Foreword

How many people don't get the one they want, but end up with the one they're supposed to be with?

"This isn't fair, Min" Donghae said in between sniffs, "she's way too young for that."

They've been at the hospital for two hours.

Two hours, and Donghae still can't keep himself together. Sungmin's not that much better, but at least he isn't bawling his eyes out and is still able to make reasonable decisions.

"I know, Hae, I really do. But please, we have to consider some things right now. You've heard what the doctor said, we can't just stand here and cry, dear." he said, embracing the younger's frame cautiously.

"I know!" he suddenly yelled, startling the blonde and making the sleeping child he was holding tight stir in her sleep. He lowered his voice in order to avoid waking her up and switched his weight from one leg to another. "I know what he said, Min. I know we don't have much time. But what do you want me to do? Euijin is dead, Min! We've known her for years, and now she's gone! And Sanji's not in a better position either, but I can barely even think about making decisions right now. I can't affect Nami's life like this."

"Donghae, I understand where you're standing at and I'm as worried about Nami as you are, trust me, but we have to think about this seriously. Mostly, you have to."

Donghae was about to open his mouth to retort, saying no, you don't understand the responsibility I'm holding, but the doctor's entrance cut their conversation short.

"I'm sorry to interrupt," he hesitantly started, earning a nod from the wide-eyed and worried men. "but the patient's condition is only getting worse. I know this is delicate, but I'm afraid we really need to discuss the guardian issue. Were both of you the ones indicated by the child's parents?"

"Umm, no. I wasn't asked, he was." Sungmin gestured towards Donghae, who was still trying to maintain a composed face.

"Is there any way you could talk to the other guardian then? If there's another one, actually."

Donghae took a deep breath and nodded, turning to Sungmin as the doctor checked his beeping pager and ran back towards Sanji's room.

"I guess I have to solve this." he breathed again, looking sadly to Nami's half awake form in his arms. He kissed her forehead sweetly before handing her to Sungmin, who quickly adjusted his arms in a nest shape, carefully soothing her back to sleep. "I'll call him to let him know about the situation and maybe if he wants to come here we'll see what we'll do about it, then."

"Who's the other guardian, though? Is it that Sanji's friend from Busan or something?"

"Yes. Lee Hyukjae."

Donghae tapped Sungmin's shoulder lightly and headed outside, looking for a quiet place and trying hard to ignore the Cardio team passing rapidly next to him, running to Sanji's room.

Reaching an empty bench, he took his cellphone out and dialed.
