It has to be you [VER. A]

“Who would even think of loving a weird like you?” a girl told Kim Jong Woon, he watched sadly as the girl walked away. Kim Jong Woon may look like a normal guy, though in fact he’s really normal but he has a lot of weird characteristics that causes a lot of people feel very scared of him.

“Am I really that weird, Ddangkoma?” he asked looking at one of the three turtles in the glass aquarium in the science lab. He’s always seen there cleaning the fish tank, looking at the insect jars and talking to the turtles. Yes. He speaks to the turtles of the science lab and those three turtles are not just ordinary turtles, they are land turtles meaning, they only survive in land not in water. He even named the three turtles: Ddangkoma, Ddangkomeng and Ddangkoming. “Eomma said I’m normal it’s just that other people don’t understand why I act this way.” He said again.

“Look at him, speaking to those turtles again. I really want to piss him off so he’ll be out this school forever. Huh. Let’s think of a plan…” a guy named Ki Jung told his friend Dong Ji. “Sure.” He said and smiled darkly.

“Gyo Eul, you haven’t taken lunch yet. Come on let’s grab some snacks.” Dong Hae told Gyo Eul. Cho Gyo Eul, she is every guy’s dream girlfriend but she has this anti-social personality and only speaks to her bestfriend Lee Dong Hae the campus heartthrob who’s accused that he’s gay. “Another letter in my locker yesterday again asking if I was really a gay. Sheesh. Those people are making me sick.” He told her. She didn’t even paid attention. “Ignore everyone.” She said. “Are you finished there? Gyo Eul, let’s eat!” he said. She closed her book and got her wallet as they head to the cafeteria. “Why is that guy always being bullied by everyone? Who is he?” Gyo Eul asked looking at Jong Woon who was dripping with mustard sauce on his shirt. “Aigoo… they picked on him again. I pity him. He’s Kim Jong Woon of class C, everyone says he’s weird but he looks normal to me.” Dong Hae said. “Yeah. And you’ll tell me that I’m weird.” Gyo Eul said eating her sandwich. “But you really are! Because you don’t speak to anyone other than me and the teachers and your family. What’s the use of your voice if you won’t speak up?” he asked her. She frowned and continued looking at Jong Woon who was about to go out the cafeteria but a guy intentionally placed his right foot on the way so he could slip and fall and it happened. Everyone roared in laughter. “YAH, WHY ARE YOU PICKING ON HIM?! WANT ME TO DESTROY YOUR FACES?!” Dong Hae shouted. The laughter died everyone looked at him. “Well, well… if it isn’t the Gay Heartthrob of the University…” it was Ki Jung and he was smirking. “Yah… Dong Hae… stop!” Gyo Eul was whispering. He cracked his fists. “You made fun of Jong Woon and called me a Gay? Tch. You must be a chicken! You like to pick on someone who can’t fight back!” Dong Hae shouted. “Mworago?!” Ki Jung asked and stood up. “Oh? Now you’re deaf? I said you’re a chicken. Can’t understand simple Korean?” Dong Hae asked and laughed. “We’re dead.” Gyo Eul whispered to herself. “What’s all this commotion about?!” it was Principal Lee. “Ah! Mr. Lee! Just the man I wanted to see! Well, I have a problem with Ki Jung. You see, Jong Woon was quietly walking out the cafeteria when he placed his foot on Jong Woon’s way so he would slip and fall and be a laughing stock of these narrow minded people.” He told Mr. Lee. “KI JUNG! You’re picking on Jong Woon again?! You mindless person! One more of this and you’ll be expelled! You understand?!” Mr. Lee said and Ki Jung nodded. Dong Hae helped Jong Woon and smirked at Ki Jung who was scolded by Mr. Lee.

“Lock the Science Lab if you’re the only one inside. I’m sure Ki Jung’s gangs are up to something. And don’t hesitate to call my name if ever you’re in trouble. Arasseo?” Dong Hae told Jong Woon. “T-thank you so much…” Jong Woon said. “That was nothing. See you around.” He said and smiled.

“Ddangkoma, I was bullied again… why are people so bad? I’m not doing anything to them… I’m not bad…” Jong Woon said as tears began falling from his eyes. Gyo Eul saw him from outside the lab. She felt sad for Jong Woon and she wanted to come in the lab and comfort him but that would really be weird for her since they don’t know each other. She just looked from the door as he cried alone in the empty room…

“I love snakes. They’re my new pets now! And turtles!” Gyo Eul told Dong Hae happily. “Eww… you’re really weird!” he said and laughed. “Aren’t they beautiful? I asked Dad to buy me a Brazilian Boa Constrictor and an Albino one. I even have the same land turtle in the Science Lab.” She said as she looked at the snakes in the container one by one. “I also want tarantulas.” She said. “Gyo Eul, you’re really not normal.” Dong Hae told her. “Wae? Because I have exotic pets? The way you act shouldn’t be a basis in how people judge you. Now I know why you defend Jong Woon so much.” Gyo Eul told him. She still remembers how Jong Woon looks yesterday. “Hey, since it’s a Saturday, let’s eat at our favorite Babtols!” Dong Hae invited her.

“Hello, Welcome to Babtols!” it was Jong Woon who greeted them. “Omo? Dong Hae-ssi? And your girlfriend. Annyeonghaseyo!” he said and bowed behind the counter. “You work here?” Dong Hae asked him. “Uh… Yes… well… no… actually this is ours. I’m just helping my parents…” he said. “Wow! This place is yours?! Great!” Dong Hae said. “And since you saved me yesterday, feel free to order whatever you like. I’ll give it for free.” He said and smiled. Gyo Eul looked at him. “Why is my heart starting to beat fast? What’s wrong?” she asked herself. “Mwo? What do you like, Gyo Eul? Oh, by the way, this is Gyo Eul, Jong Woon. She’s my bestfriend.” Dong hae said and smiled. “Omo? Bestfriend? I thought she was your girlfriend.” Jong Woon asked. “Anyway, nice to meet you, Gyo Eul-ssi!” Jong Woon said and smiled again. “Uh… sure. Thanks. Nice to meet you too.” She said and smiled. “Okay, we’ll have two bibimbap, galbi, bulgogi and tuna kimbap.” Dong Hae said. “Yah, that’s too much!” Gyo Eul told him. “But Jong Woon said…” “Yes, it’s free. Please wait as I make your order. Thank you!” he said and smiled.

“I want to thank you personally for always saving Jong Woon. He wasn’t really like that when he was young but then, as time went on, we discovered that he has Inferiority Complex that’s why he acts like that. His friends apparently left him. He speaks to animals and to the flowers. I know how much he’s suffering right now but he keeps a smiling face so I wouldn’t get worried. Jong Woon’s a very extraordinary son and we love him very much…” Jong Woon’s mom told Gyo Eul and Dong Hae with tears falling down her eyes. “I know he’s always bullied, rejected at school but he’s a brave boy not fighting back to them…” his mom continued. “Yes, Ahjumma, he’s even braver than me.” Dong Hae said and Gyo Eul looked at him. “Eomma-nim, Appa’s calling you.” Jong Woon said as he approaches them. His mom wiped her face and stood up. “I hope you’ll enjoy your meal. Order more if you like.” She said and smiled. “Thank you, Ahjumma-nim!” Dong Hae said and smiled back. “How’s the taste?” Jong Woon asked. “Haven’t you tasted it yet?” Gyo Eul asked. “Nope. I haven’t tasted it yet.” He answered. “You don’t eat at school?” she asked again. “No, because whenever I go to the cafeteria I’d get bullied.” He said and laughed. “Jong Woon, you need to learn how to defend yourself.” Gyo Eul said. “I know but I don’t fight with others.” He said. “I’ll just go and do something in the kitchen.” He said and left.

“I never thought you’d hang out with that zero, Gyo Eul. I thought you had sense.” Yoona told her. She kept silent. “You’re always like that. Ignorant .” She said and walked away. Gyo Eul kept her cool. “I’d like to see my snakes kill and eat you. That’d be fun.” She told herself and smirked.

“Ddangkoma, Ddangkomeng, Ddangkoming! I want you to hear me sing! I composed this song and I want you to hear if it’s beautiful or not. Arraseo?” Jong Woon asked. As usual, no answer. And he began to close his eyes and sing using the keyboard he borrowed from the music room…

“♫Oneuldo nae gieokul ddarahemaeda. Igil ggeuteso seo seongineun na. Dasin bol sudo eobnneun niga nareul butjaba. Naneun ddo i gileul mudneunda. Neol bogo shipdago. Ddo ango shipdago Jeohaneul bomyeo gido haneun mal…♫” Gyo Eul heard him because the door wasn’t fully closed. Her heart was beating fast. She was looking at Jong Woon and as if he was singing the song for her…

“♫Niga animyeon andwae. Neo eobsi nan andwae. Na ireoke haruhandareul ddoilnyeoneul. Na apado joha. Nae mam dachyeodo joha nan. Geure nan neo hanaman saranghanikka… Nado beon dasineun. Bonael su eobdago. Na neorul itgo salsun eobdago…♫”

“He’s slowly capturing my heart… he stops my world… I’ve never felt like this before…” Gyo Eul said in her mind.

“♫Niga animyeon andwae. Neo eobsi nan andwae. Na ireoke haruhandareul ddoilnyeoneul. Na apado joha. Nae mam dachyeodo joha nan. Geure nan neo hanaman saranghanikka… Nae meong deun gaseumi. Naega saranghal saram nan. Geure nan no hanamyeon chungbunhanikka…oohh… Neo hanaman sarang… hanikka… ooohhh…♫” he sang and opened his eyes. “I felt happy, Ddangkoming! What could the title of the song be?... hmmm…” he said and stood up. He looked outside and saw no one. He closed the door and locked it. “It has to be you…” Gyo Eul whispered behind the door of the Stock Room.

“What’s happening?!” Gyo Eul asked Dong Hae who was looking worried and panicking. “It’s Jong Woon! Ki Jung stole the turtles in the Science Lab and threatens them him to throw them in a pail full of water! Those turtles won’t die right?” Dong Hae asked and stopped. “Are you out of your mind?! Those turtles aren’t meant for the water! That’s why they’re called land turtles!” she shouted and ran.

“Now, say goodbye to your precious lame turtles! Hahahaha! Ki Jung said holding out the smallest, Ddangkoming above the pail of water. “STOP! DON’T DROP HIM!” Jong Woon shouted. He was full of dirt and no one can’t see his eyes. “Huh, and what are you gonna do? Call Dong Hae? One… Two…” “I SAID LEAVE THEM!” and with a blink of an eye, Ki Jung’s mouth was bleeding and he was vomiting blood. Jong Woon looked at him and there was anger in his eyes. “You’ll loose your life if you pick on me again. That’s a threat.” He said and picked the turtles up.

He even picked the pail of water and threw it at Ki Jung and the students who were watching. “Think it’s funny eh?” he said and left. Gyo Eul and Dong Hae saw everything and they were shocked.

“I knew it! He knows how to fight! He’s just scared to hurt anyone!” Dong Hae said. “But Ki Jung went far! Oohh~ I wish I was the one who threw the water at him! He needs to be drowned!” Gyo Eul said looking irritated. “Someone’s talkative.” Dong Hae said and smiled. “Shut up.” Gyo Eul told him. “Gyo Eul, are you in love?” Dong Hae began to ask. She stopped walking. “Wae?” she asked. “Actually, I really wanted to tell you that I really like you even before.” He said. She fell silent. “But if you like someone else, it’s fine. I mean… who am I right?” he continued. “Dong Hae… you… you’re a very special friend of mine. You’re my bestfriend. And I really appreciate everything you did for me. But… I’m sorry… I have someone in my heart right now…” she said and looked at the way to the Science Lab. “I understand… go to him, Gyo Eul. And well, I’ll be waiting for you in the cafeteria! I’m hungry!” he said and laughed. “Michyeo!” Gyo Eul shouted and ran to the Science Lab.

“I’m sorry for not locking the lab. You were inches from death!” Jong Woon said to his turtles. “Anyway, I won’t get careless anymore. Okay?” he continued. “Err… Ehem?” it was Gyo Eul. “Oh? Gyo Eul-ssi?” he asked. She went inside. “Today, I’ll be brave enough to go inside while you’re here.” She said. “Eh? What do you mean?” he asked. “I was always passing by ever since I met you. I’ve seen you cry and sing here and you were alone. I wanted to go in and comfort you all those times but I can’t I don’t have any courage. I was afraid that if someone sees us, they’ll say that I’m weird too. But today, you’ve proven to everyone that you’re not weird but you’re extraordinary, Jong Woon.” She said. “T-thank you, Gyo Eul-ssi.” He said and blushed. “I also have the same turtles at home but they’re all the same size and color so I can’t tell which one is who. Hahaha!” she said and laughed. “Wait. You heard me sing?” he asked. “Uhh… nae.” She said and blushed. “Aww… you heard my song for you.” He said and groaned. “F-f-for m-me?!” she pointed at herself. “Hmmm… because I felt different in your eyes. I felt normal because of you.” He said. “Then, what’s the title of that song?” she asked. “Hm? Animyeon Andwae.” He said and laughed. “Jong Woon! Why not….” “It has to be you.” He said and she was surprised. “Mwo?” she asked him. “The title of that song is It has to be you.” He said. “I… how…?” she asked wondering. “Wae?” he asked. “It’s nothing.” She said. “Thank you.” He told her. “Hm?” she asked. “Thank you for loving a weird person like me. I never thought that anyone would love somebody weird like me.” He said. “You’re not weird. You’re unique.” She said and smiled. “Close your eyes.” He said. “What? Wae?” she asked. “I’m going to change my shirt.” He said. “W-well… okay…” she said and closed her eyes but she felt soft lips touch her forehead…

Jong Woon kissed her forehead. “Saranghae, Gyo Eul…” he whispered to her ear. “Wait. I need to settle my score with someone.” She said and ran away. In the cafeteria, everyone was shocked when Gyo Eul threw hot soup on Yoona’s clothes. “That’s for calling me an ignorant .” She said and smirked. Everyone clapped their hands. Gyo Eul smiled and winked at Dong Hae who was laughing hard.

“You two are really meant to be together. Stay way from me! I hate bugs!” Dong Hae shouted at Gyo Eul and Jong Woon who were holding Rhino Beatles. “They don’t bite, Dong Hae, come on!” Gyo Eul called. “No! Never!” he shouted. Jong Woon has never been happy like this for all his life. And at the end of the day, he looks at the picture of the two people who changed his life that moment. As for Gyo Eul, she became very approachable now. Well it seems that, it wasn’t just Gyo Eul who affected Jong Woon’s life; it was also Jong Woon who affected Gyo Eul’s life. The sun shines brightly, the turtles smile. ^^

“Yah, it has to be you just translated animyeon andwae. Wae?”

“Don’t ask. I like it that way.”

“Fine. Koma, Komeng, Koming, what d’you think?”

“Kim Jong Woon…”

“Arasseo… (^^)v”
