like Chunji-hyung!” Changjo said indignantly, earning him a light shove from a slightly shorter boy with dark brown hair that stood up on end.

“Hey, in my defence, the floor was a little slippery that day, okay?”

“Right, Chunji, we believe you.” The blonde one rolled his eyes.

“Yeah, L.Joe-hyung’s right, Chunji, we totally believe you. We really believe that you didn’t get pushed over like a stuffed toy, no sir, we know you’re a tough cookie!” Said the cuter boy, while giving Changjo a cheeky smile.

“Okay, that’s enough – where were you headed, Hun?” Hyun Ae couldn’t help but to chuckle a little bit when CAP – the oldest boy – said her nickname.

“Even if I’ve known you all for such a long time, I don’t think I can ever get used to you guys calling me ‘Hun.’ Anyway, I was just going to drop this off the CEO’s office, and then I think I’ll head home.”

“Oh, can we come with you, noona, please?” The cute one – Ricky – clasped his hands together and jumped up and down like an excited little puppy. Hyun Ae resisted the urge to pat his head and say “Good boy!” and instead just smiled and nodded.

“Aunty missed you guys, you haven’t been coming to visit lately!” Hyun Ae said as she started walking, this time with the six boys following.

“Sorry Hyun Ae, but we’ve been busy preparing for our comeback.” Chunji said apologetically, earning him an affectionate nudge from Hyun Ae.

“Nah, don’t be sorry, plus I can’t wait to see your new concept! First you looked so adorable with your school uniforms – “

“Hey!” CAP exclaimed while flexing.

“Like I said, you all looked adorable in those uniforms – and you looked very manly, Min!” CAP scrunched his face when Hyun Ae used her own pet name for him.

“And then you had those crazy hairstyles, not to mention those impossibly hard dance moves – I’m just curious as to what Teen Top will have next, you know?” Hyun Ae said thoughtfully.

“Well, you just have to be patient, Hun. Speaking of which, why can’t you call L.Joe, Chunji, and I oppa, like every other normal girl would?” CAP asked, almost pleadingly.

“Yeah, why not, technically you’re being disrespectful.” L.Joe teased and Hyun Ae rolled her eyes, but didn’t answer. Instead, Chunji took the initiative and chuckled.

“It’s because she’s not normal, and come on, it’s Hyun Ae. Her calling us oppa is just…odd.” Chunji shivered, as if to make a point.

“Thanks for that wonderful explanation Channie, and now that we’ve established that I’m not normal, can we please get out of here?” Hyun Ae said after dropping the pile of reports on top of a desk, outside the CEO’s office.

Leading the way, Hyun Ae went along with the boys back to her apartment. However, they spent a little time inside the building, seeing as they decided to wear masks in order to cover their identities. As always, Hyun Ae remained mask-less, and the seven of them ventured outside.

Teen Top’s individual members had actually been recruited a year after Hyun Ae had started her own activities, in order to create a new boy group. She has known Ricky and Niel the longest, but she was always the closest to Chunji, who came only half a year after she first debuted. The Teen Top boys were one of her very few friends, people to confide in, people whom she could trust.

However, there was one particular secret she has not been able to tell them, and it would explain all those times she had “accidentally” hurt the members physically. As much as she could, Hyun Ae would always try to block out her past, and she had done well for a while, but there were instances such as earlier, where she could not control her instinct. The Director of The Great Alliance – the leader of the largest secret service organization in the whole world – himself had told Hyun Ae that her greatest asset was her ability to trust her instinct.

But ever since her parents’ death, she wanted nothing more to do with The Great Alliance and tried to leave her previous life of secrecy, weapons, and fighting, for a better opportunity for her.

As they walked down the street, the boys were talking animatedly with each other, and Hyun Ae couldn’t help but to gaze at them affectionately. She felt that they never needed to know about her past, and that she was definitely much happier as a comedian under TOP Media. She glanced up towards the sky, and smiled ruefully.

Are you proud of me, Mom and Dad? Dad, I’m sorry I didn’t stay with The Great Alliance, but I did my best. And Mom, I hope you’re happy about what I do now, did I ever tell you that through this, I was able to meet Mr. Won Bin? I can feel you watching me, and I hope that what I’m doing is the right path – No, I know that it is.

Author's Note: Okay! Finally posted the first chapter, and it's pretty long. It's usually hard to start things off, but I hope this is okay. And yes, Teen Top are the first to be introduced, other characters will show up some time later, and I hope this is easy to follow. Anyway, I love comments and feedback, so don't hesitate, I don't bite (:
