CHAPTER 9


The next morning came and I 

woke up early to prepare my things for the contest.

I was feeling so happy because finally I have admitted 

to myself that I have fallen with my best friend 

and fiancé. I took a bath and fixed myself. I 

fixed my things that I’ll be using for the contest.

I left my room after fixing them and went to

the dining table. I saw Ann and gave her a hug.

“What’s that for?” she asked. “I just had a good sleep.”

I said as I sat on my seat. “You excited for the contest?”

she asked. “Nope.” I said as I took a bite with my bacon.

“Why? You should be.” She said. “I hate performing.” 

I said. “Why? I guess you should love it now.”

She said. “I don’t think so.” I said. “Well, you should win.”

She said. “And why?” I asked. “Because I’ll be so proud of you if you do.”

She said. I stopped eating for awhile and thought of

what she said. “I should do my best to make her happy.” 

I thought to myself. “So you’re having your practice

this morning and this afternoon’s the contest right?”

she asked. “Yup.” I said. “I think you should be

going now. Remember, you should win this.” She said. 

“I’ll try.” I said as I stood up. “Gotta go. Bye!” I said.

When I arrived in school, the other contestants 

were already practicing. I saw Devon

in the corner practicing her saxophone. "James!” she called. 

I went closer to her. I placed my things down and sat 

in front of the piano. I played “Statue” by Lil Eddie. 

Devon sat beside me after a few moments. 

“I fell in love with you because of this.” She said. 

I stopped playing the piano and was about to stand 

up until the organizer called every one of us. 

“Okay guys, we will practice how you move in the stage.”

She said. After awhile, we walked on stage and

made our pose. After the practice was done, the

choreographer went to us. “You know what, the 

two of you looked good together.” She said. 

“Thank you ma’am.” Devon said. 

“If you two have time, please call this number.

We are getting some models for a clothing line.” 

She said as she handed the calling card. Devon

took them and thanked the choreographer. 

I didn’t bother to look at the calling card but

instead, I just walked out and headed to the parking lot.

I went in my car and drove home. When I reached home, 

I saw my parent’s car. When I went

in the house, I saw both of them with Ann.

“Son!” my dad called. I went to them and hugged 

them both. After the hug, we headed to 

the dining room to have our lunch together. 

“We are so proud of you my son.” My dad said.

“Thanks dad.” I said. After our lunch, we decided

to go to the auditorium earlier to have a good

seat. We were in separate cars. I was driving my car 

with Ann and dad is driving his car with mom. 

When we arrived in the auditorium, there were already

students who were sitting comfortably.

“I have to go to the backstage.” I said to them.

“Okay son, good luck. Your sister and your brother will 

come later on. They’ll support you as well.” My mom said. 

“Okay, I have to go mom.” I said as I kissed her cheeks. 

“I’ll win for you.” I said to Ann and gave her a kiss. 

I could see that she was shocked because of what I did.

I went to the backstage and saw the other contestants 

fixing themselves. Later on, Devon came in. 

we fixed ourselves and an hour later, the 

pageant started. Me and Devon

walked gracefully which made the crowed go wild.

Our friends were there as well to support us. 

After walking, we went back to the backstage 

and prepared for the talent portion. When it

was already our turn, I looked around the crowd.

I saw my parents, my siblings, my friends and also my fiancé.

“I have to do this.” I said. I started hitting the keys and 

so as Devon blowing the saxophone. 

We played the song “Right here waiting for you”

as we played it; the crowd went wild that our instrument

can’t be heard anymore. After we finished the song, 

the crowd gave us a standing ovation. We went backstage

after our performance and waited for the announcing 

of winners. After a few moments, the organizer signaled 

us to go out. The hosts started announcing the runner

ups. Finally, they were already be announcing the winners.

“And the winner for this year’s mr. and ms. highschool

is no other than…..Devon Seron and James Reidl!!!!!!!” 

the host announced which made everyone yell. 

The former Mr. and Ms. high came in bringing the

sashes and the certificates and so as the crown.

Photographers started taking pictures of us.

My family came in the stage to congratulate me. Suddenly, Devon

grabbed me and kissed me. I was shocked of what she did. 

She did in on public. I looked at Ann’s reaction and

I could see her teary eyed already. I went to my 

family not minding Devon. They all congratulated me including Ann.

After the contest, we headed to a restaurant to celebrate.

We had our dinner together. I noticed that Ann

was just quiet the whole time. “You okay?” I asked.

“Yup. I’m just so happy for you.” She said as she smiled. 

After the dinner we had, we went home. Ann

was so quiet the whole time. “You’re not okay, are you?” I asked. 

“I’m just tired.” She said though I know she was lying. 

When we reached home, she headed right away to her room.

I couldn’t stop thinking of what she is going through right now. 

I wanted to talk to her but I think she needed some space.
